EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas. Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

Fire Safety Protocols To Keep In Mind When Holiday Decorating • Buy the safest lights. It might be tempting to buy the most inexpensive lights, especially given all the extra costs already associated with the holiday season. However, safety should be the utmost priority when buying new lights. Testing laboratories such as CSA, Intertek and UL certify products to ensure they’re safe for use. Products that aren’t certified should be avoided. • Use lights and cords where they’re intended to be used. The packaging on lights will indicate if the product is intended to be used indoors or outdoors. It’s vital that individuals decorating their homes pay attention to these labels. Extension cords made for indoors also should not be used outdoors and vice versa.

Enjoy Christmas Themed Pancakes during the month of December!

• Be especially careful with candles. Candles should only be burned when adults are in the room and should always be extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. When burning candles, place them on heat-resistant surfaces that are beyond the reach of curious kids and pets. Never place candles within arm’s length of Christmas trees or houseplants, including poinsettias.

Christmas Tree • Snowman Pancake Stocking Pancake • Candy Cane Pancake Bell Pancake • Ornament Pancake

• Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs.

See us for more details and topping options!

• Do not pinch light cords. Stringing lights can be a hassle, but cords should never be pinched in doors or windows or beneath interior and exterior furniture. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the cord, which in turn increases the likelihood of fire.

• Avoid overloading circuits. Overloaded circuits pose a significant fire hazard. When plugging in lights, choose outlets that aren’t already occupied by devices and other electronics. If need be, unplug appliances like televisions and devices while lights are on and plugged in.

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

AVON

Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonize. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a pefect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

Kudos to you! Learning that the long-time GVPS Circulation Manager is retiring I feel the need to send my best wishes for her retirement and many, many thanks for a job well done. I’ve had occasion, a few times in the past, to pass on questions to her (I was a long-time employee at GVPS). Each time the situation was taken care of promptly. Good luck to you, Shari! Audrey What a wonderful gesture A big thank you to the thoughtful gentlemen who handed out cards at ALDIs in Geneseo wishing us a wonderful Thanksgiving and tucking $50 bills inside. I was blown away. I’m so thankful to see that wonderful and selfless people are present in a hostile, at times, world. Bless you! You made our thanksgiving!

Our Turn to Pay it Backward I was disappointed to read the rant from my fellow senior citizen complaining about paying school taxes. I need to remind the writer that when our children were in school, seniors citizens at that time paid to support them. The medicare and social security benefits that we receive come from the taxes that current workers pay. Think about how our lives would be affected if young people questioned why they should support baby boomers and refused to pay their medicare and social security taxes. Current workers are paying it forward to help us and it is our duty to pay it backward to help the students of today become successful productive citizens. Why can’t we get along? Every week it seems that there is somebody complaining about their neighbors. Why can’t we all follow the Golden Rule of treating others as you would want to be treated? Some of the things people do to their neighbors are inconsiderate while some of the things people complain about their neighbors doing are trivial. How about thinking about your actions and how it may affect your neighbors before you act. I’m always touched by the neighbors who mow lawns and do snow removal to make their neighbors lives easier as it is evidence of how our neighborhoods should be. Why don’t we all begin next week with the goal of making our neighborhood a better place? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Hard Candy Christmas - Dolly Parton EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am concerned, and have been for some time, about whether my prescriptions that arrive by mail are compromised, since they sit in vehicles with the sun beating through the windows, heating them up. Also, the plastic bottles in which the prescriptions are stored give off toxic emissions as they “broil” in the sun. The instructions that come with some of the meds warn about heat as well. My pharmacist told me that heat does affect a medication’s effectiveness negatively. So, if this is true, millions of us are taking important medications that are basically not doing the job. After all, the meds that arrive at pharmacies come in hot vehicles, too. What’s your take? -- J.Z. ANSWER: All medicines should be stored in a cool, dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Studies have proven that medicines sent by mail order can indeed get out of their published temperature range. While this happens most often in mailboxes, I understand your point about medications “broiling” in hot temperatures during the shipment itself. Liquid medicines, hormones and nitroglycerin are among the most sensitive. Medicines that need to be dosed exactly, such as transplant rejection medicines, biologicals, and seizure medicines, are also particularly likely to cause problems if they are damaged during shipping. Although some medicines are supposed to be shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, this isn’t always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. Many states have requirements about customers using retail pharmacies. If that’s not the case for you, try to make sure that the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (you can ask your pharmacist about others), request that your mail-order pharmacy sends it in special packaging during warm weather. You might also consider having them shipped to a place where they will be put into a temperature-controlled environment right away. ***

Uprising’s Super Kids Program Shows Children They Too Can Change the World BY SUZIE WELLS

