A Visit from St. Nicholas BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

“Yuletide” celebrates the birth of the Sun and also celebrates the “Mother” at the height of her “Greatness.” Pagans celebrate Yuletide in many ways; most will decorate a “Yuletide” tree, keep it in their homes until most of the leaves fall off, then burn the Yule log. In ancient Rome, the winter solstice was celebrated at the Feast of Saturnalia to honor Saturn, the god of agricultural bounty.
Can you draw the Winter Solstice Night Sky and Stonehenge? Stonehenge is one of the major structures associated with the Solstice, the other two being Newgrange and Maeshowe. Make sure to add lots of snowflakes and stars to showcase the night sky. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Hanks Handy Man WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.

Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Happens on the Sly The annual Christmas dinner at the senior center was a wonderful event, mostly because it didn’t happen at all. The original plan -- seniors sitting in a cold parking lot outside the center to eat food that would stay hot for maybe one minute -- was ditched by means of a petition to board members. That petition mentioned the absolute folly of the whole outdoor dining idea. The board’s second plan was to host the dinner indoors, but for only one-third the number of guests, with clear Plexiglas shields on the tables, which would interfere with conversation. There was a snap, an awakening, an audible collective click -- and the seniors said NO. The former recreation-center supervisor, who had quit after too many snarling meetings about yoga classes masked versus unmasked, was brought back to open the rec center. He’d fled to his cabin in the woods, tossing the keys to others, to sit out the insanity, at which point the town changed the locks. Once brought back, he quickly jimmied open the rec center door and installed a new lock, smiling the whole time. Organizers came together in secret with not a word said to senior-center board members (or the town council). Tables and chairs were borrowed. One of the town’s finer restaurants (the owner himself a senior) was coaxed into providing finger foods and drinks and two bartenders. A half dozen seniors who were in a band years ago regrouped to provide the music and play songs we actually knew. The annual Christmas dinner turned dance party was a major hit, and just what we needed after this long pandemic lockdown. We ate and we mingled and we drank and we laughed and we danced. And long after what should have been bedtime for most of us, we were still there dancing. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Visiting Yap Dog Ruins Holidays DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sisterin-law insists on bringing her yappy, ill-tempered lap dog, “Mitsi,” to our house every Christmas through New Year’s. Mitsi gets along with no one but her owner, frightens our two cats and barks at everyone in the house during dinner, nonstop. I love having my brother and his wife over, but Mitsi is making things hellish. How can I politely ask her to leave Mitsi in a kennel during visits? -- Barked Out in Birmingham DEAR BARKED OUT: I don’t know that there’s a way to tell your sisterin-law to leave her dog at home that would be taken well. Mitsi clearly is a full member of their family and travels with her. Can a compromise be reached instead? Ask her if Mitsi can be placed in a separate room during mealtimes while they are visiting. She’ll probably still bark, but at least it won’t be right in your ear. You also need to discuss how Mitsi is stressing out the cats. Sometimes people think it’s funny when a visiting dog chases the family pets around, but it’s not fun for those pets. It’s like having a schoolyard bully walk right into your home. Try to keep the discussion civil. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what level of compromise to ask for in order to keep peace in your house, and you’ll have to be firm. Your sister-in-law takes her relationship with her dog seriously; she should respect your concerns as well. That discussion probably won’t be comfortable, but if Mitsi’s barking and bullying are making the holidays a living hell, you need to speak up. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend was given a test to see how long food stayed in her stomach after eating. She was told that it stayed only a short time before continuing its journey, a much shorter time than the average person. This was given as a reason for her obesity, that she experienced hunger sooner than most people. Does this really happen, and is there a way for her to manage it so that she can lose weight? -- G.J. ANSWER: A gastric emptying study is usually used to look for delayed gastric emptying, also called gastroparesis. It can be the result of several different types of nerve diseases, but especially diabetes. An abnormally rapid gastric emptying is also called dumping syndrome, and is often a problem after some types of gastric bypass surgeries. I did find a paper from the 1980s suggesting that obese people have shorter gastric emptying times. This was confirmed in a trial from 2015 looking at the diabetes drug exenatide (Byetta), which is sometimes used to help people lose weight, even if they do not have diabetes. Interestingly, exenatide was more likely to cause people to lose weight if they had faster gastric emptying times. I do not mean to suggest that fast gastric emptying is the only reason for your friend’s (or anyone else’s) weight problems. Obesity is a complex problem with no single cause or solution in most people. I am glad you wrote. I did not know about this research before, and it may be worth it for your friend to discuss a trial of exenatide with her doctor.
DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan
Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Anderson and Holden Receive 2021 Albert W. Hawk Award for Distinguished School Board Service BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON
E
ach year, the Genesee Valley School Board Association (GVSBA) presents the Albert W. Hawk Award for Distinguished School Board Service to a current or former Board of Education member who has displayed outstanding contributions to public education and children in their community. This award reflects their tireless efforts to improve and enhance public education and the lives that they impact daily through school board service. The award is named for Albert W. Hawk, a longtime advocate for rural schools, and a member of both the Dansville Central Schools and the Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education. Hawk also chaired many state and national school board committees and served as President of the New York State School Boards Association. Hawk’s legacy and his support for public education is visible to this day. His service has greatly inspired others. This year the Board of Directors of the GVSBA has named Timothy Anderson and Mary Ann Holden as the recipients of the 2021 award. Anderson and Holden are true examples of service and dedication to their communities. Anderson served on the Board of Education for the CaledoniaMumford Central School District for 12 years. First elected in 2009, he was an outstanding advocate for his school, community, and students. Anderson was also a member of the Town of Caledonia Board, the Recreation Committee, and an umpire for youth sports, and was the statistician for the Caledonia-Mumford/ByronBergen Football and Girls Basketball Programs. A well-respected umpire, Anderson was inducted into the Genesee Valley Umpires Association Hall of Fame in 2020. He was also a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus which served the St. Martin De Porres Parish. Timothy Anderson Often seen at sporting events, awards ceremonies and theatrical performances, Anderson showed that he cared deeply about the students and staff in his school and community. He also served on many school board committees and attended many area meetings and events.

