etter Homes, located at 13 Ossian Street in Dansville, NY, has quite a spooky history. Todd Pike, who has worked with Better Homes for 20 years, explained that the building has been used as a furniture store since it was built in 1923. However, its early years included something a little out of the ordinary. Not only was the building a furniture store, but it was also used as a funeral home!
Active Living 50+ ___________________40
There isn’t much information to be found on the family that owned this original dual business, but we do know that the basement housed the funeral home’s crematorium. It was common during the early 1900s to use one location for more than one business, no matter how unrelated those two businesses may have been. In this case, you could have been shopping for a couch as you attended a relative’s funeral!
Auctions & Antiques ____________________33 Automotive _____________________4 Body & Mind _____________________8
While the Ossian Street building has been a furniture store for nearly 100 years, Better Homes has been in it only for the most recent 25, that is, in its post-funeral parlor days. Nevertheless, employees have had some frights over the years. A few of the staff members once watched a whole box of light bulbs fly right off a shelf…all by itself!
Classifieds ____________________54 Employment ____________________41
Although no actual ghosts have ever been seen on the premises, plenty have been heard. Based on a first-hand account from Todd Pike, he has heard footsteps upstairs in the building when no one else was there. “It sounds like someone walking around,” he said. “But I never see anything or anyone.”
Garage Sales ____________________28 Give & Take _____________________11
The creepy feeling from this unknown could send chills up anyone’s spine! According to Pike, everyone who works at the business has experienced eerie sounds and unexplained occurrences except for the owner’s wife, Pam Horton. At least…she hasn’t yet.
Home Services ____________________18 Hometown Events ____________________12 Kidz Korner ____________________38
Sometimes, previous employees of the building’s furniture stores of yesteryear come by and tell stories of their Historic photo of the Ossian Street storefront own experiences from many years ago. Nevertheless, Better Homes owners Bill and Pam Horton take their building’s colorful lore in good humor. Undaunted, they continue to supply quality products to area homes.
Passages ____________________34 Pet Place _____________________7 Puzzle Answers ____________________31
This November, Better Homes is celebrating 25 years of successful business in its “spirited” historical building. In fact, their anniversary specials just may give you shivers…of excitement! While Better Homes can’t promise any supernatural sightings, it is happy to offer “scary” good deals.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Need a new look for a favorite sweater? Change out your buttons. It’s such a small thing, but makes a big change in look!” -- E.L. in Massachusetts * Instead of using costly brass polish, try a little lemon juice and salt. Another brass polish you probably have right now is ketchup. Apply a thin layer and buff off with a soft rag. * Experts say to always crack your egg on a flat surface, rather than using the edge of a counter or bowl. More egg-tastic advice is to crack eggs into a small bowl instead of directly into ingredients. If you have a sneaky “bad egg” in your dozen, it’s better to find out before you ruin your baking. * “I love to search for recipes online, and I have learned to pay attention to the comments section. You’ll find a lot of explanation and frequently a tweak that many people have found successful. Comments have saved me from oversalting a dish, as well as making necessary adjustments in temperature and cooking time. I have found complicated techniques broken down in ways that were helpful. It pays to check out the comments!” -- W.G. in Missouri * Attention salad eaters: Got a thick dressing that’s high in fat? Rinse lettuce before dressing your salad. Wet or moist lettuce traps less dressing. If your dressing is light, give salad greens an extra spin. Drier lettuce holds on to dressing, making lightly dressed salad more flavorful. * Another great use for baking soda: Add a cup or two to your toilet bowl. Swish and let sit for 1-2 hours. Flush for odor control and shine. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Halloween is upon us again, and while the tricks and treats are fun for kids, they can be dangerous for our pets. Please remind your readers that the candies and chocolates in a trick-or-treat bag or sitting by the door are hazardous because many of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats. -- Cheryl T., Lansing, Michigan DEAR CHERYL: You’re absolutely right! Dogs especially are at risk from ingesting Halloween candy, but any pet in the house can be at risk from not just these foods but some popular decorations as well. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Sugar-free candies can be toxic as well, especially if they contain xylitol. Keep all candy, chocolate and gum out of pets’ reach during the festivities. Afterward, store leftover candy up out of their reach. Make sure children don’t hide bags of candy where a pet can get at them, such as under the bed. Help them find a location that they can access but the dog can’t. Decorations may be a hazard as well, not just to your pets but to wildlife. That stretchy material used to create fake spiderwebs outdoors can trap birds and insects. Cats may ingest the strands if they are fascinated with the texture. Avoid burning real candles as they may get knocked over by a pet. If your pet does get into the candy bowl or eats a decoration, contact the veterinarian right away. They’ll advise you whether to bring your pet in right away for treatment, or to watch for signs of illness (such as constant drooling, vomiting, lethargy or changes in personality).

INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. Choosing Not to Treat Prostate Cancer
Livingston Eye Care
---
Dr. Jennifer J. Dotterweich, Optometrist 243 East Main St., Avon 585-226-3400
visionsource-livingstoneyecare.com WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

Now accepting new patients Free exam and X-rays for new patients. Dr. Dan Doaga and Staff are excited to announce our merger with Dr. Belbas’ dental practice. We are pleased to continue your dental care from Dr. John Belbas at his current location, 3513 Thomas Drive, Suite 8, Lakeville. We will have the same staff and some new faces. We wish Dr. Belbas many wonderful years of retirement.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Every year, I used to get a physical, which included a prostate exam as well as blood tests with PSA. When my doctor retired, I had a hard time finding a new one I liked. It has been three or four years since my prostate was checked, but my new doctor doesn’t do the prostate exams (I am 63). He says that recent studies do not recommend them, and I have seen news reports about the unreliability of the PSA test. How do you find out if you have prostate cancer if you don’t look for it? My brother-in-law found out he had it at 52, and it was successfully treated. I don’t really want to wait until I am showing symptoms, and there is no history in my direct family. What do you think about this? -- T.D. ANSWER: Prostate cancer isn’t really one disease. It can be very aggressive -- both with local invasion and spreading to bones quickly -- but it also can be very indolent, hardly growing at all over years. Yearly prostate cancer screening with PSA is more likely to find the slower-growing cancers, since they are around for a long time. The goal of screening is to find aggressive cancers, the fast-growing ones that can go from undetectable to too-late-to-do-anything-about in a very short time. But a downside is that screening may lead to unnecessary treatment of the more-indolent cancers, most of which can be carefully monitored and will not need surgery or radiation, at least not for years. If a man elects to undergo prostate cancer screening, he should understand the benefits (finding prostate cancer early enough it can be cured) and the risks (treatment for prostate cancer causes complications frequently; these can include incontinence and loss of sexual function). Not treating low-risk prostate cancer reduces the risks. Low-risk prostate cancer is defined by a PSA below 10, a very small or non-detectable tumor by palpation or imaging and a low Gleason score, which is based on how the tissue looks to the pathologist. Six or less is low risk. Most men in this situation do not need immediate treatment. Some men have difficulty NOT treating cancer, but treatment does not appear to improve the already good prognosis. Choosing not to treat is hard for some men. ***

