TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD The dawn of a new year represents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible. While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR WINTER
*We love to partner with our local businesses and neighbors. Don’t be steered by your insurance company. Take your repairs locally and receive the quality and care you and your vehicle deserve.
Upgrade your wiper blades. Perhaps nothing is compromised more than visibility when driving in winter compared to other times of year. Snow makes it hard to see when driving, but fewer hours of daylight also can affect visibility. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that approximately half of all fatal crashes occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., even though the number of drivers on the road during those hours is considerably lower than it is during the daytime. The difficulty of driving at night is even more significant when wiper blades are not up to the task of keeping rain and snow off drivers’ windshields. Prior to winter, inspect wiper blades and upgrade them, if necessary. Streaks left on a windshield are a telltale sign that blades need to be replaced.

WHY SHOP SMALL & LOCAL? The money you spend has a greater impact on your community, and ultimately you, when you spend it locally. For every $100 you spend, $68 recirculates and remains local, versus $43 when you spend online or at a national chain.* A local business is able to provide a product or service that is backed by care, concern, hard work and dedication that you just can’t always get from a corporation.

Sterling is a 1 year old Shih Tzu and the cutest RIT Tiger. He has two “girlfriends” and loves his walks and playing with his favorite toy, Monkey. TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING Invest in quality gear - In addition to the tent, campers will need a tarp/ground cover to place under the tent. This helps prevent moisture seepage from the soil. Next, determine how everyone will sleep, whether on the ground or in cots. Cots can be the most comfortable options, but they take up a lot of space and can be heavy to transport - which is less than ideal when backpacking to a campsite. Inflatable mattresses or sleeping pads can be used in conjunction with sleeping bags to provide a soft, cushioned surface. Some are affordable at $40 while others may cost as much as $300. Costlier options may be best for frequent campers.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

New Year’s resolutions are made every January, and many people use this tradition as a chance to declare their intention to change jobs in the year ahead. The reasons why people change jobs vary, but the most popular reason to do so might surprise you. According to a LinkedIn survey of more than 10,000 people who recently changed jobs, 45 percent of respondents indicated they changed jobs due to a lack of opportunities for advancement with their previous employers. The next most popular reason to switch jobs was dissatisfaction with the leadership of senior management. Employers may be surprised to learn that dissatisfaction with compensation was relatively low on the list of why people changed jobs, as just 34 percent of respondents listed that among the top reasons why they left their old jobs. While that may encourage employers to find ways other than pay increases to keep their employees happy, it’s also important to note that the LinkedIn survey found that money was the second most popular reason job switchers, 74 percent of whom received higher salaries at their new jobs, chose their new positions.

