TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE COMMUTE
Put the cell phone down. Your car is not a mobile office. Cell phones are distracting. Designate your time in the car as “quiet time.” If you must talk on the phone, get a headset -- as now required by many state laws -- so that both your hands remain on the steering wheel.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY WINTER
Snowshoeing: Parents may not know that many retailers sell snowshoes for children. While snowshoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun way for families that like family walks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. Make sure kids are bundled up, paying extra attention to their footwear. Kids will enjoy snowshoeing more if their boots are both comfortable and capable of keeping their feet warm.

HOW TO MAKE OLDER HOMES MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT
Stay on top of your home. Much like older vehicles, older homes require a little extra TLC on the part of homeowners. Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect windows and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Don’t forget to clean gutters and downspouts, removing debris that can add up and lead to water damage that may ultimately compromise the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.

HOW
Add
Many older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation was not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case with older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold growth and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, crawl spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and water pipes. Cover your water heater with an insulated water heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the water.

When
HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Start with your windows. The windows in a home can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their heating and cooling costs. On cold days, pull back curtains so the natural sunlight can come in and warm the house, reducing the need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat. When the weather outside is especially warm, hang blackout curtains to prevent the hot sun from warming rooms and increasing the need for air conditioning. In addition, address any leaks around windows to ensure hot and cold air is not escaping and contributing to excessive energy consumption.

Soundproof Your Home
What’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding which rooms have the least amount of sound resistance.
To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and windows. Take a quick walk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate which ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room where volumes will be blasting on TV’s and stereos. With this information, you should have a good idea of where you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet:
• Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help with the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow down the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home.
• Insulate your walls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors won’t just drive away excess noise, it will also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold months.
• Seal up all cracks and holes around windows and doors, and add double glazed windows to your current glass panes.

CARE FOR TOOLS
PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well.
First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

HOW TO MAKE EXISTING WINDOWS MORE
Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

ANGELS OF MERCY OF ROCHESTER RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING
BY SUZIE WELLS
young women heal and experience freedom to go forward in their lives. ere are women of all ages in our own community that need someone to reach out to them. Perhaps you may know a friend, daughter, mother, or sister that has been challenged with unpleasant circumstances. We certainly do.”
Angels of Mercy’s Butter y Boutique o ers free clothing to women survivors attempting to re-enter the workforce who need casual and business casual clothing. Dressing hundreds of women each year, the Boutique volunteers help women feel upli ed and special, helping develop visitors’ self-esteem and con dence. Angels of Mercy wants every woman to be able to go forward in life and reach positive goals. In 2022, they lled nearly 1,000 orders through 110 agencies.
Angels of Mercy also o ers the Monarca Group, a monthly peer support group for women impacted by trauma, including domestic and community violence and sexual abuse. e group o ers women tools and resources to help facilitate their recovery, fostering healing through the grace of God and empowerment to help break the cycle of violence so many women face.
human tra cking education at schools, churches, hospitals, and other organizations around Rochester.
Founder Mary Jo Gugino Colligan and Human Tra cking Coordinator Lauren VanCott lead the initiative to raise awareness to empower girls and women and hopefully buck the statistics. “Empowering the youth and parents of today is vital,” they say. O entimes, “young girls and boys who have been molested have very low self-esteem and feel they are to blame.” ese educational initiatives teach them the opposite is true, giving youth the tools to be aware of warning signs of abuse and dangerous situations. Schedule a free human tra cking awareness presentation for your organization by calling or emailing the o ce.
Angels of Mercy stresses that whole, con dent women make better choices! e organization helps women and girls achieve freedom, dignity, and restoration. Connecting with Mercy Ministries, Rochester Coalition Against Human Tra cking, and various other organizations, they help women and girls rise above the challenges.
Colligan is herself a survivor of domestic violence in her 20s. When the opioid/heroin crisis and trauma a ected her own daughter, Mary Jo and her husband “propelled into action,” creating this organization to help other women and girls avoid or rise above the trauma. She says, “Angels of Mercy is here to raise women up and help them realize the life purposed for them.”
Perhaps best known for their US-based but worldwide Dress a Girl program, going strong since 2009, Angels of Mercy provides handmade dresses and dolls to girls, and shorts to boys in the United States, India, Cambodia, Guatemala, Uganda, and at least 60 other countries. According to the organization’s website, “Statistics show that these children, dressed in rags and searching for food in public dumps, are perceived to be easy targets that no one will miss if kidnapped into sex tra cking.” Angels of Mercy seeks to help women and girls escape such tragedy.
Angels of Mercy in Rochester was inspired by Mercy Ministries, a residential treatment center, that “o ers unconditional love and helps

* Donkey Kong got his curious moniker because his creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, believed “donkey” meant “stupid” in English and wanted to convey the impression that the character was a “stupid ape.”

