* “Set up a phone call between kids and grandparents a week or so before visiting. They can talk about what the kids might like to do. It gives the grandparents time to prepare, and it gives kids a chance to build excitement before the trip.” -- G.R. in Ohio

* Clean and disinfect a wood cutting board with salt and lemon juice. Sprinkle the board with a healthy dose of plain salt (kosher or coarse salt works best), and scrub it with a cut half of a lemon. Rinse and clean with soap and water.

* Hairspray spritzed on the end of a thread will stiffen it long enough to get it through a needle head. You also can thread your needle in front of a surface that’s an opposing color (i.e. a white piece of paper while threading a needle with black thread).

* When shopping for seamless bras, bring a T-shirt that is relatively tight-fitting to wear over the bras. You will know right away if there are seam lines or if the cup is too small. These sometimes get overlooked when a bra is worn under a looser shirt. -- E.D. in Ontario, Canada

* Another use for baking soda: It’s a perfect exfoliator. It’s good for the whole body and is pH neutral, so it won’t overdry skin. To use it, just make a paste and rub onto skin. Rinse and enjoy the softness.

In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in 2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns,cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. Bella’s Bumbas… Giving Children Mobility for Christmas & Year-Round

Bella's Bumbas began in Webster, NY with the intention of providing one little girl, Bella, with a means to become mobile and navigate the world on her own. at initial intention has blossomed into Bella's Bumbas LTD, who've provided over 2,600 chairs to children in every US state and 65 countries across the globe!

Bella was born with Spina Bi da and has no feeling below her knees. A er seeing how limited she was when it came to mobility, Bella's aunt and uncle began looking for ways to help. ey saw the plans for the Bumbo wheelchair online and a er seeing the cost of the comparable commercial version, decided to make one for her.

is decision was spurred on by the fact that Bella's family's insurance, like many families, will only cover products that are deemed medically necessary. Insurance companies typically only cover a wheelchair once every ve years, a time-frame that would result in quickly outgrowing the covered wheelchair. Insurance also generally does not cover tiny wheelchairs until the child needs transportation such as a school bus. Imagine all the missed adventures and opportunities of not being independent and mobile between birth and school age.

A er building the rst chair and seeing just how much joy it brought Bella, simply being able to interact with her siblings and friends and get herself around, the family decided to make more chairs for other children facing mobility challenges. Each chair is hand-built in their Webster, NY workshop, with the assistance of many volunteers. Families are not charged for the chairs, they only ask that the families cover the shipping costs. In the United States, the shipping ranges from $62.40 to $74 depending on the seat style chosen. is, however, is only possible with the support of generous donors who help fund their non-pro t.

Each chair design (there are four to choose from) has been rigorously tested by children using them in real-world conditions, and are used on grass, carpet, and any surface a child might nd themselves. Each chair includes a push handle mount and can be customized to the child's needs with add-ons such as a basket, foot extension, Kris Kart for a portable ventilator, as well as a one hand drive, that can be independently rolled by a child with limited to no ability to use one or the arm, a one hand drive style.

eir chairs provide more than just mobility: they provide a way for a child to be more social and participate in life situations that they may not otherwise have been able to. ey can be used without worry at splash pads, playgrounds, or just outside playing with friends. Another bene t of the chair is that it provides children with exercise. e chairs help improve both upper body and core strength, and have even helped some children reduce the time they spend on breathing devices. Bella’s Bumbas is a family run 501(c)3 non-pro t managed and run by Rebecca Orr (President), Je rey Shorr (Vice President), Marty Parzynski (Managing Director), Laurel Fletcher (Secretary), and Joshua Orr (Director), along with the help of many volunteers locally, nationally and internationally. It’s di cult to actually count all of the volunteers as so many people around the world help in anonymity, simply by sharing their stories of their “Bumbaleers”. Some build chairs, while others help by obtaining packing materials. eir common purpose is ensuring every child needing a chair receives one.

(NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious,chronic health problems.

Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.

Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal.

Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

(NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up.

What You Can Do

1. Spend time with your children.

2. Be a positive role model.

3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.

4. Read to your children.

5. Remember #DadJokesRule!

There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2

What Dads are Already Doing

Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:

• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3

• 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4

• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5

• Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6

• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7

Eventhoughfathersarelargelymoreinvolvedthaninpreviousgenerations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8

To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign.

“All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.

The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment.

Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive flowers can brighten up the space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and give floors or carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with laundered hand towels at the ready. Children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System

When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.

Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.

Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have three-pronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Maintain appliances and replace older ones. While reducing reliance on energy-thirsty appliances is a great way to reduce energy consumption, no one needs to throw away their refrigerators. Instead, maintain appliances so they are not forced to work harder, and thereby consume more energy, to function. Routinely clean the filters on window air conditioners, replacing them if they’re worn down. In addition, have HVAC units serviced annually to ensure they’reoperatingatpeakcapacity. Replace older appliances, including refrigerators, that are no longer effective.

On Dec 10th my husband lost a very large man-made tool drawer that he had in the back of his truck. He thought his tailgate was latched shut, but it was not, and the drawer full of his hand tools fell out onto the road on a local street. A wonderful man saw it, picked it up with all the tools and took it back to his home and posted that he found it on a local social media page. Someone who knows my husband, and knew that he had that type of tool drawer, called him, and informed him of the post and asked him if he lost his tools. A very happy ending and so thankful for this honest man.!

