DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Gardeners Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. Thanks. I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out. But common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground, and is difficult to remove. I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time. Common field milkweed, Asclepius syriaca, serves as both a preferred host plant (where these butterflies lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars feed) and a nectar source for adults. That’s why people encourage planting this specific plant.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County But Monarchs can use other types of milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens. They are more attractive and will not spread invasively like common milkweed. The article from the University of Vermont at the following link offers many details about monarchs and milkweed. https://pss.uvm.edu/ppp/articles/ monarch.html Our one-acre lawn is overrun with Creeping Charlie, and it is spreading daily. Is there a way to combat it without killing off the grass we’d like to save? Glechoma hederacea, better known as Creeping Charlie and ground ivy, is one of the most common and unfortunately hard to control lawn and garden weeds. A healthy lawn will help prevent creeping Charlie from getting established. Over-seeding bare spots in a lawn with an appropriate grass seed
will help crowd out the weed. Another strategy is to mow at a height of 3 inches. This allows grass to have healthier roots and blades as well as shade out weed seedlings. Hand weeding can be difficult and frustrating due to the fact that there are roots at many of the leaf nodes. If the soil is moist and you are careful to dig the roots, you will be more successful. Weeding them from garden beds is a lot easier. Removing them as soon as they show up is the key to success. A hoe, rake or dethatching tool can be helpful. If a herbicide is required, studies have shown that spring and fall are the best times to apply. More than a single season application may be needed. During the heat of the summer, plants are not growing as fast and not as susceptible to the effect of herbicides. These herbicides are directed at broadleaf plants, not grass, so are not likely useful in gardens or harmful to the grass. Lawn herbicides with multiple active ingredients are most effective against difficult to control weeds. Products that con-
tain triclopyr, such as Ortho Weed-B-Gon Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer have proven effective. So has Ortho Weed-B-Gon Max plus Crabgrass Control with quinclorac. Other brand products are available. Read the label for listed controls and application directions. Some information from http://erie.cce.cornell.edu/ resources/article-42-creeping-charlie-may-2017

DAIRY DIETARY GUIDELINES Low-fat or fat-free dairy options are recommended. Low-fat or fat-free products can quell common concerns about dairy products, including that they’re high in fat, calories and sodium. The organization American Bone HealthTM reports that low-fat or fat-free dairy products provide more calcium, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin D per calorie.

Dairy Ambassador Anna Lyness and CCE’s Ken Estes, Jr. Talk Livingston County Agriculture BY A M A N DA D U D E K
L
ivingston County’s story is, among other things, a story of agriculture. Its primary products include corn, soybeans, and dairy products, and it is one of the top five dairy producing counties in the country. It is no surprise then that dairy farming has been and continues to be a valued way of life for many local families. “Many of the farms in our county go back generations,” said Ken Estes, Jr., Agriculture Program Leader at the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Livingston County. “This is because some of the best soils in New York are right here in Livingston County. My family has been farming here in Caledonia since 1832, and we are not the oldest.” Estes credits Livingston County’s hilly terrain and the Genesee River which divides it with creating these higher quality soils. Taking advantage of the excellent soil and the abundance of water are our thriving local dairy farms. Anna Lyness, a York junior, is this year’s Livingston County Dairy Ambassador. Representatives were formerly known as Dairy Princesses; however, the program changed the title this year in an effort to be more inclusive. Lyness has been involved with dairy farming since she was a small child. “My dad is a dairy farmer at Donnan Farms in York,” she said. “As a child, I would go look at the cows and calves; it always mesmerized me.” Becoming what was then a Dairy Princess quickly became a goal for Lyness. “When I was little, we would always be invited to the Dairy Princess coronations,” she recalled. “I would look up to the girls in their crowns. I wanted to be a Dairy Princess and wear a crown, too.” Joining what is now the Dairy Ambassador Program when she was about 10 years old, Lyness is thrilled to be this year’s Dairy Ambassador. “Being a Dairy Ambassador is a leadership position,” she explained. “We promote dairy and educate people about dairy products and the nutrients they provide for people both young and old. We teach, participate in parades, work with young children, and much more.” To Lyness, dairy education is very important. “I think living around farms opens your eyes,” she said. “We need our food, including our milk. There are 13 nutrients we get from dairy, and it is very important to get them three times a day. It is also very important for everyone to understand where dairy comes from.”

