NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* Rub hands with lemon slices to get rid of onion or fish smells. Afterward, you can put the lemon slices down your garbage disposal unit with a few ice cubes to get rid of smells there, too.
* Here’s a great way to get a longer life out of a bar of soap: Press the plastic top of a pop bottle into the side of a wet bar of soap. When you set the bar down in your soap dish, put it plastic side down. This way, the bar doesn’t sit in any residual water and turn into a goopy mush. The plastic top comes out easily if you need to remove it. -- Y.P. in Illinois
* Nylon stocking strips are great and work really well in the garden. If you have a pair that has a run, chop them up into pieces. You can use them to tie up staked plants, as they are strong but gentle enough to not cause any harm. -- E.S. in Wisconsin
* Reduce your energy costs of drying clothes by hanging heavy items (think towels, throw blankets, jeans, sweats) for a few hours to air dry before popping them in the dryer. You can cut the drying time by as much as two-thirds, and still get that tumble-dried softness.
-- M.N. in Missouri
* Keep a kitchen timer near your phone so you can limit the length of long-distance calls. They can add up quickly if you don’t watch it!
* Renew your paintbrushes with this trick: Heat vinegar to boiling. Pour into a tall, narrow container that won’t melt. Add hardened brushes, bristle side down. Stick a pencil through the hole in the paintbrush handle and balance it across the top of the container. It keeps the bristles from bending in the bottom of the container. Let brushes soak until vinegar is cooled. Use a wire brush to clean.

Zoos and aquariums: Interacting with wildlife is on the itinerary when visiting zoos and aquariums, and such establishments typically offer discounted admissions to seniors. From the famed San Diego Zoo to the Georgia Aquarium, it’s possible to get up close and personal with many species.

HOW TO MAKE FATHER’S DAY MORE ENJOYABLE FOR DAD
IMPROMPTU PARTY: Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function.

PREPARE COOLING SYSTEMS FOR WARM WEATHER
HIRE A TECHNICIAN. Air conditioner technicians can be very helpful and will know how to prepare a system for hot weather. Technicians typically conduct multipoint inspections and measure such things as refrigerant levels and duct leakage. Airflow through the evaporator coil also may be checked. If a homeowner suspects the thermostat is not working properly, a technician can verify if that is true and even install a new one if necessary.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Assess the damage. Even if winter was mild, gardens might still have suffered some damage. Inspect garden beds and any fencing or barriers designed to keep wildlife from getting into the garden. Before planting anew, fix any damage that Mother Nature or local wildlife might have caused over the past several months.

The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage.
Songbirdsalsowilladdcharactertoayard.TheAudubonSocietysuggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
9355 Dansville Mount Morris Rd. • Dansville Family Owned and Operated • Steven O’Neal Serving Southern Livingston, Southern Ontario, and Steuben Counties
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part ofthetool.Soakthetoolovernight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

Adopting an Older Cat Can Bring Unexpected Issues
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We recently adopted a 12-year-old orange tomcat. Abel is neutered and well behaved, but he has some health issues that we didn’t bargain for. He’s overweight (we’re working on it) and recently needed a tooth pulled. He gets ear and eye infections frequently. I’m not about to give him up, but I wanted others to know that a senior cat o en has more medical needs than younger cats.
e tradeo is that he’s a sweet, gentle cat, well adapted to humans, and seems less inclined to escape from the house than a younger cat might. -- Kelly B., Salt Lake City
DEAR KELLY: ank you for sharing your experience! Abel sounds like a wonderful cat.
Senior cats, age 11 to 14, do need extra monitoring. ey o en have health issues speci c to older cats, and can be more susceptible to infections, bad teeth, etc. Pretty much all the same issues humans face as we grow old!
As you’ve noted, Abel’s diet is really important. Not just to lose weight and keep it o , but to make sure he’s getting the right nutrition for a senior cat. A cat food formulated for older cats is helpful, but owners should work with the veterinarian to determine the amount and type of food to give their cat each day. Lots of protein is a must, as this article by VCA points out: vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/ feeding-mature-senior-and-geriatric-cats
Dehydration is another factor for older cats. Empty and re ll your cat’s water bowl each morning and monitor how much the amount decreases throughout the day to determine how much he drinks.
Finally, monitor your cat’s litter box habits. Write them down and take them to the next vet checkup to make sure there are no hidden health problems cropping up.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER
Utilize in-vehicle energy feedback. A recent study from researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies found that drivers who used driver feedback devices in their vehicles in an effort to save fuel improved their gas mileage by about 10 percent. Many modern vehicles are equipped with such devices, and drivers can learn to use them and reap the rewards with less frequent trips to the filling station.

