SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics.

While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. December 12, 2021 Poinsettia plants were prized by the Aztecs, since they produced a vibrant red dye. In the 1600s, poinsettias appeared in print for the first time using their Aztec name,

Cuitlaxochitl, which means “star flower.”

Can you use your design skills to create a festive poinsettia pot? Color in the leaves, which are normally red, any color you’d like and make them as vibrant as typical poinsettias are!

Dan Mulvaney Memorial Scholarship Fund

A time for giving As we approach the holiday season, we are reaching out to see if you would consider making a donation to the Dan Mulvaney Memorial Scholarship Fund. The idea to create a scholarship in Dan’s name came about after so many people inquired as to what they could do after his unexpected death due to a brain aneurysm in April of this year. After much thought and consideration, it was decided a scholarship to benefit a local student would be an ideal way to honor Dan’s legacy. Due to his strong ties to the Conesus community, a scholarship will be awarded each year to a graduating senior from Livonia High School. The recipient will be an individual who has demonstrated leadership in the community through volunteerism and community service, with special consideration given to someone who, like Dan, would have an ear ready to listen and always be ready to lend a helping hand, as well as being skilled in working with their hands. The recipient will be selected by a committee of Dan’s family members and friends and will be awarded during the Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 24, 2022. We hope this will be the first of many scholarships given in Dan’s honor. For contributions by mail, please forward your check payable to The Dan Mulvaney Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Community Bank NA, 23 Commercial Street, Livonia, NY 14487. For acknowledgement purposes, please include a note with your contribution specifying your affiliation with Dan. Thank you for taking the time to consider a donation to this most worthy cause. Dan was truly a special man to so many people for so many different reasons. We hope you will join us in kicking off this scholarship fundraising campaign by contributing your gift today. If you have further questions please feel free to reach out via email at danmulvaney@gvpennysaver.com GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.

ROOFING & SIDING

Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR

Wanted

Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers.

Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys.

Deer Hits, Frame Work, Bumper Repair, Insurance Claims

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage.

“A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.”

658-1265

Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis.

CLAR’S COLLISION 4778 Honeoye Business Park, Honeoye • 585-229-2008 SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

HORNED WORDS

Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Candles will burn more evenly if you refrigerate them for a few hours before lighting. * “My great-nephew and his family came to visit, and his toddler son is quite into opening doors. I had baby-proofed my home, but I did not think about his being able to turn a doorknob. His very smart mother pulled out a sock and slipped it over the doorknob, then secured it with a wide rubber band. Even I was unable to get a good grip on the doorknob after that!” -- V.R. in North Carolina * Surprise guests? Here’s how to quickly clean your living areas: First, clean the toilet, mirror and vanity in the guest bathroom and leave a fresh towel; grab a laundry basket and remove any clutter from the living room and kitchen; put away or clean dirty dishes and wipe down counters in the kitchen; finally, give carpets a quick vacuum. Then maybe light a great-smelling candle and greet your guests! * “Fireplaces are wonderful for heat and ambience, but the ashes! When cleaning up, I spritz the ashes with a rosemary water solution. This keeps them from dusting up and flying all over, and it smells great. My neighbor puts her damp loose-leaf tea in the fireplace for scent.” -- C.W. in Iowa * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- Giselle in New York * Empty spice containers can be used to hold different hardware in the shop or in your toolbox. DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Beware Holiday Foods, Ornaments, Plants DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers of how important it is to keep their pets away from holiday foods. Some foods, like chocolate, can be deadly poisonous to dogs, while rich foods and ingredients like onions or raisins can be dangerous for cats and dogs. -- Jessica in New Jersey DEAR JESSICA: You told them, and thank you! The holiday season, with plenty of parties, family and food, can be hectic for everyone, but it’s important to monitor pets and make sure they’re kept away from potentially harmful items. Many foods, not just chocolate but onions, grapes and raisins, nuts, avocados and other holiday foods can cause house pets great harm. Store them well out of reach, and keep pets out of the kitchen when cooking and away from serving tables. A more extensive list of common foods that can be poisonous to pets is available from the Humane Society of the United States (www. humanesociety.org). Christmas tree ornaments also can potentially be harmful. Cats love knocking down glass ornaments and may accidentally ingest tinsel or other shiny strands. Dogs may gnaw on interesting packages or break into gift boxes of candy or fruit. Even plants need to be kept out of reach: poinsettias, for example, are toxic to cats. To minimize risk, place breakable ornaments higher on the tree and put plants well out of reach. During parties or dinners, place your pets in a separate area of the house with bedding, food and water, and check on them occasionally. (This also is helpful in keeping pets’ stress levels down.) Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Shopping local means giving back to charities in your community. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) conducted a survey last year and found that 75 percent of small business owners donate some portion of their profits — about six percent on average — to charitable organizations each year. Many times, those charities are found right in your community. So every time you shop local, a portion of your dollars may also be donated to a local charity, especially helpful during back-to-school time and the holidays. Tis the Season

GIFT IDEAS FOR LAST-MINUTE SHOPPERS Early bird shoppers may purchase and even wrap gifts before December, but eleventh-hour shoppers may need some help come the holiday season. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list.

THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY Black Friday reinvented The retail industry started using the term “Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and consumers rallied around low-cost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices. Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas.

HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Pricy New Drug Means Higher Part B Premiums

The Medicare Part B monthly premium is going up in 2022 by $21.60, one of the biggest increases ever. The reason for it, they say, is the massive cost of a new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm. Our new premium will be $170 per month. That’s going to be a big bite out of our new Social Security increase, $92 for the average recipient with a benefit of $1,657 per month. Aduhelm will cost $56,000 per year per patient. And that’s only the beginning of the questions and concerns. Whether Medicare is going to pay for the drug is still up in the air because it originally thought the price would be much less, closer to $3,000. Certain other insurers have already stated they won’t cover it unless the cost comes down. As recently as a year ago, U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisers voted against approving the drug as they wondered whether it really works. Clinical trials were inconclusive. Initially the FDA said it was for people with Alzheimer’s, but they’ve already changed their prescribing information and narrowed the criteria for receiving it. Now Aduhelm is for people with very early Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia. It’s no cure, they say, but it slows progression of the disease. Part of its cost is that it has to be given in an IV in a doctor’s office or hospital. Many hospitals, not knowing if they’ll be paid for administering it (that $56,000 is for the drug only) and who should have it, are holding back. Some are even insisting on doing their own in-house research to see if it works. Doctors, not knowing if their patients can get the drug, are often hesitant to prescribe it and raise hopes in patients. Still, we’ll be paying that increased Part B premium in 2022 while they work things out and determine whether Medicare will pay for Aduhelm.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

olidays are perfect excuses to get away from our usual day-to-day routine, spend time with family, eat delicious food, and simply have a good time. What better way to spend them than with the people we love having lots of fun? In the U.S., we might think of traditions like “Elf on a Shelf ” as a modern “unusual tradition.” Around the world, other creative holiday traditions have arisen, and they are very interesting!

1

Have you ever ordered Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) on Christmas instead of a home cooked meal? (If you have, no judgement!) In Japan, this is a tradition. Christmas is not celebrated as much in Japan, however, it can be said that their taste for American food is rather strong. Their choice of celebratory meal each year on December 25th is KFC. How did this come to be, you ask? In 1974, the franchise offered an “American Holiday Meal” that consisted of mashed potatoes, a roll, and fried chicken. This has continued to be a tradition for many Japanese families more than 40 years later. In fact, the fastfood restaurant requests that orders are placed at least two months in advance!

anymore to give to other children as extra presents when Santa visits them. The toys are placed in a special sack waiting for Santa under the Christmas tree. This tradition teaches kids that the best part of this holiday is not receiving gifts, but giving them, especially to the those in need.

5

Design a family coat of arms! This is another tradition tied to a holiday theme: family. Create your own coat of arms displaying your family pride. To do that, draw a shield on a large piece of paper, then decorate it with a picture of your family. Include a pictograph or symbol for your family or last name. This tradition will bring family members closer together, and it can be a fun way to discuss your lineage while showing how proud you are of your roots!

6

It is also traditional in many cultures to celebrate the new year. This year, consider trying the El Ano Viejo tradition popular in several Latin countries. Build a dummy representing the El Ano Viejo, loosely translated as “the old year,” using cardboard. Dress the dummy by drawing clothes on it or better yet by gluing scraps of old clothes from each family member. Write down a list of any of your faults and misfortunes on a piece of paper. At midnight exactly, tear the El Ano Viejo to shreds or throw the shreds into a fire and let them burn. While the El Ano Viejo is being destroyed, read the misfortunes out loud to make them vanish along with the old year. This could be a way to relax your mind about the new year and look forward to it while destroying your previous worries and anxieties.

2

In Spain, there is a holiday tradition that some may find a bit shocking. Instead of an elf on a shelf, families place what they see as the most important holiday figurine, “El Caganer,” on display. This translates roughly to “the defecator,” and this is where it gets interesting. The figurine is a porcelain male soldier with his trousers pulled down. The man is in a squatting position, taking a “number two.” Over the years, this small, indecent statue has placed alongside the Nativity scene. Legend has it that early Spanish farmers would have horrible luck with their crops if they did not do this during the holidays. The tradition still stands today, but the figurines can now hold different faces such as those of celebrities, sports stars, and famous singers.

7

Another way to celebrate and welcome a promising new year is to bang pots and pans on New Year’s Eve right as the clock strikes midnight. The idea behind this unusual tradition is to use the noise to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. This may also provide an opportunity to have fun and welcome the new year together with our families—and with a bang—while starting the new year fresh with optimism!