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

S E V RA Wren lesson congratulations! Thank you and congratulations to the person who was corrected about the nesting habits of wrens. So many today take umbrage and become angry at anyone who doesn't totally agree with them or who finds fault with them. This person's gracious response lightened my day almost as much as watching those creatures who inhabit our environment with us. Thank you, Dr. Krisy, and staff "It's another trip to York Veterinary Clinic for me. I have been paralyzed since January, but now, I am back to 95% walking and running! Dr. Krisy and staff (and my mom) are awseome! Thanks to therapy from Dr. Krisy, I can walk with just a little limp, and I can scratch my ears now with help from mom or dad. At the vet, Dr. Krissy and each tech and staff member called me by name. Their love and kindness made me wag my tail. My mom and I don't have enough words to say thank you for an awesome job. God bless you and keep up the good work! “ - Symon Wren update If you can bear to read one last comment about the birds in the Penny Saver tube: I decided the birds weren't actually going to use the nest, so I removed the twigs and discovered, tucked into the back corner, the sweetest little nest, all woven with fine twigs and feathers. It was, to my mind, a perfect nest but a terrible location (roadside). I hope the lady wren found as nice a nest somewhere to her liking. Livonia Library Book Sale I would like to thank everyone involved in the Livonia Library Book Sale! It was fabulous! Thank you to the beautiful lady who helped carry my purchases to my car. Your sale made my day. The Livonia Library rocks! - Mary
Zero not Hero? For shame! You should be ashamed of yourself, calling hospital and medical workers "zeroes." They have worked countless hours from the very beginning, sacrificing their time with friends, their families, and their own safety without the vaccine. They deserve the same inherent rights as you do, including the right to decide what is best for themselves and their families. Are you aware that even if you are vaccinated, you can still pass the virus on to that child you mentioned? Before you point fingers, why don't you consider that you could just as easily pass it on to someone else? How dare you think you have the right to call out these incredible people who worked throughout this entire pandemic? They need and deserve our support! Instead of telling people to quit and retire from careers they love, why don't you move to someplace [where] they would appreciate your willingness to take away people's rights to their bodies...? RN Zero This is all you need to know. "Evidence suggests the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program has substantially reduced the burden of disease in the United States by preventing serious illness in fully vaccinated people and interrupting chains of transmission." - CDC. You need a refresher course. Immunity is your own body? No medical professional should put any patient at risk with anything in any way. Thank God you are retired, or I would say to get out of this profession! I know many people who don't want a nurse like you taking care of them, especially with your attitude. Coaching Kids I understand all volunteers are working so hard to give our children wonderful experiences. However, if you sign up for that position, please really want to do it and invest in it. A couple weekends ago, an organization came to our school for a game, and it seemed like there was no adult coach for the juniors team around anywhere. A couple young girls were running the squad. I overheard what sounded just like bullying from the one child helper to another girl in the squad, instead of coaching. The coach was nowhere to be found to intervene. Young girls aren’t ready to be coaches of other young girls yet. They need an adult around. Coach the older girls to be helpers and make sure the young ones are learning but also not being bullied or hurt. Let’s help them to feel safe and want to come back and learn again next year.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * President John F. Kennedy was buried without his brain. The original reason given was that it had been “lost” during his autopsy, but in 2018, newly released U.S. government documents revealed that his brother, Robert Kennedy, ordered the brain secretly destroyed to ensure that it would never be displayed in a museum.

Lane “Roger” Bailey (Hoss): October 20, 2021 Avon, Portageville: Roger passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the age of 69 after a courageous battle with ALS. He was predeceased by his parents, Ward Bailey and Maxine Beardsley. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Rosemary; stepdaughter, Tina (Justin) Lippa; granddaughters, Courtney (Nicholas) DiMartino and Kathryn Lippa; brother-in-law, David (Ellen) Tarmino; siblings, Wayne (Donna) Bailey, Duane (Cindy) Bailey, Lorraine (Walter) Scott, Dale Bailey, Sue (Brad) Kenyon, Craig (Kathy) Bailey, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Roger was touched by the love and generosity of special family members including sister, Valerie (Guy) Pirdy; sister-in-law, Fran, her husband, Bob Brooks, Aunt Jean and Uncle Joe Santacroce, Aunt Amy Cirri, and cousin, Judy Warth. Roger was a loving daddy to his fur babies Josie and Rita and will be sadly missed by them. Roger enjoyed meeting his friends for coffee, anything to do with farming, and the Buffalo Bills. At Roger’s request, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Preplanning a funeral may sound morbid, as few people want to think about their deaths or discuss dying with their families. But there are numerous benefits to preplanning funerals.
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Buying life insurance. Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

Butch specialized in disaster cleanup and pipeline clearing. He worked to help restore power after 11 hurricanes, 2 tornadoes and 1 ice storm. After 44 years of faithful service Butch retired from Terry Tree. Butch did find time for some fun: he enjoyed mudding and was a huge historic military buff. He always enjoyed a good joke or prank at someone else’s expense. Butch will be greatly missed, but will be remembered with a smile. A graveside service will take place privately at Oaklawn Cemetery in West Sparta, NY. Memorial Contributions can be made to: James P. “Our fathers teach us what we should become; our mothers teach us what we are…” ~ Peter Davidson
Forever In Our Hearts & Thoughts Love, Mom, dad, siblings & families
Lucky is the child who has two devoted parents. Guidance from both mother and father may be equally important, but it’s apt to come from slightly different viewpoints. It’s perhaps natural that a father wants to help us amount to something and avoid the troubles that could damage our lives. Mothers want that for us, too, but they’re more likely to be realistic. They are better at helping us to recognize our strengths and weaknesses… to understand our potential in terms of what we really are. You may call on us for advice and guidance such as you would expect from your closest friends. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust. A Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, from our staff.

