The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Untangling personal problems might take more time than the impatient Lamb expected. But it’s important to hang in there until all those knotty situations are straightened out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You still need to work out last-minute snags in your dealings with a rival. Hold your ground despite a perceived lack of support. Things should turn around before you know it. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Best not to delay preparing for that upcoming family event. The sooner you get things started, the better chance you have of finding potential problems and making needed changes. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The romantic Moon Child might be reluctant to see the reality behind that “ideal” situation. But by midweek, the practical Crab emerges to help clear away the moonbeams. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Big Cat might be receptive to more “purrsuasion” to get you to agree to a workplace change, make sure you can distinguish the fine line between facts and flattery. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your positive attitude in the workplace helps to get you noticed by the right people. Now go ahead and use some of that new selfconfidence to help shore up a personal relationship. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you might still have to work out some problems with a business partner, things go more smoothly on the home front. An investment opportunity might need more study. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t be reluctant to act on your suspicion. Even if others see nothing wrong, the astute Scorpio could sense an underlying problem that isn’t always obvious on the surface. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new opportunity presents some obstacles that need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Delaying action in hopes that the problems will go away could be counterproductive. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend or family member’s request might carry some hidden factors that could later create problems. Be sure you know all the facts before you make your decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A setback in implementing a plan could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Use the downtime to rework your original concepts and see where changes could be made. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might not be consciously fishing for compliments, but admit it -- won’t you feel great when your efforts are noticed? So accept the praise gracefully. You earned it. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of beauty in your personal life extends to your efforts to protect and preserve the natural world around you.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver
“Education is that which remains when one has forgotten everything he learned in school....” ~ Albert Einstein Obviously, Einstein was speaking of so-called higher education. Our basic primary schools teach us to read, write and calculate.... the foundation of all future learning.... and these skills cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most important thing we learn as we advance in our studies is that we have much more to be learned. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the value and the power of knowledge. We learn that we can never know everything but we also learn that we can find out, from various sources, what we need to know. We recognize that there is sometimes a need for a non-traditional, minimum service. We can supply whatever a family desires at whatever price they feel to be appropriate.

I need a home
Greetings... My name is Mister! I’m 11yrs old. I came from Hearthside Cat Rescue. I am king of my castle... just ask my 2 sister dogs. I even play fetch. My favorite thing is to perch on the highest places in the house and get plenty of beauty sleep. It shows doesn’t it?!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply. There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
YOU ARE
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Blood Pressure Drops When He Stands Up ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Will you write about orthostatic hypotension? I’ve been told I have this disorder. I’m a retired 86-year-old man in fairly good medical shape. I want to regain my regular activities. My regular doctor put me on labetalol. I think he is researching this a bit himself. This apparently is not a frequent problem. I have found articles about it on the internet, but the medical language is not easy to understand. -- R.T.F. ANSWER: “Orthostatic hypotension” literally means “low blood pressure on standing upright.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can lead to the symptom of orthostatic hypotension, but many people, especially those over 65, have no discernable cause that can be found. On standing, the blood pools in our veins, and the heart and blood vessels need to rapidly adjust to prevent blood pressure from falling too much. Even a brief drop in blood pressure can lead to a sensation of lightheadedness, and to fainting if it is more severe and prolonged. Normally, blood pressure drops about five points, but the body compensates by increasing heart rate and by constricting blood vessels. As we get older, our body’s ability to adapt to rapid changes in position can diminish. Medications, especially beta blockers and antidepressants, interfere with the body’s coping mechanisms. So I am surprised that your doctor is trying labetalol, since it is both a beta and alpha blocker, and it is one of the most notorious causes of orthostatic hypotension. But it can be difficult in older people with high blood pressure to find a medicine that doesn’t make orthostatic hypotension worse. Some general advice may be of benefit. First, don’t try to get up too quickly. If lying down, sit up for a few minutes before trying to stand, to give your body time to adapt. If your doctor says it’s OK, increase salt and water intake. In your case, it might be worth finding someone, like a hypertension expert or a cardiologist, with more expertise in managing orthostatic hypotension. I assure you it is far more common than you might think.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been experiencing shortness of breath whenever I vacation and walk in the mountains. I was a smoker, but I quit 31 years ago. My doctor sent me for the lung capacity breathing test, and I passed with flying colors. The technician said my number was one of the highest she has seen. This concerns me. Why is it happening? -- N.L. ANSWER: I have two concerns. The first is that lung capacity is a measure of just what it sounds like -- how big the lungs are. When the technician says it’s among the biggest she’s seen, I worry that it’s too big. An elevated lung capacity can go along with emphysema, which can be related to distant smoking or can be due to a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Emphysema can be diagnosed by other components of pulmonary function tests, particularly a test called the DLCO, and confirmed by X-ray or CT. However, breathing problems also might indicate heart problems and anemia, so you might need another visit. On the other hand, there is less oxygen in the thin mountain air, so some degree of shortness of breath might not be abnormal.
Dr. Wilson sees patients in our Mt. Morris office 118 Main Street | (585) 658-2100 Genesee Valley Family Medicine is part of Highland Hospital. For more information, visit urmedicine.org/primary-care.