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES
Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.
BEE SAFE WHILE GARDENING TO PROTECT POLLINATORS
Stinging insects such as bees and wasps play a vital role as pollinators that maintain the national food supply. However, a multitude of factors, including the lack of available natural habitats for foraging pollinators, diseases, harmful mites and improper pesticide usage, have threatened pollinator health in recent years. As a result, many people have realized the importance of protecting pollinators and even developed gardens geared toward providing safe sources of nectar and pollen. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) wants to remind homeowners that while creating pollinator-friendly habitats is largely beneficial for both people and pollinators, it is important to keep in mind that some stinging insects can pose significant health and safety risks. In fact, stinging insects send an estimated 500,000 people to the hospital every year.
People with known allergies to insect stings or with asthma should be especially careful around pollinators, as stings could trigger a potentially lifethreatening reaction. There is also a common myth that bees and wasps can only sting once before they die. This only holds true for some species of stinging insects, and people should always be cautious around hives and nests. If a person comes in close contact with a stinging insect, swatting at it will often provoke it to become more aggressive. The best course of action is to remain calm and slowly walk in one direction until the insect loses interest.
Maintaining a garden that serves as a welcome oasis for wild bees or community bees that are being raised by local professionals is a great way to protect pollinators. Without proper beekeeping training, however, homeowners should never allow stinging insects to take up residence on their property.
If a hive is spotted in or around the yard, a pest management professional or professional beekeeper should be contacted to safely remove it and, if possible, move it to a safe location where the bees can be allowed to thrive without posing any dangers to the public. If the hive is located in a building, utilizing a professional is also critically important to ensure every part of it is removed; any leftover combs could contain honey that can ferment and cause serious damage, as well as attract pests to the property.

Complex Jargon Prevents Patient
From Understanding Diagnosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: After many bouts of pain in my left leg, I was referred for an MRI. They diagnosed me with left lumbar radiculitis, spondylolisthesis and lumbar spondylosis. There are many people in my independent living facility who have gotten similar diagnoses. As an RN with a master’s in nursing education, I have a question: When the diagnoses are made, do doctors not explain the problem in layman’s terms? I only found out what my list of diagnoses were from a physical therapist, to whom I was referred. -- N.F.P.
ANSWER: Doctors certainly should explain their diagnoses in language appropriate for their patients. We can forget that the language we use is sometimes incomprehensible, but that’s not an excuse. A patient should always feel comfortable in saying they don’t understand a diagnosis, or any other word or phrase their doctor uses, and ask for more explanation. Many of the most effective communicators I have seen not only ask the patient whether they understood, but have made sure their patient can explain it back to them. In your case, these specific diagnoses are generally not well-known by nonexperts, and I am disappointed that they did not give you an explanation. Lumbar radiculitis is essentially sciatica -- it’s an inflammation of the large bundle of nerve roots, which usually causes pain down the leg into particular locations, based on which nerves are being affected. It is not a specific diagnosis, as it doesn’t say what is causing the damage to the nerves. Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one vertebra overlaps another one below it (front to back, not side to side). Very mild spondylolisthesis will not cause any symptoms, but more severe cases can cause damage to the nerve roots. Spondylosis of the lumbar vertebrae is a nonspecific term signifying degeneration of the spine, usually due to osteoarthritis and often including degeneration of the disks in between the vertebrae. So, these diagnoses together suggest that you have osteoarthritis of the spine, along with a displacement of one vertebra over another, causing damage to the nerve roots of the spine. These conditions would be likely to cause the back and leg pain you have on your left side.