* If you have a plastic-bristle broom that is starting to get really ragged and it’s time to replace it, don’t get rid of it. Turn it into a scrub broom. Trim the bristles down to about an inch. You can even cut them at an angle. Then you can use this broom to scrub stubborn spots. The bristles are nice and tight when they are so short.
* Check your windshield wiper blades. Are they smeary? Before you replace them, use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. They might have life left in them yet!
* Still fire season in your neck of the woods? Most of us know not to burn magazine inserts or anything plastic, but did you know that you CAN add some spice to your fire? Save the peel from your citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit -- even lemons and limes) to add to your fire. They burn well, and they smell great!
* “We had a piece of linoleum left over when we replaced the kitchen flooring. It was almost a perfect size to put over our picnic table. We use it for crafts and whenever we don’t want anything to fall through the boards. It stores neatly against the wall behind our outdoor shelves when we aren’t using it!” -- R.
in Minnesota
* If you have a light bulb that has broken off in the socket and you need to get it out to replace it, use needlenose pliers to grab the metal ring and unscrew it. Be sure to turn the light off first! If that doesn’t work, you might be able to use a bar of soap to grab any glass shards sticking out, and unscrew it that way.
* “When I put on my stockings, I put on my dish gloves first. It sounds silly, but I do not have any snags in my stockings, and the grip of the gloves makes them easy to pull up and adjust for a perfect fit.” -- W.M. in New York

All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas.
Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

By remembering healthy eating involves not just the foods they cook, but also how those foods are cooked, home cooks can make their meals that much healthier.
GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND
When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiplesclerosis.
The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinalhealing.
More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY
Dietary fiber: Dietary fiber is found in various fruits and vegetables. The Cleveland Clinic notes that berries like raspberries and blackberries contain significant amounts of dietary fiber. Pears, artichoke hearts and Brussels sprouts are packed with fiber as well. A highfiber diet helps stabilize bowel movements and maintain bowel health, and WebMD notes that studies have found a link between high-fiber diets and a lower risk for colorectal cancer. Studies also have linked fiber-rich foods with heart-friendly outcomes like reduced inflammation and lower cholesterol.

Statins and
Thiazides Acutely Increase Blood Sugar, Risk of Diabetes
DEAR DR. ROACH: My question regards the results of my fasting glucose tests for the past couple of years. I am 81 and weigh around 150 pounds. The medications I am taking concern me, with relevance to the A1C levels of my quarterly blood work. My A1C levels have mostly been near mid-5%; the last showed 6%. Medications relevant to this that I am suspicious of are 100-12.5 mg of losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and 20 mg of simvastatin. I have read that these medications can have an effect of raising blood glucose. My doctor is adamant that this does not exist, but it seems to me that there is a conflict on this. Should I perhaps ask him to change those medications because of my blood sugar? I am concerned about issues with the thiazide and the statin. -- P.R. ANSWER: There isn’t a conflict. You are absolutely right that both simvastatin (like all statins) and HCTZ (like all thiazides) increase blood sugar and the risk of diabetes. The risk, however, is small. For thiazides, the risk of high blood sugar seems tied to potassium levels -- the lower the potassium, the higher the risk of diabetes. Interestingly, the losartan in combination with the HCTZ you are taking tend to raise potassium levels, so that combination may have a lower risk of worsening blood sugar levels than taking HCTZ alone. You are already taking the smallest effective dose of thiazide. The risk of statins seems greater in higher doses and with more potent statins, like atorvastatin and rosuvastatin; however, the risk is still small. About one person in 100 treated with a high-dose intensive statin, such as 40 mg of atorvastatin for five years, would be expected to get diabetes, while a dosage of 20 mg of simvastatin would be expected to have an even lower risk.
The conflict isn’t whether the increased risk exists (it does), but whether the treatments to prevent heart attack and stroke are worth the increased risk. For nearly all people, the benefit of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol under control greatly outweighs the small increased risk of diabetes. Given your normal A1C level, I would say your risk is low, and I do not generally recommend changing treatment based on your concern over blood sugar. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale.
When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME
(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time.
1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.
2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item.
3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.
4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant.
5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is amongthem, considersigningupforadditionalcoverageoptionstoprotect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