The Power of Shopping Local: Building Stronger Communities BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n a world dominated by big-box retailers and online shopping giants, it’s easy to overlook the importance and impact of supporting local businesses. However, the benefits of shopping locally extend far beyond individual purchases, reaching into the very heart of our communities. There are so many reasons to choose local businesses to help build stronger, more resilient communities. Local businesses are the backbone of a community’s economy. When you shop locally, a more significant percentage of your money stays within the community, circulating through various local businesses and contributing to the area’s overall economic growth. Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and fosters entrepreneurship, as it provides opportunities for individuals to start and sustain their ventures.
Community Involvement Local business owners are more likely to be actively involved in community initiatives and events. They sponsor local sports teams, participate in fundraisers, and contribute to the community’s overall well-being. Resilience in Economic Downturns Communities with a strong base of local businesses tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. The interdependence of local businesses fosters a supportive network that can weather economic challenges more effectively than areas overly reliant on external corporations.
Shopping locally gives the gift that keeps giving, with: Personalized Service One of the standout features of local businesses is the personalized and attentive service they provide. Local shop owners often have a deep knowledge of their products and customers, allowing them to offer tailored recommendations and a more personalized shopping experience. Deb Paul says, “By spending your money locally, you may find yourself in a heartfelt conversation about your holiday plans and favorite seasonal recipes, as opposed to the more commercialized alternative... with incessant sales pitches and half-hearted, corporate-mandated greetings.” Fostering Social Connections
Unique and Handcrafted Products Local businesses frequently offer unique and handcrafted products not found in mainstream stores. Whether it’s handmade crafts, artisanal foods, or locally-designed clothing, these items add character and diversity to the community. Environmental Benefits Shopping locally often involves shorter transportation distances for goods, reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of consuming goods.
Local businesses often serve as gathering spots where people meet, connect, and build a sense of community. Coffee shops, bookstores, and local markets become hubs for social interactions, contributing to a more connected and vibrant community. In a globalized world, the choices we make as consumers have far-reaching consequences. By choosing to shop locally, we not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the unique fabric of our communities. The power to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods lies in our hands every time we make a purchase. Let’s embrace the vitality of local businesses and nurture the communities we call home.
Community Character Local businesses contribute to a community’s distinct character and charm. They often reflect the local culture and values, adding to the neighborhood’s overall identity. A thriving local business scene can attract visitors and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Here’s a Tip * Before you use your grater to grate cheese, give it a quick shot of nonstick spray. It will keep the cheese from gunking up in the grate. If you need softened butter for a recipe, you can grate it from frozen and it will soften up very quickly, but not melt like in a microwave. * Clean your cellphone screen often. This is especially important if you have a smartphone. We use our fingers nonstop to touch the phone, then put it directly up to our face. It’s a germ’s paradise. Just remember: A quick swipe with an alcohol cloth might save you from getting the flu this season. Stay healthy! * When heater season is in full effect -- like now -- I keep a spray bottle of water to which I add two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener. I spritz the house from time to time, and it will add humidity as well as a pleasant scent, but it also keeps my carpets from making my kids little zappers (from static buildup when dragging their feet!). -- M.A. in Ohio (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Estrace Cream Is Safe to Use in Woman Who Had Melanoma
Serving Our Community for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
Accepting New Patients.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman who has been using Estrace vaginal cream weekly for several years. I am in excellent health, work out daily, run half-marathons and have my own business. I take 10 mg of atorvastatin daily. Ten years ago, I had melanoma removed from my arm. My concern is the use of Estrace. My gynecologist recommended that I use it after a Pap smear, but my primary care physician is not of the same mind. I would appreciate your opinion on this. My mother had breast cancer in her 80s, my sister had uterine cancer, and my brother passed away from bladder cancer. -- C.S. ANSWER: As far as the safety of using estradiol (Estrace), the bioidentical hormone to major natural estrogen, I am definitely of the same opinion as your gynecologist. When used topically, it works on the vulva and the lining of the vagina, keeping the tissue healthy. Without estrogen, the tissues that line the female perineum can become atrophic (thinned), predisposing a woman to discomfort, infections and incontinence. The Pap smear may have resulted in a finding that was suggestive of vaginal atrophy (increased neutrophils). Without treatment, the labia can even fuse together. With long-term use, the estrogen levels in the body are only slightly higher in women who use topical estrogen compared to those who do not, so the absorption into the body is minimal. The only case where I get concerned is with someone who has a personal history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor, such as endometrial cancer and some breast cancers. In those cases, I discuss options with both the patient and their oncologist.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL CLEANINGS WHILE WEARING BRACES Consult with your dentist. Dental hygienists and dentists are experienced at cleaning teeth that have braces. Typical visits for routine cleanings will not be much different than visits without braces. The staff will take X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of the teeth. Hygienists know how to manipulate cleaning tools around braces to clean effectively. Very often, cavities can be filled and even root canals performed with braces on teeth, so there’s no need to worry. Should braces be in the way, the dentist can work with the orthodontist and have a bracket temporarily removed and replaced to facilitate treatment.

POISON PREVENTION TIPS Choose products with child safety caps. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports nine out of 10 poisoning incidents involving children occur in the home. In 2019, approximately 67,500 children under the age of five ended up in emergency rooms due to unintended poisoning. Parents can protect children by keeping medicines in their original child-safe containers. When buying cleansers, cleaners and detergents, choose products that have strong child-safety lids and seals.

Food: Food is a priority when traveling. If you can stay in accommodations with a kitchenette, you can reduce dining costs and make meals as desired. Food plans are another consideration. Book destinations that offer an all-inclusive or a meal plan option. It may not be the cheapest alternative, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing food costs already are covered.