Tips to Garden Safely • Get moving before you garden. A 10 minute brisk walk and stretches for the spine and limbs are good ways to warm up.
• Change positions frequently to avoid stiffness or cramping. For example, if you’ve been leaning forward for more than a few minutes, and your back starts to ache, slowly stand up, and gently lean backwards a few times.
We have advanced spine training. If you or anyone you know is experiencing back pain, consult a licensed physical therapist.
• Use a garden cart or wheelbarrow to move heavy planting materials or tools. Lift with your knees and use good posture while moving a cart or wheelbarrow.
• Give your knees a break. If kneeling or leaning down to the ground causes significant pain in your back or knees, consider using elevated planters to do your gardening. If kneeling on both knees causes discomfort in your back, try kneeling on one and keep the other foot on the ground.
• Maintain good posture. Bend your knees, tighten your abdominals, and keep your back straight as you lift or pull things.
• Take breaks. Plan to work in short stints, building in time for breaks before you start feeling aches and pains.
• Keep moving after you garden. End with gentle backward bending of your low back, a short walk and light stretching.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis. Little Lakes Community Association to Honor Vets Submitted by Tawn Feeney
T
he old Hemlock School, now the Little Lakes Community Center, has long been a gathering place to honor our veterans on Memorial Day. In front of the building is a monument, built from a huge granite millstone, honoring the service and sacrifice of three area veterans of World War II. Each year, since the monument was erected in 1950 at which time the building was still used as a school, members of our armed forces and veterans’ groups have paid their respects to these fallen heroes: Claude Abbey, Carl Drain, and Elbert Knapp. The tradition continues to this day, but now it will be joined by two very special events to honor veterans, sponsored by the Little Lakes Community Association. LLCA, in partnership with the Honeoye Community Players, was recently awarded a grant by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts to present a series entitled, “Voices of Vets.” The series honors the courage and sacrifices of veterans, particularly women, who have served our country but whose contributions may have been underappreciated in the past. The centerpiece of the series is the production of the play, “A Piece of My Heart,” by Shirley Lauro, which tells the true stories of seven women who served in Vietnam. A simple set and minimal costuming are used to suggest the changes in time and place as the women each experience the war and their difficult return to civilian life. The play has been presented thousands of times here and abroad and has been honored by the Vietnam Vets Association as “the most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation.” The play will be presented on July 12th and 13th, at 7 p. m. and July 14th at 3 p. m. in the Little Lakes Community Center on Main Street in Hemlock. Auditions for the play will be held at LLCC on May 21st and 22nd from 6:30 until 9:00 p. m. Both men and women of various ages and ethnicities are being sought as actors and actresses. No previous acting experience is required. Volunteers to serve on the stage crew are also welcome. The production staff is excited to be able to offer the first play on this rehabilitated stage since the 1950’s! If you have questions about the production you may contact the director, Bonnie Sykes, at (585) 703-7536. The production staff for the play is also looking for gently used military clothing, insignia, duffle bags and other military-issued items from the Vietnam era to be donated or borrowed. On May 18th, Armed Forces Day, veterans and their family members will be given the opportunity to tell their own stories in an

informal evening gathering at the Center. Volunteers from LLCA are reaching out to various individuals and veterans’ organizations to get the word out that their neighbors and fellow vets want to hear about their experiences. Women vets are especially being sought, but all veterans are welcome to participate. In addition, on Memorial Day, LLCA will be offering a welcoming table in front of the building, containing refreshments and information about the organization to those who have participated in the services at the memorial. LLCA is a group of dedicated volunteers, who for the past three years have been hard at work to save the iconic 1920’s brick building and to create an effective resource and social center for our area. The former Jack Evans Community Center was owned by the Town of Livonia until LLCA was able to purchase it from the Town nearly a year ago, after it had been closed to the public for over a year. Former classrooms in the building are now being rented to small businesses, and the group sponsors numerous events each month. The group is always seeking volunteers who are interested in joining its efforts. They are also welcoming anyone who would like to offer to teach a class or instructional series to interested individuals in almost any endeavor imaginable, e.g. arts and crafts, home repair, gardening, history, science, movement, etc. Fees for the courses can be shared with the LLCA or the instructor can rent a classroom from the organization. For more information, contact LittleLakesNY.org or call (585) 367-1046 and leave a message. If you or a member of your family is a vet and you would like to share your story on May 18th, you may email tawnfeeney@gmail.com. Your questions and comments are welcomed. This project was made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York. https://www.hemlockandcanadicelakes.com/hcl_school_ hemlock_news_article_1950_05_31_veterans_memorial.htm Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

