HOME IMPROVEMENTS, LLC LC HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

‘Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there The children were nestled all snug in their beds While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads And mamma in her ’kerchief and I in my cap Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter Away to the window I flew like a flash Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below When, what to my wondering eyes should appear But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer With a little old driver, so lively and quick I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick More rapid than eagles his coursers they came And he whistled and shouted and called them by name "Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky So up to the house-top the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof As I drew in my head and was turning around Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk And laying his finger aside of his nose And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like the down of a thistle But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight “Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

T

According to Poet.org, this poem “offered a different take on Acco Ac co Santa Claus, a figure who was, until that time, traditionally depicted as a thinner, less jolly, horse-riding disciplinarian, a combination of mythologies about the British Father Christmas, the Dutch Sinterklaas, and the fourth-century bishop Saint Nicholas of Myra.” The new version showed Santa as a cheerful, chubby icon now “everpresent in holiday cards, movies, television shows, and malls everywhere.” Much less known is Moore’s “Old Santeclaus” poem.

his poem is in the public domain. According to Parade Magazine’s Jessica Sager and Poet.org, this quintessential poem, originally titled “A Visit” or “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” was first published anonymously on Dec. 23, 1823, in a Troy, NY newspaper called The Sentinel. Sager says Moore allegedly wanted to keep his authorship secret “because he was a professor and the piece wasn’t considered a scholarly work.” In 1837, Moore accepted credit and explained that he based his vision of Santa Claus on the historic St. Nicholas as well as a Dutch handyman near his home. Legend has it that this handyman drove the sleigh that took Moore home. Sager says, “Moore is largely credited with creating the modern-day image of Santa Claus as well as the domesticity associated with being home for the holidays, especially on Christmas Eve.”

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

Patient With PBC Needs Calcium Supplements Amid Normal Levels

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

--DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 60-year-old female who was

diagnosed with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in 2020. At the time, I had a bone density scan that showed osteopenia of the left femoral neck with a T-score of -1.3. My 10-year risk of any fracture was 6.9%, while my risk for hip fractures was 0.5 %. My hepatologist wants me to take a calcium supplement, even though my calcium level has always been normal. I have always been overweight and led a very sedentary way of life. I had vitamin D tests done yearly, but the deficiency was, negligently, never addressed by my doctors. So my first question is, do I really need to take this supplement? I am concerned that too much calcium may do more harm than good, and my osteopenia may not have been caused by my PBC. The other question is, would taking vitamin K2 along with vitamin D and calcium help absorb vitamin D better so that it would not accumulate in my kidneys and damage them in the process? -- R.Z. ANSWER: PBC is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the bile ducts. Without treatment, it can cause loss of the bile ducts, eventually leading to cirrhosis and liver failure. Since ursodeoxycholic acid has been available, fortunately the majority of people with this condition have a normal life expectancy. Few develop cirrhosis. A lesser-known complication of PBC is osteopenia and osteoporosis. There are several theories as to why this occurs, including decreased growth factors and toxicity to bone-producing cells. Low vitamin D and, possibly, vitamin K2 may play a role as well. It’s important for all people with osteopenia or osteoporosis to have adequate calcium in their diets. Calcium blood tests are not a reliable indicator of calcium stores in the body, since inadequate calcium intake will cause the body to take calcium out of the bones so that the blood levels remain normal. You can be severely deficient in calcium and dangerously osteoporotic with normal calcium blood levels. Ensuring adequate dietary calcium then becomes of the utmost importance. If you aren’t getting 1,000-1,200 mg of calcium in your diet, then changing your diet to add more or taking a supplement is recommended. Kidney stones are a complication of calcium supplementation, and there is controversy surrounding whether the calcification of blood vessels is more likely in people who take calcium supplements. For these reasons, dietary calcium is preferred, if possible. Many people with osteoporosis need supplemental vitamin D to keep their blood levels in the recommended range, which is 30-48 ng/mL (75-120 nmol/L) for a person with PBC and osteopenia, in my opinion. Although studies in Japan have shown benefit when using vitamin K2 supplementation in people with osteoporosis, I don’t generally recommend it, based on multiple other studies that failed to produce a benefit. However, for bone disease associated with PBC in particular, K2 is reasonable for those who wish to try it. Vitamin K2 works through its mineralization effect on the bone itself. By carefully monitoring vitamin D blood levels, you can avoid the unusual complication of vitamin D excess. Finally, becoming less sedentary will help, even if it’s walking an extra 10-20 minutes a day.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Flooding: The Union of Concerned Scientists notes that many agricultural regions of the United States have already experienced increased flooding. The effects of flooding on the agricultural sector are often devastating and include accelerated soil erosion, water pollution and damage to infrastructure that challenges farmers’ ability to get food from their farms to stores and, ultimately, consumers’ dinner tables.

