HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS

Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

TRICKS TO KEEP FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FRESH

Make fresh cuts in stems: Think back to the last time you purchased a fresh Christmas tree. What is the key to ensuring it gets enough water while on display? You guessed it: making a fresh cut in the trunk of the tree. The same concept applies to floral arrangements. Use a sharp scissor or pruning shears to cut about one inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle.Continue this process every three days or so. The 45-degree angle prevents the stem from squishing during the cut and enables it to absorb more water.

DID YOU KNOW?

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. Whileticksareactivethroughouttheyear, catsaremostlikelytoencounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT CAT REPRODUCTION

While there is still some debate among veterinarians as to the best age at which to spay or neuter cats, the general consensus seems to be the earlier the better, particularly if cats have access to other cats that are not fixed. This can occur as early as age six to eight weeks, while standard spays and neuters occur at five to six months of age. Vets who advocate for spaying before the first heat say it nearly eliminates the risk of mammary cancer, and spayed cats will not develop ovarian and uterine cancers, according to PetMD.

VENT BRIGHTER

As relayed to me:

Smoking areas in parking lots and shopping plazas

On the very busy morning of Sunday, February 18th, at Wegmans Geneseo, an older gentleman’s cashier had rung up his large number of items, and he then discovered that he had forgotten his wallet. As he and the cashier tried to decide what to do, the woman behind him in line handed the cashier her credit card and very, very, generously rescued him. He protested, saying that he lived close by & could easily run home to get his wallet. She refused and just said “Pay it forward.” I’d just like to tell that woman that I have known that man for decades, and he has always been helping others with all kinds of issues, but he was truly surprised, and very grateful, to be on the receiving end that day. I know that he will definitely Pay it Forward.

Everyone smokes in [local] plaza. I walk to the grocery store there almost every day, and there is usually someone standing or sitting someplace smoking. Most employees from [the grocery store] smoke on their breaks and couldn’t care less about the non-smokers like myself who don’t want to smell the smoke. I have to go in the street and almost get run over. Legislation should say “No smoking, vaping, or using tobacco products in all shopping plazas, parking lots, etc.” They are too lax with this issue. The American Cancer Society got involved with [a company] and now they don’t sell cigarettes. However, other stores still sell them, which says it’s okay to smoke. [Another company] has signs in the windows saying “No Smoking,” but inside they sell cigarettes. More should be done.

German War prisoners

The Hometown Story in your January 19th issue reminded me of the experiences we had with German war prisoners. In the early 1940s, my parents contracted with the Heinz Co. to raise tomatoes. My mother, Anna, a German immigrant, and our neighbor’s 20-yr-old daughter drove the truck full of ripe tomatoes to the Hilton facility. My mother did not disclose that she was German when they arrived. As they unloaded the truck, the prisoners commented in German on the attractiveness of the young woman and speculated what she might look like without any clothes. In German, Anna said she would look like any of the girls they had at home. The prisoners were surprised and also happy to hear German. Much discussion followed about where they and she were from in Germany. They were glad the war was over for them and they were in the US rather than Russia. They felt they were treated and cared for quite well but missed family and friends back home.

Well Meaning Efforts with Poor Results

Many local residents are involved in helping feral cat colonies. For those unfamiliar, these people trap feral cats, have them spayed or neutered, and release them back to their colony. Some people provide the colonies with cat food. Their efforts come from their kind and loving hearts. I’ve owned pet cats for 29 years, and I’m ready to take off the rose-colored glasses and admit the feral cat colony concept is not working. Friends directly involved in colony support tell me there are always more cats coming in and restarting the flow of kittens. The constant drain on [humane society]’s resources (and others who offer spaying) is not the best use of funds. Cats are not part of our native ecosystem and the effect on our native bird populations is devastating. Walk outside anywhere and you’ll notice the vast decline in the number of birds. There are many factors against birds, but this is one we can control. This failed experiment needs to be replaced with humane euthanasia for feral cats.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows.

