CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES
Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

Girl Scouts Rock!
A BIG shout out to the local Girl Scouts. I work at Temple Hill Cemetery and had worked a couple weeks blowing and lining up leaves. Then one day about 20 Scouts came by and did an amazing job of collecting leaves and hoisting them into the big town dump trucks. These ladies were like a swarm of bees! All business and nonstop high speed action. I was impressed and proud of our younger generation of women! Thank you for your service.
Shout Out for Dollar General in Retsof, NY
I ran in to Dollar General in Retsof on 11/19 to pick up a few items and had that dreaded "chip malfunction" on my credit card! I asked the clerk if she could cancel transaction so I could run to my car to see if I had cash. The guy behind me said, “Don't cancel, I don't mind waiting.” which was very nice! So I hurried out and returned very quickly to pay. The clerk handed me my bag and said “you’re good to go!” Of course I was amazed, it was the cashier who paid for my purchase, would not accept my money and said “Happy Holidays!” I was so surprised I didn't even say "I will pay it forward" to another unsuspecting person. Thank you for your generosity and making my day! #thebestdollargeneral
Thank you, Marc Mingoia!
Thanks to the great generosity of Marc Mingoia with the Howard Hanna Pittsford office. We all devoured this pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving specially delivered by Phillip Lane who actually delivered 2 of them in person to us for my grandson to have at his dinner. After a tough year and a half because of the loss of his dad, we appreciated the generosity. We were greatly surprised with the pies and we appreciate the goodness that still comes around in this world. The pies were deliciously made from Special Touch Bakery at 1999 Mt. Reed Boulevard. Making it even more special was it was my birthday! God bless everyone.
Cats
On a daily basis, I see responsible dog owners walk in our neighborhood. They keep their dogs on leashes. They clean after them. They license them. On a daily basis, I see cats, both feral and peoples’ pets, wander wherever they please. They are unlicensed. No one cleans up after them when they come into our yards to do their business. They are free to multiply unchecked. Why is it that cat owners do not have to follow the same rules as dog owners? Why do people continue to feed the feral cats? Wouldn’t it be better to take them into your homes? You could feed them, keep them warm, and have them spayed.
A Roof!
A roof! A pretty simple solution for the Bills stadium, especially as they plan for a new billion dollar arena that we will be partly paying for. The Bills/Browns game being moved to Detroit (Ford stadium complete with a roof.) robs Buffalo and Orchard Park of some significant revenue to boot. It’s certainly not too late to consider a roof for the Bills and for those fans who think real football is played in whatever Mother Nature throws at us, I’m sure given the choice, you’d rather be out of the elements and enjoy an NFL game that showcases talent on the field without weather distractions. And, as happy as we all are now that the Bills are in the conversation of elite status in professional football, there wouldn’t be as much pressure that they remain there if their fans could easily enjoy a football game inside.
Thanksgiving Heartbreak
To my neighbor who put a food pantry Thanksgiving food box into this morning’s trash, your wastefulness has broken my heart. I don’t know your circumstance, but I do know that there’s a Little Food Pantry just around the corner. That’s where I’ll be taking the 2 cans of green beans, 2 boxes of stuffing mix, 1 box of cornbread mix, 1 jar of apple sauce, 1 bottle of pancake syrup, 1 butternut squash, and 1 bag of potatoes, all unopened and untouched. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) conducted a survey last year and found that 75 percent of small business owners donate some portion of their profits — about six percent on average — to charitable organizations each year. Many times, those charities are found right in your community. So every time you shop local, a portion of your dollars may also be donated to a local charity, especially helpful during back-to-school time and the holidays.

DID YOU KNOW?
Exerciseisagreatwaytomaintain a healthy mind and body. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose weight or build muscle. Too often, however, men and women get stuck in an exercise rut, following the same exercise routine week after week. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s necessary to change an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason why many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few weeks.Just when you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! With repetition, the body adapts and grows accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose weight. Changing your workout forces your body to work harder, producing better results. If you exercise with a trainer, discuss ways to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Increased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your workoutsmaydothetrick.

