NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark when they are done. -- M.E. in Ohio
* Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agriculture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Check into them now.
* I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps not spill water. Pour slowly! -- P.T. in Illinois
* To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it outside for the garbage collector. -- E.L. in Virginia
* Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove compartment. They will be there if you need to go to a drive-through, and will be handy for picking up dinner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway! -- F.D. in Alabama
* Got paper recycling? More and more schools are using paper recycling as a means to fundraise. Don’t have a kid in school? Drive by and look for a dumpster or bin that’s labeled. Odds are good you might find one. If you don’t, ask!
DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles
e Heavy Li ing of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet a er the death of a long-loved companion. ere’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I rmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy li ing.
e rule of four, I call it: ere are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy li ing is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to li it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. at’s four li ings.
is applies to even the 20-pound jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be li ing without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four li ings have been required. I su er the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related li ing down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any li ing whatsoever.

The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.
Puzzle Answers This Week
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Exercise Builds Strength and Improves Limits in Those With Arthritis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I so appreciated your recent column on arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. I’m a big exerciser; however, I have always heard that this arthritis is caused or exacerbated by wear and tear. I was surprised to hear otherwise!
I have modified or given up a handful of exercises that seem to cause my joints more pain, specifically fullbody weight-bearing on my wrists. Are these exercises I can incorporate back into my routine? I have found that certain activities, i.e. card shuffling, buttoning, etc., hurt my thumbs, so I have made adaptations. Should I work through the pain, assuming that I am not causing any more damage to my joints? -- L.D.
ANSWER: Most exercise is not damaging to joints, but high-impact or high-frequency activities can certainly worsen arthritis pain.
For arthritis of the knees and hips, I recommend walking as the best exercise, starting slow and building up based on what a person can tolerate. It’s the movement, not the resistance, that’s most important, so swimming (or just walking in a pool) is a great option for people who feel too much pain from walking.
For the smaller joints of the hands and wrists, I would recommend activities that don’t hurt you as much. Stretching the joints and movements like squeezing are a good place to start. You might consider a “stress ball” or a hand therapy ball to provide some resistance and build up hand strength.
Adapting your activities to your limitations is a good idea, but you also want to work on improving those limitations. A physical or occupational therapist is your best partner in designing a program.
Don’t forget that over-the-counter topical antiinflammatory medicines, like diclofenac, are pretty effective with small joints and are very safe.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

* May 8, 1988, Stella Nickell is convicted of murder by a Seattle jury. She was the first person to be found guilty of violating the Federal Anti-Tampering Act after putting cyanide in Excedrin capsules in an effort to kill her husband. She began planning his death after their 1976 honeymoon.
Eating Out on Mother’s Day
Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

SPRING CLEANING TIPS TO DETOX YOUR BODY
Spring is here, and if your thoughts turn to spring cleaning your house or office, don’t stop there.Take the opportunity to spring clean your body, too. Variations on the process of body detoxification have been elements of many traditional health practices, including ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Consult your health care provider before starting a body detox regimen, but data suggest that most individuals without chronic medical conditions can undergo a simple detox, and the simplest of plans is this: Drink more water. Consistently drinking water each day can help rid your body of toxins even if you do nothing else. Data suggest that many American adults don’t drink enough water, although it is essential for maximum health.
Water is a key element of any body detox plan. To make the most of your water, opt for purified, enhanced water which promotes the removal of waste and toxins from the body and promotes digestive health through improved absorption of nutrients.
We are trying to contact all patients who missed their appointments during Covid. Please call our o ce if you do not have your cleaning recall schedule. ank you for your patience. Please remain safe and healthy.

Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Parts unknown: Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. Before booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there’s anywhere in particular she’d like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd puppy, Max, seems to get an ear infection every other week. He’s miserable, shaking his head from side to side. And he hates having ear drops put in -- a job that gets more di cult the larger he gets! How can I stop the constant ear infections? -- Betsy J., Syracuse, New York
DEAR BETSY: Dogs can be very prone to ear infections. e shape of their ear canal is the most likely reason. Allergies and ear mites vie for the title of top irritant in a pet’s ear canal.
e symptoms are probably very familiar to you. Dark discharge from the ears, accompanied by an unusual, dank odor, frequent head shaking, scratching at the ears, and perhaps some scabbing of the outer ear. A veterinarian can pinpoint redness and swelling inside the ear canal as well.
Thank mom, a mother figure or wife for all that she does -- from giving you style advice to motivating you when you needed it most -- celebrate your unique bond with a gift she will celebrate for many years to come.

