SEPARATED BY CRISIS, REUNITED BY VOLUNTEERS (NAPSI)—Each year, armed conflicts and natural disasters wreak havoc on a global scale. Yet even after the immediate crisis passes, the devastation can last much longer— particularly when families are torn apart amidst circumstance and chaos. In these cases, family members are often left with few resources and no sense of where to begin their quest to find their missing loved ones. Fortunately, there is a worldwide organization that works to reconnect families who have been separated by international crises. The American Red Cross—part of the world’s largest humanitarian network— offers free and confidential services, striving to reconnect loved ones when: • Families are separated as a result of international conflict, disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. • Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. • The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred.

Across international boundaries, the organization offers a beacon of hope for families to be reunited. And though the process can take time, Red Cross volunteers do everything in their power—from phone calls and online searches, to in-person interviews and worldwide travel—to fulfill families’ hopes. “These people have broken hearts,” said Fidele, a Red Cross volunteer from Burundi who was previously reunited with his father after a 20year search. “We ask questions about what their loved one looks like or where they last lived to help us with our search. These questions bring them back to the time they were forced to separate from their families.”

Little Words, Big Impact The organization also makes it possible for displaced individuals to reach out to their families—even half a world away. The family messages transmitted by the American Red Cross can be very brief, but the three short words—“I am alive”—may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught loved ones. To begin a search, contact your local Red Cross chapter—the critical link in your community to the global Red Cross Red Crescent network. You can also call the free national helpline at (844) 782-9441. From Latin America and Africa to Asia and Europe, the American Red Cross helps people in some of the world’s most at-risk communities. This work is powered by the generosity of volunteers and donors. To learn more visit redcross.org/international.

How to show your support for veterans
S
upporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans. There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come. • Visit wounded veterans. The United States Census Bureau reports that more than one-third of the nearly 3.8 million men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 have a service-connected disability. Many of these individuals are fighting to overcome physical injuries sustained while on active duty. Individuals who want to show their support for veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs (VA) facility to arrange a visit to wounded veterans. Such visits can lift veterans’ spirits and reassure them that their sacrifices are both acknowledged and appreciated. • Support legislation that supports veterans. Though it might seem like a no-brainer, legislation to support veterans often faces an uphill battle to get passed. By supporting legislation that ensures veterans get the support they need, individuals can send a message to veterans that they haven’t been forgotten and that the very democratic principles they fought to protect are alive and well. Citizens can write letters to their elected
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
officials, urging them to support veteran-friendly legislation, and raise awareness of bills and laws through social media. • Help raise awareness about homeless veterans. Data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that approximately 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. But that figure doesn’t tell the whole story, as the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans notes that, over the course of a year, roughly twice that many veterans experience homelessness. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) believes that programs to assist homeless veterans should focus on helping them reach a point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. In addition, the NCHV feels that the most effective programs are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Individuals can offer their support to such groups through financial donations or other means so they can continue to ensure no veteran sleeps on the street. Veterans Day is a time to show veterans that their service and sacrifices are not taken for granted. Visiting wounded veterans and supporting efforts to ensure veterans get what they need to live full, healthy and happy lives is a great way to send the message that veterans are appreciated.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest. Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion can take a toll on crops and livestock.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Pack stuff for kids to do. Prevent or delay the “are we there yets” with movies, puzzles, books, and music for children. Pack headphones so their devices will not disturb others.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer • Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
FRIDAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY
WE’RE DEALING! Antiques, Household, Collectibles
• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