HOMETOWN
Tyler Whitney Wolcott, Esq. October 8, 2021 Beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin, husband, and father—died suddenly on October 8, 2021, at age 35 after a brief battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He is survived by his wife, Beth-Marie (nee Russ); son, Oliver age 3, and daughter, Evelyn 1 year old; as well as parents, Roberta and Dana Wolcott and brother, Thomas; maternal grandmother, Lucille Overton; uncle, Father Troy Overton; along with numerous Wolcott family uncles, aunts, and cousins. Tyler was born on February 4, 1986. He graduated from Avon Central High School in 2004. Tyler played numerous sports at Avon, including Little League, mini hoops, hockey, JV and Varsity baseball, basketball, football, and golf. Tyler graduated from SUNY Albany in 2010 with a degree in Political Science, and he proudly graduated magna cum laude from Albany Law School in 2015. During law school, he interned for the Albany environmental law firm of Read and Laniado; they were so impressed with his work that they hired him upon graduation. Tyler flourished with a wonderful, new extended family and life in Albany. He and his family enjoyed many visits to Pyramid Life Center in the Adirondacks, and he enthusiastically played darts, corn hole, beer pong and fantasy football. The annual Russ Family Reunion in Dryden, NY was his favorite beer pong tournament and the site of his September 10, 2016, wedding to Beth. From environmental attorney to friend of many, Tyler’s greatest passion was being the proud father of Oliver and Evelyn. Words cannot express the sadness for the void felt by all who knew Tyler and for his children who will not get to experience the guidance and love they would have known from their Daddy. R.I.P. A celebration of life memorial is being planned for Spring 2022. Memories from family and friends will be most welcome then.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Turkey or Ham? What is Thanksgiving going to look like this year? That’s a big question, and many of us don’t have the answers yet. Part of it depends on whether we’re still the ones cooking the turkey or whether that particular baton was passed years ago. Part of it depends on whether we’re close enough to relatives that they can drive over or whether somebody would be required to board a plane. Part of it depends on whether anyone present has a pre-existing condition that would make getting COVID especially risky. I’ve done an informal poll of those around me and scattered across the country. One person has flatly stated that his family will all be present with the triple garage turned into a big dining room. Another said it will be a repeat of last year with everyone in their own home with online meeting software running during dinner. Another is delivering a turkey dinner to her mother. Yet another is taking his parents out to a fancy buffet. Some say it all depends on whether everyone in the group has been vaccinated. Some don’t want to take the shot. Many refuse to be around those who didn’t take the shot. A few are leery of small children who aren’t eligible for the shot, but who are in school with others whose parents might or might not have gotten vaccinated. Or maybe there’s a teen who’s been released from home prison, as they’re calling it, and might or might not have been socially distancing from pals or wearing a mask, which might or might not work anyway. Then there’s the wee matter of breathing used air on planes and whether we’re sitting next to someone who sneaks off his mask when the stewardesses aren’t looking. It gets complicated, this business of calculating how to handle Thanksgiving. The biggest debate used to be: turkey or ham? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gift giving in the workplace can be challenging territory to navigate. And as anyone who has received an inappropriate gift or something that really wasn’t useful can attest, he or she probably doesn’t want to face a situation in which a gift leads to office gossip. According to a poll conducted by Harris, around half of workers plan to gift at least one business associate around the holidays but are confused about what to give. Too often it’s up to workers to navigate these etiquette minefields on their own, but the following tips can help the process go smoothly. Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grab anything off the shelf. But the gift should not be something that would offend tastes or sentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift. Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment. Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift. Follow the rules. Gift exchanges should be cleared with supervisors or human resources professionals. It pays to check if there are rules in place for gifting others. Avoid cash gifts. Giving cash or checks is not a good idea. Money should only come by way of bonuses from higher-ups. If you’re stuck on what to give, a gift card to a store that a coworker visits is acceptable.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working. EMPLOYMENT