Chicken&BiscuitDinner - Joinus Saturday,MAY6THfrom3-6pmat theYorkBaptistChurch,2738 MainStreet,York.Drive-ThruOnly! $12-Adults,$8-Students(School andCollege),Free-Children(5and under).FollowingCOVID-19Safety Guidelines.
Treatment should always start at the veterinarian’s o ce. ere, cleaning and disinfection of the ear will be done, and then your dog will likely be prescribed medication -- typically eardrops -- to be administered for up to 10 days. A er treatment is complete, you’ll want to prevent future infections by gently cleaning Max’s ears with an ear cleaning solution for dogs and cotton balls (not Q-tips).
Getting a big dog to hold still for treatment can be a struggle. Here’s one method: If he’s very reactive, try to stand over Max with one leg on each side and his head facing forward, away from you. Hold him under his muzzle and apply the medication or cleaning solution to one ear and massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Let go of his muzzle and allow him to shake his head. Repeat on the other side. Finish by gently swiping the ear canal with cotton balls.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS
The Nature Lover
Fishing and other outdoor activities might have a reputation as predominantly male hobbies, but studies show that’s not really the case. A 2016 report from the Outdoor Foundation found that 46 percent of people who participated in outdoor activities were women. If Mom is a nature enthusiast, families can plan a Mother’s Day enjoying the great outdoors, even giving Mom a new fishing pole, hiking gear or other items that align with her favorite nature activity.

Shop Smart for Mother’s Day
Do some sleuthing. Play detective and take inventory of what Mom likes to do the most. If you ask your mother what she wants, she will likely brush off the question and tell you nothing. It is up to you to do the investigative work. Pay attention to conversations and see if there is anything she mentions wanting to try or something around the house that may need updating. Practical gifts are less likely to end up unopened in the basement or attic.

Northhampton County Park Heroes
Hats off and a big thank you to the park staff and volunteers that maintain the miles of trails in Northhampton Park. With the many windstorms, and numerous dead ash trees, it has been quite a chore clearing trails so that the park hikers are able to enjoy their time in the park safely. You are appreciated!
Anonymous Donor
My friend and I were having lunch on 4/26. Our waitress told us an anonymous donor paid part of our bill. A special thank you for your kindness. It made our day!
Thank you volunteer organizations
I’d just like to give a quick shout-out to all the volunteer non-profit organizations out there doing great things for their communities. Whether it be picking up trash along trails, keeping fire hydrants clear of debris, helping to keep food pantry shelves stocked/organized, collecting items for animal shelters and beyond... THANK YOU!
Some Home Owners
Home owners that have abandoned swimming pools in their back yard are probably breeding mosquitos. Some form of wildlife could fall into it and not be able to get out. Of course some folks just have no pride in what their property looks like. Just sayin....
Missing Front License Plates
Why do so many vehicles with NY license plates on the back now not have front license plates? (This is especially true of Teslas, which Elon Musk doesn’t bother to build with a front license plate holder, but also plenty of other vehicles.) Did NY eliminate the requirement of a front plate without telling the rest of us? Or is this just another example of people thinking the rules only apply to others? The Thruway might be able to avoid a toll increase if they were allowed to charge fines to all of the vehicles passing through their toll cameras that have NY rear plates but no front plate!
Disrespectful
I sure hope that the mowers at a local cemetery are held accountable for destroying flowers that were left at graves. Destroyed flowers were spread by the mower and left. How could anyone do that!

DID YOU KNOW?
While high school seniors on the cusp of graduating and moving on to college give ample thought to their college majors, many are likely to change majors at least once after enrolling in a college or university. According to the UniversityofLaVerne,between50 and70percentofcollegestudents change majors at least once, and many of them will change their majors three times before they graduate. The University also reports that 50 percent of college graduatespursuecareersthatare not related to their majors. Career and personality assessments can help students determine which subjects they may want to study upon enrolling in a college or university. Such assessments can help students discover their interests, and then students can work with advisors and career counselors at their colleges or universities to find majors that align with those interests. High school seniors on their way to college in the coming months can rest easy that, even if they don’t know what to study when they arrive on college campuses this fall, many of their fellow freshmen are equally uncertain.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS
Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

Cochlear implants
TheNDCnotesthatcochlearimplantsareelectronicdevicesthatare surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss.
The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.
Q&A Master Gardeners with
What plants are most effective to grow in containers?
Most vegetables grown in a backyard can be grown in containers, although a container’s diameter and depth need to be considered when selecting what vegetables to grow. Plant density (number of vegetable plants per container) depends on individual plant space requirements and root depth. Containers-grown plants require more frequent fertilization typically than in ground plants because of the limited space within the container for drawing nutrients. Fertilizer can be mixed with the potting mix pre-planting, or you
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
can purchase potting mix with a starter fertilizer mixed in. Plants grown in containers need frequent watering as containers dry out fast. Watering daily is necessary to provide adequate moisture for plant growth. Apply enough water to reach the bottom of the container. Allow excess water to drain out. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering as this will encourage development of foliar diseases. Try not to let your container dry out completely between watering as this will lead to flower and fruit drop of. The size of the container needs will depend a lot on the vegetable or herbs you
plant. Most herbs can be grown in ½-1 gal containers. Cabbage, Cucumbers, green beans, leaf lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and cherry tomatoes can be planted in a 1-gallon containers. Beets, Carrots, Eggplant, Peppers, and radishes need 2-gallon containers. Your regular tomatoes will need 3-gallon containers. My personal preference is a
20 gallon grow bag where you can grow multiple vegetables together if they are companion plants (they can and like to grow together). Note: some don’t like to be grown together.