SAVE THE DATE!
• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Kudos to Honeoye Central PTA On Friday, October 27th, the Honeoye Central PTA hosted a Trunk n Treat in the parking lot in front of the school. Weather was ideal and so, so many turned out with their children to trick n treat. Thank you to the PTA, the parents that had their vehicles decorated, Richmond Recreation Department, and to the Richmond Fire Department, who all were passing out treats to the many, many children that came. The Honeoye Community should be proud of themselves for making that night perfect from start to finish. Looking forward to next year.
Taunting Neighbors I clean up the leaves by our property line. The neighbors come through after I clean and push their leaves into the area I just cleaned, on my side of the property line. They do this repeatedly every single year, sometimes several times a week. Every time I clean they purposely push their leaves into my yard. They do it solely to taunt me. Guess what, ladies? I’m not stooping to your level. Blow all your leaves into my yard. I don’t care. The joke is on you. Your behavior reflects on you. Not me. Speeders To all the drivers that speed down [local road] with their loud vehicles, get a life. We have walkers and bicyclists who walk and ride all day on this road and you are endangering them along with other drivers who obey the law. You think your loud vehicles are cool, but guess what, they are not. So why don’t you go hang out in the kiddie park where you all belong because none of you should have a license. Hopefully the police will read this and start handing out tickets on [local road] and stop you morons from injuring someone or god forgive KILLING THEM. Ronald Thomas Paul November 1, 2023 Ronald Thomas Paul passed away peacefully on November 1, 2023, at the age of 86. He was born on February 8, 1937, in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, to his late parents Thomas and Catherine Paul. Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia, and their children, Sheri Cottingham (Paul), Brenda Braun (Dale), Robert James (Holly), Gregory James, Melinda Watkins (Stephen), and Michael Paul (Jessica). He was a cherished grandfather to 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Ron is also survived by his brother, Larry Paul (Judy) and sister, Marianne Webb. He was preceded in death by his sister, Suzanne Fels.
Harold “Cubbie” Culbertson 11/24/1941 - 11/2/2023 Born on Thanksgiving Day in 1941, this biggerthan-life man lived his life as fully as he knew how, growing up on a dairy farm, graduating from Dansville High School, serving in the Army National Guard, a member of the Masons and Amaranth, an excellent square dancer, an enthusiastic golfer, a top-notch mechanic & proud owner of Cubbie’s Repair Shop, an active member of the Dansville Presbyterian Church, dedicated groundskeeper for Noyes Hospital & Sonyea Golf Course, and a school bus driver for many years. He loved playing golf, playing cards & marbles, fixing things, watching Fox News, and spending time with his friends & family. Beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to so many. Surviving him are his wife, Judy; his children, Shana (Troy) Conway, Kelly Capozzi, Christine Neary, and James MacDonald Jr (Stacey); grandchildren, Devin Culbertson, Jasmine & Hailey Conway, Brady Fogle (Melissa), Shaunna Bowlby (Corey), Kristen Fitzpatrick (Adam), Steven MacDonald (Casey Chittenden), and Austin Westfall; great-grandchildren, Nathan & Alyson Brown, Avery & Veda Fogle, and Liam & Evelyn Fitzpatrick; siblings, Robert Culbertson, Margaret Bourgoine (Leonard Jr), and Irene Strick. You will be missed, Pa. We love you.
Ron graduated from Emmaus High School in 1955 and went on to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Northrop Institute of Technology. He proudly served in the Air Force for 3 years. Following his military service, Ron embarked on a successful career. He initially worked as a bank property estimator before transitioning into the role of an insurance adjuster. Ron’s expertise in disaster casualty adjustment led him to work for several major insurance companies. Ron was a dedicated member of the Graterford Bible Fellowship Church in PA. After retirement, he and Pat relocated back to New York and began worshiping at Christ Community Church of Geneseo. Outside of his professional life, above all Ron was devoted to his family. He passionately studied the Bible and enjoyed many hobbies such as woodworking, trains, sailing, reading and drawing cartoons. A memorial service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held at Christ Community Church of Geneseo on November 11, 2023, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Christ Community Church of Geneseo. Ron will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his love for the Lord, his sense of humor, and producing wildly-attractive children (just seeing who read the whole thing). His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be cherished.
Celebration of Life will be held on his birthday, Friday November 24 at 1:00pm, Dansville Presbyterian Church, 3 School Street, Dansville. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home in Dansville. To light a candle or leave a condolence, please visit BairdFuneralHomes.com

Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
LAWN & LANDSCAPING
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Add a pop of color with planters. Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity. Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. Taking the next step The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. To learn more about the comprehensive benefits and features, call 1-800-LTC-FEDS (1-800-582-3337) TTY 1-800-843-3557 or visit LTCFEDS.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a Tip * “For that nagging toilet where the chain on the flush lever keeps getting stuck, here’s what I do: Trash that chain and use some curling ribbon. Tie it on and adjust the length. Once you’ve got it set, you shouldn’t have to mess with it again for a very long time!” -- M. in Minnesota * Need pumpkin pie spice? Mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves for each teaspoon needed. * “Clearance aisles and sales are a savvy shopper’s best friend. I buy age-appropriate games and toys all year from sales rack and with coupons, so that I am always armed with birthday presents and donations to holiday drives.” -A.P. in Pennsylvania
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.” -- Abraham Joshua Heschel
* Here’s a great cooking hint: When you want to sear meat, make sure you pat it dry using either paper towels or a kitchen cloth specifically for that purpose. Any moisture on the meat will cause it to steam cook. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

