HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Regulates blood sugar: The combination of fructose and glucose in honey may help the body regulate its blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial to those with diabetes. Certain types of honey also may have a lower hypoglycemic index, which means they don’t cause a dramatic shift in blood sugar, according to the food and health resource Real Food for Life.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

585-802-1544 Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. The National Association of Realtors says homeowners get about 73 percent of their replacement window investment back when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the home. It’s important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the divided light pattern (the number of panes in each window) with the original windows.

nurse, and tells me that when getting blood tests, it is not necessary to fast eight to 12 hours even though my doctor says to do so. Four hours is enough, she claims. Is this true, or is my daughter trying to be a doctor, if you know what I mean? --- L.C. ANSWER: I probably agree with your daughter the nurse more than I do with your doctor in this case. Most routine blood testing does not require fasting. There is controversy about whether cholesterol testing is best done fasting or not: Most recent evidence suggests that fasting is not necessary. However, many physicians still continue to use fasting levels, as that is what they are used to. Nonfasting numbers may reflect the true state of risk to the arteries more so than fasting levels. A few seldom-ordered tests, such as insulin levels, may need to be drawn precisely a certain period of time after feeding to be able to interpret them. In most cases, your daughter is probably right that prolonged fasting is unnecessary. I still recommend following your doctor’s orders. Your daughter is providing you with up-to-date medical knowledge. Any nurse or doctor should do the same. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it true that all orange juice is dangerous except organic? I heard on a radio show something about food’s having been contaminated by Roundup. The man said, “It’s in our orange juice.” It was said (I think) that only organic was safe. What do you think about this orange juice issue? -- J.J.V.S. ANSWER: I read the report showing that all orange juice brands tested positive for glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide, but one that is never applied to trees, in organic or conventional farming. The levels in the report, which was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, are extremely low, 3 to 17 parts per billion. The Environmental Protection Agency allowable level in citrus fruit is 500 parts per billion. The risk from glyphosate in orange juice is negligible. I don’t recommend large amounts of any type of fruit juice due to sugar content, which is a bigger threat than glyphosate, in my opinion. Stick to a glass a day. ***

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH
! " # $$ $ % ! #
Wild salmon may have greater nutritional value than farmed salmon thanks to the more diversified diet consumed by wild salmon.
Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.
INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Beware of Ice The local television weather guy made an announcement recently that was, I think, meant to be uplifting. He said, “And winter is now half over!” Instead, I took it the other way: We still have half of this winter to get through. My main complaint this year is ... ice. It’s sneaky, it’s everywhere, it’s apparently invisible in the right circumstances, and yes, it’s slick. There I was, hauling a load of groceries out of the back of the car, having picked them up curbside from the store and arriving home after dark. One of the bags had fallen over and spilled its contents, requiring me to bend over and lean forward at the same time to retrieve the items that had rolled. Unbeknownst to me, my foot was on a piece of ice. I did not fall, but I did twist my leg in a way that legs are not meant to be twisted. Within an hour the pain hit. By Day 3 I was wondering if I’d broken something. Day 4 was a bit better, and I knew I was on the mend ... if only I could better plan my trips up and out of the recliner to fetch something instead of making multiple trips through the house for Kindle, water bottle, TV remote and more. Worse, I suppose, was that the cat was upset that she wasn’t allowed on my lap during those days. She sat, with a hurt expression, across the room from me for four days. I think there are multiple lessons to be learned from my brief foray into pain and incapacity, but the most important one is this: Schedule curbside grocery pickup for daylight hours. Don’t arrive home in the dark in the winter if there’s the slightest chance of ice. It will find you. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE IMPACT Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review. Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to offer positive feedback. Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services. Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect. Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an effort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased. Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

