6 FACTS ABOUT WATERMELONS Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board. 1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center. 2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings. 3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August. 4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons. 5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated. 6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.

Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store. Page 4

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Close some social media accounts. Social media can be a useful tool to stay connected with family, friends and the local community. But those connections can be maintained through one or two social media platforms. That’s a lesson millennials or Gen Z-ers can take to heart, as the Global Web Index indicates that the average person has 8.4 social media accounts. Closing some social media accounts can reduce the temptation to pick up a device, ultimately paving the way to more time away from tablets, smartphones and laptops.

low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

Pet in Car
S E V RA
To the couple in a [local town] convenience store who were concerned that a dog was left alone inside a car: you looked as you walked by, but with shaded windows you couldn’t see inside. You even went into the store, and an employee asked around about who owns the car. My wife told her I was inside. I was sitting in the back seat with our pet. THANK YOU, to the couple and the store employee, for taking the initiative.
Stupid Idea On this morning’s news was the report of another mass shooting in a school in Texas. It was suggested by someone, who I believe must have stock in one of the gun-producing companies, that teachers carry guns. Great. That means that there would be more guns that can fall into the hands of someone who should never have access to a gun, such as the young man who killed all those children and teachers in Texas. I wish that there would never be another incident like what was on the news, but if it should happen again, it might prove to be best if all the victims were family members of those who are against gun control. Maybe that would change their thinking on the need for even greater gun control measures than have ever yet been presented to Congress. Public Obscenity The 1st Amendment states that obscenity is not protected under the rights to free speech. No one has a right to tell everyone in society, regardless of age, to f*** off! Little children are being forced to believe this is acceptable? Come on, folks. Speak up! Call your town’s supervisor and demand action. It is a community that sets the standard according to the federal obscenity laws, so let’s unite and set a better standard for our community. Our town has an ordinance against marijuana sales. We can do the same thing for vulgar, profane displays in yards. Remember the frog in the frying pan? We are not so desensitized that we accept being told [this] every time we drive down our main road, are we? The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, but you can do something. Please speak up!

Change it back! “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” That is the Second Amendment in our Constitution. It exists not because of hunting, or defending against foreign attack. The founders feared a standing army would present a clear and present danger to individual liberty: in other words, government tyranny. Guns are a necessary fabric to the security of a free state. Stereotyping I was taught stereotyping is morally and ethically wrong. I still believe that. Why is stereotyping in the media acceptable, and nobody seems to speak out? With a population of 300 million plus, Police Officers nationwide are “walking on eggshells” because of a few bad cops. Now, because one individual carrying out a horrific hate crime, [many] across our country are being stereotyped as racist and supremacist. In both examples, these crimes have been horrific and carried out by bad individuals. We need to stop the stereotyping all around. Stereotyping makes relations worse.

FAMILY CYCLING IS AN
Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

Kevin L. Mann June 12, 2022 Conesus: At age 21, Kevin passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at his home in Conesus, NY. He was born in Rochester, NY. Survived by his parents, Richard and Nichole Mann; his brothers, Nicholas G. Mann, Caleb M. Mann; and his grandparents, Hal (Tami) Mann, Linda Brockett (Tim Shepard) and Teresa Francart, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

Mary Mayoue June 9, 2022 Mary Mayoue, born June 11, 1925 died peacefully on June 9 at the Avon Nursing Home. She is survived by her son, George Mayoue; daughter, Ellen Mayoue; beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren and daughter-in-law. Her husband, Vince and sons, Vince, Mark and John predeceased her. Mary’s joyful personality, love of life, kindness and wisdom graced her family and many friends. Memorial donations may be sent to Livingston County Humane Society, Avon Free Library or St. Agnes Church. No services are planned. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Sharon was a kind and loving sister who cared for her younger siblings throughout their childhood. Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 19, 1917, during World War I, as a strong anti-German feeling within Britain causes sensitivity among the royal family about its German roots, King George V orders the British royal family to dispense with German surnames. He changed his own family’s surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles The Local Food Bank Needs Your Help If you’re on the other side of the fence -- able to donate to the food bank rather than visiting to use its services -- your local pantry can surely use your help. Running them is more complicated and expensive than it might seem! The food bank in my town gets most of its food from the main supplier in the state, which gets its support from philanthropists, business partners, manufacturers, producers, farmers and donors of both food and money. It then distributes food and supplies to the local food banks. The local food bank has to pay for what it receives, of course, with its own supply of cash donors and town support. In addition, there are local businesses that donate leftover breads and bakery items, farmers that bring in fresh produce and frozen meat, and folks in town who donate both cash and food. What food banks typically need: canned vegetables, fruit, soup, stews and beans; pasta, peanut butter and jelly; tuna, cereals and personal-care items like toothpaste and soap. But there are specialty items they need as well, things that are hard for the food banks to get: pet food and lactose-free milk, for example, that are very important to those who need them. (I’ve made it my goal to try to provide some of these items to the food bank each month.) If you’re in a position to help, search online for your local food bank to see what it currently needs, or make a phone call. Ask if it posts on a website or Facebook page. Your best bet, however, might be to donate money. Most food banks have more purchasing power at the store than we do; their dollar goes much further because they don’t pay retail. And they can use those dollars to target the specific needs of their clientele. Ask! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Add a small bit of boiling water to a glass of iced tea to clear it up if it is cloudy. You can do this to a pitcher just before serving.