F

or the past five years, spring means SuperKids time at Honeoye Falls’ Manor Elementary School. Inspired by clinical social worker and parent of a special needs son, Amie Wagner and the phenomenal team at Manor School coordinate this event to help show that kids of all abilities can achieve and exceed personal goals, and no matter their abilities, they too can change the world. Led by Special Education teacher, Margaret Allen, students in the Language Enriched Academic Program (LEAP) classroom at Manor take the lead each year in the SuperKids event. Students learn about the history of the SuperKids event, its beneficiary, Uprising, a nonprofit that has helped build Little Wings Academy in rural Kankoole, Uganda, where there had previously been little access to education. LEAP students share this information as well as Uprising’s current goals with the rest of the Manor students, presenting to classes and making posters to spread the word around the school. LEAP students learn real-world skills with their coffee cart and soup cart throughout the school year, proceeds of which they donate to the SuperKids event each spring. Manor physical education teachers prepare students across the school for the event day. All students make goals for themselves, whether it be number of laps around the track or some other goal, and then they raise money through family and friends who sponsor their achievements. On event day, Allen’s LEAP students work with the PE teachers to make the event a success. Each year, music blasts to help motivate the students’ laps, students wear superhero capes as desired, and each participant works toward their personal goal. Wagner says she sends a special shout out to the phys ed department because they’ve run the event in rain and snow, and always keep spirits high to illuminate the event no matter the weather. She says the year it rained all day, PE teachers even made garbage bag ponchos for the kids and everyone still had a blast. Wagner notes that the first year of SuperKids, when her son was a student in the LEAP classroom, his goal had been to make it around the track one time with his walker. Five years later, now a 10th grader, Teagan made it two miles around the track throughout that day. Many of Teagan’s teachers remain at Manor, so Amie says it’s been so special for him to return each year for the SuperKids event.

HFL students have raised money to help build the school in Kankoole, install clean drinking water for the school and its community, and helps children who would otherwise not attend school get an education. Little Wings Academy now educates 440 students in nursery school through seventh grade. Thanks to Uprising and the SuperKids program, children attend the school regardless of their family’s ability to pay the small tuition. Wagner explains that families alternatively help in the community garden the program helped grow. This one-acre garden feeds the school children, for many of whom this is the only consistent food they have. Last year, Uprising was able to install a second water tank at the school to accommodate the school and community’s growing needs, and they also installed solar panels on the school, as there is no electricity in Kankoole. Though they haven’t yet announced this year’s goals, Wagner says they hope to fund more desks and finish construction projects, as well as someday have computers for teachers and maybe students, luxuries we take for granted. Long-term goals of the garden include working toward ownership instead of leasing the land, and maybe adding livestock to generate income for the school and become more self-sustainable to cover teacher salaries, school supplies, etc. Wagner’s favorite part of the SuperKids program is “kids helping kids.” She says the children in both Uganda AND Honeoye Falls benefit from the event, with children here learning that “through compassion and hard work they can change the world.” Amie offers incredible life advice: “We rise by lifting others. Even during the hard times, no matter what is going on in the world, don’t let it change your heart or your compassion.”

Wagner says that as a parent of a child with special needs, SuperKids offers an opportunity that’s usually lacking for such students to shine and be seen as exceptional, confident, capable, and compassionate. Teagan now thrives in the Abilities Movement program, training for people with disabilities, and his physical limitations won’t stop him. Through the SuperKids program, HFL students help vulnerable Ugandan children through the Uprising organization that provides educational and vocational opportunities to help break the cycle of poverty and build a different future.

Consolidate memories. Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. Here’s a Tip * Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great uses: 1. Use as a weather strip along the bottom of your garage door. 2. Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3.Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit and slip it over the blade. * “If a small screw keeps coming loose on something, remove it, paint it with clear nail polish and rescrew quickly. This often does the trick. My dog loves scraps from the table, and I want to make sure my Thanksgiving dinner guests don’t feed him something dangerous. -- Manuel C., San Antonio, Texas DEAR MANUEL: It may be difficult to keep tabs on all of your dinner guests, so consider placing your dog in a room or in his kennel during the meal and then rewarding him after with some tasty leftovers. When he does get his treat, make sure that it doesn’t include the following ingredients: onions, garlic, raisins or avocado. Turkey is fine; take the skin off to remove extra salt and seasonings that might upset his stomach. Avoid feeding him stuffing. The mashed potatoes should be plain, and hold the gravy. A little apple or pumpkin pie should be fine, but keep him away from chocolate. And try to limit the amount of fat in the leftovers, because too much can cause some messy digestive problems.

Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

The same rules apply to cats, by the way. Because they’re small, they may have a more severe reaction to ingredients like grapes, avocados or onions. It can be difficult to keep track of what your pet is eating during the busy holiday season, especially during big meals. That’s why I recommend placing pets in a separate room until people are done eating and the food is put away out of reach. You still need to control their diet, and you can’t always catch Aunt Gladys sneaking peanut butter cups to the dog. Enjoy your holiday, and thanks for keeping your pet safe!

Planning pointers for holiday hosts Hosting is a significant part of the holiday season. From late November until New Year's Day, millions of people across North America welcome friends and family into their homes. Whether you're hosting a small gathering with locally based loved ones or welcoming distant relatives into your home for several days, the following are some planning pointers to ensure your home is ready and guests feel welcome this holiday season.

• Hire a local cleaning service. The holiday season can be hectic. Holiday functions at school, office parties, community events, and more fill up social schedules between late November and early January. Busy social schedules leave little time for house cleaning, which is a must before welcoming guests into a home. A local cleaning service can clean the whole house for hosts welcoming overnight guests or focus on a few popular entertaining areas if party guests will be going home at the end of the night. • Get an early head count. Ask party invitees and prospective overnight guests to RSVP early enough to ensure you can accommodate everyone's needs. Additional seating may be required for holiday parties, while hosts may need to arrange for extra bedding for overnight guests. The earlier you know who's coming, and potentially staying, the more time you have to ensure you can accommodate everyone. • Rent items from a local party supply store. When hosting large gatherings, a local party supply store can be the place to go for decorations, seating, food trays and utensils, and more. Such establishments also may rent specialty supplies like outdoor heat lamps for cold weather parties or tents and outdoor tables and chairs in areas where the weather is warm during the holiday season. Hosts can typically rent everything they need to host the party, saving them the expense of buying items that may just sit in storage the rest of the year. • Arrange for transportation. Whether guests are flying in from distant lands or local friends, relatives or neighbors stopping in for the night, hosts can arrange for transportation to and from their homes to ensure everyone arrives safely and makes it home without incident. Pick overnight guests up at the airport so they see a friendly face upon arrival. When hosting gatherings with local family and friends, encourage others to share how they intend to get home and recruit designated drivers if you intend to serve alcohol. Hosts can take heed of these planning pointers so guests feel welcome and have a good time this holiday season. TF23B455

AMERICAN FLAG ETIQUETTE According to USFlag.org, the American flag should be raised quickly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. While the Flag Code suggests the flag should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset, if it is displayed at night, it should be illuminated. The flag should be saluted as it is hoisted, and when lowered that salute should be held until the flag is unsnapped from the halyard or through the final note of music, whichever is the longest. When displayed indoors, the flag should be displayed to the right of the speaker, staging area or sanctuary. Any additional flags hanging in the room should always hang to the left of the American flag. When flags are grouped for display, the American flag should be in the center and at the highest point of any flag.

Estate planning is a process that is difficult to discuss, but one that is essential to maximize your assets and ensure your end-of-life wishes are honored.

Russell John St. Clair November 10, 2023 We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Russell John St. Clair on November 10th, 2023, following a motor vehicle accident. He is survived by his son Eric Russell and his granddaughter Scarlett Jayne, his mother Patricia (St. Clair, Hicks) Swick, his sisters Linda (Rouland) Kilpatrick, Laurel St. Clair, Sheri (William) Lane, and his brothers Charles (Doris) St. Clair and Andrew (Tammy) St. Clair. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews as well. He was predeceased by his father Charles William St. Clair Sr.. Rusty was a jack of all trades. From a young age, if it had a motor he took it apart to see how it worked. If it did not run, he could fix it. Plumbing, electrical, auto repair and building; he could do it all. He was like MacGyver. He could take pieces and parts and make them into something. He was rough around the edges, but was always there to help when needed. He is leaving a huge void that he did not even know he filled. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. We will hold a Celebration of his life on December 9th, 2023 from Noon to 6 PM at the Avon Veterans Hall 5480 E. Avon Rd., Avon, NY 14414.

“Education is that which remains when one has forgotten everything he learned in school....” ~ Albert Einstein Obviously, Einstein was speaking of so-called higher education. Our basic primary schools teach us to read, write and calculate.... the foundation of all future learning.... and these skills cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most important thing we learn as we advance in our studies is that we have much more to be learned. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the value and the power of knowledge. We learn that we can never know everything but we also learn that we can find out, from various sources, what we need to know. We recognize that there is sometimes a need for a non-traditional, minimum service. We can supply whatever a family desires at whatever price they feel to be appropriate.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says.

Miller Plumbing Inc.

With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.

For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com. VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

Quitting a job can be full of mixed emotions. Just be sure to time it correctly and leave in as positive a way as possible to maintain a strong professional network.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.
