DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Consider relocating. The pandemic forced many companies to transition from in office working to remote working overnight. That trial by fire could have lasting results. A 2020 survey of 317 Chief Financial Officers and leaders in the finance industry found that 74 percent will move at least 5 percent of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions after the pandemic ends. The survey, conducted by Gartner, Inc., also found that nearly one-quarter of respondents will move at least 20 percent of their onsite workers to permanently remote positions. That could make it possible for millions of working professionals to relocate to regions with a lower cost of living than their current towns or cities.

Love in A e Right Places
Finding
BY A M A N DA D U D E K
I
t was the summer of 2018, more than an entire year before the word “pandemic,” became a part of our daily vocabulary. One woman, yours truly, was about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, changing careers to pursue the dream of writing full-time. I expected it to be exciting. I expected it to be challenging, full of new experiences and opportunities. It has been all that and more. What I never expected, however, is how much writing the Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s weekly Hometown Stories would teach me about love. • Take Helen Serafi ne, for example. Helen is the owner of the Angry Rooster Café in Caledonia, a business from which she continuously serves the community around her. Last year alone, she hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for area friends in need. She also created the Little Food Pantry in the alley next to her café where people can come at any time to select or drop off food items. Still, Helen saw more needs to meet.
• In Brockport, the Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), which has served the area since March 2017, became even more essential with the advent of Covid-19. The CHB provides personal hygiene and household cleanliness items to struggling families and individuals while offering prayer for all those who ask. Even when cleaning items became scarce, CHB continued to offer them at their events. In its new home at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, CHB has grown from serving 11 families to now serving approximately 150 families. Providing for one’s neighbors: that is love. • Further south, Tina Markle, founder of Your Centers Dansville, goes above and beyond for those around her. Your Centers Day Respite Program specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Tina is a support for local elderly, disabled, and shut-in individuals, particularly during Covid-19. She personally delivered groceries to many people who could not come out and shop for themselves, often responding to calls from morning until evening. Recently, Tina opened a clothing “store” to help struggling families. She also organized a collection of goods for flooded communities last fall. Giving freely of yourself to those around you: that is love.
A gift tree, offered by Helen during the holidays, presented neighbors with the opportunity to play Santa Claus to others during the recent holiday season. Helen has also established (and continues to support) a “coat tree” as well as a container of winter wear such as hats, scarves, and gloves in front of her restaurant. As her sister, Mary Serafi ne put it, “If someone needs something, she is there. They don’t have to ask; she just does it.” Serving those in need: that is love. • Further west in Batavia, meet Senior Wishes. Th is organization serves a vulnerable and too often forgotten segment of our population: our elderly friends, family, and neighbors. According to Wendy Miller Backman, Senior Wishes Executive Director, “Senior Wishes was created to recognize that our aging seniors still have things they want to do, places they want to go, or people they want to see. We transform those dreams into a reality.” Senior Wishes has granted many hundreds of requests. For Leonard, an 81-year old Army Veteran who hasn’t been on a boat in 20 years, a Senior Wish meant one more time holding a fishing pole in his hand and feeling the lake breezes on his face. For Charles, a WWII Army Veteran who had wanted to see his cousin in Oakland, CA for some time, a Senior Wish meant a very special reunion after 10 years apart. Finally, for 89-year-old WWII Veteran Marco, who has been a fan of the L.A. Dodgers for as long as he can remember, a Senior Wish meant a trip to Cleveland to watch his beloved Dodgers play the Indians. Caring for our elderly: that is love.

• Sometimes, love is so powerful, it creates a miracle. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes School of Avon from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” Principal Jensen explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “The community rallied around our school,” Jensen said. “Our drive encouraged others to be ‘a light in the darkness…’ they lit up our sky!” Preserving local treasures like St. Agnes School: that is love. These represent only a handful of the stories that have poured out from across our region and into our pages over the past three years. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to recognize that our communities are fi lled to overflowing with generous people and organizations. Love may not always make the news, but it makes our towns incredible places to be.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. Dale Kriedemann
July 10, 1951-January 21, 2022 "May there be comfort in knowing that someone so special will never be forgotten" - Julie Hebert
On behalf of Dale Kriedemann's family, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to all of those who have reached out to us during this incredibly difficult time. The cards, meals, kind words, and acknowledgments were truly a testament to the life he lived and the lives he touched.