On Friday, March 15th, we went to Krony’s as part of our weekend celebration for our 45th anniversary. As usual, the food is mouth-wateringly delicious! I have to credit the fine, outstanding staff that work diligently in the kitchen,
To the person who mentioned political correctness, insensitivity to the majority and the spirit of the season regarding wishing others a Merry Christmas. Acknowledging and respecting the beliefs of others during December is not about being “politically correct.” It is generally accepted that the spirit of the season is about love and generosity. Imposing one’s own personal beliefs on others flies in the face of this spirit. Further what one believes and how one expresses those beliefs is not subject to the “majority rules” system which only applies to elections. By wishing others “Happy Holidays” everyone is included and no one is excluded. It has nothing to do with being offended either, it has to do with equal treatment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

preparing our food. It was a Friday, so it was busy with quite a steady flow of orders to go. I have to start off with JOEY who always has such a charismatic personality. He takes the time to greet me, no matter how busy he is. Cindy is an inspiration. Charlie was friendly, and as for the rest, I don’t have your names, or can’t recall them. Sorry! Unlike another pizza establishment, you can expect CONSISTENTLY DELICIOUS food, coupled with FAST, COURTEOUS service from a FRIENDLY staff at KRONY’S. It
doesn’t get any better than that!!! THANKS!
Don’t you just love when your doctor’s office calls or leaves a message to verify the day and time of your appointment? It’s nice of them to remind us BUT it’s always followed by, “If you don’t cancel before 24 hours, you’ll be charged a late fee,” or “if you’re 5 minutes late, your appointment will be canceled and rescheduled at a later date.” Remind them of that courtesy call next time you are seen 1 to 2 hours past your appointment time. Suggest maybe a free coffee gift card if they can’t meet their appointment times. Bet you’ll get the “deer in the headlights look.”
Species are dying, and the ozone is damaged. What are we leaving for our children and grandchildren, if anything at all? Recycling and using reusable bags are all well and good, but it will be for nothing if we don’t hold those accountable who are content to kill the earth for the sake of profit. Now, is not the time for complacency; it is time for outrage.
It is so awful to go about everyday tasks with the knowledge that our earth is being destroyed, and all for the sake of greed.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd's diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak. • On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890.
See Your Eye Doctor (NAPS)—During May, the National Eye Institute’s (NEI) Healthy Vision Month—or anytime—it’s important to keep your eye on your vision health. After all, the NEI, part of the National Institutes of Health, points out that your eyes deliver 80 percent of the information you take in every day. Keep Your Eyes Healthy To help, Henry Schein Medical and Welch Allyn encourage patients to talk to their primary care physician and ophthalmologist about eight suggestions offered by NEI: • Get an eye exam: Many serious eye diseases don’t have any warning signs—so you could have an eye problem and not know it. Plus, you may not realize you could see better than you do. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best way to stay on top of your eye health. • Know your family’s eye health history: Many eye diseases run in families. Talk to your relatives about their eye health. • Protect your eyes—at work and play: About 2,000 people in the United States get a serious work-related eye injury each day. People with sports-related eye injuries end up in the ER every 13 minutes. Wear protective eyewear, such as safety glasses, goggles and safety shields. • Give your eyes a rest: If you spend a lot of time at the computer (or focusing on another specific thing), you may sometimes forget to blink—which can tire out your eyes. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away and focus about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. • Wear sunglasses (even on cloudy days): They can protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Get a pair that blocks out at least 99 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. • Eat eye-healthy foods: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables— especially dark leafy greens, such as spinach or kale—is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Research also shows that fish high in omega-3 fatty acids—salmon, tuna and halibut—can help protect your vision. • Stay at a healthy weight: If you’re overweight or obese, you’re more likely to develop diabetes and other health problems that can lead to vision loss. • Get plenty of physical activity: Regular physical activity can protect you from serious eye disease. To help make eye health care easier for everyone, and advance vision health education, patients can benefit from new solutions available to doctors from Henry Schein Medical. One, the Welch Allyn® RetinaVue® 100 Imager care delivery model, helps preserve the vision of patients with diabetes with a simple five-minute eye exam during routine primary care visits. The other, the Welch Allyn Spot™ Vision Screener, is an instrumentbased screening device that can help physicians detect early signs of nearsightedness, farsightedness, blurred vision, unequal refractive power, eye misalignment and unequal pupil size among children as young as 6 months old. Learn More For more information about Healthy Vision Month and other resources, see https://nei.nih.gov/hvm. For doctors interested to learn more about the devices, visit www.henryschein.com/us-en/medical or call (800) 535-6663. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

• On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. • On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.
Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary. Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

OTHER GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup mirin 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces 1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil Salt (optional) Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill.

585-346-0222 21 Livonia Station Livonia, NY 14487 DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Open Part-time Service Desk Position:
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.
Looking for an individual who has had cashier or service desk experience and can handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. Must be customer service oriented and be a team player, and a good communicator. Must be available to work weekends.

• Licensed Hairstylist THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before.
