SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY
The color green is everywhere come St. Patrick’s Day, but celebrants may be surprised to learn that blue is the color that was once most affiliated with St. Patrick himself. Numerous paintings depict St. Patrick wearing blue vestments. But green is the color now most instantly associated with Ireland, which is widely referred to as the “Emerald Isle.” Ireland’s lush countryside and rolling green hills attract millions of visitors each year. The color green can be found just about everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, even if Patrick himself was partial to blue.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP
Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

One of the expenses that hits first-time homeowners the hardest upon moving into their new homes is the monthly energy bill. As winter wears on,
not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.
In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air
are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS
Curled, cracked or missing shingles may prove troublesome. Inclement weather can test the strength of even the most durable roofs. Even though many roofs are designed to last up to 30 years, some may need to be replaced early, particularly when they have been exposed to harsh weather over a period of years. Individual shingles can be replaced as spot treatments, but if the damage is widespread, a new roof may be necessary.

Take practice tests. Practice tests can be invaluable. Such tests can indicate where students are strong and any areas they should seek to improve. A Letter to Village of Avon Residents
Village of Avon Residents:
On March 19, I urge Village of Avon residents to elect James Harrington Mayor of Avon.
Mr. Harrington represents a timely opportunity to establish a more open, receptive, and productive village government.
As Mayor, Mr. Harrington, with public support and an invigorated Village Board, will need to develop solutions to crucial issues confronting the village: a water system that “lost” 60 million gallons in 2022; a waste system that needs millions of dollars of upgrades; code enforcement that actually cleans up public and private property; budget reform that eliminates superfluous positions; sidewalks that need repair or replacement; and, especially relevant, mayoral oversight of village departments. Mr. Harrington has the insight and energy to advance this critical work.
is election is an opportunity to change the approach and administration of village government. On March 19, I urge Avon residents to be a force for this change - elect James Harrington Mayor of Avon.
Sincerely,
George Brown

BEST BUYS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full price is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. In addition to coupons and other discounts, shoppers can usually score deals based on which time of year they shop for particular items. Each year, various consumer resources offer advice on the best time to buy certain items. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purchase certain items. Consumers who take advantage of sales offered at the start of the new year can save substantial amounts of money. Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on items for themselves.

DID YOU KNOW?
Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.
· Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh.Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.
· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head.
· Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression.
· Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help.
· Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

Treatment Given for Dry Eyes Fails to Improve Condition
DEAR DR. ROACH: I developed chronic dry eyes after having cataract surgery on both eyes. I consulted an ophthalmologist who specialized in treating dry eyes. She prescribed Restasis, but my condition didn’t improve after three months of use. She then switched me to Xiidra and instructed me to use it for two more refills, which lasted for nine months.
At the end of my conversation with the dry eye specialist, she said that she had done everything she could for me. I inquired about the Miebo drug that was recently approved or the LipiFlow procedure. She mumbled something, then said “goodbye” and “good luck.” Was she openly admitting her incompetence?
-- K.J.W.
ANSWER: It’s hard for me to believe that a dry eye specialist wouldn’t know about the new treatments available in their area of expertise, and I can only guess that there was some kind of miscommunication. As a generalist, I have to know at least a little bit about a whole lot of conditions, rather than a specialist who knows a whole lot about just a few conditions.
For most people with dry eyes, starting with artificial tears is usual and effective, but I certainly have had patients use artificial tears many times daily and still have unpleasant symptoms. I also recommend trying to avoid dry areas, especially with high airflow.
Most people with dry eyes have blockages in the meibomian glands, which secrete an oily substance that helps prevent the eye fluid from drying. It also forces the lacrimal glands to make more tears. (This leads to the paradox of people having red, watery eyes when they really have dry eye disease.) Trying to unblock the meibomian glands with baby shampoo and warm water is another treatment generalists like me often try. But when these therapies aren’t working, an ophthalmologist is essential. An ophthalmologist can do an exam to be sure if the meibomian glands are blocked. Among the treatments they have available are the ones you tried: cyclosporine (Restasis), which works well for a minority of people; lifitegrast (Xiidra), which decreases inflammation; varenicline (Tyrvaya), which increases tear production; and Miebo (perfluorohexyloctane), which works by reducing evaporation.
If the problem really is the blocked glands, doctors can also consider more powerful treatments to unblock them. One of these, Lipiflow, is a heat-based treatment. My colleagues in ophthalmology, to whom I refer, tell me that this is often successful, although the process may need to be repeated -- sometimes every six months and sometimes longer. Ophthalmologists can also place plugs to reduce the loss of tears through drainage.