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.
With sincere gratitude, Mary Kriedemann and Family

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
Here when you need us with care and expertise
The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Training Your Cat May Save Its Life DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it possible to teach a cat to come when you call? I have a 2-year-old gray cat, Billy, who sometimes gets past my feet and runs out the door. I worry that he will get run over by a car or attacked by a coyote. He will look at me when I call, but that is it. -- Kelly in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR KELLY: You can teach cats to respond to certain commands, and calling them is one of those commands. I know that Billy can learn to do it, because he clearly recognizes your voice. He just doesn’t see the value in returning to you right away. So it’s important to help Billy “see” the value in returning when you call! You do this through training that uses positive reinforcement -- a favorite treat or food. Here’s how: * Come up with a noise that you can make just before Billy gets a treat or dinner. A whistle, a clucking noise, even a little song. * Just before you open his can of food or treat bag, make that noise. Do it at every feeding and treat time. * Set aside five minutes, twice a day, for reinforcement training. * During training, make the noise, wait for Billy to respond, then give him a treat. Back up a couple of feet and repeat. * Gradually increase the distance during each session until Billy comes running when you call. Once Billy associates that specific noise with a reward, he’ll come back every time you call. Make sure to always reward him when he comes, even if it’s just lots of praise. He’ll be far less likely to stay out if he escapes, and you’ll have much greater peace of mind. You can learn this technique: https://www.rd.com/list/how-totrain-a-cat/. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like gymnastics or pushups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weighttraining programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bone-strengthening exercises.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 35-year-old white male who was a drug addict from the age of 14 until 32. You name it, I took it. About three years ago, I quit drugs and have lived a healthy lifestyle since. I do not drink alcohol, and I smoke one or two cigarettes a day. Three years ago, I was tested for hepatitis and was told the results were negative. About two weeks ago, I was tested and found to have hepatitis C. The results were “HCV RNA Quantitative real time PCR 8010 (high) and log 3.90 (high).” These results were given to me by a nurse without explanation other than to see a specialist. Further physician visits were denied by my insurance. I have no idea what this means, or what I need to do. I have no symptoms or discomfort at this time. What happens if this condition goes untreated? -- Anon. ANSWER: First of all, congratulations on quitting almost everything. That was the best thing you could have done for your health. Now you have to deal with a complication of drug use, particularly injection drug use: hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a slow-acting virus that affects the liver. The course of hepatitis C is variable. Some people have a very aggressive virus, which without treatment can cause permanent liver damage, ultimately leading to cirrhosis and sometimes cancer of the liver. Others have a much more benign course with no evidence of liver damage, even after many years with the virus. Your viral load, a measure of how much virus is in the blood, is fairly low. However, you absolutely should still go see a specialist. This is usually a hepatologist or infectious disease doctor, who has special expertise in treating hepatitis C. They will do additional blood testing, and probably a noninvasive scan of the liver to look for fibrosis, to determine whether there has been damage and the urgency of treatment. Treatment for hepatitis C is so good now (97% or more effective) and the side effects of the new drugs are so mild that most experts treat someone with even very benign disease. Treatment courses are sometimes shorter for people with mild disease and without scarring of the liver. Your insurance company is absolutely in the wrong to deny a visit with the specialist, and that decision needs to be appealed, preferably by your primary care doctor. In the meantime, continue to avoid alcohol, and do not take more than six regular strength (or four extra strength) Tylenol a day. You also should be sure to have immunizations to hepatitis A and B, if you are not already immune.

