NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Using reclaimed timber when building or renovating a home benefits the environment in various ways. According to GreenBusinessWatch. org, building and renovating with reclaimed timber helps to preserve forests by greatly reducing the need to cut down trees. In addition, when using reclaimed timber to build or renovate a home, contractors and homeowners tend to use locally sourced reclaimed wood, reducing the need to transport wood from afar to complete the projects. That reduced reliance on transportation reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Processing reclaimed timber is often less taxing on the environment than processing virgin wood. However, reclaimed timber may provide more than just environmental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full pric e is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on w hich time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buy certain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purc hase c ertain items. Consumers w ho take advantage of sales offered at the start of the new year can save substantial amounts of money. Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on items for themselves.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

typical atrial flutter two years ago, but I haven’t had any symptoms that I am aware of. I don’t have a history of heart problems. My heart rate was 117 bpm while experiencing atrial flutter. My cardiologist recommended an ablation, as that can be curative. He specializes in electrophysiology. The ablation was successful, and my heart rate was in the low 60s afterward. Six months ago, atrial fibrillation (AFib) showed up, but again, there weren’t any real symptoms for me. My heart rate is nice and low, and I never really feel any problems ... perhaps some fatigue. But at 67, I can’t always distinguish this from the feeling of getting older. I’m on Xarelto and a low dose of carvedilol. My blood pressure is good. Is it worth having an ablation of the pulmonary veins to try and stop AFib? Or is it better to just live with an irregular heartbeat? Apparently, it’s best to have an ablation sooner rather than later, so I’ll need to decide as soon as possible. -- D.S. ANSWER: Atrial flutter is an abnormally fast heart rhythm that starts in one of the top chambers of the heart, usually the right atrium. The heart rate in the atria is very fast, typically 240-300 bpm, which is faster than any adult heart can beat. It is common that every other impulse in the atria gets transmitted to the ventricle, so a pulse rate in the range of 120-150 bpm would be typical. Catheter ablation prevents the progression of the fast impulse to the rest of the heart, and it is successful 65% to 100% of the time in various studies. Unfortunately, studies have also shown that somewhere between 7% and 44% of those who had a successful catheter ablation for atrial flutter will later have a recurrence -- or more commonly develop AFib. This is called a chaotic arrythmia and can cause a fast heart rate, but more importantly, the lack of coordinated heart contractions in the atria can predispose people to the development of a clot in the atrium. The clot can then float downstream where it can lodge and cause damage, specifically a stroke. Each year, a percentage of 5% of people with AFib will develop a stroke without treatment. Treatment is designed to relieve symptoms and reduce stroke risk -- your cardiologist has already achieved both of these aims pretty well. The carvedilol is a beta blocker that helps keep the heart rate under control, and Xarelto is effective at reducing stroke risk. In my opinion, there isn’t a need to consider another treatment like an ablation, which has a small but real potential for serious side effects. In fact, it is not 100% effective; about 70% to 75% of patients are symptom-free a year after the procedure. Many people need to continue anticoagulants like Xarelto even after a successful catheter ablation. I recommend ablation for people who cannot tolerate medication treatment for their symptoms.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing roughly six million people each year. The WHO notes that more than five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. While many in the United States may understand the threat that smoking poses to their overall health, the WHO notes that studies indicate knowledge about the specific health risks of tobacco use is not widespread. A 2009 survey of smokers in China found that less than 40 percent of smokers knew that smoking tobacco causes coronary heart disease, while only 27 percent were aware of the link between smoking and stroke. It’s also important that smokers recognize that cigarettes once characterized as “light” or “low tar” are not healthier than more traditional cigarettes. While the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of such terms in cigarette sales within the United States, smokers traveling or living overseas should be mindful that other countries may not operate under such restrictions. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that there is no proof that cigarettes sold as “all natural” and marketed as having no chemicals or additives are any safer than traditional cigarettes and that the best way for men, women and children to avoid the dangers of tobacco is to never smoke or to quit immediately.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

HOW TO FIND A CAR THAT FITS YOUR BUDGET

Hunting for parts for your vehicle?

Check with different lenders - The Federal Reserve increased interest rates in the middle of 2022 and it initially planned to increase rates a few more times throughout the year. People, particularly those who do not have the best credit, can do themselves a favor and shop around at different banks for the best loan rates - the loan may be less costly than what’s offered through the dealership. Also, certified pre-owned vehicles tend to come with promotional interest rates that are lower than the average APR, which makes them a viable alternative.

These accidents most often occur when roadways are wet, snowy or icy. Yet, winter driving is not the only seasonal hazard.

While full details of her military service and personal life remain unclear, the Avon Preservation & Historical Society did some digging a few years ago, and with the help of Phillips’ family, have discovered more information. While other young women from Livingston County had enlisted by then, 22-year-old Phillips was the first African American woman. She headed to Des Moines, IA from Rochester in March 1943, as part of a small contingent of Black women from this region. According to Livingston County Historian, Holly Watson in the February and May 2020 issues of the AP&HS Newsletter, African American women enlisted for various reasons similar to men and white women at the time, including family military legacy and general patriotism, but African American women may have also sought the equality the WAAC claimed to provide. Notably, segregation continued in barracks and work responsibilities. Massachusetts Representative Edith Rogers introduced a bill to create the WAAC in 1941, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor propelled the bill into law in 1942. Women could finally serve in the Army in noncombat positions other than as nurses. According to the law, servicewomen received official status and salary, but because the WAAC was considered a supplement, they did not provide full benefits and protections until the “Auxiliary” designation was dropped in July 1943 and women in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) were entitled to Army benefits as male soldiers were. To allow men to enter combat, WACs relieved men of support responsibilities such as clerical, cooking, driving, and medical positions. Thousands of WACs took administrative assignments, though some were selected for special positions, such as air-traffic control and mechanics. Many remained stateside, but some served overseas in North Africa, Europe, and Asia throughout the war. Although many Black Americans joined the war effort, the Army was segregated and instituted a limit on African American enlistees to ten percent of those inducted, to correspond to the national population percentage. During basic training, Black WACs participated in segregated drills, ate in separate mess halls, and retired to segregated barracks. Officer candidates and those attending technical schools were integrated during training but typically were segregated in field assignments.