Variations on the process of body detoxification have been elements of many traditional health practices, including ayurvedic medicine and traditionalChinesemedicine.
Consult your health care provider before starting a body detox regimen, but data suggest that most individuals without chronic medical conditions can undergo a simple detox, and the simplest of plans is this: Drink more water. Consistently drinking water each day can help rid your body of toxins even if you do nothing else. Data suggest that many American adults don’t drink enough water, although it is essential for maximumhealth.

SPRING CLEANING TIPS TO DETOX YOUR BODY
A BRIEF GLIMPSE INTO THE MIND AND INSPIRATION THAT IS HENRIETTA POET, KAREN FARIS
BY SUZIE WELLS
What inspires you to write (poetry and otherwise)?
Inspiration is a tricky concept because while you can have ashes of ideas and sometimes things pour out of you, the truth is that you have to write, create, and be creative for that inspiration to nd you. Inspiration is about connections. It’s about your brain being ready to nd new forms and see things in a di erent way. It comes from hard work. If you are sitting around waiting for inspiration to hit before you even start, you will never start. What inspires me in my poetry is the absurdity of modern-day existence. Needless to say, I have a lot to work with right now.
How would you describe your writing habits?
Writing is a muscle. e more you write, the easier it is to write and think in whatever form your creativity takes, whether it be poetry, prose, non ction–anything, really. e actual form isn’t as relevant as the practice of it. is applies to all art practices. Because I am also a visual artist, I don’t necessarily write every day, but I do practice my art every single day and there were many, many years where I wrote every single day.
What are your favorite topics or themes to write about?
e absurdity of modern existence. I mean really. ere is lots of fodder there for my performance poems. Also, I am fairly political in my poetry with an eye towards environmentalism, social justice, and “women’s issues,” which o en, if not always, intersect. e world we hand down to our children is a mess and grownups refuse to do anything about it except ght about it, so I write about that. Do you ever worry or overthink about anything in particular when you write?
Overthink. Overwrite. All the time. Wreck a poem by trying to do too much or too little with it. at’s why I save every version so I can backtrack if I veer too far from a poem’s charted course. You hear writers talk about spending days taking commas in and out or changing an opening line back and forth. Don’t do that. Write it and move on. en come back a week, month, or year later to look at it. Writing is a long game. Some things need time to complete. What writing groups/networks do you connect with?
I sort of bop around because I practice many di erent kinds of art. Artist Breakfast Group is one of my favorite inclusive Greater Rochester groups. ey meet every Tuesday morning at 8:15am. See their website or FB page. Various groups and events operate out of Before Your Quiet Eyes Bookstore on Monroe Ave. and at Books ETC out in Macedon. Ken and John both o er supportive places for writers and artists at any stage in their careers.
What are your favorite/greatest accomplishments as a writer/poet/ human being?
One of the great things about being an artist is the ability to touch people’s hearts and to spread compassion and kindness by sharing one’s humanity because we don’t practice this enough in our competitive, capitalistic world. e world and its resources are nite, which is not something we are willing to deal with and yet we must. Being able to bring people into a world of dialogue and conversation rather than divisiveness is always gratifying.
What role does creative writing and/or poetry play in everyday life?
Being creative in some way is part of the human existence. Whether you write or garden, we bene t from exercising our creativity. Don’t feel like you can only do one thing either. Write. Play music. Learn how to do bonsai. It’s all from the same creative well and is important for daily existence. In our hectic, chaotic world, the practice of an art form gives your mind space to expand and relax, gives it an opportunity
to learn and be renewed as well as feel satisfaction that you did something that inspired you. What advice would you give an aspiring writer?
My advice for a beginning writer is that every sentence you write prepares you for the next sentence, so just write. Do not be afraid of your delete button and use it o en. A poem doesn’t have to be great for it to exist. In fact, most writing isn’t good, but you won’t get to the stu that matters without crumpling up a lot of paper. Equally important is to read everything! Go out to see other writers when they read. Go hear music. Go to the theatre. Street art. Whatever interests you. Just get out there and see what’s happening. And nd a critique group to read your work. If people just say “oh, that’s nice” or “I liked it,” you will never get better. Being open to seeing what other people see in your work will help you grow as an artist and will help you not only to learn your cra , but how to cra a piece aligned with your intentions.
Look out for a May event at Studio 402 in Anderson Alley. Also, First Fridays 6-9pm and Second Saturdays, Noon-4pm are open studio times. You can nd me in Studio 208 in Anderson Alley. @karenafaris, FB https://www.facebook.com/karenafaris

