www.jafarmmarket.com Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

BUILD A BUDGET THAT WORKS FOR YOU Determine your net income. The Bank of America notes that net income, also known as “take-home pay,” is the foundation of a budget. In the era of direct deposit, it can be easy for anyone to forget how much money they’re taking in each month. Salaried workers can determine their net income pretty quickly and easily, while workers who are paid by the hour and freelancers may need to do a little extra work and serve as their own bookkeepers as they try to calculate their net incomes.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * When Prohibition started, alcohol could only be bought for medicinal and religious purposes, from a pharmacy or a doctor. “Medicinal whiskey” was prescribed for just about anything and used to treat conditions such as toothaches and the flu. With a prescription, a patient could legally purchase up to one pint of hard liquor every 10 days.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer • Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children. • Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards. • Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces. • Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

Princess is a 16 year old maltese, she and her Christmas pal are watching for elves and Santa.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should an owner punish puppy after accident? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri
Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star. Clean up the mess (spray with an odor eliminator) and continue your training schedu

27 Years of Winter Magic: Dansville’s Annual Celebration of Community and Cheer S U B M I T T E D BY SA LO M E FA R R A RO, E V E N TS CO M M I T T E E CO C H A I R
D
ansville’s Winter in the Village started in 1996 by Alice Burdick and Susan DeMuth with the Dansville Business Association, assisted by Randy DeMuth, Dawn Didas, and Dorothy Hotchkiss in the early years. The original concept was to fill all store fronts on Main Street with community organizations, musicians, and vendors to create a vintage holiday feel in downtown Dansville. The ensuing community attendance generated hustle and bustle on Main Street and throughout downtown, akin to decades’ earlier experiences. Santa has played a pivotal role every year, visiting with children (now a staple at Dansville Public Library) and being the star of the parade, riding in one of our fire trucks. Vendors, school groups (particularly musical), and local organizations’ activities have always featured prominently. The entire event is by the community, for the community. More than 100 individuals, businesses and organizations currently participate. Attendance easily surpassed 1,000 people. The Dansville Chamber of Commerce became the organizing group after a few years. Its Events Committee takes the lead for the Santa Parade, Wine and Spirits Walk, ice sculptures, a window decorating contest (Congratulations to the 2023 window decorating contest winners in this year’s theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas! 1st Place - Marleen Mark, 2nd Place Mill Creek Optical, 3rd Place - R’Meraki Hair Salon, Honorable Mention - Empire Realty Group), and a costume contest (added in 2022), as well as vendors and nonprofits at the Town Hall, Genesee Community College, and outdoors throughout downtown. The committee gathers details from participants (much easier with technology today) and creates cohesive marketing for the event, notably Facebook and Instagram (Dansville’s Winter in the Village). The committee works closely and gratefully with local fire and police departments for safety considerations. The Lions Club Fantasy of Lights Christmas tree Costume contest winner - eight maids a extravaganza in Church Park milking; Photo credit Caleb J Miller was incorporated into Winter in the Village, becoming the end point for the Santa Parade. This allowed the parade to grow, notably with the help of parade coordinator Kaylee Walker Lohrmann. The 2023 parade included our High School Drum Line, K’s Canines on parade, WNY Side Saddle Group, floats, and our wonderful Dansville Ambulance and Fire Departments.

and organizations. This year, 18 sculptures were placed downtown (6 more than 2022), 12 of them carved in the 2023 theme: The Twelve Days of Christmas. Winter in the Village is always held on the first Saturday of December regardless of the weather! It is an all day, communitywide event, starting with the Jingle Bells 5K, school music groups at Star Theatre and ending with the Wine and Spirits Walk as well as free horse and wagon rides. People of all ages come together to celebrate a day filled with holiday happiness, fun, family, and friendship. 2023 marked the event’s 27th year, and co-chairs of the Events Committee, Julee Acomb and Salome Farraro, say Winter in the Village Ice carving demo finished; continues and improves photo credit Salome Farraro every year because the Dansville community values it. Thank you to the many people who step up and contribute in ways big and small. Susan DeMuth, owner of Dogwood Trading Company with her husband Randy, reflects that the children she saw at early events now attend Winter in the Village with children of their own.
Ice sculptures have been added in recent years, along with a live ice carving demo, organized by Lorri Welch. The popular sculptures are generously sponsored by businesses, individuals,

TIPS FOR COMFORTABLE CAMPING Adjust sound accordingly - Some people love drifting off to sleep to the sound of crickets, while others are kept awake by the nighttime sounds of nature. Foam earplugs can mute some of those sounds and even the snoring of a tent partner. Campers also can set up a charged smartphone with a white noise app and use that to block out unwanted noises.