S E V RA Hope for Humanity I want to give a shout out to a very special citizen that helped me in a dire time of need! This Friday morning after the dump of good ol’ Rochester snow, my car got stuck at the end of my drive way! I panicked because I had to get my prescription at Wegmans. While I was rocking my car back and forth, a friendly knock was heard on my window! There was a young man dressed in what appeared to be orange fur, cat like ears, and a beard. He jokingly said "Never fear! Snarf Maxx is here!" and he held up a shovel! As I sat in my warm car, he began shoveling the snow beneath my tires! And he wasn't bothered or distressed! He just began singing, "I'm the best!" and kept at it! He looked weird with his fur clothes, but good people are good people! No matter what they look like! Then he walked to the front of my car and told me to go in reverse and I was out! He waved goodbye and said "Enjoy the Wonderland!" This is a lesson to us all! Bless you Snarf Maxx! You are the best! Auto Help This past Saturday (2/5) driving was already an adventure given the recent big snowstorm and temperatures in the teens. Then, after shopping, our adventure factor really increased when we discovered that our car battery had died. Luckily, we were able to purchase a new one just a few doors down in the same Geneseo plaza at an Auto Plus Auto Parts Store. Mark at Auto Plus generously lent us his tool kit so we could complete the old/new battery swap. Many thanks for being there when we needed you! - The Bs
Common Concerns A couple of weeks ago a reader wrote about their frustration that 42% of survey respondents were unconcerned about climate change. Most of us want our lives back and are more concerned with getting Covid behind us. The volcanic eruption in Tonga will effect the climate in one day. Earth's climate has continually changed through the millennia. There is historical evidence of this. Most us are for innovations that will improve everyone's lives. The climate change New Green Deal makes the rich richer. I will believe these politicians are serious when I see wind and solar farms in view of the playgrounds of the wealthy. Currently, only the rural areas they don't see are marred by these eyesores. I love the planet. Let's get some real innovations all engineered in the USA.
We have Control To the person who claims that we cannot control the environment, here's a small list of the human impact on the environment that we can control: Not dumping millions of tons of oil into the ocean every time an oil rig bursts. Smokers actually throwing away their butts every time they are done so that birds do not use them as nesting material. Not flushing medicine down the toilet so that pharmaceuticals do not end up in our water. How about the amount of microplastic that is in the ocean that is currently being eaten by us because we eat things that eat the microplastic? Pretty sure we have control over that. UNIQUE WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungeejumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO Makes 4 servings 4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick) 2 tablespoons olive oil Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below) 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
In addition to ½ pans that we already offer, we will also have: • ½ pan of chicken wing dip with chips $35 • ½ pan of stuffed mushrooms (about 25 pieces) – sausage or seafood stuffed $40 • ½ pan of arancini – chicken wing dip stuffed or mac-n-cheese stuffed $40
1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is a Part B Premium Cutback Coming? By now we know just how much our Social Security checks are going to be for this year, after the deductions for Part B. The average dollar increase is $92 per month for singles. The Part B deduction has gone up $21.60, mostly due to the price of the new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, for a total of $170 per month. The drug costs $56,000 per patient per year. And we’re all going to pay for it, whether we need it or not. The news now is that the price of that drug has been cut in half, to $28,200 per year, after pressure was brought to bear on the manufacturer when it was revealed that Medicare might not pay for it at all. Additional pressure came from doctors who were suspicious the drug didn’t actually work and who wanted their own tests run on it. Since it must be given via IV in the hospital or doctor’s office, it falls under Part B instead of the Part D drug plan. Hot off the press is a proposal that Medicare will cover the drug -but only for those in randomized controlled clinical trials that will settle once and for all the question about whether the drug actually works. They’ll likely have a decision on that proposal in April. And what of our Part B costs, given the lowered cost of Aduhelm? Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra ordered Medicare to look again at the premium we’re being charged for 2022. There is the smallest chance it might be lowered, which has never been done before. Last year it was estimated that our Part B premium would be $158.50 this year. If that $170 is cut back to that amount, it would net us an extra $11.50 per month. What shall we spend it on? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

REAL ESTATE SECTION
FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Jason P. Klemmer January 27, 2022 Avon, NY: At age 43, Jason passed away unexpectedly on January 27, 2022 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He was born in Rochester NY on May 17, 1978 to parents, Paul and Patricia (Halpin) Klemmer. He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Ann “Patty” Klemmer in 2017 and grandparents, Theodore and Marie Halpin & Allan and Vera Klemmer, and his cousin, Matt Halpin. Survived by his beloved son, Liam Klemmer; father, Paul Klemmer; and sister, Erika Edwards (Kyle); nephews, Cole and Grayson Towery and Henry Edwards. Also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends including Jamie Yates. Jason was a beloved member of the Avon Community with a work ethic and passion for friends and family that brought tremendous joy to all he touched. Jason worked at his family business, Dugan Creek Lumber, where he and his Dad, Sister, Dusty Preston and crew built it into a Western New York timber powerhouse. Jason also had a second business, LivCo Tree company, that he operated with his close friend Matt Sattora. Jason built a brotherhood out of cousins and friends who adored him. His cousins Josh, Andy, Lizzy, Lauren, and Teddy had an inseparable bond that all are grateful for. Jason’s ability to bring people together and celebrate the success of his friends and family brought great joy to all. Jason had a gift in generating great political and though- invoking conversation that left all in admiration of his wit and charm. Jason was passionate about the outdoors, to include family trips to Canada, hunting, fishing, and priceless time with his family at their cabin on the family farm and cottage on Conesus Lake. By far Jason’s greatest joy was spending time with his son, Liam. Family and friends may call on Friday, February 11th, from 3-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Livonia, NY. Jason’s funeral Mass will be held at 1pm on Saturday, February 12th, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 95 Prospect Street, Avon, NY. Burial will follow at Oatka Cemetery, Scottsville, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to his son Liam Klemmer, C/O Erika Edwards, 327 West River Road, Caledonia, NY 14423. Gary was born in Nunda, where he attended school. He lived in Buffalo, Mt. Morris, Caledonia, for 20 years, and then moved to Lakeville. Gary will be missed by his family and friends. A Celebration of Gary’s life is being planned for a future date. To share a memory or leave a condolence please visit alhartfuneralhome.com
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.
Nancy B. Rider (Briggs) February 1, 2022 Livonia: At age 81, Nancy passed on February 1, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She was born on March 29, 1940 in Warsaw, NY to the late Raymond and Katharyn (Walker) Briggs. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her first husband, Douglas Welch and her brother, John Briggs. Survived by her husband, Christopher Rider; her daughter, Sarah (Thomas) Lauder of Plantation, FL; and granddaughters, Katharyn and Madilene Lauder. Nancy is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Having earned an undergraduate degree at Wilson College and her master’s degree from Alfred University, Nancy’s career spanned 35 years teaching math at Honeoye Central School. Nancy was quick to volunteer her time and resources to those in need, whether giving her time to hospice patients at Teresa House, serving in various capacities at St. Michael’s Church in Geneseo or coming to the aid of family, friends or critters. Wherever she saw the need, she gave generously. Throughout her life, she was an enthusiastic lover of the outdoors and of all of its plants and creatures. Her devotion to animals was well recognized from nurturing ill or orphaned wildlife as a rehabilitator or simply taking in another stray cat. Nancy will be remembered for her quick witted, often whimsical sense of humor, brilliant smile and “gift of gab.” Her zeal for life was infectious and she lived her life in her “uniquely Nancy” way. We are grateful for the many unforgettable ways that her life touched and joined ours. A private graveside service will be held in the future at Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the SusieQ Dog ResQ, PO Box 236, Conesus, NY 14435 or the Begin Again Horse Rescue, PO Box 28, Honeoye, NY 14471. “The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up…” ~ J. M. Power What a dreary world it would be if we had no dreams of the things to which we aspire. It is our dreams that shape our goals. We imagine the situations that would make us happy, then direct our efforts toward making those dreams come true. The important thing is that we recognize that achievement is a two part program. First, we dream of the goals we desire. Then we work as hard as we can to make those dreams come true. Unless we wake up and put part two into effect, our dreams are worthless. Our years of experience enables us to provide funerals that are beautiful as well as comforting. You can safely place your trust in us.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Shake it out or pop it into the wash when needed. * If you have lots of outdoor or feral cats in your area, here is some good advice, given to me by my grandmother: Start your car with a bang -- on the hood, that is. When the overnight temperature dips, cats know to find someplace that is wind-shielded and off the ground, and sometimes that means they will climb up into your engine area to hunker down. If your car starts while they’re there, they can be hurt or even killed. DID YOU KNOW? Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. American Filtration Technologies, Inc. 100 Thruway Park Drive W. Henrietta, NY 14586 HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.