EXPLORE ALL OPTIONS. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children.

That winter days are o’er; My heart is singing with him, I love him more and more.... Oh, Spring is surely coming, Her couriers fill the air; Each morn are new arrivals, Each night her ways prepare; I scent her fragrant garments, Her foot is on the stair.

Here’s a Tip
* Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little, but once it settles, they make very nice bowls. I do this with pizza dough as well. Prebake for a few minutes to form the bowl, then fill with ingredients and complete baking.
* If you can put a tension rod in the cabinet under your sink, you can use it to hang spray bottles for extra storage. It’s amazing how much space clears up, and it’s easy to find the bottle you need.
* Travel a lot? Make use of those shower caps by pairing up shoes and using the shower cap to hold them together while simultaneously protecting your clothes from the shoe bottoms. Smart!

William Melvin Kelley (1937-2017)
BY SUZIE WELLS
Born November 1, 1937 at Seaview Hospital on Staten Island, son of an editor of the Amsterdam News, one of the oldest and most influential African American newspapers, William Melvin Kelley made a name for himself in the mid-20th century, and notably spent time during his career as visiting professor at SUNY Geneseo.
According to the Livingston County Historian’s office, William Kelley’s death and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has renewed interest in his books, which are frequently included on recommended reading lists during Black History Month. Kelley is o en deemed the first to use the term “woke” in print a er his 1962 New York Times op-ed, in which he credits a lot of what Americans called “beatnik slang” as originating with African Americans.
Growing up in a working-class Italian American community in the Bronx, Kelley attended Fieldston, a nearly all-white prep school, where he was student-council president, captain of the track team, and “all-around ‘golden boy.’” He attended Harvard, aiming for a career as a civil rights lawyer. ere, mentored by some of the great experimental novelists and poets of the time, Kelley found his passion, “[abandoning] all his illustrious career plans” to focus on writing.
In his fiction, Kelley explores “the destructiveness of racial categories” as well as “the primacy of sound.” Kelley’s groundbreaking, award-winning debut novel, A Different Drummer, was published in 1962, propelling him into the spotlight. SUNY Geneseo professors Paul Schacht and Walter Harding particularly connected Kelley and Henry David oreau’s alternative views of existence and presence of mind through life.
Kelley served as author-in-residence at SUNY Geneseo during the tumultuous 1965, when civil unrest across the country escalated dramatically as thousands marched against the mistreatment of African Americans and to protest the Vietnam War. e Geneseo campus, with a predominately white student body and faculty, embraced the changing times, but was quiet in comparison to other places as the social counterculture of the 1960s took hold.
While at Geneseo, Kelley taught courses on creative writing and published his second novel, A Drop of Patience. His wife, artist Karen Gibson (now known as Karen “Aiki” Kelley), and newborn daughter, Jesi, accompanied Kelley during his residency. In addition to hosting lectures and book signings for Kelley’s new book, Aiki had her first one-woman art show at the college. She has continued working as an artist to the present day.
A erleavingGeneseo, theKelleysmovedabroadandWilliam published several more works, most unique in their narration and techniques, though usually portrayed people and themes of significant moral seriousness. Kelley was fascinated by language and its variations between speakers. He also came to doubt the
capacity of the English language “to adequately express African-American life,” sometimes blending Black vernacular with puns, regional dialects, and linguistic techniques “thatmostreadersstruggle to identify” as e New Yorker’s Kathryn Shulz wrote in 2018.
Schulz says Kelley was “the lost giant of American literature,” “notably woke,” turning “his considerable intellect and imagination to the question of what it is like to be white in this country, and what it is like, for all Americans, to live under the conditions of white supremacy – not just the dramatic cross-burning, neo-Nazi manifestations of it common to his time and our own but also the everyday forms endemic to our national culture.”
However, when covering the Malcolm X murder trial for e Saturday Evening Post, Kelley became so disgusted with perceived biases in the US judicial system he moved the family to Paris and then to Jamaica, where William focused on his writing and Aiki on her art, as they raised and homeschooled their daughters, Jesi and Cira.
e family eventually returned to New York City. He continued to write and taught fiction at Sarah Lawrence College for almost 30 years starting in 1989. ough Kelley “wrote constantly” for his last 47 years, he never published another book and passed away in 2017.
Aiki says William’s career obscurity was a casualty of the African American revolution’s defeat: “As the momentum of the civil rights movement ebbed, those with the power to make publishing decisions turned their attention elsewhere.” Some propose that Kelley’s unique narrative style was to blame, as readers of both races disconnected from his experimental prose.
William Kelley’s family maintains an artists’ lifestyle in the Bronx, even as life has taken them on different paths outside creative life. His legacy never dies. May we all speak our truths and respect each other enough to hear them.