Apply lessons learned during the pandemic. A recent Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. government and Eurostat data found that roughly 9.6 million workers in the United States lost their jobs in the first three quarters of 2020. That period coincides with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When forced to confront sudden and unexpected job losses, millions of individuals learned how to get by on less income. Cost-saving measures adopted during the pandemic can be continued or reimplemented, helping individuals to combat higher energy costs and other rising expenses.

SHOPPING LOCALLY
It Matt ers
I
t matters where you shop. Where you spend your hard earned money. Your local merchant is working just as hard to earn your money. And when you choose to not support your local merchant and shop outside your community or county, you’ve robbed yourself of the benefits of your money staying where you live. THINK LOCAL, especially at this gifting time of year. Make it a Merry Christmas for all of us because, ‘it matters!’
The feel-good factor Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
Create job opportunities Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, along with their employees. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she - or a relative - will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals.
Keep more money in the community The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays.
Enjoy a more local flavor National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses may also be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains.

LEAF PICKUP SCHEDULE Leaf pickup will begin Thursday, October 19th and run through Friday, December 1st. How To Place Leaves for Pickup Leaves should be placed close to the edge of the road. They should not extend onto the road. Leaves should not be placed in ditches or covering storm sewer drains. Doing this will obstruct the storm drains which will increase the risk of flooding. Leaves should be in a long row no farther off the road than 8 feet. Do not mix branches of foreign objects with the leaves. This can cause damage to the machine that picks up the leaves. Refer to branch pickup for branches.

ecently I was having breakfast with friends, one of whom volunteers at the local Canandaigua hospice. Knowing my interest in aviation, she told me of a resident who had an interesting life in aviation. His name is Millard Harmon, and I was intrigued by what she had to say. My friend arranged a meeting which I anticipated would be just an informal talk about flying. When I walked into Mill’s room and saw a very large photo of an airplane on the wall, I knew I was in the presence of an aviator. Harmon had an extensive flying background including achieving over 150 aviation records, and he has a connection to our museum. I realized an article for the newsletter needed to be written. Millard reluctantly gave up flying at age 82 (he’s now in his 90s). He’s had a very fruitful love affair with aviation after getting his license at age 17. After attaining his license, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944 and served as a crew chief. During his enlistment he managed to get some flight time on the AT-6. Once out of the military he completed a Doctorate program in Education Administration at Boston University after, in partial fulfillment of the degree program, he studied in the USSR. Among his educational accomplishments, he sent the first group of SUNY students to study Russian language and culture in the USSR. He also established SUNY’s aviation program allowing students to work toward a Private Pilot license. Millard has consulted with US Steel, Ford Motor Company, and Aeroflot (Russia’s state-owned airline). He retired in 1983 to devote his time to the benefits of general aviation – Millard Harmons Wings of Friendship safe, efficient, and a in hangar means of extending good will and humanitarianism throughout the world. He did this through the purchase of a Beechcraft 36, a 6-seat single engine propeller airplane with 285 horsepower. He used it for “friendship flights” while setting speed records. The airplane has been flown to Europe, the USSR, Africa, the Caribbean, and of course throughout the USA.

Cuba. Because of the US trade embargo at the time, the plan was to fly to the Cayman Islands and then transfer the medicine from there to Havana. However, while enroute, the Beech developed engine problems and he was forced to divert to Cuba. He offloaded the medicine and then ran into problems with US authorities who did not believe his story about the diversion. In the end, the authorities confiscated his aircraft, and he was forced to pay $34,000 in fines to get it back. At one time Harmon lived in the Geneseo area while keeping a previously owned airplane at Perry-Warsaw. While in Geneseo, he helped build the runway the National Warplane Museum uses today. Millard loved flying and equally loved using it for the welfare of all. He opened the way for general aviation pilots to fly into the USSR and brought American goodwill all over the world. “Those of us who love flying can’t get enough of it,” Harmon said. Dr. Millard Harmon was a retired academic administrator who operated a small independent think tank in Delmar, NY. He was owner and chief pilot of Ten Romeo, a 1969 single engine Beech-36 aircraft now part of the collection at Beechcraft Heritage Museum in TN. Ten Romeo held 156 speed records and carried medicines and goodwill to children all over the world. John Millard Harmon, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on July 5, 2023, at Light Hill Comfort Care Home in Canandaigua. For more information about the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, including their annual airshow in June as well as their quarterly newsletter, Hangar Tales, visit nationalwarplanemuseum.com.
Mill’s flying records include first place in the 2,100-mile Grand Prix Air Race, a 1987 speed record from Washington DC to Moscow, and a speed record between Greenland and the North Pole. One of his adventures involved flying $50,000 worth of medicines for hospitalized children in