DID YOU KNOW?

Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

Thinking about New Eyewear?

TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING Invest in quality gear - In addition to the tent, campers will need a tarp/ground cover to place under the tent. This helps prevent moisture seepage from the soil. Next, determine how everyone will sleep, whether on the ground or in cots. Cots can be the most comfortable options, but they take up a lot of space and can be heavy to transport - which is less than ideal when backpacking to a campsite. DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

No Peace on Earth fo for or Visiting Dogs and Ca Cats ats DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt and uncle insist on bringing their toy poodle, Frank, to the family gathering at my house this Christmas. The trouble is that my cat, Maximilian, cannot stand any dog. Especially Frank. Last year, Maxi chased Frank all around the house and scratched his snout pretty badly. I know they’re going to bring Frank again, because they bring him everywhere. I don’t want to tell them not to come. How can I have peace in the house this holiday? -Shane in Hyde Park, New York

Wednesday Wing Night 4pm-8pm Try our famous Old Hick sauce!

DEAR SHANE: I’m already envisioning your aunt and uncle as the sort who let their poodle run rampant throughout the house, clambering on laps and begging for bits of food under the table, right? And they want everyone to think of Frank as a charming little guy.

Friday Night Fish Fry 4pm-8pm Beer Battered, Broiled or Stuffed Haddock

Looking for Part/Full-Time Cook Apply with in.

Maxi’s aggression toward Frank isn’t surprising. Cats are territorial, and most instinctively don’t like dogs. Some barely tolerate other cats. Frank’s presence is very stressful for Maxi, and one visit a year will not help the two become more socialized. Since Frank is coming to the party no matter what, you need to concentrate on reducing Maxi’s stress and plan for ways to keep him comfortable and away from the poodle. Designate a room in your house as Maxi’s refuge on the day of the family gathering. Place his bedding, toys, food and water in it and keep him there during the event. What if the gathering takes place over two or more days? You’ll need to talk with your aunt and uncle and work out a schedule so that Maxi can roam the house while Frank is placed in a room, and vice versa.

Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer • Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children. • Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

Hometown Choice Michael Sharman Associate Broker 5989 Big Tree Road Lakeville, NY 14480

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

GIFT IDEAS FOR LAST-MINUTE SHOPPERS Early bird shoppers may purchase and even wrap gifts before December, but eleventh-hour shoppers may need some help come the holiday season. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list. LIVINGSTON EDITION

ALL HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Holiday Decorations Thank You! Thank You! Thank you! to all of you who go to a lot of time, trouble and expense to decorate your properties with lights, figures, and even music. It is such a joy to drive around looking at all the cheery displays. It really helps put one in the holiday spirit! Main Street Wreaths The Town of York hangs wreaths along Main Street every year and they’re so simple and beautiful. It really adds to the joy of the season for all that live here. This year they are all white lights and it makes it even more special. Thank you to those who provide these special wreaths for the season!

Avon Library Raffle Recipient I was delighted to receive a call from the Avon Library, during the Avon Holiday Spectacular, and learn I was the recipient of the Afghan raffle. The Heirloom Afghan is a treasure. I admire the talent of Dorthey Dunderdale, who crocheted and cross- stitched 35 of the squares, and the equally amazing work of the master needle workers of Avon's Sit N Knit group. Gail Settle, Eloise Puls, Kathy Barsz, Carol Cattone, Colleen Fressie, Mary Lathron, Grace Frenzel, Cathy Hancher, Pamela Bickford, and Linda Conrad are true assets to our community. Their hard work created an incredible masterpiece and I am grateful to them and the Avon Library to be able to enjoy and share in this community project.

