‘tis the season STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES (NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers.

COUNTRY CHRISTMAS

Small Businesses, Big Benefits Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:

FRI. & SAT. 9AM-9PM; SUN. 10AM-5PM Featuring locally handmade holiday gifts and decorations from numerous artisans & crafters

• Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it

Rosenbauer Homestead

Holiday Open House & Craft Show November 17th, 18th & 19th

2273 Pond Road • Bloomfield, NY

• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future • Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded. Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon).

LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS Don’t forget food. If it’s truly impossible to find something late in the season and a gift card feels too impersonal, give the gift of food. Adult recipients also can be gifted a bottle of wine or another spirit that can be enjoyed during a holiday meal. Shoppers skilled in the kitchen can whip up a homemade treat, while those without such talents can give a store-bought delicacy or even a subscription to a monthly food club or service.

Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants. Employee Incentives Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work. Additional Findings • When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing. • 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. M any hom e building codes now require outlets w ith ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathroom s and other room s exposed to m oisture. Som e older hom es m ay not even have three-pronged outlets, so this w ill necessitate an update as w ell.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME If your home has a chimney, chances are you have not used it since last winter. During that time, the chimney has likely accumulated some dirt and grime, and may even have served as home to some uninvited critters. As the season for fireside chats approaches, have your chimney serviced by a professional so it’s ready for use and you are not greeted by some unwanted guests upon lighting your first fire.

PREPARE YOUR FIREPLACE OR STOVE FOR WINTER Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months.

Seasoned Firewood Log loads available. Also buying standing timber.

LEAF PICKUP SCHEDULE Leaf pickup will begin Thursday, October 19th and run through Friday, December 1st. How To Place Leaves for Pickup Leaves should be placed close to the edge of the road. They should not extend onto the road. Leaves should not be placed in ditches or covering storm sewer drains. Doing this will obstruct the storm drains which will increase the risk of flooding. Leaves should be in a long row no farther off the road than 8 feet. Do not mix branches of foreign objects with the leaves. This can cause damage to the machine that picks up the leaves. Refer to branch pickup for branches.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Basic Training DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You often mention that owners should spend time with their dogs in basic obedience training. What are “the basics” exactly? -- Ferris T., Huntington, N.Y. A: While the specifics of basic obedience training for dogs are better detailed through books or by professional trainers, I can list these training requirements here. • Housetraining: The most basic and most important to you and your dog’s peace of mind. Teaching a new dog where and when to eliminate, and training yourself to keep a proper schedule, is a crucial initial step. • Heel: Your dog should walk calmly alongside you, and not struggle against the leash, pull you down the street or chase after birds, cars or other dogs. • Sit: A well-trained dog will sit on command. When training on the leash, have the dog sit on your left side. • Down: The dog should lie down (on his belly, paws forward) on command. • Stay: In the “sit” or “down” position, the dog should not move until you release him with a verbal command. • Come: At your command, the dog should come to you, or respond to further directional commands (such as tugging the leash right or left to signal a turn).

That’s essentially it: five basic commands and housetraining. It doesn’t sound like much, but teaching a dog of any age these skills will take at least several weeks, if not months. And they must be taught correctly: no hitting or yelling, maintaining dominance over the dog. Training books provide many more details on effective ways to do this, while a professional trainer can demonstrate additional effective techniques to ease the basic training process. Remember that basic obedience training doesn’t stop once these skills have been learned. Dogs need regular reinforcement, even if it’s just a five-minute review during their daily walks.

Paget’s Disease Causes Arthritis, Pain, Deformities and More

diagnosed with Paget’s disease. I would like to know more about it; this is the first time I have ever heard of it. I would like to know the treatments and how much damage affects the bones. He is 76, had prostate cancer and underwent radiation treatment. -- C.W. ANSWER: Paget’s disease of the bone is a common disease in people of European ancestry, with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 3%, although it remains undiagnosed in many. The cause of the disease appears to be a defect in bone reabsorption by the osteoclast, a specialized cell that normally helps maintain bone health. Paget’s disease is not a cancer. It is normally diagnosed over the age of 55. Most cases of Paget’s disease are asymptomatic; however, without treatment, some people will develop arthritis, pain, deformities and fractures. The bone deformities may lead to nerve compression and, in the case of the tiny bones in the ear, hearing loss. X-rays and a high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) blood test are suggestive of the diagnosis. A bone scan is recommended to see the extent of damage from the disease. Fortunately, highly effective treatments are available. Bisphosphonate drugs, the same drugs that are used to treat many people with osteoporosis, are very effective. A single treatment with zoledronic acid is effective at stopping (not reversing) the progression of the disease, and fewer than 20% of people will need a second dose. Diagnosing and treating early are ideal. I don’t think his prostate cancer or radiation treatment has anything to do with his diagnosis of Paget’s. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW?