Clicker Training Can Help Your Dog Love to Learn
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is the value of training dogs using a clicker? I have tried using a clicker to train my dog Atlas, but he didn’t listen very well. When should I click at him -- when he’s misbehaving? Or when he’s doing something right? And how can he tell? -- John H., Spring eld, Massachusetts
DEAR JOHN: Clicker training, or “mark and reward” training, can seem almost magical in terms of how quickly and enthusiastically a dog learns. But that magic only happens when it’s being done correctly.
Basically, you press the clicker device when your dog does precisely the thing that you are trying to train him to do. And you follow up immediately (like, within a second) with a reward -- usually a little bit of a treat. So, here’s how it is done:
-- Decide on one behavior that you want your dog to learn in your training session. Start with a basic behavior, like “sit,” “come here,” “lie down” or “give paw.”
PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
-- Give Atlas the command. If he doesn’t follow the command, don’t click.
-- As soon as he follows the command, click once and give him a little treat.
-- Repeat the process again and again until he follows the command immediately.
By associating the clicker noise with a command and a reward, Atlas will quickly build a positive association with the command. is works for many types of training, from basic obedience to agility to job-speci c commands. But you start with just one command at a time.
Also, consider working with a trainer, either one on one or in a group training setting. You’ll pick up many training skills quickly. It’s worth the investment.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Shrink ation: Beating em at eir Own Game
“Shrink ation.” at’s a word that’s been in the news lately, and one that we need to pay attention to.
We know prices are increasing on our groceries. We see it every time we look at the price tags on the shelves when we shop, and certainly at the checkout. But shrink ation is a di erent thing and can be harder to spot. Shrink ation is sneaky price increases.
In shrink ation, the prices don’t go up, but what we get comes down. is is impacting most things across grocery stores, including dairy, shampoo, meats, frozen foods, toilet paper, pet food, pastries, candy bars, laundry detergent, sliced cheese, tea bags ... well, everything.
Example: e price of a can of beans stays the same, but we get fewer ounces. Example: e price of a loaf of bread stays the same, but it’s smaller. Same with cereal, which you’ll have noticed when the box sizes changed.
In my case, one particular item (frozen meatballs) at my local store dropped from 64 meatballs to 56 ... fewer for the same money.
Keep an eye on the unit pricing on the tag on the grocery store shelf. Yes, it’s in tiny print (which is one reason to carry a small magnifying glass at all times), but the numbers will tell you the unit price per uid ounce, pound or count. Over time you’ll be able to see if you’re getting less for your money.
Look at generics to save money (and, in many cases, get a better product) or just change brands. Buy more than one if the price is good, but watch the expiration dates.
Lastly, consider signing up for a store’s loyalty card if you get cash bene ts for doing so, and sign up for the emailed weekly sales yer to shop from.
By shopping carefully, we can beat them at their own game.

President Joe Biden’s initiative, aimed at providing targeted debt relief to millions of student-loan borrowers, is now before the Supreme Court. Opponents to the program say it amounts to an unlawful attempt to erase an estimated $430 billion of federal student loan debt under the guise of the pandemic. What side do you fall on regarding student loan forgiveness?
• The effects of the pandemic are still being felt by many Americans and I agree that loan forgiveness needs to happen.
• Students borrowed this money expecting to pay it back and should.
• Loan forgiveness is a noble idea but shouldn’t we fix the system first?