From Webster to Africa & Beyond BY DP DUNN
R
ich Comins of Webster, NY, is a quiet man with salt and pepper hair and a twinkle in his eye. He has made friends and changed lives on every continent, except perhaps Antarctica. Rich is a small but mighty link in a chain of Rotarians that deliver ‘mobility devices’ all around the world. What’s a mobility device? Examples include crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, leg braces, baby joggers and strollers, bike strollers, and prosthetic limbs. Rich collects these items for distribution overseas, at no cost to the recipient, through an organization called Crutches 4 Africa, whose mission is to “Collect, ship and distribute mobility devices.” Now if you’ve visited Hegedorn’s Market in Webster, you might have noticed a large plastic barrel near the store’s main entrance. On that barrel is a sign “CRUTCHES 4 AFRICA.” Maybe you’ve seen a couple of pairs of crutches, or a walker or two in the bin, ready to travel. Here’s their story. The whole Crutches 4 Africa operation was started by David Talbot of Boulder, Colorado. Talbot endured polio as a child. He recovered, after surgery and much rehabilitation and exercise. Although he became an athlete in high school and college, he always remembered that painful illness. Dave traveled internationally, and as he traveled, he realized, as many travelers do, that Americans enjoyed so much. It’s scandalous what we throw away. Dave saw a need, especially in Africa, and took action to make a difference. Medical mobility equipment was, and continues to be, in great demand to improve the lives of so many people with temporary or lifelong disabilities as well as many victims of accidents or war or illness. In 2018, Rich Comins attended an International Rotary conference in Toronto. Rich and Talbot met, and a series of conversations ensued. The next thing you know, as Rich tells the story, “Phil Smith visited the Webster chapter and presented an informational program about Crutches 4 Africa. The Ontario and Walworth clubs had already begun because of the discussion between Mark Wyse and myself in Toronto. I later presented to the Greece Rotary where Bill & Helen Gormont joined in the cause.” All agreed this was a worthwhile project. They began collecting, storing, and shipping a wide array of mobility devices all around the world. In addition to the African continent, equipment has now been shipped to Mexico and Mongolia, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thailand, Guatemala, and even Christmas Island. Merry Christmas, Christmas Islanders!
charge.” How many? “Over 171,000 items shipped (and lives changed)!” according to their website. When winter releases her icy grip, and shipping containers become available (right now, they’re at a premium), three containers worth are ready to go. “Hopefully we’ll make shipments this April, May, and June,” said Rich. Rich also passed along the following tips for those wishing to donate: 1. Don’t toss; DONATE, please! Your donation will change a life. Crutches 4 Africa helps children like 2. “Used but Usable” this young boy stay mobile! equipment only please; minor repairs are OK. 3. No electric scooters, please. The infrastructure elsewhere is not what we have at home. 4. Free pick up is available for larger donations of equipment. DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE.
2606 Lakeville Rd. (Rt. 15) E. Avon.... 585-226-6120
In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers.
Est. 1991
The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall.
Call or stop by for all your tire/tube needs! Large Inventory
If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall.
Snow and all season tires available!
TIRES ARE OUR BUSINESS!
To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. AUTOMOTIVE