Cameron B. Miller

Robert Lanning Walker December 28, 1937 - December 6, 2023

December 14, 2023 Livonia: At age 40, Cameron passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born on March 7, 1983 in Rochester, NY to his surviving parents Gregory A. and Joyce W. Miller. Cameron is also survived by his brothers, Zachary Miller and Colin Miller. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Harold and Catherine Miller and Orenza and Mary Waddell, along with his brother, Kyle Miller. Shortly after his birth he was flown down to New York City and became a patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he received a mixed match bone marrow transplant, one of the first of its kind. After spending several months in complete reverse isolation, he was able to go out into the world and live a normal life. With the undying love of his mother who was the donor of the transplant, as well as with a host of medical and community personnel, Cameron grew into a fully engaged individual. During his teenage years he became proficient in the then popular card game, Magic The Gathering. Through many games and tournaments, he reached the top ten junior players in the world. He went on to win a scholarship to the University of San Diego. Cameron moved to San Diego in 2001 and graduated with a BS in Business in 2005.For several years he tried his hand at marketing and real estate. After several setbacks he eventually became immersed in the field of day trading.

Avon - Bob was the oldest child of Robert and Marian (Smith) Walker. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Marian and his brothers Roger and John. Bob is survived by his wife Sandra (Geesler) and daughters Shannon Walker, Kerry (Ronald) Pickering and his sister Jean (David) Gloss. 13 nieces and nephews, 28 great-nieces and nephews, cousins and a large chosen family. Bob was incredibly lucky that he met the love of his life at 25. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August of 2023. He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1955 and SUNY Fredonia in 1960 where he majored in speech pathology. Bob taught English for 36 years. An accomplished welder, Bob enjoyed creating sculpture from steel and building unique pieces of metal art from circular staircases to mobiles. Bob became enamored with computers, taking classes at several area colleges, and built the first computer labs for Avon Central Schools. He was an avid golfer and skier and coached the Avon golf team for many years. Music was always a big part of Bob’s life. He sat 1st chair trumpet in high school and was soloist with the local drum and bugle corps. He found his natural tenor voice in college and sang with Finger Lakes Chorale, Eastman Rochester Chorus, Zion Episcopal Church and for many special occasions.

Cameron led a very solitary life by choice as well as design. And even though his life was filled with challenges from A to Z and beyond, he attained many of the goals he set for himself. He believed in maximizing potential for himself and for others. Cameron will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will take place at 10AM on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at Livonia Community Church, 41 Spring Street, Livonia, NY 14487. Interment will be held privately at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, NY. Memorial Contributions may be made to the: Immune Deficiency Foundation, P.O. Box 735108 | Chicago, IL 60673-5108.

The family will be welcoming visitors at Stephenson - Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee Street, Avon from 3pm-5pm and again from 7pm9pm on Friday, April 5th, 2024. A service of celebration will take place at 11am Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at Zion Episcopal Church. Memorial gifts may be made in Bob’s honor to Zion Episcopal Church, 10 Park Place Avon, NY 14414, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

Here’s a Tip * It might be hard to get or stay motivated for exercise once we’ve dipped into shortened days and lower temperatures. Exercise is so important to your health, so get it any way you can. Did you know that a half-hour snowball fight can burn 100 calories? Get out there and enjoy the winter weather! -- JoAnn * If you frequently face snow in your area, invest in a pair of running shoes that are designed for trail running. They have deeper cleats for better traction. Some are even waterproof. This will encourage you to run when it’s been snowing! * “To help your sneakers dry faster, remove the laces and sock liner and hang separately. Stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture. Hang them to dry on a sturdy hook or line, but not too close to a heater, as it’s possible to break down the support materials that way.” -- E.D. in Minnesota (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

ProHome Colorado – Part-Time Remote Position GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