Sometimes the sun is in my eyes or my arms are full or maybe it’s my heart over brimming sharp and urgent like lemon zest or bees buzzing itching to pollinate in thick pools of dripping honey: it’s a kind of listening from within, a swimming in the water’s stream a barefooted walk in the dewy grass of the universe that makes me forget to cart her wherever I go the one with the perfect skin done hair and heels to die for But as soon as I step out get wet in the rain burnt in the blaze of a mid-day sun, I am reminded by the others who have not been carried away I am undone.

Makes 4 servings
For
SPICY STEAK TAMPICO
4 beef tenderloin medallions (each 6 ounces and 3/4-inch thick)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup roasted green chile peppers (see below)
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1. Brush steaks thoroughly with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper
2. Place medallions on preheated grill, close lid and grill, turning once, until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 F for medium rare, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes.
3. Preheat broiler with rack 3 to 4 inches away from heat. Place steaks on individual ovenproof plates. Top each steak with equal amounts of chile and cheese. Broil until cheese melts, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.
To roast chiles: Preheat greased outdoor grill to medium or preheat an oven broiler. Place fresh chiles on outdoor grill or gas stovetop over medium heat or arrange on a baking sheet and place 2 to 3 inches away from heat under broiler. Grill or broil, turning often with tongs, until surfaces of skin are lightly charred and blistered. Immediately place peppers in a paper bag or an airtight container and close tightly. Let peppers cool for 12 to 15 minutes. Peel off charred skin and remove stems and seeds. Tear into strips or chop as needed according to the recipe. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling chiles. Refrigerate peppers for up to 3 days or freeze in airtight container for up to 6 months.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles Living
Long Lives in the Blue Zones
In several parts of the world there are large populations that regularly live into their 90s and even pass 100 years. ey’re called Blue Zones, those parts of the world where seniors live longer, healthier lives. It started as a National Geographic project to look for the secrets to longevity. ey were able to identify ve locations: Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; and Okinawa, Japan.
Fascinated scientists began to study these over-100 people and concluded that they had nine commonalities. ey are:
• e Blue Zoners move and exercise naturally, working in gardens and going about their lives with frequent walks.
• ey have a purpose to each day.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the
When is too early to plant directly outside? How do I protect my early plants from the frost we may very well still have?
There are at least three reasons for waiting until at least mid-May for planting young plants outdoors unprotected: you want to avoid too cold weather, you want the soil to be warm enough, and you want your plants to be big and tough enough to survive. A covering like a cloth sheet can prevent frost from damaging plants if the soil is warm, but if the temperature falls below freezing, the plants are still likely to die.
The average freeze date is the end of April. Soil temperature at planting time should
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
be at least 50°. Your young plants should have at least three sets of leaves, and they need to get “hardened off” with gradual exposure to outdoor conditions of sun, wind, and changing temperatures. Often there is no frost after mid-May, but you need to check the long-range weather forecast before planting: the nighttime low temperature should be above 40°; 50° is even better for most young plants. Plants including broccoli, lettuce, and other greens and root vegetables can be planted outside in late April, while warm weather plants like tomatoes and squash need to wait.
A cold frame could enable you to start your plants outdoors. You could buy one, or some people build their own.