S E V RA Supporting LVOY Sincere thanks to everyone who came out for Literacy Volunteers Ontario + Yates 20th Annual Adult Spelling Bee! Teams, sponsors, and donors stepped up on Feb 6th for a fun event to support services for adults from Ontario and Yates Counties who receive literacy tutoring, help with English, and assistance preparing for a high school equivalency test. Thank you! Good People in Genesee County On February 14th in the Batavia Walmart, I was reminded that there are still good people. I was doing a bit of extra shopping. When I got in line to check out, I noticed a young man with only a few items versus my pretty full cart. I stated he could go ahead of me. He replied, "Thank you" and explained he had been working crazy overtime and just wanted to get a few items to surprise his woman. In the meantime, a woman with a little one in tow, got in line behind me with literally three items. I stated for her to go ahead of me as it was going to be a bit for me to unload my cart. As she was placing her three items on the conveyor belt, the young man was finishing his order. As he was leaving, he stated to the cashier "Give that $40.00 I have coming back to that woman right there." That woman was me! I expressed my thanks as I was not expecting that. So, as it says "One good turn deserves another. "It definitely applies here. Blessings are everywhere! Help During a White Out This is for the kind couple in the red pickup who led me out of a terrible white-out on River Rd. on Feb. 19th. I was in desperate need of help, so I prayed, and God sent you! You truly represent the goodness in all of us, and I hope the kindness you showed me will come back to you. I will always be grateful that you came along that day.
Choose One! You can’t have it both ways! So you’re saving the environment by not having plastic bags used? Smart choice! Okay instead use paper bags. Wait. You have to cut down trees for paper, but you don’t want that either. So now what? By the way California doesn’t ban plastic bags! So, now you go to the store in your half plastic car to buy your milk in a plastic jug. Don’t forget the bread in a plastic bag. Crackers, cereal, cookies are also in what? You guessed it: plastic. People think as long as it’s not in my backyard; I’m saving the world! Reality check: you are the problem. Uncommon Clarity The persons who posted “Common Concerns” and “We have Control” both made good points. First, we have to stop denying global warming - It’s happening. But its main cause is the planet’s actions (known as “Precession of the Equinoxes”) in which the earth moves from hot to cold and back again every 26,000 years. Has industrialization accelerated the warming? Probably. And there are things we can do, like reducing emissions and conserving energy. Windmills and solar panels may be unsightly to some, but oil rigs, pipelines, refineries, and power plants are far more unsightly, and add to our pollution. There should not be any plastic in our lakes, oceans, or other water ways. We can stop throwing our garbage onto the roadside. We can use paper wherever possible instead of plastic. These are things over which we have control. None of us is willing to give up electricity, or our cars (especially in a rural area), so we have to work to minimize our energy usage. Disappointed I am tired of trying to give my money to the local restaurant businesses around me. Every time I call, I’m told they’re out of this or that. I’m fully aware that Covid has affected every aspect of our lives, and the restaurant industry is no exception, but it’s been 2+ years. Adapt, whether it be by paying more for new hires or getting a vendor that will supply your ingredients. I grow weary of these excuses. I don’t want to go to a fast food place. Also, you’re [foolish] for thinking the environment doesn’t matter. Global warming is not fake news.

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering. Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them. Don’t forget fun. Young children may be more likely to embrace volunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered. Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning. Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DAY TRIPS SENIORS CAN ENJOY Wine tasting: A recent study from Wine & Vines magazine said there are 8,391 wineries in North America, and that number is on the rise. One is likely to find a winery to visit and sample the wares close to home. Make a day of it by bringing a picnic lunch.

Pets Keep Owners Fit and Healthy DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? -- Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla. DEAR JOEL: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life. So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people. But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more than pet-less people -- especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks. Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities. Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine. An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them. If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

GARDEN CEMETERIES As Londoners continued to run out of space to bury their dead by the mid-nineteenth century, town planners and architects turned toward more rural areas for additional space. In these new spaces, the concept of “garden cemeteries” was born, which combined sweeping roads for carriages, smaller paths for strolling, and carefully planned landscaping to create a private, landscaped park with a central chapel. Thirty years later, a more practical approach to cemetery layout utilized a more efficient grid-like layout, which further promoted the idea of a cemetery as an educational, contemplative, and dignified environment that met the Victorian standards of the age. After World War I, the ravages of war forced the English to switch to more understated design. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. To learn more, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please feel welcome to visit our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Graveyards are for the living, not the dead.” ~ Heather Brewer

The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Feb. 28, 1993, in Waco, Texas, federal agents launch an unsuccessful raid against the Branch Davidian compound as part of an investigation into illegal possession of firearms and explosives by the Christian cult. On April 18, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno approved a tear-gas grenade assault on the compound. A fire erupted and at least 80 people died.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Snow will better slide off a shovel that has been sprayed with furniture polish.” -- T.L. in Minnesota * Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. * To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your windowpane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water. * “If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over. In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleachbased cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. That should help.” -- E.T. in Michigan * Cut your kitchen sponge in half, or even thirds. You can clean just as well with a smaller sponge, and you will extend its life, saving you money. A smaller sponge dries out more quickly, too.