RAVES
Huge Thank You!
To the wonderful person who found my wallet at the plaza on Commerce Drive in Victor on February 18th and turned it in to a store. You have no idea how much you helped a stranger! My wallet contained my license, cash, gift cards and a charge card. Everything was still there. I will never forget your selflessness! You are a miracle to me.
The Stranger whose kindness restored my faith today!
I wanted to get my sincere thank you out to the gentleman who pulled me out of a slushy frozen mess in the parking lot near the ATM in Churchville today. After struggling trying to dig out my old beat up 2WD truck on my own for nearly half an hour to no avail... I wish I had taken the time to ask the gentleman’s name and shake his hand. Your kindness was truly unexpected and words cannot express how much you helped me not only get out of my predicament, but how much you improved my frustration and the somewhat angry and rude mood I had started my day with. Thank you so much for the assistance and for your kind words and demeanor. It meant more than you know.
Thank you
Many thanks to the kind and honest person who found my purse at Wegman’s and returned it to the customer service desk. Your action was much appreciated!
How clean is your street?
A big thumbs down to my neighbor who thinks it's his job to clean the street. Cleaning up debris in the street is good; dumping it in your neighbor’s yard, not so good. Now this is not trash. It is ice and snow buildup along the curb. It's not in anyone's way and it will melt. Now it's piled in my front yard along with all the dirt and stones that the plow has scraped up. It looks terrible and was totally unnecessary! Do you think when it melts he will come over and clean that up? No. So you're retired and bored, me too! The next time you feel the need to clean the street, please use your own yard as the dumping ground.
Stop turning small towns into the inner city I moved out here a little over 10 years ago. I am so disappointed in how so many stores and restaurants are being built in the same parking lots. Like one in front of the other, looking like the big inner cities. Too many apartments now going up on every corner too. The bright lights in the store windows are awful and make it look like downtown pawn shops all along the main drag. Enough is enough, crime goes up and areas start to look like trash with all these businesses on top of each other. The rush hour is bad enough. The more you keep putting up here, the more traffic. Please leave some dignity to this town.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL
Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

I miss your Smile, your Laugh, your Gestures, the sound of your Voice. Your Freedom Philosophy.

Members of the younger generations suffer from an imagined necessity for doing what others are doing, solely because “everyone is doing it.” Probably most of the questionable habits of today’s teenagers can be traced to “peer pressure.” Each youngster feels he or she must go along with all group activities or be branded as a non-conforming “oddball” or “loner.”
As we grow older, we realize that what others do is the worst guide for our own behavior. We learn the delight, and the relief, of simply “not going” to any place or practice that we dislike or disagree with.
The pre-planning of one’s own funeral arrangements relieves your loved ones of the burden of making painful decisions under stress. Ask our friendly staff about the details.

This date marks the day the UN signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
I am the smallest of my living species. I have the narrowest black stripes of any of my subspecies and I am also the darkest in orange compared to other subspecies. I weigh 260 lbs on average and grow up to 8ft long.
Why is World Wildlife Day important? We all share one planet. Ensuring Earth remains a thriving, living, breathing planet means taking care of everything in it. Overfishing can result in disastrous economic problems for coastal communities dependent on the trade. The loss of a species can lead to changes in the local environment, which can directly a ect the humans living there. Wildlife conservation is an integral part of creating a sustainable world.
I have a paler coat than most subspecies of my kind, and large, dark, widely spaced rosettes with thick, unbroken rings. They weigh 70-105 pounds. I have a thick coat that can grow as long as 7 centimeters in winter.
I am one of the world’s largest living primates. I have muscular arms, a massive chest, and broad hands and feet — and longer hair and shorter arms than my lowland cousins. My thick black hair helps insulate from cold weather.
I reach a shoulder height of between 6.6 and 10.5 ft, weigh between 4,400 and 8,800 lbs, and have 20 pairs of ribs. I typically have smaller tusks. My skin color is lighter than that of maximus and indicus with the least depigmentation.
You may think my skin is black, but it is dark gray or dark brown. I am 10.812.0 ft long and 1,760-3,080 lbs. I have a large head, short neck and short, thick legs. I also have a prehensile, pointed upper lip.
My habitat consists of the lowland rainforests and tropical, swamp, and mountain forests on the island of Borne. I have a round face with a dark red coat. I have strong hands and hand-like feet, along with flexible hips and long arms that allow me to live primarily in treetops.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
