Why did my hydrangea not flower? Usually, it is because of poor pruning by humans or by Mother Nature. I have learned it is best to ask for more information before I give a complete answer. “Did you receive this hydrangea as a gift for Easter or Mother’s Day? Did it have pretty plastic or foil paper around the pot?” If so, the plant may be a florist hydrangea, and it is simply not hardy enough for our area. Mother Nature freezes the flower buds each year destroying the future flower.
Real Estate ____________________24 Sip & Dine ____________________29 Vibes & Rants ____________________16
Usually, these plants are big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Most varieties bloom on old wood, i.e., wood that grew and produced flower buds during the previous year. Therefore, early, or late freezes or bitter winters may damage the flower buds. The other reason is pruning at the wrong time. If you cut back a hydrangea between the fall and early spring, you have trimmed off the future flower because it blooms on old wood. For further information, go to http://ccelivingstoncounty.org/

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

585-739-1707 FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.

Sodium: Otherwise known as salt, sodium is necessary to maintain nerve and muscle health. However, many people consume too much sodium, oftentimes because of processed foods. WebMD notes that sodium intake should be limited to 2,300 milligrams or less per day. Certain people, such as those over the age of 51, African Americans or those with certain conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes, should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

Local Eagle Scout to Build Lima Community Garden BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
W
e often hear that today’s youth are too distracted by rapidly advancing technology and a plethora of electronic devices to notice the world around them. While this may be true of some, Eagle Scout John Ryan Samarra is an inspiring example of a young person who not only cares about those in need but who actively seeks to make a difference in his community, as well. Moved by those experiencing food insecurity as well as his desire to bring neighbors together, John Ryan has chosen to establish Lima Community Garden as his Eagle Scout project. A member of Troop 105 in Mendon, John Ryan found inspiration for his project where so many great ideas start: in the kitchen talking with his mom. The pair were casually discussing the possibility of a local grocery store which would sell local products, and the conversation led to the concept of a community garden. For John Ryan, it was a lightbulb moment. “I realized I could do that as my Eagle Scout project because it was something I was really excited about,” he recalled. Deciding to design the project for his hometown, John Ryan began discussing his plans with community members and members of the Lima Village Board and the Lima Parks Commission. “They all seemed on board with it, and some of them have even expressed interest in having a plot of their own or helping out,” he said, thankful to be able to serve his hometown. “I grew up here for most of my life,” John Ryan shared. “I know a great number of people in Lima, and we are good friends. Part of the reason this project matters so much to me is that over the last couple of years, I have seen so much division. I want the community garden to be a positive influence that brings people together.”
John Ryan explained that his Eagle Scout project is just the beginning, laying the groundJohn Ryan Samarra visits the work for what he hopes will be an Pittsford Community Garden as ongoing community endeavor. he plans his garden project! “My Eagle Scout project has to be completed by my 18th birthday in December, so the goal is to build the garden’s infrastructure as well as a pest-preventing fence around it,” he said. “We are planning 24, 10 x 5 foot garden plots with a border around each and mulched paths in between to be located at Mark Tubbs Memorial Park in Lima.” After these pieces are finished, John Ryan’s project will be complete, but he has a greater vision for this garden. “I hope to get a bunch of Eagle Scouts together to plant on some of the plots and to perhaps even start a Lima Community Garden Club. I would like it to continue even if I move away.”

(Right) This pleasant stretch of land in Matt Tubbs Memorial Park is the garden’s future home!
How can area neighbors participate in this exciting, new garden? It is as easy as the click of a mouse! “Members of the community who would like to reserve a plot should email us at limacommunitygarden@gmail.com,” said John Ryan. “They will be able to claim their plot where they can grow whatever they like, and they will be responsible for its upkeep. We do ask that each grower donate a certain amount of the produce they grow to a local food bank, and we will likely have restrictions on pesticide use.” Who can reserve a plot? The possibilities are nearly endless! “A plot can belong to almost anyone: a person, a family, a garden club, a local restaurant, a 2nd grade class…the important thing is that it will be grown by people in the community for people in the community. Not only will we be helping neighbors in need with delicious local produce, but by reducing the need for shipped produce, we will be more environmentally friendly, too.”
With this unity, John Ryan believes the community can make a huge impact on local hunger. “The Lima Community Garden would donate a decent amount of food to charity through local food banks,” he explained. “It would bring people together to feed our community and support those fighting food insecurity.”