Hyaluronic Acid Can Improve Joint Pain, but Isn’t Recommended

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend recommended hyaluronic acid for joint pain in my wrist and hand. I have been taking 180 mg once a day for a couple months now and have experienced notable success. I also feel that my neck pain and range of motion in my neck have improved. My question is, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? Is it safe, and are there any side effects I should be aware of? -- T.E. ANSWER: Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance composed of long strings of sugar. Because of this structure, it carries a great deal of water, so it acts as a shock absorber and lubricant for several places in the body, including the joints. Hyaluronic supplements are usually purified from chicken cartilage, but can also be produced by bacterial fermentation. The body makes about 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. Multiple studies on injections of hyaluronic acid have shown that it is only slightly better than a placebo at treating arthritis, especially of the knee. I have stopped recommending injection treatments to my patients with knee arthritis, as they are quite expensive. Oral hyaluronic acid, however, is inexpensive. There have been several small studies showing benefit (again, mostly for the knee rather than the neck), but I couldn’t find any well-done large studies that were convincing. There is very little harm from hyaluronic acid. None of the studies I’ve read found any serious side effects; however, that doesn’t mean it is completely safe, since supplements aren’t regulated the way prescription medicines are. But I can conclude that oral hyaluronic acid is possibly effective and probably safe for treatment of osteoarthritis. The studies have mostly used doses in the 100-200 mg range, but I have seen supplements for sale that have 20 mg or less of hyaluronic acid. I’m glad you are taking a similar dosage to what is shown to be effective.
UNIQUE WAYS TO REDUCE CANCER RISK EVERY DAY Quit when you hear the click at the gas station. The Air Pollution Control District of Santa Barbara County in California notes that gasoline vapors include a variety of toxic substances, including benzene. Benzene is an air pollutant that adversely affects the central nervous system, the respiratory tract and the immune system. Modern automobiles now click when the gas tank is full and it’s vital that drivers avoid adding any more gas after they hear that click. Drivers may be accustomed to topping off after the click, but doing so can affect the vapor recovery system in a car. That system is designed to keep toxic chemicals like benzene out of the air. Topping off can needlessly expose drivers and their passengers to benzene, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers a carcinogen, or cancer-causing chemical.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Thinking about New Eyewear?
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Livingston Eye Care
Behaving well around service animals
Dr. Jennifer J. Dotterweich, Optometrist 243 East Main St., Avon 585-226-3400
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you kindly remind your readers that service animals and companion animals are not there for other people’s amusement? Too often, people who see a service dog in public will rush up and try to pet the dog or even hug them. Please educate them on the proper etiquette when they see a service pet. -- Janine D. in Syracuse, New York
visionsource-livingstoneyecare.com Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.
Give Back And Feel Rewarded
DEAR JANINE: Thank you for this timely reminder. Service animals are highly trained to provide assistance to their owners for specific health or mobility issues. Companion animals provide crucial emotional support to owners as well. With any pet, it’s not just good manners to ask before approaching or trying to touch them. It’s also a safe way to interact with pets and their owners. This is especially important with service and companion animals. They’re doing a job when out in public. For example, seizure alert dogs are trained to detect an approaching seizure and will gently warn their owners to get to a safe place. Mobility assistance dogs help owners maintain their balance, or with tasks like pressing buttons and opening doors. It isn’t always evident that they’re working, either. For example, you may see an autism support dog sitting or lying next to their owner. They’re not off duty; they’re helping their person stay calmer in a social setting. Some good behaviors around service animals include: -- Speak to the owner/handler, not to the animal. -- Don’t touch, talk to, feed or handle the service animal. -- Guide/service dogs have the right of way. HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias.