My husband and I attended the best ever Christmas Parade on Main Street Honeoye Falls. So well orchestrated with decorated equipment from many countries. I want to say thank you to everyone who marched and took the time to decorate all the trucks beautifully. This includes the sheriff’s department and Santa on his motorcycle too. Potty Tales: Behold the Magic of Shop Towels

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When I turned 78 years ago, my wringer washer broke. I hated toting laundry to the laundromat, and I hated lugging home kitty litter to my many cats. So I came up with a solution: I use washable cotton bed pads and cotton shop towels, laid out over plant trays. ey can quickly be washed in a big tub with hot water, soap and bleach. My cats took to them right away -- the big cats don’t miss the cotton pads, and my other cats will use the shop towels and then wrap them over their poop. e savings are tremendous for me, and there is no litter to buy and lug home. e shop towels last for years. It may sound weird to some people, but if you read the reviews under most cotton bed pads, many are purchased by people for their pets. -- Eva D., via email

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Disposable potty pads can be expensive, and their plastic lining seems like a disaster for the environment. But my 15-year-old Chihuahua, Shemp, has incontinence problems and can’t make it outside when he needs to pee. Instead of going broke buying the pads, I line a plastic tray with newspaper and a cotton shop towel. I change this padding each time Shemp uses it, around two to three times per day. e newspaper is disposable, and I wash the shop towels in the laundry sink with soap and hot water. -- Jane K., Lexington, Kentucky

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.

Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.

Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.

Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

Ten-Year Fracture Risk Determines Need for Osteoporosis Meds

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m 77 and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I’m taking Fosamax and following all the steps recommended for strengthening bones. But I have two questions: First, is it possible to avoid a fracture without taking medication? Second, is it necessary to avoid coffee completely? I am confused about both questions, having read a lot of conflicting information online. I recently finished reading a book that strongly condemned osteoporosis medication, and I have also read that coffee is OK, even good, for bones; though, other sources say it leeches calcium from bones. I would appreciate some clarity on these issues. -- J.M.

ANSWER: I have also read dire warnings about osteoporosis drugs, particularly the bisphosphonate class that includes alendronate (Fosamax), but the truth is more complex than it first appears.

The most important thing to realize is that every person has their own individual risk of developing an osteoporotic-type fracture. For young, healthy people with strong bones, the risk is very small, but as we age, the risk of fracture increases. Many medical conditions, as well as diet, exercise and some medications, affect the risk of fracture. Whether we are men or women, and even what our ethnicity is, affects fracture risk. The bone mineral density measured by a DEXA scan provides much information, but an accurate fracture risk prediction needs to take a person’s whole history into account. Only people at high risk for fracture should be taking a medication like Fosamax. A standard guideline is that people should be recommended medication therapy if their 10-year risk of a hip fracture is greater than 3%, or their 10-year risk of any kind of major osteoporotic fracture is 20% or higher. If a person’s risk is less than these numbers, they may be unnecessarily subjecting themselves to the risk of medication. The FRAX score is a standardized, country-specific way of estimating risk (www.sheffield.ac.uk/ FRAX/tool.aspx).

If a group of people has a risk of fracture of 20% in the next 10 years, then 80% of them will not have a fracture if they don’t take medication. Like treatment for high blood pressure or high cholesterol, medication treatment only helps a small proportion of those who receive it. We don’t have the ability to predict with certainty who will have a bad outcome from these conditions, so we recommend treating people when they reach a certain degree of risk.

Treating only higher-risk patients leads to the drug helping a higher proportion of the group, but some people who were not offered medication will develop the bad outcome we’re trying to avoid. A person who gets a hip fracture that could have been prevented with medication treatment is a tragedy. In my opinion, a person should know the risks of treatment and the risk of withholding treatment before making a decision.

The calcium question is also controversial, but while it is true that caffeine causes the body to lose calcium, if you take in enough calcium through diet, coffee does not seem to increase your risk of a fracture.

Is 2023 the year when you have to consider moving into assisted living? Or perhaps helping an elderly relative make the move? In either case, your rst steps should be gathering as much information as possible.

What type of care is needed? Daily help with everything from bathing to eating to remembering to take medications? Or is a more specialized, secure location needed for memory care? Or something in between?

What facilities are in your area? It will be important that friends and family can visit easily, as well as having access to the same medical care a er the move. Going out for lunch locally can go a long way toward keeping relationships intact.

Once you’ve selected a few facilities to explore, start digging for information. Call the state and ask about the licenses, accreditation and safety track records. Call your local re and police departments about potential safety issues.

Do you know anyone who works in one of the facilities you’re considering, or who knows someone who lives there? eir input could be crucial when it comes to learning about any rules the facility might have, or any sta shortages that could lead to problems with client care or any ongoing complaints about the food.

en ask for a tour at every facility on your list. Stay as long as you can and ask a lot of questions. Get a copy of the potential contract to give your attorney to review (ideally one specializing in elder law).

Money: You’ll need to know what everything costs, and by everything, that means all the fees that might not be included in the overall amount. Are clients charged for eld trips or special entertainment, for example?

How about laundry costs?

As part of your information-gathering, go online and search for “how to select an assisted living facility” or something similar. Look for checklists of questions to ask. You’ll need all the information you can nd.

e NYS Veterans Home at Batavia, a NYS Department of Health facility, is seeking a strong candidate to oversee and manage nursing services at this 126-bed skilled nursing facility. Applicants must have a current NYS RN license and registration plus a bachelor’s degree in nursing AND four years of post-licensure experience in a nursing administrative management position in a long-term care setting. Preference will be given to applicants with in-depth knowledge of New York State processes and regulations for care of residents in nursing home or long-term care facilities and experience managing clinical sta in that setting.

Salary includes a base salary range of $137,066 to $147,256 per year plus an additional $20,000 yearly geographical pay.