3

In Oaxaca, Mexico, this unique tradition is held close to the heart, even if others find it strange. It involves a radish, a small, edible root vegetable. During the holiday season, this root vegetable is intricately carved, like the way pumpkins are carved in the United Stated during Halloween. Oaxaca’s annual celebration consists of the sophisticated carving of a radish on the 23rd of December. These gorgeous creations are sold during the holiday season to be used as a center piece for the table on the night of Christmas, which is widely celebrated in Spain as “Navidad.” “Feliz Navidad,” as in the popular Christmas song, translates to “Merry Christmas.”

4

Some holiday traditions are tied to the Christmas spirit rather than a particular culture, such as teaching kids about giving back! Since December holidays are all about giving presents and having a good time with our loved ones, why not teach them the art of giving back? In this Christmas tradition, parents let their kids choose from the toys they own but do not play with

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

“America is a fabulous country! It is the only place where miracles not only happen, but where they happen all the time...” ~ Thomas Clayton Wolfe Most of us were born in this country and have lived here all our lives. We may be forgiven for not comprehending how the rest of the world looks at our country as the land of miracles..... of dreams come true! “Only in America could such things happen” is often heard, and indeed, we are blessed with opportunities which people in other countries never experience. We should never let our miracles grow commonplace..... we should be constantly aware of just how fortunate we are! When death occurs, your first call should be to us. we can advise you as to what must be done and we can handle many of the tasks for you.

Mary (Helsdon) Palmer December 5, 2021

Livonia, NY: At age 81, Bill passed peacefully surrounded by family on December 2, 2021 at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Habilitation. He was born on June 20, 1940 in Cortland, NY to the late Albert and Vada (Dunn) Cole. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, William Franklyn Cole and brothers, Edward Cole & Richard Cole. Survived by children, Matthew (Belinda) Cole of Livonia and Ruth Cole (Marc Girouard) of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Finn, Brigid, and Nora Cole; sister, Shirley Frost; several nieces, nephews, and friends including special friends Mike and Becky Wershay.

Geneseo, NY, at the age of 87, Mary passed away peacefully at her home. She was born in Lyndonville, NY where she lived until her marriage. She than resided in North Tonawanda where she raised her 5 children. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended Charity Bible Church in Scottsville, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Livingston County Hospice Program, 2 Murray Hill, Mt Morris, NY 14510.

Those dearest to William, “Bill” to his close friends, knew his deep devotion to his beloved children, that he was immensely proud of, and his lifelong passion for sports. He was a shining star during high school on Homer Central’s soccer, track, basketball and baseball teams. He continued participating in competitive sports while serving in the Army/Air Force as a Medic and was the MVP of Championship teams playing in military leagues throughout Germany/France tournament play. After his service in the military, his genuine competitive nature continued throughout his collegiate years at Doane College in Nebraska while he worked towards a degree in physical therapy. At Doane, he joined the golf team, playing side-by-side with his close friend of over 50 years, Mike Wershay. As a caring father, he constantly supported his children in their various athletic endeavors, always “showing up” to cheer them on from the sidelines. During his golden years, Bill moved to Casa Grande, Arizona, which let him live in the beautiful sunny “dry heat” climate of the southwest, giving him the opportunity to play golf daily. Throughout his entire life, he was a man of few words with a big caring heart for those he loved. He stood out everywhere he went with his attention to style and debonair attire. His work ethic started at a young age when he worked as a shoe shiner and golf caddy at the Cortland Country Club as a teenager. His tenacity carried forward throughout his life; when he put his mind to something, his determination could overcome the harshest of challenges that life threw at him. He worked tirelessly to provide for his children and help to create a brighter future for them. He liked what he liked and appreciated good food, especially his Coca-Cola classic. He enjoyed oldie but goodies classic music from the 50s-60s, classic western movies and had a good sense of humor.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

Services and burial, with military honors, will be held in the spring at Sampson Veterans Cemetery, Romulus, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill’s memory to the Veteran’s Outreach Center, 447 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620 or online at https:// veteransoutreachcenter.org or the PGA’s First Tee program to build character and instill life-enhancing values through the game of golf at First Tee, PO Box 3055, Ponte Verda Beach, FL 32004 or online at https://firsttee.org/donate. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.