PEOPLE TO TIP AND GIFT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Are you making a list and checking it twice? If so, don’t forget to add a few extra people to that list who are worthy of a gift this holiday season. Certainly friends and family are in mind for presents, but what about the service providers in your life?
After a challenging year, people in the service industry might benefit from a holiday boost this year more than ever. Here’s who you may want to spread some cheer to this holiday season.
Hairdressers and nail techs: It takes a lot of effort to look one’s best, and these individuals help people put their best selves forward. Consider tipping the amount you would normally spend on one visit. If you get your hair or nails done frequently and consider this person a friend, opt for a gift instead, such as a gift card to a nice restaurant or a pampering service for him or her.
Babysitter or caregiver: This person is likely close with the family and may be deserving of more than a tip. Pick an age-appropriate gift you know this person will love. What about a coveted pair of Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or headphones? A gift card to a store you know this person frequents also can be fitting, or a year-long subscription to a streaming music or movie service.
Landscapers: If the same person or crew services the lawn most of the time, atipof $20eachisanappropriate amount.
Teachers: Class parents may take up a collection for the teacher and offer one class gift. If your student is educated by multiple teachers and the school staff is top-notch, consider stocking the staff lounge with snacks and beverages or cater a lunch.
Mail carrier: The mail is delivered six days of the week in any and all weather. Treat your mail carrier to a nice gift, but stick to the rules of the U.S.Postal Service.Mail carriers are not allowed to accept cash, checks or gift cards that can be used like credit cards. Stick to a gift of no more than $25.
Cleaning person: You rely on this person to keep your home tidy and clean. He or she is deserving of the cost of one visit, according to Roseanne Thomas, author of “Excuse Me: The Survival Guide to Modern Business Etiquette.”
Individuals can use their discretion concerning service providers in their lives who may be worthy of some extra cheer this holiday season.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES
Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees.
Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight.
While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight.
Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosingplantsforanexistinglandscape,it’simportanttoassessthelevel of shade or sun the plants will receive.
Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs.
Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS WINTER
Many people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt with once inside a home. However, the best pest control is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place.Rodents, the most common winter pests, invade nearly 21 millionU.S.homeseachwinter.
Despitealltheproperprecautions, ifrodentsstillfindtheirwayinside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitchen cabinets, along walls, on top of wall studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and tracks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents will also sometimes reveal themselves through scurryingsounds.

SIMPLE WAYS TO TRIM YOUR ENERGY BILL THIS WINTER
Lower the water heater temperature. Speaking of water heaters, changing their temperature is another simple way to lower utility costs during the winter. According to Energy.gov, homeowners can save between $12 and $30 for each 10° F reduction in water heater temperature. Many manufacturers set water heaters at 140° F,but setting the heater to 120° F can lead to considerable cost savings without sacrificing comfort. An added and cost-effective benefit to lowering water heater temperature is that a lower temperature slows mineral buildup and corrosion in water heaters and pipes, reducing the likelihood of costlyrepairswhile extending the life of the water heater.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime
A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

RESCUED TREASURES –
Giving Furry Friends the Gift of Love
BY JODY GREER
The season of giving is upon us, and for many neglected and abandoned animals, there is no greater gi than that of a safe, loving home with a forever family. Local rescue shelters are exceeding capacity and rely heavily on community engagement to aid with supplying toys, food, and many other essen al supplies. Adop ng a pet from a local shelter is not only giving back to your community, but saving the life of an animal in need.

Rescued Treasures Pet Adop ons in Rochester is a network of over 100 fosters and volunteers. Their passion is rescuing abandoned and homeless pets. A non-profit, their caring, compassion, and desire to serve comes straight from the heart.
Avon na ve Jennifer Evere is a Rescued Treasures six-year rescue veteran. Using her wealth of knowledge, she educates fosters, prospec ve pet owners, and store volunteers. Balancing a fullme job and a busy schedule, Evere is available for guidance a er hours and on weekends.
Fierce dedica on like Evere ’s is not uncommon among Rescued Treasures volunteers who are driven to care for the well-being of our most vulnerable animal popula ons. Sadly, it’s a common mispercep on that shelter animals suffer behavioral problems. In reality, many of them were abandoned by pet owners who could no longer financially care for them, moved out of the area, or passed away.
One of the best ways to help is to foster. Rescued Treasures’ adoptable pets are at PetSmart via their loca ons in Greece and Baytown Plaza, Webster. The rescue has also opened its new Pawsi ve Cat Café on East Avenue in Rochester.
Evere con nues to support Rescued Treasures for a reason. “It’s clear they always want to do right by the animal,” she said. Like many, Evere feels rewarded by the drama c progress she has seen in shelter pets.
“One of my favorite ones was a li le black cat named Willow,” she recalled. “She had a li er, and she was fiercely protec ve of them. Although she didn’t seem to be feral, she wanted no part of anything with humans.”
Evere ’s solu on? Pa ence. “I just gave her me to come out of her shell,” she explained. “She was at my house for a year and three months. It took her that long to come out of any trauma. A wonderful couple adopted her. Her story is a testament.”
Fostering or adop ng a shelter pet means not only that you’ll save its life, but also the life of another animal that can then be taken in. Can’t adopt or foster? There are s ll many ways you can support your local animal shelter. Take a cue from our 12 Days of Christmas Pet Shelter Wishlist!