Anna Lyness, 2022-2023 Livingston County Dairy Ambassador. While Lyness still enjoys dairy farming and hopes to work at Donnan’s feeding calves, she plans to use a scholarship she received to attend a nursing program at Keuka. Lyness shared that the Dairy Ambassador Program will hold two local events during Dairy Month, during which they will give away product samples, promotional products, and more. These two events will be held on Saturday, June 11th from 10am-Noon at the Tops in Dansville, and Saturday, June 18th from 10am-Noon at the Tops in Avon, respectively. “Livingston County’s number one industry is agriculture, and I hope that never changes,” said Estes. “That is why agricultural education and agriculture in the classroom are so supported and necessary. Agriculture is uniquely positioned to help seek solutions in those areas of the county that are considered ‘food deserts’ as we look for ways to get locally grown food in the hands of those who need it most.” Clearly, the dairy industry will continue to lead in these efforts.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.
CALEDONIA: 2818 McGovern Rd. Multi family June 17 & 18 (9-4pm) Household, nurses scrubs, tools, fishing equipment, clothes, wicker set. Tons of stuff. HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles How to Defend Against the Newest Scams They’re getting better at what they do, more sophisticated and slick ... scammers, that is. They’ve had lots of practice, and many are truly skilled, but what they all have in common is that they want your money and your information. Scams against seniors get worse by the year, and the pandemic hasn’t helped. Many of the current scams are COVID-related: A scammer will offer to send you a box of at-home test kits -- for a fee. A fake contact tracer will call and claim to need to know your Social Security number for identity purposes. Some will say that your latest doctor bill won’t be paid unless you give them your Medicare number. Others will claim to need your banking information so they can do a direct deposit of the stimulus money the government is sending you. Some are new for this year: Supposed Amazon employees will call or send email to warn you about a large purchase. Fake rental-assistance payment scammers will try to get your personal information. Far too many seniors are scammed each and every day. In 2020, seniors lost over $1 billion to fraud, with an average loss of over $9,000. But you can stop it for yourself and not be a victim. Feel free to be rude. Hang up on people who are likely scammers. Don’t even bother saying goodbye. Just slam the phone down. Delete emails that have any links without clicking on them. Don’t bother opening the door to people you don’t know. Use a black marker to cover the information on old pill bottles. Bonus Tip: Invest in a shredder. Look for one that does confetti cuts (small pieces instead of strips). Shred everything that has your name, address and account or credit card numbers. Even envelopes with your name and address can give clues to scammers. Shred them.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Fishing: Of course not all outdoor activities need to make seniors huff and puff. Fishing provides a great reason to get outdoors, and many individuals devoted to fishing report feeling less stressed after a day spent casting for their favorite fish. Individuals who consume what they catch also can benefit by improving their diets, as the American Heart Association notes that consuming certain types of fish has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and obesity.

Tips
1 Grasp the stem just above the berry between the forefinger and the thumbnail and pull with a slight twisting motion. 2 With the stem broken about one-half inch from the berry, allow it to roll into the palm of your hand. 3 Repeat these operations using both hands until each holds 3 or 4 berries. 4 Carefully place - don’t throw - the fruit into your containers. Repeat the picking process with both hands. 5

Drive in moderate weather. The software experts at Geotab note that cold weather affects EV range. Though battery thermal management systems have been designed to keep batteries within an optimal temperature range to minimize loss in battery performance, battery range is adversely affected when driving in extreme cold. Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. The National Association of Realtors says homeowners get about 73 percent of their replacement window investment back when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the home. It’s important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the divided light pattern (the number of panes in each window) with the original windows.

SEAMLESS GUTTERS • leak proof system
GUTTER PROTECTION SYSTEM • heavy gauge aluminum • fits over existing gutters • no roof penetrations required • eliminates cleaning
Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Look Into Crowdfunding to Rehome Inherited Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the person who “inherited” her relative’s pets but is unable to keep them. While directly posting the pets for adoption on social media may not be a good option for all of the reasons you previously listed, I do think there’s an opportunity for Sherrie to harness the reach of those platforms to raise the money she needs to get them rehomed properly and to cover their medical care. I’m continually amazed (and encouraged) by the kindness of strangers on GoFundMe pages for pets. -- Lauren P.

DEAR LAUREN: That’s certainly an option to cover the cost of their care. Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular way to quickly raise cash to cover pets’ medical needs and care needs. GoFundMe has dedicated a page with several ideas for pet funding: https://www.gofundme.com/c/fundraising-ideas/ pets, and there is even a pet-specific crowdfunding organization, Waggle: https://www.waggle.org, which helps owners raise money for pets’ medical procedures. To crowdfund a pet’s care and treatment, do plenty of research first. Look at active fundraisers to see what messages are effective and double-check the rules about pet fundraising at each crowdfunding site. To rehome a pet, there is at least one online resource that may be helpful. Adopt-A-Pet and Petco’s rehome service (https://rehome. adoptapet.com/) is a go-between service that helps owners connect with people who are looking to adopt. I still recommend that Sherrie contacts the local shelter to get information about rehoming or, if all else fails, surrendering the pets safely to the shelter. But the above options may be a great help as she hunts for new owners for her relative’s pets. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