Marie A. Zea (Blood) December 2, 2021 Conesus Lake: At age 65, Marie A. Zea passed on December 2, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born on October 10, 1956, to the late Lauren and Elizabeth (Flansburg) Blood. Survived by siblings, Shirley Dildine of Hornell, Bill Blood of Kansas, and Laurenia (Matthew) Templeton of Livonia; nieces, Ashley Templeton (George Embrey) of Webster and Niki (Zack) Swank of Arkansas; nephew, James (Christine) Dildine of New York, NY; great-niece, Emmaline Dildine; and greatnephew, Parker Dildine; and many friends including dear friend Susan (Tim) Caulkins. Marie enjoyed spending time surrounded by friends and family. All who knew Marie would describe her as a fun loving and genuine person with a fantastic sense of humor. Marie was a strong advocate of paying it forward and making sure her loved ones were taken care of. Marie had a passion for traveling and often enjoyed picking up her nieces and taking them on “adventure days.” Marie found solitude at her home on the lake where she often hosted gatherings for friends and family. Marie retired from Monroe #1 BOCES where she worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist for many years. Family and friends may call on Monday, December 13th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Marie’s Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, December 14th at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Why Do Older Folks Have Balance Issues?

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

---

585.286.3664

DEAR DR. ROACH: Apparently, it is common for older people to have balance issues. Do these balance problems usually stem more from muscular issues or inner ear issues? -- E.M. ANSWER: It is often a combination of issues that lead to balance problems in older adults. Inner ear problems, where the organs of balance are located, are a major cause. However, balance problems are exacerbated by muscle weakness, vision problems, arthritis and medications, to name a few common ones. The body has many safeguards to keep us from falling. If the balance system can’t tell us our exact position in space, our eyes can, and the neurological system uses fine muscle control to keep us upright and safe. We can often do well even with one system not working properly. When multiple systems are affected, falls are more common. Improving balance and reducing fall risk often involves multiple interventions. One is working on balance directly. This can be achieved with home exercises; group exercises, like tai chi and yoga, which have the added advantage of increasing muscle control; or with a skilled therapist such as physical or occupational therapy. Making sure vision is as good as possible and staying on top of joint, muscle and neurological conditions will help reduce fall risk. Medications are so often the source of balance and fall problems that many medical practices (including mine) review medications at every visit to look for errors, medicines that have combined toxicities, medicines that are less safe in older adults and any medicines that might safely be discontinued.

S E V RA Renewed faith I want to thank the office manager, Lori, for going above and beyond the call of duty for me, a customer. I called up concerning an item I wanted picked up. The representative I was speaking to wasn't the friendliest representative that I had spoken to at [local company]. I will not name her, but she just had a way about her when it came to speaking to a customer. She did not display any kindness for my situation, and I finally asked to speak with a supervisor. I explained my predicament. Lori was genuinely concerned, so much so that she put an order in to have the item picked up as early as the next day. Wow! That is service for you! The representative who I had spoken to earlier said that they wouldn't even pick the item up at all. Thanks, Lori! Great work! I recently met Jose Ayala. He drove from Rochester to Geneseo to pick up my old refrigerator. He uses old appliances to teach young people how to repair them. Thanks for doing great work with young people, Jose! Unbelievable! I still cannot believe that a total stranger paid for my week’s worth of groceries at Honeoye Falls Marketplace! She was ahead of me and had checked out, but had heard me tell the cashier that I would appreciate it if she could put the filled grocery bags into the shopping cart as I had had a really rotten week and could not lift. This kind-hearted stranger heard me say this and had somehow indicted to the cashier that she would pay for my groceries. When the total came up, both she and the cashier told me that the groceries had been paid for. I was so taken off guard. I know I did assure her that I would “pay this kindness forward,” and I certainly will. I still get goosebumps when I think of this woman’s generosity!

Foreign Aid The USA sends ten million dollars in foreign aid to Israel every day. Think of what ten million dollars a day could do for places in America. This generous giving should be stopped and the ten million per day should be given to towns in the USA. Slow down! You are moronic to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and you slamming on the breaks, and for what? To get home and turn on your tv? You're a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity! Global Warming To the person denying global warming: Do you think the world is lying to you? Yes, we've been talking about it for years because it's a gradual thing; it's not going to happen overnight. We've been warned for years. We can now see it happening. If this isn't enough for you to open up your mind and make sense of this, nothing will. Aug 30, 2021: It was the first time on record, and it was only the fourth time that temperatures there—an ice-capped expanse two miles above sea level, located in the very center of the Arctic island's interior—had risen above freezing. That’s a warning! Are you not aware that there are more wildfires, and they're burning hotter and longer? This is because there's more drought. Can you explain what's happening to our coral reefs? Why are they bleaching out? I don't have enough room here to tell you everything you need to be told. Please educate yourself.

Cheers to the Broadway Theatre League Thanks for bringing another world class musical to Rochester. I attended the Simon & Garfunkel show last Tuesday evening and it was sensational. Their music and lyrics are timeless, and the performers showed such respect to the famous duo with precision and aplomb. Thanks once again for providing such an enjoyable evening!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

Automotive Mechanic Must have experience, own quality tools & have a good work ethic.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty.