Add the eggs and parsley and mix well. Let cool for 10 minutes. 4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. 5. Form the shrimp mixture into patties, using 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the mixture, depending on what size you desire, and pat lightly with the flour. Cook two to three at a time in the hot oil until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Fire Safety Protocols To Keep In Mind When Holiday Decorating • Buy the safest lights. It might be tempting to buy the most inexpensive lights, especially given all the extra costs already associated with the holiday season. However, safety should be the utmost priority when buying new lights. Testing laboratories such as CSA, Intertek and UL certify products to ensure they’re safe for use. Products that aren’t certified should be avoided. • Use lights and cords where they’re intended to be used. The packaging on lights will indicate if the product is intended to be used indoors or outdoors. It’s vital that individuals decorating their homes pay attention to these labels. Extension cords made for indoors also should not be used outdoors and vice versa. • Be especially careful with candles. Candles should only be burned when adults are in the room and should always be extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. When burning candles, place them on heat-resistant surfaces that are beyond the reach of curious kids and pets. Never place candles within arm’s length of Christmas trees or houseplants, including poinsettias.
SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

• Do not pinch light cords. Stringing lights can be a hassle, but cords should never be pinched in doors or windows or beneath interior and exterior furniture. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the cord, which in turn increases the likelihood of fire.

• Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs.
• Avoid overloading circuits. Overloaded circuits pose a significant fire hazard. When plugging in lights, choose outlets that aren’t already occupied by devices and other electronics. If need be, unplug appliances like televisions and devices while lights are on and plugged in.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off.

CHOCOLATE CARDAMOM TRUFFLE CAKE
Digital Strategist 585-944-6453 ChristineW@featuredmedia.com
Serves 10 to 12 Amaretti Base 5 ounces amaretti 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 5 tablespoons sugar Cardamom Truffle Filling 2 1/3 cups heavy cream 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed 4 tablespoons chocolate liqueur Cardamom Cocoa Sugar 3 green cardamom pods 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes. To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes - this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving. To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Lakeville
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective. ***

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury. Page 31

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

REVISIT LESSER-KNOWN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Christmas celebrants participate in many different traditions year after year, but some may not fully understand the meaning behind such activities. A Christian holiday, Christmas did not originate with all activities centralized to the church. In fact, many of the traditions people hold dear have pagan roots, which were adapted as Christmas celebrations evolved. People who hang mistletoe in doorways may be surprised to learn that this tradition dates back to the ancient Druids. The Druids believed mistletoe possessed mystical powers that brought good luck to the household and warded off evil spirits. Evergreen trees are now associated with Christmas trees, but evergreen boughs were once used to decorate homes during the winter solstice to help people envision the spring to come. Christians often look at evergreen trees as a sign of everlasting life and their relationship with God. However, while many Christmas traditions continue to be an integral part of annual celebrations, there are some customs that have fallen out of favor. Although these traditions may no longer be widely practiced, anyone can revive them and make them part of their holiday celebrations. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Wassailing is a custom that has ancient origins and is not as popular today as it once was. “Wassail” comes from the Ango-Saxon phrase “waes hael,” which means, “good health.” Wassail is a drink made of mulled ale, spices and other ingredients. To go wassailing meant to travel door-to-door singing and offering a drink from a wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. Wassailing has been mentioned in certain Christmas carols, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Largely an English tradition, wassailing was brought to America by British settlers. January 17th, the old Twelfth Night, is the traditional date for wassailing. Although wassailing has largely fallen by the wayside, increased interest in ales and craft brewing may help revitalize this Christmas tradition, which can inspire community spirit. Gifting with fruitcake is another tradition that has been much maligned and does not enjoy the same popularity that it once did. Fruitcake is a cake made with chopped candied fruit, nuts and spices and is occasionally soaked in spirits. Fruitcakes have been enjoyed all over the world, but Americans may never have embraced the Christmas fruitcake tradition as much as those from other countries. However, with the right recipe and an open mind, it may be possible to resurrect the fruitcake tradition once again.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS Introduce a fireplace. Fireplaces were once hot commodities, but that popularity waned in the 1970s and 1980s. Homeowners with chimneys may discover a fireplace was boarded over and the bare bones still exist that can be renovated to bring back character. There also are ventless freestanding units that are quite affordable that can mimic the look of a built-in fireplace.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH
REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS
Application: Correct application of the mulch is essential. Applying too much mulch can adversely affect lawns, plants and soil. In addition, excessive application can cause decay and make lawns and plants more vulnerable to disease. Homeowners uncertain about when and how to apply mulch in the fall can consult with a lawn care professional to devise a plan that ensures their lawns and gardens hold up against winter weather.
Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.
Calling hours were held on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 4-7 PM at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home, 111 Main St. in Geneseo. CAREGIVERS, TAKE CARE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAREGIVING DUTIES FROM OVERWHELMING YOU (NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey.
DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

HOW TO CREATE STRUCTURE AFTER RETIREMENT Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.