KEEP YOUR TREE FRESH THIS CHRISTMAS Buy a freshly cut tree. Whenever possible, celebrants should cut their own trees. This ensures that the tree they bring home is fresh, increasing the chances it will remain so throughout the season. If it’s not possible to cut your own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON

Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations.Inthesixteenthcentury, devoutChristiansbroughtdecorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky.
While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Warning Signs A Tire Is About To Go Flat
Tires often produce warning signs that a flat or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect their tires for the following signs.
• Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may differ, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.
• Worn tread: Employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.
• Low pressure: Make sure their tires are at the manufacturerrecommended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout.
• Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.
• Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical
like bulges or cuts, and such signs
blowout is just around the corner.

Workout Goals for 2023?
We love our new exercise coach. is is the young student who used us as guinea pigs for a college class project, graduated and has now been hired by the senior center as our permanent workout guru. It’s only been a month, and already we want to make him Employee of the Year.
Somehow he managed to convince the town to spend large dollars to out t a space in the rec center dedicated to workout equipment for seniors. But we haven’t just been turned loose with all that fancy new gear. Coach has required that we all have a personal session with him wherein he will instruct us on each machine and ll out our personal goal sheet with the weights and repetitions for each one. Periodically he will stalk through the room, instruct on posture, scrutinize someone’s goal sheet and ensure the machine’s weight is set correctly.
e bonus for us is that the cost per month is less than one-quarter the amount charged by the regular gyms in our area.
Is a gym workout in your plans for 2023? While you might not be lucky enough to have a personal coach and a brand-new dedicated-for-seniors exercise room at your rec center, you still might be able to join a gym near you.
Do you qualify for a low-cost SilverSneakers tness membership through your Medicare advantage or supplemental plan? Many plans have this bene t (standard Medicare does not), and over 17,000 gyms across the country participate.
If you nd a local gym (don’t forget about the YMCA), ask whether a tness expert will show you how each machine works and to generate an exercise plan for you. It’s o en included in the membership.
One bonus to signing up for a gym membership at this time of year is that gyms frequently o er discounts for the new year.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Use silicone caulk to make nonskid beads on the bottom of your pet dishes. They will stay in one place instead of getting scooted all around the kitchen.
* Need a quick iron job but don’t have the time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that’s wrinkled. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out and smell great to boot!
* While we’re on ironing tips, here’s a great one from T.C. in Alabama: “If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron’s face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming.”
* “When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you will insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull it away to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail.” -- W.L. in Oregon
* When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet.
* If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is intended to be heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Decade-Long High Lymphocyte Count Isn’t a Cause for Concern
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female and almost 75 years old. My vital signs are always normal, and I am active, but slightly overweight. I get quarterly blood draws, and every reading is in the normal range except for the lymphocytes. That count is higher, just outside the normal range (the lab’s range is 850 to 3,900 cells/uL, and my absolute lymphocytes are 4,377 cells/uL). This has occurred in the blood draws from the last two or three years, with the exception of one that was back in the normal range. About 12 years ago, after several abnormal results, I saw a hematologist, who reported nothing wrong after doing more extensive blood work. No reason could be given for it. I am concerned, but not obsessing over it. Is there any reason you can give for the slightly high lymphocyte count? -- S.M.
ANSWER: Lymphocytes are one of the two major types of white blood cells found in the blood (the other are the granulocytes, the most common of which are the neutrophils). High levels of lymphocytes raise suspicion for serious blood disorders such as some leukemias, lymphomas and related blood diseases, but there are other causes. Acute stress can do it, but you have been living with this for many years. Not having a spleen causes high levels of lymphocytes, whether you are born without one or have it surgically removed. Chronic infection is another reason.
I suspect your hematologist did a more sophisticated set of tests looking for blood disorders, and the fact that your level is the same after 12 years also supports my suspicion that this level is normal for you. Normal levels are generally defined as what is found in people without evidence of disease 95% of the time. So, by definition, 5% of normal people will have their result on any given lab fall outside of the normal range. Since yours is just outside of the normal range and, as I said, unchanged for years, I think you can relax your level of anxiety. Periodic blood tests do seem prudent, however, and further testing would be recommended in the event that the count starts getting higher or you develop any new symptoms.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity
Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized.
Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body.
Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.
Remember…
We are trying to contact all patients who missed their appointments during Covid. Please call our o ce if you do not have your cleaning recall schedule. ank you for your patience. Please remain safe and healthy. All patients of Dr. Eleczko are now being seen at our o ce!
CLOTHING AND CANCER PREVENTION
Manypeoplechoosetheirclothes basedlargelyontheirownunique fashion sense. But the clothes people wear can serve a greater purpose than broadcasting their sense of style to the world. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. The right clothing can absorb and block UV radiation and the SCF recommends wearing such attire as part of an effective sun protection regimen. When purchasing clothing, consumers are urged to determine each article’s ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Clothing with a UPF of 50 will only allow 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. The UPF rating system is relatively new, so consumers in North America may not find UPF ratings listed on the labels of clothing they typically purchase from their favorite retailers. In addition, the sun protective clothing industry in North America is self-regulated, which means some, but not all, manufacturers’ claims regarding the safety of their clothing may be dubious. However, consumers concerned about the safety of the clothing they wear when spending time in the sun can speak with dermatologists about finding clothing manufacturers with strong reputations of producing sun protective clothing that can protect them from the sun’s UV rays.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day
In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include:
• Taking the stairs
• Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work
• Getting off the bus or subway one stop early
• Parking in the farthest space from the door
• Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
PAW’S CORNER