DID YOU KNOW? The first International Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 20, 1968. The games were the brainchild of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who first proposed the idea of nationwide sports contests for young people with intellectual disabilities in November of 1966. Kennedy Shriver had spent years advocating for young people with intellectual disabilities, even opening a summer camp for such youngsters at her home in suburban Washington, D.C. in June of 1962. More than 200 events were offered at the first Special Olympics, including water polo, the 100-yard swim, the 50-yard dash, the broad jump, and the high jump.

Small Town Shoutout
I wanted to give a small shout out to my small town that in the past few years has done many things for their residents and visitors. From updating/paving the park walkway to adding a disc golf course to new events to redoing a building to a small venue spot, the work hasn’t gone unnoticed by your residents. Kudos!
Wine Sales in Grocery Stores
The grocery stores don’t need to sell wine. They are already dominating the local revenue streams of our communities. Why jeopardize the small wine & liquor stores that help make up our local commercial sectors. It’s just greed on the part of the grocery chains. Write your legislators and say “no” to grocery store wine sales.
Breakfast on a Saturday Morning Brings Me Joy
Handicapped parking
After moving back to Webster 1 1/2 years ago from the Buffalo area, I resumed attending a restaurant in Webster to meet friends and acquaintances from 9:00AM to about 10:30AM to make garrulous conversation. The conversation is all over the place, and it is made up of people in their 70s to early 80s. The number of attendees can vary from 6–12 people. However, adding to this happy merriment is my engaging with a lovely 7 year disabled girl named Delilah. She is brought there by her mom who puts her in a high chair cause she can’t walk and can’t talk too well, but she understands. They sit in a booth about 10 feet down the aisle from our group. That sweet blonde haired little girl has stolen my heart and the others in my group. I wave to her and blow kisses from where I sit and call her name. She then exhibits a smile that enthralls my heart. For the past 3-4 weeks I have brought her candy and dolls. Her mom brings her to our table to interact. Yes, Delilah and friends bring joy to me to start the weekend.
AGAIN, this must be addressed! Monday, a red SUV sped up and quickly pulled in front of me, cutting me off. Then they pulled in the [Department store] (same one as me) and sat in the vehicle for 5 minutes before getting out. My point? In such a hurry to cut me off then sat 5 minutes before getting out. He had parked in a handicapped spot, literally jumped out, bent over, pulled a young child out of a car seat, carried the toddler and briskly walked into the store. PHYSICIANS!! Please do a better job of passing out tags! Seriously, the abuse must stop! This man’s strength did not warrant that close spot by any means. His walking was fantastic. If disabled mentally? Seizures?…he had a young child with him while driving. The excuses must stop, these people know they are abusing this! There must be more spots for the true ambulatory disabled.

TIPS TO COPE WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE
Discussthedeathof yourlovedone.TheAPAnotesthatavoidingtalkingaboutadeceased loved one can lead to isolation and a disruption in the healing process. Speaking about the death of a loved one can help individuals understand what happened, and that understanding can facilitate the healing process.
“We do not free ourselves from something by avoiding it, but only by living through it....” ~
Cesare Pavese
Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control.
We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it!
By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW
Consider design
Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD
(NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars.
“The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern.
One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.
Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.
You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.