TheDOEalsoadvisesthatshading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapescanreducepreviously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which meanstheywillblocksolarheatin thesummerbutallowsunlightinto the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

SPICY STEAK TAMPICO

4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)

2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)

1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.

3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately. To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

MARCH 19TH – Village Election Republican Trustees Elect Tom Cushing Re-Elect Pat MCCormick

3/10/24

Dear Voters in the Village of Avon,

My name is Deborah Spratt and I am a resident of the Town of Avon. I do not have a vote in the upcoming Village Elections. However, I am clear on the symbiotic relationship between the Town of Avon and the Village of Avon. erefore, I would like to make a recommendation to you, the voters.

I have concerns about several ongoing issues in the Village that impact the Town:

1. Water quality and unexplained water loss. Your Village engineer states it will take 10 million dollars to address the storage tanks, the water loss of 60 million gallons in 2022 and other issues with acquisition and storage.

2. Sewer plant violations. 18 million dollars to address noncompliance with EPA standards.

3. Police department actions, specifically a school resource officer’s payments, how long and who knew. ere were enough questions that federal and state investigators are occurring.

4. e ongoing poor relationship between the East Avon Fire Department and the Avon Fire Department that results in equipment, manpower and assistance issues.

Avon deserves transparency with acknowledgement, accountability and a clear plan of action, not business as usual, in order to continue and sustain growth.

erefore, I ask for your vote for Jim Harrington for Mayor on March 19, 2024.

ank you.

Host a St. Patrick’s Day Party with Style

(Family Features) It may be a celebration in honor of a patron saint of Ireland, but you don’t have to be Irish to join the revelry that marks each St. Patrick’s Day. This year, gather some friends for a party that brings a bit of luck o’ the Irish to all.

Perfect Party Menu

It’s just not a party without a scrumptious spread of eats and drinks, and an occasion like St. Patrick’s Day makes it fun to plan your menu. From green frosted cookies to a green-hued punch, countless options are available. A buffet-style meal allows guests to nibble as they wish and enjoy a wide range of foods.

Be sure to think beyond the food itself and also consider how you can get creative in serving it. For example, a hearty stew might be served in bowls that resemble pots of gold. Or display traditional finger foods, such as slices of cucumber, on a platter in the shape of a shamrock.

Try creating a signature cocktail for the affair using a classic green liquor like Midori, sour apple schnapps or rum, or even a creme de menthe.

A Theme to Celebrate

With so many prominent icons associated with the holiday, decorating is probably one of the easiest aspects of your party planning. There’s no shortage of images that scream St. Patty’s Day: shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold, leprechauns, top hats and more. You might choose just one for your party’s theme or create an everything-is-more ensemble that celebrates all things Irish.

For a more subtle approach, simply think green. Lots and lots of green. From streamers to balloons to photo booth props, if it’s green, it will fit your theme. You can use plants to add greenery in elegant ways, green table and glassware for festive dining and even green-hued lighting for an all-Irish ambiance.

Festive Fun

Sure, the food and drinks are a big part of the party fun, but St. Patrick’s Day also lends itself to some playful party entertainment. A soundtrack with classic Irish tunes is an ideal backdrop. You might invite guests to compete in a limerick writing contest or a scavenger hunt to find prizes like gold-covered chocolate coins and a candy-filled pot of gold.

Find more ideas to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day at eLivingToday.com.

Ken Goold: A Maestro of Music Education and Theater Direction

With a career spanning over three decades in music education and theater direction, Ken Goold’s journey is not just about teaching notes or directing performances; it’s about fostering creativity, building confidence, and instilling a lifelong love for the arts in his students.

Ken’smusicalodysseybeganinAverillPark,NY,wherehespenthis formative years immersed in music, theater, and soccer. His passion formusic, nurturedbydedicatedteachers, ledhimtopursuedegrees in music and education from e University of Rochester and e Eastman School of Music a er initially venturing into Mechanical Engineering in attempts to keep his vocation separate from his love for music.