(Top) Created by John Ryan Samarra’s father, Ken Samarra, this detailed 3D rendering gives a glimpse into the exciting possibilities in store for the Lima Community Garden!
John Ryan is currently using a GoFundMe to raise funds for necessary project materials. “Our goal is based on my estimated costs if the community garden does not receive any donated tools and materials,” he said. “Our Facebook post has only been up for a few days (Facebook.com/LimaGarden), and people are already expressing interest and asking questions. I am excited for how this garden will bring our community together!”

THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS WHO ASSISTED THEIR CHILDREN WITH THIS LIFE SAVING DRILL LAST YEAR! BUT WE STILL NEED THOSE WHO HAVE NOT PRACTICED WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO PLEASE DO SO THIS YEAR!! WILL YOUR KIDS KNOW WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A FIRE IN THEIR HOME DURING SLEEPING HOURS? NOT IF THEY DON’T PRACTICE E.D.I.T.H. stands for "Exit Drills In The Home" Every October the Livonia Fire Department sponsors a HOME FIRE DRILL. This year's drill will be on October 6th, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. We are once again asking all residents of the Livonia Central School District and all local Fire Districts to please participate in this LIFE SAVING DRILL. All area fire sirens will blow at 6:00 p.m. on this date to signal the start of the drill. Livonia's Past Chief Dave Peck states "Every year we hear about families which are seriously injured or killed in a fire because they didn't have an escape plan which they practiced. Don't let this be you! There are still too many residents who think it can't happen to them. WELL IT CAN!!! You should be prepared by practicing how to get your family out of your home if a fire should occur. If you care about your family you will: 1. Have at least one working smoke detector on each level of your home. Use it as your signal to begin your drill. 2. Test emergency exits. Make sure you and your children can open windows and remove screens and storm windows from inside. 3. Have folding ladders available for second floor escape. 4. Practice using emergency exits in the dark. Keep a flashlight next to every bed. 5. Teach each family member to roll out of bed, crawl to the bedroom door, feel the door to see if it is hot, stay low in smoke to avoid toxic gases. Crawl quickly to your safest exit. 6. Don't forget to designate a meeting place for your whole family once outside the residence. Make sure everyone knows to get out quickly and go to the meeting place. 7. Never go back inside a smoke filled building for any reason! Once you are out, STAY OUT. 8. In a real emergency, go to your neighbor's house and call 911.
Please assist your children with Operation E.D.I.T.H

Going out of his way A thank you to the driver who went out of his way at a hotel I was staying at. When asked if he could drive me to a certain destination, he said he was sorry, and that it was beyond where they were allowed to go with their company van. However, after looking around and determining he wasn’t busy, he said to me, “Let’s go!” We hear all the time about people going the extra mile for their customers. Thanks for doing so!