According to the ASPCA, the number of dogs and cats euthanized in United States animal shelters has declined significantly since 2011. The ASPCA reports that approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. That number is high, but it marks an improvement over 2011, when roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats were euthanized. The ASPCA credits part of this decline in euthanizations to an increase in animal adoptions and greater success at returning stray animals to their owners. Recent data indicates that roughly 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year, with a 50/50 split between dogs and cats. A greater emphasis on adoption can help reduce euthanization statistics even further.

Annual Corporation Meeting Corporation Board Meeting 11/21/2023 After the Legion Meeting

American Legion Harrison Lee Post 283 Livonia Center All members please attend. DID YOU KNOW? As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT LAWYER Contact your local bar association. According to the ABA®, bar associations in most communities will make referrals according to specific areas of law. This can ensure people without much or any experience hiring lawyers find one with the right experience and practice concentration. Local referral services also may help, and the ABA® notes that many, though not all, have competency requirements for lawyers who wish to be referred. When speaking with a referral service, ask if they have such requirements in place and how frequently they reevaluate lawyers they refer.

NaNoWriMo: Take a Month to Ignore Self-Doubt and Let Your Creativity Soar BY SUZIE WELLS

A

s leaves plummet from lofty perches, winds usher in the annual mercury drop and potentially the s-word around here, thousands around Rochester, the region, and the nation aim to write a full novel within the thirty days of November. Hence National Novel Writing Month, affectionately abbreviated NaNoWriMo. According to nanowrimo.org, the month-long initiative encourages people to “novel.” Organizers say, “Yes, we use it as a verb. Yes, we made up that use. Noveling is an act of pure, inspired, messy creation; it forces people to sit up, create, and engage with the ideas they’ve received.” Begun in 1999 as a writing challenge, NaNoWriMo provides community writing challenges, camps, resource collectives, author visit programs, and local initiatives to encourage creative writing across the country. No matter your background, “NaNoWriMo believes in the transformative power of creativity.” In 2022, over 400,000 writers officially participated in the program. While I personally participated in this challenge only once or twice over the years, local teens, Chelsie Wells and Ella Fowler, are set to embark on it for the second year in a row. Avid creative writers who rival the best, they often self-assign goals and challenges, encouraging each other to write despite time constraints of school, family, and extracurriculars. They often get together for “writing sprints” to help motivate each other and have fun creating and encouraging each other’s creativity. The two often read each other’s in-progress writing as well, offering productive feedback as they go. They recently started their own podcast to spread their writing positivity and ideas with the world. Last year, Ella wrote 50,000 words in the NaNoWriMo challenge, which brought her near the end of her novel. She says, “I definitely found myself cramming words in at the end, but it was totally worth it, and I loved the experience.” She says, “Something about writing to complete a big goal alongside so many other authors is very inspiring, and since I’m quite competitive, I love the challenge and find it very motivational.”

ensure you make it to the finish line.” Chelsie admits that it’s the competition that helps her stay inspired to write. “You’re basically competing with yourself, or with your past self, [so] if you’ve been procrastinating writing, NaNoWriMo is a great way to give you that extra boost of motivation.” Chelsie says she tends to write fantasy novels but loves experimenting with other genres. She’s rarely not up for a challenge suggested by her friends and fellow writers. To combat writer’s block, which Chelsie says “is just another excuse” everyone experiences, she recommends writing through the block. “Set a timer for 5-10 minutes and just write. Normally by the end of the 10 minutes you’ve gained some sort of motivation or inspiration and are able to keep writing for longer. Starting is the hardest part. Just start.” Ella agrees that starting to write is most important. “Whenever I have writer’s block, I just write anyway and tell myself that even if it’s garbage, I can rewrite it later. Eventually, I come to a place in my book that I’m highly inspired to write and oftentimes I go back to the places I had writer’s block while writing and rewrite pieces. Either that or I take a slight break for a week or two (not going to lie, a week HAS turned into a month, so I might not recommend this, but...) and I return to writing later. It usually doesn’t help that much, but sometimes I just need a break.” Both young authors suggest “Never stop writing.” Maybe designate a time each day to stop everything and write. Maybe pursue the NaNoWriMo goals of writing 50k words in 30 days. But no matter what, they suggest writing should be fun. Ella says, “Take your time and enjoy writing!” Chelsie adds, “Writing should be fun, and it should be something you look forward to every day.” Good luck to all who participate in this year’s NaNoWriMo!