In his first music teaching job at e Albany Academy, Ken was surrounded by teachers who clearly loved their jobs and were there for the students every day. When he arrived at the Honeoye Falls-Lima School District nine years later, and worked with his next mentor, Mark Borden, for 18 years, he continued to focus on his guiding philosophy of “Quality, Opportunity, and Enjoyment” in every class, every day. Over the past 21 years, Ken has continued that commitment, shaping young minds through music classes, choirs, theater productions, and more.

Rochester Broadway eater League and Broadway, accompanied countless student trips to Broadway and Virginia Beach Music Festival, and worked with students in various capacities on another 30+ productions.

Ken’s teaching philosophy revolves around putting students first, creating a nurturing environment where musical excellence and authenticity flourish. His classrooms buzz with creativity, where students are encouraged to explore, question, and grow both as musicians and individuals. Beyond imparting musical skills, Ken serves as a trusted mentor, offering a listening ear and guidance through life’s ups and downs.

Challenges have peppered Ken’s journey, from the initial transition from engineering to music to the perpetual quest for balance amidst the demands of teaching, family, and personal pursuits. “Balance is important, but Balance is hard,” he says. Yet, through it all, his unwavering dedication and support network have seen him triumph over obstacles, emerging stronger and more passionate about his cra .

For Ken, music isn’t just about scales and rhythms; it’s a gateway to collaboration, confidence, and creativity. rough ensembles and performances, students learn invaluable life skills, from teamwork to public speaking and clear communication, while exploring the boundless depths of artistic expression.

To Ken, “Music is a joy, an outlet, a science, an art, a physical activity, a connection with the past, a view into the future, a way to understand cultures around the world and throughout time. Music has been around since the first people and will be around until the last. Understanding and appreciating music enriches the lives of anyone who experiences it as a creator or a consumer.”

Ken’s latest endeavor, HF-L’s spring production of Mamma Mia! is a testament to his passion for theater and mentorship. Guiding a talented cast and crew through rehearsals and performances, he orchestrates an unforgettable experience where every participant shines. Ken, alongside alumni director, CJ Tomaszewski, their entire creative team, and an amazing score of music by ABBA, ensure Momma Mia! will be a fun, memorable show with incredible music.

As Ken reflects on his career and impact, he hopes to be remembered not only as a music educator and director but as someone who cared deeply and inspired endlessly. His advice to all echoes his life’s ethos: seek balance, take chances, and embrace the beauty of the arts.

And to truly understand the magic of Mamma Mia! and the talent of its performers, Ken extends a heartfelt invitation to the community: come, experience the joy, and feel the music come alive on stage.

DID YOU KNOW?

Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.

· Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh.Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head.

· Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression.

· Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help.

· Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

Many establishments display the familiar Irish tricolour flag on St. Patrick’s Day, and paradegoers may even wave miniature versions of this significant symbol in support of those marching. This instantly recognizable flag has a rich history. Equal parts green, white and orange, the flag was designed to foster peace in the country that had experienced considerable turmoil due to the divide between the country’s Protestant and Catholic residents. The green in the flag represents the Irish Catholics, while the orange represents the Irish Protestants. The white is a symbol of hope for peace between the two factions. Though Ireland established the tricolour as its national flag in 1921, it first appeared much earlier when Irish national Thomas Francis Meagher unfurled it in 1848.

BRAND NEW CONTENT

Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

One Vote DOES Matter

Vote Line 3 on March 19th

On March 19th, Avon village residents have the opportunity to voice their opinion about their village's future and we face many challenges:

Water: Using the Village's annual reports, for the years 2020, 2021, and 2022, our Village has misplaced/lost/wasted over 100 million gallons of water- water we paid for.

Sewer: According to the EPA, our wastewater treatment system has been in violation since October 2020.

Infrastructure: More than sidewalks and official buildings in need of repair, we need a strong operating infrastructure which means returning to a set of fiscal checks and balances that have long been missing. No village wants to make the news because of a lack of oversight.

On March 19th, you have the choice to vote for James Harringtonsomeone who has been attending the village board meetings for months, learning as much as possible about our current situation, and preparing to lead our village towards a stronger tomorrow.