A Handful
of Dog Treats Help the Medicine Go
Down
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a tip for the owner who is struggling to give their dog eye medicine. Our dog had cataract removal surgery earlier this year, and we’ve had to give him drops ever since. We’ve got it down! All you need are high-value treats given before, during and a er the drops. Please feel free to share my suggestion. -Jenny H. Asheville, North Carolina
DEAR JENNY: Many thanks for the advice! Making “medicine time” less stressful and more positive is so important for pets. Folks, Jenny recommended a 100% meat dog treat, which is a great high-value snack. Look for a product like this in the pet store’s fresh food aisle. Peanut butter is another fave among dogs. One of my dogs is a huge fan of Doritos. (I have to hide them.)
Here’s some more tips for giving oral medication or drops to a dog or cat:
-- Work o some of your pet’s energy beforehand. Take the dog for a walk or have your cat play with a toy.
-- Make sure the pet is held safely. Place the cat on your lap and cradle your arm around their body, placing your hand on their chest. Have the dog sit or lie down at your feet (or in your lap), facing forward or to the side.
-- Stay calm and positive. Give your pet a small treat while being encouraging and petting them.
-- Give the medication as quickly as possible. Don’t force or rush the process, but gently open their mouth and pop the pill in as far back as possible, then rub the underside of their jaw and throat to encourage swallowing. If giving eyedrops, gently li one eyelid and put in the drop, then repeat on the other side.
How do you give your pet their medication? Let us know at ask@ pawscorner.com.

COOKIES AND CREAM DONUTS
Makes 6 donuts
11/2 teaspoons distilled white vinegar
1 cup gluten-free flour
1/4 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 teaspoons coconut oil, melted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
12 vegan crunchy chocolate cookies, crushed
1 12-ounce jar Dollop Gourmet Madagascar Vanilla vegan frosting Milk
1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Pour the vinegar into a 1/2 cup measure. Add enough milk to come to the brim. Let sit until slightly thickened, 5 to 10 minutes.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, applesauce, coconut oil, and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Add the almond milk mixture and continue mixing for 1 minute more. Add half of the crushed cookies and mix until just combined.
4. Scoop the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling threequarters of the way full. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool before frosting.
5. Microwave the uncovered frosting jar for 5-second intervals, stirring in between, until soft. Gently frost the top of each donut. Sprinkle the remaining crushed cookies over the donuts.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy
* Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of.
* Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception.
* If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed.
* If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

DID YOU KNOW?
Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. Whileticksareactivethroughouttheyear, catsaremostlikelytoencounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks,whichareegg-shaped,arebigenoughtospot,socatownersshould conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE
Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career.
It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change.
Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
SUCCESSFUL WOMEN
HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.
The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.
Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