What is Wrong The United States should stop sending all these billions of dollars to other countries to help their war efforts. Next, it will be troops. We have too many places that need that money here for food, health care, jobs...I could go on and on. The idea is we need our tax dollars here. The government can’t take care of the Veterans we have now. (I know because I am a disabled Veteran.) I see all the time how we are taken care of. We should get rid of all the rich politicians and put middle class Americans in their jobs! Also, I just heard that the shooter from the Buffalo shooting pled not guilty. Come on! Let’s get real and call a murderer a murderer, and stop all the nonsense!
Some Things Never Change Some people forget the past. Those who believe that disarming a society makes everyone safer, I believe, are those people. When this country was founded, guns were used against the government at the time, which had become too powerful, and was trampling on the rights of its subjects. The founding of our country was, in part, because the right of the citizens to keep their government in check, was of utmost importance. Through the centuries, history has shown us that when a society is disarmed, they become subjects of the ruling class. The most recent example has been China, where they have subjected the population to the heavy fist of control. Even though our government has more powerful weapons than its citizens, we’ve also seen how a determined population can defend and beat back mighty military forces, as has happened in Afghanistan. I have never had any one of my firearms injure anyone on its own. If inanimate objects are the problem, best to get rid of cars and booze.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

“Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld
Memorial Service For
David J Pettinger Virginia Beach/Livonia, passed suddenly at age 55 in Virginia Beach on November 20, 2021. David moved to Virginia where he acquired the electrical trade. A Memorial Service will be held at
First Baptist Church, 4738 S. Main St., Hemlock June 25th, 2022 • 11am Please join us to celebrate David’s life.
This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another. Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022
Jeffrey W. Young May 18, 2022 Jeffrey W. Young began his next journey on May 18th, 2022, from his home in East Rochester, NY. He was welcomed with lush peony bouquets by his mother, Carol Jean Young (Ophardt), whose spirit was ever present during his valiant fight. Those who wished him ‘bye for now’, and whose hearts will forever need mending, include his wife, Erica; daughter, Melody (Eric) Welch; grandson James Welch; father, Wayne; sister, Julie ( Jeff ) Iler; loving ex-wife Karen (David) Raz; in-laws: Jayne “Mom” and Rick Linderman, Aaron (Victoria Calarco) Linderman, Rochelle (Shad) Moyer, and Sari Rupp; nephews: Kamron, Cody, and Emmett; nieces: Mia, Kayla, Talia, and Ellsie; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many close friends he considered family. Jeff was an athletic and avid adventurer and outdoorsman. He found solice in the quiet of the mountains and forests. Camping with family and friends enabled him to share his passion. He generously chose smaller peaks and shorter miles for those less experienced. After climbing New Hampshire’s 48 high peaks he couldn’t wait to guide others through the same challenge. It was with warrior-like zeal that he trained for and completed races, marathons, and ultra-marathons on the trails, often with his “brothers” by his side. Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail was a life-long ambition of his, but after walking over 600 miles he vowed to return when he was better equipped physically and mentally. His loved ones are honored to carry him the rest of the way. Family and friends describe Jeff ’s gentle smile as infectious and memorable. He could never pass up an opportunity to make others laugh (even his oncologist) and always enjoyed a good joke. His child-like enthusiasm, natural joy, and playfulness was relished by young and old alike. Jeff was admired for his perseverance in his passions and throughout his illness. His genuine love, warm heart, and strong hugs will never be forgotten. Jeff ’s family and friends would like to extend their gratitude to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The sincerity, compassion, and devotion of the neuro-oncology team, and Roswell Park as a whole, was overwhelming. Thank you Roswell for your unmatched excellence and benevolence. We would also like to thank URMC Home Care for not missing one detail, enabling us to worry less and be present with Jeff. Thank you for showing him love in his last days. No formal services will be held. Family and friends will gather for a private remembrance at a future date. In lieu of cards, flowers, or gifts, honor Jeff by: planting a tulip tree – their unique leaves and beautiful flowers were alluring and delightful for him on his traverse of the Appalachian trail; take a hike – with Jeff in mind; do something you’ve been wanting to do, but have found excuses not to – tomorrows are never guaranteed; practice patience for those less fortunate than you – one day you may find yourself just like them; and love one another – a little kindness goes a long way when you’re struggling to draw the strength to carry on. Dream, Jeff, dream Of woods and trails and flowing streams mountain vistas in hues of blue and loved ones who are missing you Climb, Jeff, climb Sure-footed and strong, conquering craggy peaks Striding rocky trails bordered by wandering wildflowers Taking note, reveling in beauty despite your weariness longing for shelter, a place to rest We could not walk beside you to the summit, But trusted trail angels to guide the way Until we meet again one day Poem by Janet Olexy
Linda M. Young May 26, 2022 Conesus: At the age of 66, Linda M. Young peacefully passed away on May 26, 2022 with Rick, her loving husband of 36 years by her side. She is now happily reunited with her parents, Art & Norma Robeson, in heaven. She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard H. Young; her brother, Roby Robeson (Barbara); longtime friends, Pat and Randy Remming; her two nieces, Carrie Herring and Tina ( Justin) Jubert and their children, Collin, Lexi, Owen, Kaila, and Aiden. She is also survived by her “grand-dog,” Jemma; and friends, Pat and Julia Smith. Linda was a ball of sunshine and laughter. She radiated positivity and happiness. She loved the life that she and Rick built. They had many adventures on motorcycles and hot rods, fun vacations and good times with family and friends. Linda loved watching wildlife and enjoying her amazing views from the comfort of home. Her gardens always flourished and were bountiful. There wasn’t anything Linda couldn’t paint, create, or repurpose for her home. She loved finding treasures, creating art and painting just like her Dad. She could always see “visions” in crafting, cooking, gardening, and treasure hunting. She left a “Linda mark” wherever she was. Linda’s personality was contagious to everyone she met. She could bring a smile to your face, laugh along at you and with you. Her smile brightened the room, and she truly brought life to every party. She loved spending time with her great-nephews and great-nieces having Beanie Baby wars, bonfires, picking berries, taking walks, playing darts, and always having great laughs. She was proud of her family and all of their accomplishments. Although she didn’t have children, she loved her nieces and their children as her own. Even up to the last full day of her life, she was sure of herself and where life was bringing her. She is up with all her angels (human and canine), decorating for her next adventure and preparing for us. She will definitely know where “the free spot” is in Heaven and will be creating special works of art for us all. She will be sitting in her chair waiting until we call. www.AuctionZip.com Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Can She Donate Plasma Despite Gene Mutation?