YOUR vote does matter

Please join me in voting for James Harrington

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS

(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes withthechanceof severeweatherandan increaseinfirerisks.AccordingtotheU.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.

“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks:

• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work.

• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.

• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.

• Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family.

• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.

• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.

• Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

• If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequatelywateredandgetridof itafter Christmas or when it gets dry.

Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departmentsacrossthecountryarelooking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members.

“The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.”

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

DID YOU KNOW? The pinnacle of birthday celebrations, if there’s no piñata to break open, is when the birthday cake comes out and party attendees serenade the guest of honor. The song everyone harmonizes to is among the most widely recognized and well-loved tunes in the world. The “birthday song,” also known as “Happy Birthday to You,” is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. The song originally was penned as a classroom greeting song titled “Good Morning to All,” written by sisters Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Both were educators and developed unique teaching strategies to assist students. The song was composed by Mildred and the lyrics were written by Patty to be used in kindergarten classrooms.

It is unclear who changed the lyrics and turned the song into a birthday ditty, as none of the earliest references to the song included credits or copyright notices. Two tales circulate regarding the eventual copyright of the song. One has The Summy Company registering a copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R. R. Forman. The other says Jessica Hill, sister to Mildred and Patty, who was working with publisher Clayton F. Summy Company, copyrighted and published “Happy Birthday toYou” in 1935.Eventually Warner Chappell bought the company that was originally The Summy Company, and argued the birthday song was under copyright until 2030, making performances of the song illegal without paying royalties. However, a federal judge ruled in 2015 that Warner Chappell’s claim to a copyright on the song was not valid. The judge ruled its registration only covered a specific piano version, not the melody and lyrics. Therefore, “Happy Birthday to You” can be sung both privately and publicly without being subject to royalties or other restrictions.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Proton-Pump Inhibitors

Highly Recommended for Barrett’s Esophagus

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired male over 65 and a former occasional cigar smoker. I quit 15 years ago after I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus. I was also a former drinker and quit seven years ago. I regularly completed all the biopsies as required and took my proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) daily as instructed.

This year, I read an article about PPIs contributing to dementia and neuropathy, which I have. My primary care physician suggested that I switch to over-the-counter H2 blockers as a safer approach. I developed an irregular heart rhythm and soaring blood pressure. I was then diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib). My stress test and echocardiogram are normal for my age. I am now on some heavyduty beta blockers, blood thinners and a very expensive rhythmcontrol drug.

A book I recently read written by two top cardiologists stated that long-term use of PPIs is dangerous and can cause AFib, but a recent article published by the National Institute of Health states the opposite. I also read that an irritated esophagus stimulates the esophagus nerve and triggers AFib. I’m confused now.

Because Barrett’s vastly increases my chances for getting a very aggressive cancer, doing nothing is not an option. I have already modified and continue to modify my diet, but that only goes so far. And as I’m sure you are aware of, a stroke caused by AFib is often life-threatening.

My complicated question is, which professional approach would you recommend: PPIs or H2 blockers? Is there a third option? -- B.B.

ANSWER: There is not a definitive answer on whether PPIs, like omeprazole, increase the risk of AFib. Studies are potentially confounded by the fact that people with AFib sometimes think they have stomach problems and may take a PPI, leading to a false association between the PPI and AFib. As you say, there have also been studies that suggest a decreased risk of AFib in people who use PPIs.

In my mind, the increased risk of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus as a result of untreated stomach acid reflux in a person with Barrett’s esophagus is the key in this situation, as Barrett’s is a condition where abnormal lining of the esophagus occurs due to years of acid exposure.

I do not believe over-the-counter H2 blockers, like famotidine (Pepcid), are adequate enough to reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, so I advise patients in your situation to use PPIs, despite their known risks.

The data suggesting a risk of dementia are weak. While there might be a small risk, the risk isn’t high enough to avoid using a PPI in a person with Barrett’s. B12 deficiency is absolutely a risk in people taking long-term PPIs. Low B12 can certainly lead to neuropathy, but both can be prevented and treated by testing for B12 deficiency and by getting supplementation, if needed.