Sadly, after a courageous battle with cancer, Anderson passed away on April 4, 2021. His impact on the community he served has been greatly missed. Holden has been a tireless, dedicated Dansville citizen for many years as she has served on many community boards. Holden has been on the Dansville School Board since 2002 and for the past 16 years, she’s served as President. She is also a past Genesee Valley BOCES Board of Education Member. Her commitment to public education has led her to be involved in many board committees as well as GVSBA Programs. Holden’s expertise in district finances has led to the fiscal security of Dansville Mary Ann Holden Central Schools, as well as, the passage of a $9.6 million school budget and an $8.2 million capital project less than one year apart. Ms. Holden is a Trustee of the Dansville Public Library. She sits on the local Planning Board and is an active member of the Holy Family Catholic Community. A solid supporter of the families and children in Dansville, Holden has shown that she is always ready, willing, and able to make tough decisions for her community. Her leadership has provided a solid foundation for the district, proving that she is indeed a wellrespected, well-spoken and integral part of the total Dansville community. The Genesee Valley School Board Association represents 22 Boards of Education within the Genesee Valley BOCES region.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Movie tickets: The cost of going to the movies has skyrocketed in recent years, as today’s theaters now offer an array of amenities and, thanks to bigger screens and better technology, a better viewing experience than the theaters the over-50 crowd grew up visiting. While film lovers may need to wait until they turn 60 to cash in on discount movie tickets, many chain movie theaters offer discounted tickets to older patrons.