Chelsie echoes the sentiment, and during last year’s NaNoWriMo, Chelsie wrote 30,000 words to finish drafting 4 Doomed Queens, and aims to write the first 50k words of its sequel, 3 Broken Wings, this November. She says this year she feels more confident writing often, so she has high hopes of meeting her goal. Chelsie is methodical, suggesting to aspiring NaNoWriMo participants to “Try your very best to hit that word count every day.” 50,000 words in 30 days means an average of 1,667 words each day, so she explains, “If you don’t, it’ll all pile up at the end of the month and it’ll seem impossible. Try to stay ahead of the game to

3. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Here’s a Tip

* Mail service is a wonderful thing. Order what you wanand it’s in your mailbox or on your doorstep tomorrow. From efficiency to penny pinching, you can use the mail order to help out in numerous ways. Or, use it to bring a smile to someone’s face: Keep a stack of stamped postcards with you. Jot a note and mail one off whenever the mood strikes. I almost guarantee a great response from the recipient! Who doesn’t love real snail mail? -- JoAnn * To save on prescription costs, ask if your health insurance participates in a mail order service where you can get three months of a drug for a discounted cost. Mine costs less for three months than it does for one month in my local drugstore, and I don’t even have to go pick it up. -- B.W. in Virginia * One of the greatest assets in our communities is the public library, and mine has just added a new service that I’m over the moon about: delivery! I can search the card catalog from home and have the books I want delivered right to my house. It’s so convenient. -- J.H. in Florida

Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

The pinch of inflation has been felt throughout the last year, and that squeeze could feel even tighter as the holiday season draws closer. Though inflation might be beyond consumers’ control, there are still ways to find bargains when holiday shopping this year. • Start comparison shopping early. In addition to the rising cost of living, modern consumers also must contend with supply shortages and shipping delays. Shopping early is a great way to get around those, and it also affords shoppers more time to find great deals. • Shop on consumer holidays. Black Friday used to be the only game in town in regard to holiday bargains. Consumers can still find great deals on Black Friday and also benefit from reduced prices on days such as Cyber Monday. • Attend local holiday bazaars and markets. One of the great things about holiday bazaars and markets is that many of the businesses that set up shop at these events are local. They also tend to sell an array of items, including small items that can easily fit into shoppers’ holiday budgets. • Pool your resources. Another way to get around rising costs this holiday season is to pool your shopping resources with another friend or family member. The cost of a new tablet for a parent can be easier to bear if it’s split with a sibling. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

If you look in your mirror and see multiple vehicles lined up behind you why can’t you at least move a bit to let some by? You may have all the time in the world but others don’t! Headlights From the Other Side New cars have LED headlights. I didn’t choose LEDs; the car came this way. A recent rant complained about being blinded by bright headlights. I am constantly flashed by other cars as though I have my brights on. I have two options to this flashing. One: do nothing and look like a jerk. Two: flash my brights and let them face a much brighter light, thereby demonstrating that what the other driver thought was bright wasn’t even close. The solution for drivers bothered by lights hasn’t changed. If a car is approaching, fix your gaze on the painted line along the shoulder on the right side of your car until the bright lights pass. Staring directly at any headlights and getting angry is a silly move. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR EMPLOYEES Offer non-monetary perks. Many employers show their appreciation through raises or monetary gifts but the funds may not be there in tight economic times. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other perks to explore. For example, reward work done well or special company milestones with a reserved parking spot close to the door, an extra paid day off of work of the employee’s choosing, or early dismissal.