GWEN CLIFTON FROM THE FRUIT BELT OPENS WOMEN’S HOMELESS SHELTERS
BY LORI BRUTON
GwendolynCli on,FounderandExecutiveDirectorof Safe Way Homes of Greater Rochester Inc., manages two new women’s shelters in Rochester, one on the eastside and one on the westside, providing a safe place for women to heal and grow.
As a child, Cli on dreamed of helping people. As a young woman, Gwen cared for her mother, aunt, and herself, but says she su ered juggling all of it. She had to learn self-care, which isn’t sel sh, and incorporates self-care into Safe Way’s program.
When Irish and Italian immigrants rst settled in Rochester, they planted fruit and nuts because that’s how they knew to survive from their old countries. e area was aptly named the fruit belt, with streets named a er fruits and nuts, such as Walnut, Orange, and Lime. Cli on’s was the rst black family to move into the neighborhood.
When Cli on was about 10 years old, the neighborhood began to change. Her friends moved and stores changed hands to di erent ethnic groups, including Asian, Black, Caribbean, Cuban, and Dominican families. e diverse neighborhood gave Cli on a passport into the homes of people di erent than she. eir homes had pictures and décor of their country and culture. She learned to respect other people’s cultures.
Her parents taught her how to restore hope in people who felt no hope. ey lived in an upstairs apartment on Walnut Street. Her mother was the rst black woman to work at Ragu Foods making $25/hr. She decided to stay in the apartment even a er drug dealers moved in downstairs.
e neighborhood su ered dramatically during the crack epidemic, middle class evaporating to lower class, as poverty swept through. Parents of all ethnic groups in the neighborhood were on drugs. Crack did not discriminate. Cli on’s parents became the aunt and uncle of the neighborhood, taking kids in, feeding them, and sometimes buying them school clothes. Her dad taught boys how to tie a tie and took them shing. Her parents led by example and werethe rsttoeducateGwenonsocialworkandevangelism.
Cli on served as a social worker for 25 years. She assisted people in their worst states. She says, “Trauma is like cancer. It doesn’t discriminate. We do, but trauma doesn’t.” e road to despair can come from many di erent avenues: loving the wrong person, a mental breakdown, substance or alcohol abuse, or being kicked out by a friend or family member.
Cli on volunteered at a women’s homeless shelter for over ten years. Homelessness can happen to anyone at any time, she says. Some women fall on bad luck. Some have learned nothing but the poverty lifestyle and continue to cycle. Some lost their jobs during the pandemic.
ese homeless women come from all walks of life. One woman had a beautiful home in the suburbs. One day her husband came home and told her they were done. She needed help getting support, safety, and documentation.
Cli on developed her passion for and experience helping the homeless women population, especially crisis interventions such as domestic violence. She says, “It’s not just a city thing. e rural population has a huge amount of domestic violence cases.”
Over 800 Rochester residents experienced homelessness in 2019 and that number is growing. According to the Department of Housing, 16.4% of Monroe County’s population lives in severe housing and below the poverty line. e largest demographic living in poverty are females 25-34, followed by females 18-24 and females 35-44. Within those demographics in Monroe County, the poverty-level ethnic majority is mostly white, then blacks, and then Hispanics.
Safe Way Homes is a cultural response distressed women have been looking for. is movement, Making Way, helps women heal and provides a safe place where they can discover themselves and overcome trauma. Making Way can break the cycle of poverty and racism through shared resources.
Gi s and talents came together to make Gwen’s dream a reality. Ashley Cross, pastor at Glory House International, encouraged Gwen to pursue her dream. Denise Williams helped Safe Way nd two homes. Beatriz Labron answered questions and provided connections. Flight Wine Bar opened their doors and assisted Cli on with fundraising. e Safe Way team now includes psychologists, nurses, social workers, businesswomen, entrepreneurs, counselors, and attorneys. eir support has made Safe Way strong.
Safe Way Homes makes a huge impact in the Rochester community. at is what the little girl from the fruit belt dreamed of.

MOMENTS IN TIME
The History Channel
* On May 4, 1965, San Francisco Giants outfielder Willie Mays hits his 512th career home run to break Mel Ott’s National League record. Mays would finish with 660 career home runs, good for third on the all-time list at the time.
* On May 5, 2002, the comic book adaptation of “Spider-Man” becomes the fastest movie ever to earn more than $100 million at the box office. Its $39 million opening day bested the previous record of $32 million, set by “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 2001.
* On May 6, 1937, the airship Hindenburg, the largest dirigible ever built and the pride of Nazi Germany, bursts into flames upon touching its mooring mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 passengers and crewmembers.
* On May 7, 1902, Martinique’s Mount Pele begins the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The city of Saint Pierre was buried and virtually everyone died instantly when a cloud of superheated gas sent an avalanche of boiling ash down the mountain.

FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD
Lack of physical activity: A 2019 study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for 15 minutes a day or walking for an hour reduces the risk of major depression. That link is likely connected to the release of endorphins triggered by exercise. Endorphins are hormones that studies have shown contribute to a general feeling of well-being, which explains why a lack of physical activity can adversely affect mood.

Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. In addition, 73 percent of respondents did other work during a meeting, while 39 percent acknowledged falling asleep.