I am very glad to hear you are getting routine endoscopic surveillance and biopsies so that any abnormal growth of the esophagus can be identified and treated promptly.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing roughly six million people each year. The WHO notes that more thanfivemillionofthosedeathsare the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. While many in the United States may understand the threat that smoking poses to their overall health, the WHO notes that studies indicate knowledge about the specifichealthrisksoftobaccouse is not widespread. A 2009 survey of smokers in China found that less than 40 percent of smokers knew that smoking tobacco causes coronary heart disease, while only 27 percent were aware of the link between smoking and stroke. It’s also important that smokers recognize that cigarettes once characterized as “light” or “low tar” are not healthier than more traditional cigarettes. While the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of such terms in cigarette sales within the United States, smokers traveling or living overseas should be mindful that other countries may not operate under such restrictions. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that there is no proof that cigarettes sold as “all natural” and marketed as having no chemicals or additives are any safer than traditional cigarettes and that the best way for men, women and children to avoid the dangers of tobacco is to never smoke or to quit immediately.

Little Leprechauns

1. Use a jar, box, or empty tissue box to build your Leprechaun trap.

2. Decorate your trap using rainbows, shamrocks, stickers, glitter or anything else you think might lure a leprechaun.

3. Create a trapping mechanism at the entry point of your trap. You can angle a stick or straw to prop open a trap door, or drape some felt over the top.

4. Build a ladder leading to your trap’s entry point using pipe cleaners or craft sticks.

5. Deposit some pennies, foil-wrapped coins or lucky charms inside your trap or on top of the felt as bait.

Set your trap on St. Patrick’s Eve before going to bed. If you wake to find a treat in your trap, you caught a leprechaun!

6. Set your trap before going to bed on March 16. Remember, a leprechaun will only visit while you’re sleeping.

7. Check your trap in the morning. Sneaky little leprechauns rarely stay trapped, but if you caught one who escaped, you might find he left behind a treat for you!

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN

Turn off your notifications.According to research from the Business of Apps, the average smartphone user in the United States receives 46 app push notifications each day. The sound of a smartphone notification has become as recognizable as any sound, and the volume of notifications the average users receive in a 24-hour period no doubt contributes heavily to how much time they spend on their phones. Turning off notifications makes it easier to disconnect from devices, and may even make individuals more productive.

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR

Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale.

Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot.

Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person.

Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My new puppy’s training is going very well, and he responds very well to rewards of little treats. I worry about feeding him so many processed, store-bought snacks though. What are some natural or homemade alternatives for treats? -- Maggie T., Nashua, N.H.

A: Many alternative recipes for homemade doggie treats are available on the internet and at the bookstore, but the healthiest ones share many common features. is means that you can find quite a few good recipes out there, or develop a few of your own.

Common ingredients in dog treats are meat protein (either from fresh meats, broths or strained baby foods), whole-grain flours (like wheat, oats, corn or rice), eggs and powdered supplements (like brewer’s yeast or garlic). A variety of flavorings can be added, including peanut butter, sugar or molasses, vanilla, salt, and small amounts of cheese or milk. Dry or instant yeast can be added to biscuit-type recipes, to allow the dough to rise before baking.

A popular training asset is liver treats, which can be made fairly easy and which last about four to five days if stored properly (in an airtight container and refrigerated). Chicken livers, eggs and sweetener are pureed, flour or cornmeal is mixed in (some owners add powdered supplements as well) and the mixture is baked, cooled and sliced into bite-size treats.

Certain foods are never safe for dogs, so don’t use any recipe that contains these ingredients: chocolate, onions, raisins/grapes or macadamia nuts. ey seem like fairly innocent foods, but can cause serious health problems in dogs.

Baking and testing these snacks out on your puppy can be a lot of fun. Remember, you can also share recipes with other dog owners and perhaps find the perfect treat for your companion.