DEAR DR. ROACH: When my mother discovered she has a factor V mutation, everyone in the family decided to be tested as a precaution. This is a hereditary item, which I am sure you know. It was determined that I carry the gene. I am 65. I have had no issues, and it probably never would have been discovered if we did not go looking for it. This was discovered over 10 years ago and is listed on all my charts. I would like to donate plasma for extra money. I am not on any type of blood thinners except for a baby aspirin every morning. I take a statin for cholesterol control. Can I donate my plasma? -- S.S. ANSWER: Factor V is a blood clotting factor made in the liver. A common mutation in the gene, called factor V Leiden, confers a small increased risk to developing blood clots. People with factor V Leiden and who have never had a blood clot are generally not started on medication to prevent one; however, they may need more aggressive prophylactic treatment to prevent clot at a time of surgery, for example. Although some experts use aspirin in this situation, there is not good evidence to support it. People with factor V Leiden may donate blood, platelets or plasma safely, as long as they are not on an anticoagulant such as warfarin. Only a very few medicines prevent people from donating blood. In addition to anticoagulants, these include medicines that can cause serious birth defects (such as Accutane, used for acne; finasteride and dutasteride, used for prostate enlargement and baldness; and Aubagio, a treatment for multiple sclerosis) and those which might cause infection risk (human-derived growth hormone).
GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Purchase eco-friendly accessories. A way to make a fitness routine more environmentally friendly is to purchase workout accessories that do not have large carbon footprints. Instead of single-use plastic water bottles, purchase a reusable water bottle made of recycled materials. In addition, opt for workout gear made of organic or recycled materials. Such items can be found online or at sporting goods stores or retailers that cater to outdoors enthusiasts.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Having a yard sale? Here’s a great way to put out extra signs when you don’t have a way to stake them into the ground: “Write your sign advertising your yard sale on the sides of a big box. Place it where you want it, and add a large rock to the inside, then tape shut. We did this when we had no poles to tape signs to or any other way to get them to stand up. It worked really well!” -- D.R. in Georgia * Avoid calling the pediatrician’s office on Monday mornings for routine business. Wait until the afternoon. All the parents with mildly sick children over the weekend will be calling to consult with the doctor and nurses first thing when the office opens. * If you drop an egg, sprinkle with salt before you attempt to clean it up. The salt binds the whites, which will not spread, making pickup easier!
Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

* “My kids had kind of an obsession with colorful Duck tape in the past year, and we made some “beach bags” to keep our electronics safe at the pool, lake and beach. We carefully covered a variety of sizes of zipper-top self-sealing bags with the tape, creating tough, colorful pouches in which we can store cellphones, etc., to keep them safe from water damage.” -- W.L. in North Carolina * You can sharpen scissors by cutting folded aluminum foil into small strips. * The best time of day to water your lawn is the evening. The cooler temperatures allow the water to sink into the soil instead of evaporating with the heat of the day. Always follow your city or county guidelines on watering times for your area. THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