In July 1943, Auxiliary First Class Phillips (equivalent to Private First Class) was promoted to Technical Sergeant at Fort Dix, New Jersey. According to Watson, the WAAC was about to officially become the WAC, so this rank would have now matched men’s ranks in the Army. However, she was not eligible to serve overseas because she was Black. WACs of color were eager to serve in the same capacity as their white peers, but Black units were not allowed until January 1945.

According to Watson, records suggest Tech. Sgt. Phillips remained stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., likely serving in a segregated Army hospital, until her honorable discharge in December 1943. Returning to civilian life in Rochester, Phillips married Leslie L. Hedman, potentially a Jamaican native, and had eight children. According to Phillips’ descendants, Phillips worked as an LPN at the Rochester Psychiatric Hospital for many years. She represented her Rochester neighborhood at the historic 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. According to the family, Phillips’ encouragement and influence led one daughter to serve in the Army for 18 years and a son to join the Navy. Another daughter became an LPN. As Watson declares, Technical Sergeant Phillips’ story is a historic one. As the first woman of color to enlist from Livingston County, she challenged stereotypes and demonstrated exceptional courage, breaking barriers in the realm of skilled military service for women, especially Black women.

Phillips, an enlisted WAC at a rank akin to Private, completed the five-week basic training at Fort Des Moines to learn military rules and customs, perform drills, ceremonies, and perfect administrative and other core skills. She entered the Medical Corps part of the WAAC Service Forces, which entailed further specialized training, which may have been integrated, Watson says.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

2/11/2023 Mom, it has been a year since you left us and we miss you! I look across the street and I can still see you standing there waving at us. Memories I will cherish. Love you, mom! Sweet Pea and Anthony Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up…” ~ J. M. Power What a dreary world it would be if we had no dreams of the things to which we aspire. It is our dreams that shape our goals. We imagine the situations that would make us happy, then direct our efforts toward making those dreams come true. The important thing is that we recognize that achievement is a two part program. First, we dream of the goals we desire. Then we work as hard as we can to make those dreams come true. Unless we wake up and put part two into effect, our dreams are worthless. Our years of experience enables us to provide funerals that are beautiful as well as comforting. You can safely place your trust in us.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Buster, has been scratching under his chin for days, and the skin underneath the fur there is getting raw. What is causing this, and how do I stop the scratching and treat the injured skin? -- David G., Buffalo, New York DEAR DAVID: It’s clear that something is aggravating your cat and causing him to scratch in just one spot. The problem could be dry skin -- not unusual for pets or humans in the middle of winter -- or allergies. It may also be an infection, a parasite (mites or ringworm) or an allergic reaction to fleas. If the area that Buster is scratching is not infected, you can try a few home remedies to try to relieve the itching. Oatmeal, cooked and then cooled, is one option. Plain yogurt is another. And coconut oil may help moisturize and protect the skin. Dab one of these gently onto the itchy area. (Just a very thin coat; don’t pile it on.) Repeat as needed. If fleas are an issue, treat both your cat and your home to reduce and eliminate these little pests. Vacuum carpets thoroughly. Sweep all the corners and underneath furniture to remove dust bunnies, where fleas and their eggs can hide. If these remedies don’t work within a couple of days, or if your cat exhibits signs of infection or illness, contact the veterinarian. They need to take a look and see what exactly is causing the itching. They’ll also have medication on hand to combat the itch (hydrocortisone, for one) and treat infection. If Buster is scratching compulsively, they may put him into an E-collar (aka the “Cone of Shame”) for a few days to let the spot heal fully. (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

By reading the scriptures I am so renewed that all nature seems renewed around me and with me. The sky seems to be a pure, a cooler blue, the trees a deeper green. The whole world is charged with the glory of God and I feel fire and music under my feet. ~Thomas Merton

PLEASE Please don’t sit in your car using a handicap spot waiting for your person. It takes away from those who truly need it. You can drop them off in front of the store and then sit in the front and wait for them. You can see them come out. It’s okay as long as you stay in your car. It’s so hard for me and others truly walking disabled, especially coming out of the store after being on my feet to have to walk any distance whatsoever. And when I see people sitting in the closest handicap spots just upsets me. It’s bad enough we know that there’s people who truly don’t need a handicap spot. I know many of them who do lots of yard work very easily then have a handicap sticker.

Thank you I live in Henrietta and I want to thank the CHS Ambulance crew that helped me Saturday, January 27th around 5:00 PM. I am grateful not only for their knowledge and expertise, but how they treated me. They were both great. Thank you CHS. Thank you Thank you! On Thursday, Feb. 1, I ate lunch at a local restaurant in Clifton Springs. I had soup, sandwich, and coffee -- all delicious. When I asked for the bill, I was told it had been taken care of and I was all set. To whomever paid my bill, thank you! It was very thoughtful and much appreciated!

Restaurants When you are going to post your hours and when you may be closed for specials events on your website, please keep your site accurate. We checked the website shortly before leaving, headed to a local establishment for dinner, just to find that they were closed for a private party. Inconvenient, to say the least.