Kindness matters! I have worked about 27 years in this town where my husband grew up. How happy we all were when my daughter, her husband and their 6-year-old daughter bought a home here! My granddaughter was homeschooled last year and hasn’t played with other kids in a long time. She is very bright, happy, friendly, energetic, kind, and eager without a mean bone in her body. This last weekend, I took her to the park. A little girl and her brother came to play. My granddaughter asked to play with them. They ran away, ignoring her each time she followed. Thinking they did not like her, she cried, heartbroken. So, we went to a neighboring playground, but there, another little girl and her brother kept running away. My granddaughter said, “Little girl, little girl…can I talk to you please? I haven’t had any little kids to play with in a long, long time and I want to know if……” The little girl ran away. “Little girl, can I please talk to you?” No response. I hugged my granddaughter as she started crying, and that little girl laughed at us. The welcome my granddaughter got here makes me cry. She starts school for the first time next week and is so excited to “meet some friends.” I pray she gets a classroom with warm, receptive, friendly children who will befriend this wonderful little girl with a big heart.
Social Security Cap Each week, I see comments regarding Social Security. How many of you realize there is a wage-base cap? According to IRS Topic 751 for earnings in 2021, this base is $142,800. Which means that any earnings over this amount are not subject to Social Security withholdings. If your neighbor earns $250,000, only the first $142,800 is subject to Social Security withholdings. That also means that Jeff Bezos pays on only the first $142,800. Also, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Mark Zuckerberg, and the list goes on, only pay on the first $142,800 of income. The powers that be making the decision on the wage-base cap, I am sure, make considerably more than this cap. I’m certain there is nothing we little people can do to change this unfair practice, but it seems a significant raise in this cap could go a long way to making Social Security self-sustaining for years and years into the future. Hero or villain? It is amazing to watch the people who, just a year ago, praised healthcare workers as heroes be the same who are now condemning them as villains for not wanting the COVID vaccine. There were so many signs that praised them. Now, they are the enemy?

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do people leave their pets behind when a hurricane or forest fire approaches? And what happens to the pets that survive a disaster? -- Kerry in Cincinnati DEAR KERRY: Pet owners don’t intend to abandon pets to approaching danger, but it happens all too frequently: Pets get left behind when a disaster strikes. Sometimes an owner has to leave the pet behind -- rescue services prioritize human life over pets when a situation is dire. Sometimes, in the panic and confusion of gathering up things to evacuate, a pet will dart out the door. And sometimes, pets get abandoned because evacuation centers won’t allow pets inside. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when more than 100,000 pets were left to fend for themselves during and after the storm (www. louisianaspca.org/about-us/hurricane-katrina/animal-rescue-facts/), pet shelters radically changed the way they manage intake and care of animals. They became more proactive. They built bigger, stronger networks with other shelters locally and nationwide, and coordinated their efforts with emergency responders. (www.sierraclub. org/sierra/what-happens-animals-during-natural-disasters). They got better at reuniting rescued pets with owners. Pet owners can play a direct role in helping pet rescue efforts by being proactive well before a disaster strikes. Microchip your pets and keep contact info up to date. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and health checks. Most importantly, have your own evacuation plan that includes a “go” bag for you and for your pet. A pet’s “go” bag should include an extra leash and collar, a copy of their medical and registration records, pet food, waste pickup bags or pee pads, and extra medication if they take any. Know where to evacuate and which shelters allow pets. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH ANIMAL TRAINERS Trainers can recognize environmental factors affecting pets that owners may not see. Pet owners may think their homes are pet-friendly or conducive to housebreaking pets. But trainers may see things the untrained eye won’t. Anything from the location of a parrot’s cage to the designated litter box area for a cat can affect pets’ behavior, compromising pets owners’ efforts to housebreak their animals. Trainers can recognize potential problems that may have relatively simple solutions.

“We give advice by the bushel but take it by the grain.≥”
~ William Alger Nobody gives advice so earnestly or so sincerely as parents. Parents, from their position as adults who have gone through adolescence, know what is best for their children and try to help with excellent advice. Children, being immature and lacking good judgment, disregard that good advice. And all through life we tend to follow the same pattern… offering advice with the best of motives while accepting it reluctantly, if at all. We might all be better off if we could learn to accept good advice more willingly. Our reputation for excellence is based on the fact that we truly care about the families we serve. Let us tell you what you should know about funerals, before the need arises - no obligation.