Most often unpaid, volunteers generously donate a part of their lives to do the work that nobody else likes to do — cleaning up after the event, fostering shelter dogs, chaperoning field trips, or helping the librarian; there are so many areas requiring volunteers. This month, we salute them for their unwavering services to businesses and communities and hold aloft their examples to inspire young and adults towards volunteerism.

RAVES
Thank you DePaul Rosa's Villas and Roberts Wesleyan University of Chili, NY
I am an elderly, 78 years young woman who lives at DePaul Rosa’s Villas in LeRoy, currently attending sessions of Occupational Therapy training presented by students from Roberts Wesleyan University. Each of these students have added value to my life with their refreshing outlook on the future of their careers. I am so thankful for these sessions and appreciate the students’ willingness to interact with the tenants of this facility. When the students depart from the sessions, I feel good as if I had a hug. The students brought happiness and joy to my day. There are a few tenants who are not from this area who feel isolated with their medical issues. The students bring hope, optimism and give inner strength to the elderly. The students are an inspiration to all of us attending the sessions, as they go above and beyond with care and consideration. The future lies before them and God bless these young students.
Thank You Honeoye Falls Lima Students
My friends and I went to the Senior lunch and preview of Guys & Dolls. We were amazed. The lunch was excellent! The student servers were polite and they did a wonderful job making people feel welcomed. The play was so much fun. The students, actors, musicians and behind the scene workers were very professional and the play was perfection. My friends were so happy to come for the afternoon and had a great time. We are all looking forward to next year. We had so much fun from the time we walked in the school until we left.
Great Service!
Throughout the winter the folks working at Kwik Fill in Lima always did their jobs with smiles on their faces and a nice greeting and thank you, so thank you all for your good work attitude!
Junk Area
I am writing this with the concern that a recently appointed Historical Area of the village has turned into a junk yard. There are now 2-3 containers filled with junk, 2-3 RVs (not running) filled with junk. 2 full sized boats. Busses filled with junk. Non-running car, 2 plows, multiple lawn mowers and even more junk. This has become an eye sore not only for the residents and the entire village, but is this what we want people to see as they visit our village? THIS IS ALLOWED IN A HISTORICAL AREA? Why has the village board or the mayor not said anything? I have a good idea why not. This has brought feral cats, mice, rats, raccoons, and even skunks to the area. It has become a hoarding area. This needs to be cleaned up. Very sad for an area that even when it was empty added character to the village. Now it has become a junk yard!!
Donating
Why do multibillion dollar corporations have their employees solicit at the checkout for donations? Whether you’re put on the spot for an answer or the computer’s check out screen has a button to donate money for whatever the charity of the week is, do corporations really need tax write offs? Major corporations are notorious for avoiding taxes. If you like to donate, please send it directly to the charity or cause. You’ll feel much better for your participation.

Few people, young or old, look forward to writing a will. A will is not an easy subject to broach, but it is important to have documents in place to ease the burden for family members.
When a person dies without a will, his or her assets might not go where he or she intended. In some instances, assets might go to the government. For parents who die before their children are grown, a will can also serve as a legal document indicating a plan for custody of the kids.

Into every life some rain must fall. We all suffer adversities of various kinds. We can meet these misfortunes with courage and fortitude or we can grovel in self-pity and try to find an easy way out, even if it means dodging our responsibilities.
Mere adversity never killed anyone. We live through it and usually, when the problem is finally resolved, it turns out to have been less awful than we imagined. We can stand a great deal if we are proud of the way we do it.
Families of all faiths are assured of perfectly appropriate services when they place their trust in us. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When the need arises, call us first.