* Save the peel on oranges and grapefruits. You can toss them on a fire for a nice smell. * Fold and snip a coffee filter into a paper snowflake. Lay over an iced cookie or cake to sift a sugar design on top. * “When planning to visit my hometown for the holidays, I set aside a few hours to take the kids to the park or a nice playground. I message all my old friends and classmates with kids (Facebook is great for this) a few weeks ahead of time and let them know when I’ll be there. It’s great to catch up while the kids play, and even if no one shows up, we still have a fun break.” -- F.L. in California * “When there are big family jobs to be done (like getting ready for the holidays), we write all the tasks down on slips of paper and put them in a hat. We take turns choosing tasks until all the paper is divvied out. Sometimes we trade, but we all get a fair chore list.” -V.O. in Oregon * Make a holiday cheese ball simply: Combine a package of cream cheese with a cup of finely shredded cheese (your choice) and 1/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. Form into a ball, roll in coating of your choice (dried fruit pieces, chopped nuts, spices, etc.) and chill. Wrap in a pretty cellophane bag and bring with pita chips, crackers or pretzels as a hostess gift. * “Wax drippings from candles can be scraped off of most hard surfaces with the side of a credit card.” -- T.E. in Kansas

Raymond Charles Leonard December 11, 2021 AVON NY- Passed away on December 11, 2021 at age 82. Raymond, or “Spike” as he was lovingly known to family and close friends, was born on January 17, 1939 to William Stanley Leonard and Gladys Atkinson-Huxley Leonard of Penn Yan, NY. Spike spent his childhood on the shore of Keuka Lake at his family’s home on the East Bluff. He met his wife and best friend of 60 years, Sally Moore Leonard, while she was attending Keuka College. Sally convinced him they should both become school teachers and spend their life working side by side. They attended Geneseo State University together, where they earned their teaching degrees and where Spike served as founding president of his fraternity Sigma Tau Psi. As a couple and team, they were inseparable. They made their home in Avon, NY, where for 35 years they were sixth-grade team teachers, touching thousands of lives. Those years teaching together were some of the most rewarding of their lives. At Avon Middle School they were innovators, starting and leading programs in model rocket building, etiquette, calligraphy, photography and film processing--and an annual sixth grade trip to Boston for whale watching. To this day, former students remark with joy and pride: “ìI had Mr. and Mrs. Leonard for sixth grade.” Spike’s influence extended beyond the classroom. For 18 years, he coached diving. When asked to be Avon’s diving coach, with no prior knowledge or experience in diving, Spike taught himself all the basics and attended coaching clinics to gain a deeper knowledge of the sport. He went on to coach high school and collegiate levels at both Avon and SUNY Geneseo. During his tenure, he coached many sectional champions, state qualifiers, and SUNYAC champions. Being on and near the water was a mutual love for the couple, as both Spike and Sally had spent their youths on the shores of Keuka and Ontario. In 1976 they purchased a summer home at Oak Orchard on Lake Ontario, where they shared many happy summers boating and sailing competitively at the Oak Orchard Yacht Club. A self-taught sailor and voracious learner, Spike achieved remarkable success in yacht racing, competing in regattas across Lake Ontario and holding positions as the Yacht Club’s Commodore and Fleet Captain. and friends as crew, he was tactician, helmsman, teacher, father, and grandfather aboard his many sailboats named Foxfire, Emeraude, Static, Encore and Spontaneous. In the summer of 2021, despite failing health, he helmed his boat Spontaneous to finish first place in his fleet, capping a legendary sailing career. Sailing was just one of many passions. Spike’s love for antique motorcycles, cars, and boats, was a love he shared with his father-inlaw and great friend Allen Moore. The two spent many wonderful years traveling to auto shows and working on restoration projects in Allen’s garage in Albion, NY. Spike went on to restore antique mahogany runabouts, 1930s Indian motorcycles, and several classic cars. It’s a love he passed down to his children and grandchildren, who will carry on the legacy of these two remarkable patriarchs. To his family, Spike was the go-to expert on virtually everything and was always turning ideas into action. There was no project or plan he couldn’t or wouldn’t tackle. He was a constant learner and intrepid adventurer. After retiring from teaching, he set his sights on flying and earned his pilot license. In true form, he bought a kit airplane, which he built in his barn, and spent many hours flying around the region. His can-do attitude continues to inspire his family and all those who knew him. To his nine grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, he is known only as “Pa”. He would speak with love and pride whenever sharing one of their individual accomplishments with people. These nine grandchildren, ranging from eighth grade to young adults, possess many of the traits and much of the knowledge handed down to them by a man who in their hearts will always be immortal. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Sally (Moore) Leonard; his children Kyle ( Jenny), Dana ( Jennifer), Darren (Kristin) Leonard, and Natalie (Brian) McCue; his sister Elaine Hawkes; his grandchildren Allison, Quinn, Emily, Shea, Declan, Avery, Finnegan, Leila, and Caden; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his brother William Leonard. Services and interment were held at the convenience of the family. Private interment at Mt. Albion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Avon Swimming and Diving Team at Avon Athletic Club c/o Avon Central School 191 Clinton Street, Avon, NY 14414. THE PERFECT TREE!

KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Cut pre-cut trees before leaving the lot. Pre-cut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they’ll need to make it through the season when they get home.
Closed for the Season We would like to thank all of our great customers for an outstanding season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Be careful, little eyes I love President Trump. You know what I hate? All the Biden flags and signs with FOUL language on them. I have a 9-yearold son and 6-year-old daughter who we are raising to be America-loving patriots. But when my daughter questions the meaning of the words on these flags, my blood boils. You do no service to our party or our innocent kids. You look uncouth and, yes, ignorant. Being a mom of kids in this insane world is hard enough without my own party letting me down. Please think of the little kids. Put yourself in the shoes of parents trying to protect innocence and decency.
S E V RA CMBB Raiders Coming from a “rival” school, I’ve just got to say how nice the people at the Football game in October were. They have an awesome facility. Lots of kids running around having fun and even the crew working in concessions were great. I’ve been to many schools we were playing against, and this one by far was the friendliest. You should be proud of your school and community.
Foreign aid correction To the person ranting about foreign aid to Israel at $10 million a day, your information is incorrect. The correct amount is approximately $3 million. I agree, still a lot of money, but my point is that if you are going to rant, please have your information correct.
Above & beyond The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank Dr. Ken Bedell and his staff at the Lima Veterinary Center for their outstanding service to us. He and his staff have gone above and beyond in their dealings with us. Whether it’s been dealing with an emergency or fitting in one more cat or kitten into their schedule, they are always friendly and willing to work with us for the betterment of Livingston County cats. We would not be able to do what we do without them, and we appreciate them tremendously.
Almost true The person who was lecturing on global warming started out okay, but then made the same mistake common to all the global warming believers including AOC and began blaming weather on global warming which meteorologists will tell you is not the case. They will know that the earth often goes through periods of temperature fluctuation. Previous to 50 years ago, how would we know if a polar cap melted? CA wildfires are the result of not doing proper forest management. Unlike global warming doomsayers, I am open to listening to ALL the science. We should work on things that are proven to cause global warming but not at the expense of our standard of living. Trust American ingenuity. Study carbon trapping instead of getting rid of gasoline engines with no real plan to replace them. Electric cars? CA’s power grid can’t meet the demands of their electric needs now, so how will they be able to charge the 14,894,912 cars currently registered in that state? Together we can find the answers! Pickup Spaces Why do stores place their pickup spaces as close to the store as possible? One [local store] in [local town] eliminated some handicap spots to install pickup spaces. If you are having your items delivered to your car, does it matter that the pickup spaces are close to the store? The pickup area could be at the back of the lot, and it wouldn’t matter to the customer. It is unfair to shoppers who need handicap spaces to have them moved so that people who stay in their cars can wait closer to the store.

IMPROVE OVERALL ENDURANCE Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you’re a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. Many athletes find pushing their bodies past certain boundaries to be empowering. Letting complacency set in is easy, but finding the motivation to press on and push ahead takes mental determination.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.