Lorne Ainsworth August 18, 2021
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Lorne and his family came to Rochester in 1947. They moved to Mendon where he graduated in 1957 from Honeoye Falls, and eventually began working alongside his father on Davenport Machines. He took over the family business and celebrated over 54 years of success as Ainsworth Automatics. In 1978, he bought “The Farm” which immediately became a welcoming place for guests. Throughout the years The Farm raised corn, beans, wheat, and sunflowers, as place where he and Linda hosted countless parties for their family and friends, provided camaraderie each hunting season, and it is where he started Ainsworth Excavating. The Farm will greatly miss him. Regarded with deep affection by all those he encountered, Lorne was strong in his faith, devoted to his community, and had a legendary wit. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend to many. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in his honor to House of Mercy, 285 Ormond St., Rochester, NY 14605 or Salvation Army, 70 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester, NY 14604 and/or performing a random act of kindness. Calling hours took place on Monday, August 23, 2021 from 4-8pm at Merton H Kays Funeral Home, Inc., 59 Monroe Street, Honeoye Falls. Funeral service was held at New Horizons Church, 2219 Bronson Hill Rd., Avon, NY on Tuesday, August 24 at 11:00am. Interment will be private.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. INFLAMMATION
By Fifi Rodriguez 1. GEOGRAPHY: What is the second largest island in the Hawaiian Islands? 2. Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. -- J.C. ANSWER: Fatigue, which is the sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot
Seasoned Firewood
(NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used.
Log loads available. Also buying standing timber.
A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well.
585-721-3770 We deliver • Can provide large quantities APPLE PICKING: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous w ith fall than apple picking. M any apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their ow n apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax w ith a cup of w arm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.
On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. Also, look for return addresses or company contact information on packages.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Holiday Gift Shortages If you will have holiday shopping to do this year, you need to get started on it now. Manufacturers and store owners are saying there will be shortages. There are labor problems, problems with container ships that can’t be offloaded in ports, trucks that can’t deliver the goods, material supply-chain problems ... you get the picture. Here are two suggestions to keep gift-buying simpler this year: toys and books. TOYS -- If you have small children to buy for, shop now. Manufacturers of many of the most popular toys are saying that they’ve seen shortages of required materials on a global scale. Try local toy stores for items they have in stock now. BOOKS -- Call your library and ask for age-appropriate suggestions for young children. Then, list in hand, call your local bookstore. Ask if they have in stock what you need. If you can actually go to the store and pick up the books curbside, you’re ahead of the game. Otherwise try ordering online, but look for things already in stock. For teens and adults, consider buying them a Kindle, an e-book reader available on Amazon. (I’ve had three different versions of Kindle since 2016 and truly appreciate the way I can order a book and have it appear on my e-reader within minutes.) A new Kindle, a $15 case and a $50 gift certificate for e-books would be welcome gifts for readers. Check the delivery dates of the various Kindle colors. Some are available immediately; others aren’t. When it comes to online shopping, experts advise ordering items that are as close to home as possible, not across oceans. Beware of local shipping delays as well. Gone are the days of always receiving boxes in just a few days. If you order something online, track it, and follow up with a phone call if necessary. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep the yolks in hard-boiled eggs from crumbling by wetting your knife between slices. * “Save plastic bags that cannot be recycled, and use them to collect food scraps that cannot be composted or flushed.” -- B.M. in New York * “I use double-stick tape to hang lighter items on my walls, since it does not leave a hole, and I am a renter. You also can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. For instance, I used it in my car to keep the carpet lying flat in the trunk.” -- J.T. via e-mail

* “To soften butter without melting it, warm a bowl that is bigger than the butter stick and invert it over the butter on a plate. It’s nice before a meal because it makes a hard stick of butter easier to spread on bread rolls, but not so soft that you use too much.” -- T.G. in Indiana * “That time of the year is almost here. You know, the time when running the heater gives the whole house the zaps. To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with 1 part laundry softener and 4 parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps.” -- A.O. in Canada * “Hard-water stains in the toilet are no match for denture tablets. Simply drop one in the toilet and let sit overnight. A quick scrub and a flush in the morning should do it.” -- P.S. in Washington
