In the morning, while the first pot of coffee is brewing, I fill the coffee carafe with hot water and let it sit until the coffee is ready. It keeps the coffee hot longer. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Help Feed Hungry Pets This Holiday Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, pandemic lockdowns, job losses and financial instability caused many families, along with their pets, to experience food insecurity. Because groceries are a higher priority for families than pet food, many pets got less to eat or lived off table scraps, which can be unhealthy over the long term. In 2020, local shelters, businesses and other groups came together to collect donations of food or money to purchase food and supplies for pets. These were a great help. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Rising prices due to inflation and supply chain issues, plus continued financial instability, means that many pets will go hungry again this year. Can Paw’s Corner readers rise to the occasion again this year and help neighbors and their pets to stay fed and healthy? -- Shelter Volunteer in Wichita, Kansas DEAR VOLUNTEER: You’ve done just that, and I thank you! This holiday season, I know my readers will make the effort to help pets through donations of food, supplies and cash. But maybe you’re a new pet owner or have never donated before. Maybe you don’t even have a pet right now, but want to help. There are so many choices out there. My advice is to pick just one way to help, because no contribution is too small. Pet food supplier Chewy has a great article on its website with ways to help: https://be.chewy.com/ pet-food-banks/ Local shelters often do community outreach to help feed pets so owners can keep their pets and not surrender them. Contact the nearest pet shelter, either by email or phone, and ask what type of donations they need. Your contribution will go directly to that shelter, so you’ll know the impact you’re making. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. ROOFING & SIDING

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Quick Cleaning Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive flowers can brighten up the space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and give floors or carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with laundered hand towels at the ready. Children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.

APPRECIATING FRUITCAKE: A much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. only two drugs for the past three years, and they are both for high blood pressure. Now she finds that her blood pressure is 110/70 and wonders why she can’t take less of her medications as an experiment. For instance, if she cut her pills in half and still has her blood pressure under 120/80, would there be any problem with this? -- R.I. ANSWER: The optimum goal of blood pressure treatment is still not known; however, evidence is accumulating that it might be lower than the less than 140/less than 90 that is has typically been the target. At least in higher-risk people with high blood pressure, a large trial found that a goal blood pressure of less than 120/less than 90 had better outcomes than the traditional goal. A more recent follow-up study showed that risk of dementia was also lower in the group that had the lower blood pressure. Not everyone can tolerate a blood pressure that low: Side effects of medications can be problematic. But it’s reasonable to aim at 120/80 or less. In your sister’s case, she is a little bit below that. It wouldn’t be unreasonable if, after discussing with her doctor, she tried reducing the dose of one of the medications. If her blood pressure remains lower than 120/80, she could continue that lower dose. However, if she feels perfectly well on her current dose, there is not a reason to reduce the dose. In either case, don’t reduce the dose without a discussion, nor cut the pill in half without checking with the doctor or pharmacist. Some pills shouldn’t be cut in half. ***

Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti.

WEIGHING IN ON EXERCISE VS. DIETING FOR BETTER WEIGHT LOSS RESULTS Statistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today’s children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago. As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while others insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say. The Mayo Clinic advises that cutting calories through dietary changes appears to promote weight loss more effectively than physical exercise alone. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is about 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People generally see the largest short-term results when they eat healthy foods and healthy portions. Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole-grain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time. But exercise should not be abandoned in favor of a low-calorie diet. Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, who runs one of the largest obesity clinics in Canada, says that weight loss occurs from what’s created in the kitchen, but health is gained in the gym. Dr. Freedhoff often advises his clients to make smart changes to the foods they eat to spur weight loss, and then incorporate exercise into their lifestyles as a way to keep the body in top form. Regular physical exercise is necessary to maintain strong bones, build muscle, improve flexibility, and keep the cardiovascular system working efficiently. Exercise also releases endorphins, which can improve mental alertness and feelings of well-being.

The Mayo Clinic notes that studies have shown that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long haul are those who get regular physical activity. When it comes to losing weight, the foods a person eats play a bigger role than exercise. But it is the combination of both diet and exercise that can lead to greater overall health and sustained weight loss. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Downtown Avon What a beautiful job the downtown Avon merchants have done decorating their storefront windows for the Christmas season! Cheers also to Assemblyman Marjory Byrnes as well. Nice job, everyone!

RPO Gala Holiday Pops So lucky are we to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! The Gala Holiday Pops was sensational and such a panacea for this hectic time we’re going through. Jeff Tyzik led the ensemble through the hymns of the season, and performed some songs with his own personal arrangements that made them more memorable and fun. Another year off for the orchestral choir made up of high school students from our area, hopefully as Tyzik noted, they’ll be back next year. Jeff does such a nice job of introducing each song and many times along with a story. Such a nice addition to the wonderful music we heard! He also noted that the arts, and of course music, can lift our spirits and souls in our times of need. The Rochester Philharmonic continues to give us the gift of wonderfully performed music. Thanks RPO!

Christmas thanks Thanks so much to the Rushville Lions Club who delivered wonderful Christmas food boxes which included Ham & the trimmings for a lovely meal along with some cupboard staples and even a pretty Christmas pillow. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Christmas lights Thank you to every single family throughout Livingston County and neighboring counties who adorned their homes and yards with Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever my family drives anywhere, my children enthusiastically look for these homes and enjoy them so much. You have brought so much joy to this season. Thank you!

Wanda’s is wonderful! Where can you go to eat where the owner comes around with a tray and passes out Christmas cookies and snacks to the diners? Wandas in Livonia! People should drive through it. It is open to everyone. It is better taken care of than most cemeteries. Thank you. - T.L.D. Riga Christmas Concert On Saturday, December 18th, the Riga Recreation hosted its annual Christmas Concert celebration at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall, featuring the Churchville-Chill School District’s singing group, Varsity Vocals, lead by conductor Mr. Erik Reinhart. The Riga community was treated to outstanding vocalizations of holiday favorites. The true essence of Christmas was captured by this wonderfull group of singers and their teacher. We have here one more example of the young people and staff of CCCSD that we are very proud of. Merry Christmas! - David T.

Diann J. Brown December 14, 2021 Diann J. Brown, age 72, of Perry passed away on Tuesday December 14th at her home. She was born in Greenwood, NY on August 3, 1949 a daughter to the late John A. and Jean F. (Reynolds) Weidner.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

Homemade hummus with truly unique taste Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander. Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

We all have those days… or even longer periods… when everything seems to go wrong. We encounter disappointments at every hand. We realize that we simply must try harder… we must somehow find a way to overcome the difficulties. If we never had to contend with adversity, we would surely lose our ability to deal with it. We would miss out on the satisfaction of facing up to a nasty situation and coming out the winner! Let’s keep that in mind when troubles arise. Our experience enables us to anticipate the needs and desires of those who come to us for our help, and to provide for them in a very comforting way. Call us in your time of need.

Makes 2 cups 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped Salt 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained 4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish 2 tablespoons chopped red onion 21/2 teaspoons ground cumin 11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chile flakes 2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below) Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below)

Makes about 2 tablespoons In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine 1 teaspoon each of: ground cumin, ground turmeric, saffron threads, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, ground smoked paprika, finely grated lemon peel.

Yogurt Flatbread Serves 4 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon coarse salt 21/2 cups plain yogurt Olive oil Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus FRANCIS P. CHURCH (1839-1906)

Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? – Virginia O’Hanlon

no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

V

irginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measuredby the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. – The New York Sun, September 21, 1897 Thanks Faith Trimble, for recommending this beautiful column.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