Big thank you Thank you to the people who bought my dinner last Saturday night at a local restaurant. It’s a hard season for me since my husband and I were married Christmas Day. He passed from Agent Orange in 2011. It was so nice of them to treat me to dinner. I hope they have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous to someone they didn’t know.
RANTS RANTSRANTS
RAVES RAVES RAVES
Courteous Drivers I’d like to give a shout out to the Henrietta drivers who show such courtesy and caution when cyclists are going through intersections or crossing the crosswalks. They wait until the cyclist is completely through the intersection or over the crosswalk before making their turns. Thank you for truly sharing the road.
Not Playgrounds Please let us remind you that senior apartment buildings are not playgrounds. You need to be more respectful of the elderly that live there. Take the children outside to play or to a playground where it's more suitable and safe for the tenants. Appointments I’m furious about, mostly medical offices, when they call to reschedule an appointment that you’ve been waiting months for. They want to reschedule for sometimes 2 to 3 months, if not more, out further. How about “bumping” others that haven’t been waiting so long. If it’s not your fault that the appointment is cancelled but it seems you’re the one that inconvenienced. You have no heart To all the people that dump their animals, you are the lowest. Do you even care that as you drive away, they are thinking what they did wrong? Take them to a shelter so they are warm and fed. How can you even sleep at night.

“A certain amount of opposition is a great help to a man. Kites rise against, not with the wind...” ~ John Neal
We all have those days… or even longer periods… when everything seems to go wrong. We encounter disappointments at every hand. We realize that we simply must try harder… we must somehow find a way to overcome the difficulties. If we never had to contend with adversity, we would surely lose our ability to deal with it. We would miss out on the satisfaction of facing up to a nasty situation and coming out the winner! Let’s keep that in mind when troubles arise. Our experience enables us to anticipate the needs and desires of those who come to us for our help, and to provide for them in a very comforting way. Call us in your time of need.
Thank You Once Again During this Christmas season I want to express my gratitude for the gifts of your cards, flowers, and cookies. These are such kind and compassionate examples of our community for which I am so fortunate to live. May the New Year be one of Peace and wellness. Mary Lou Marks

LIMA •␣582-1655 UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

While there are plenty of places throughout North America to ring in the new year, few, if any, can compare to Times Square, where revelers have been celebrating the dawn of a new year for well over a century. According to the Times Square Alliance, New Year’s Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904. But the New Year’s Eve ball, an iconic symbol of the holiday across the globe, did not make an appearance until 1907, when it descended from a flagpole atop One Times Square. Made of iron and wood, that first ball weighed 700 pounds and was outfitted with 100 25-watt light bulbs. One hundred light bulbs might have seemed like a lot back in 1907, but a century later the special ball made to mark the centennial celebration was illuminated with more than 32,000 Philips Luxeon LED bulbs, which organizers felt greatly increased the brightness and color capabilities of the ball.
DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Volunteers NEEDED
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Prepare Your Home for a New Puppy DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This Christmas, we planned to get a puppy, but it is too young to leave its mother yet. Instead of revealing the puppy on Christmas Day, we wrapped a big box that had a little note in it from Santa saying that a new puppy will arrive soon, and to write down their ideas for a name on the back of the card. Do you have any tips on how we can prepare the house for the puppy's arrival in a few weeks? -- Chet in Boise, Idaho DEAR CHET: First, kudos to you for handling the Christmas announcement so well! That's a great way to surprise the kids during the gift-opening while not having to supervise a puppy who has no idea what is going on. And keeping the puppy with its mother until it's at least 8 to 12 weeks old is so important. Involving the kids in preparation for the puppy's arrival is important. Explain to them that puppies like to explore -- often with their teeth. So they need to put away their toys, clothing and anything that they don't want to get chewed up. Puppies can also get into foods and cleaning items that can be dangerous or deadly for them, so those items need to be lifted off the floor or removed from the house's common areas entirely. Talk to them about how they can help train the new puppy. This will prepare them for how to handle, talk to and correct the puppy from the first day of its arrival. Call 585-533-9913 or email: manager@rbgunclub.com WHAT TO KNOW WHEN BUYING FROM A PRIVATE SELLER Get as much paperwork as possible. Many vehicle owners prioritize recordkeeping, saving maintenance receipts for everything from standard oil changes to more significant repairs. When buying from private sellers, buyers should not hesitate to request a vehicle history report as well as all documentation of maintenance that has been performed on the car since sellers have owned it. Consider it a red flag if sellers do not have any paperwork or refuse to provide it.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