* If you’re traveling with pets, you know you’ll need to bring something for them to drink out of. If you have ice in a container, they can lick the ice to stay hydrated, but it doesn’t slosh around or spill easily. * “Cutting corn off the cob can be tricky business, but you only need to recruit the right equipment. The next time you’re making corn for dinner, grab a Bundt pan. The corn cob gets set upright in the center, and when you cut down, the kernels fall right into the pan on all sides.” -- A.S. in Texas * “If you have trouble holding your cat still to clip its claws, sneak up while it’s asleep. You might get only a couple done before your cat catches on and wriggles away, but you’ll get there.” -- P.L. in Oklahoma (Slow and steady wins the race, P.L. Your tip works great for babies, too! -- JoAnn) * Skunk run-in? Try this mix before you buy pricey de-stink shampoos at the pet store. Mix a quart of 3% peroxide, a teaspoon or two of dish soap, 1/4 cup of baking soda and quart of room-temperature water. Apply to pet, and work deeply into the fur. Massage in for five minutes, and rinse thoroughly. * Boiling potatoes? Plants love starch. Let your cooking water cool, then use it to water the plants in your garden.

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics: 1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs.
ONLINE ONLY AUCTION Leicester Online Only Real Estate Auction
2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children. When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.

Many health insurance plans offer rebates to consumers who have memberships at fitness facilities and use those memberships a certain number of times in a set period of time. These benefits aren’t just ways to save money. They’re also powerful motivators to engage in preventive health care, which is one of the best ways for health care consumers to save money over the long haul.

Carbohydrates are seen as the enemy by many people looking to lose weight, but that reputation is ill-deserved for certain types of carbs. Carbohydrates referred to as “smart carbs” can boost energy and mood and help people, even dieters, maintain healthy weights. Smart carbs, which can be found in fruits, vegetables, minimally processed whole grain products such as brown rice and quinoa, and whole wheat bread among other foods, contain vital nutrients and fiber. The body takes longer to absorb whole grains than it does processed carbohydrates, stabilizing blood sugar and energy levels as a result. Because the body takes longer to absorb whole grains, feelings of satiety and fullness are extended. That reduces the likelihood of being hungry again shortly after eating, thereby helping people maintain healthy weights. Those who want to avoid carbohydrates should avoid products made with white flour, such as white bread, non-whole grain pastas, potato chips, and breakfast cereals with high amounts of sugar.

What Is the Optimal Blood Pressure? ---

pressure is 140/90, but I thought 120/70 was optimal. Has the standard number increased? – D.M.I. ANSWER: The “pressure” in “blood pressure” is given in millimeters of mercury. It is a measurement of the pressure inside large blood vessels, first at its peak during the left ventricle squeezing (the systolic, or top number) and then at its lowest, right before the ventricle starts squeezing again (diastolic, or bottom number). Both of these numbers are important, and they provide important information about the physiology of the heart and blood vessels, as well as provide prognostic information about the risk of heart attack and stroke. In general, for healthy people, the higher the numbers, the greater the risk. The optimum blood pressure for health is about 110/70, but there are some people with lower values who are also very healthy and who have very low risk for vascular disease. Risk for heart disease starts to go up more significantly at about 140/90, but above a systolic number of 160, the risk goes up even more dramatically. The trend in blood pressure control over recent years has been toward making the blood pressure closer to the optimum, as long as treatment is well-tolerated. Having a slightly lower risk of heart attack may not be worth it to a person who has significant symptoms from blood pressure medicines. Fortunately, blood pressure is much easier to control than it used to be with better medications and with non-drug treatments, such as stress reduction, healthy diet, regular moderate exercise and, for some people, salt restriction. ***

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My wife likes to pick up our dog’s hind legs to help him stretch; that is, she holds Cheerio by the hips so his hind legs are up off the ground while he stands on his front legs. I thought I read once that this is not good and strains the dog’s joints or back or something. Your advice would be appreciated. -- Zina J.
CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
DEAR ZINA: The “hip hold” is a safety grip to pull your dog away from a fight with another dog. It’s not a hold that should be forced or held for long periods. Stretching should be performed by owners when the dog’s joints are not weighted -- meaning the dog should not be standing or leaning on the leg being stretched. Holding Cheerio up by his hindquarters and forcing him to brace on his front legs puts him at greater risk for injury. It can cause great pain in older dogs with arthritis. If your wife would truly like to keep Cheerio’s joints healthy and improve his overall circulation and well-being, there are some great safe stretching methods, and safe massage techniques as well. Here’s a YouTube video of safe dog stretching exercises by a veterinary therapist: tinyurl.com/4ay7sfjc. Notice that at no point does the therapist stretch a joint that the dog is standing on -- they are all unweighted stretches. Dogs also stretch themselves frequently, especially when getting up after a long nap. Don’t try to assist their natural stretching -- dogs stretch in a way that’s comfortable for them. Therapeutic stretching and massage are designed to help facilitate a dog’s natural movement without placing stress on the joints. If you have more questions about your dog’s mobility, talk with the vet at his next checkup. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

THINK TICKS! Ticks spread disease. Take steps to protect yourself and your family. HOW TO AVOID TICKS • Wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily. • Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants. • Check clothes and skin often for ticks while outdoors. • Use insect repellent. • Walk on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas. • Bathe or shower within 2 hours after going indoors (to wash off and easily find ticks.) • Do a full-body tick check at the end of the day and remove ticks right away
HOW TO REMOVE A TICK • Using fine tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near mouthparts as close to skin as possible. • Pull tick in an upward, steady motion away from skin. • Clean the bite site with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. • Record date and location of tick bite. If a rash or flu-like symptoms appear, contact your health care provider as soon as possible. The risk of Lyme disease is lower if the tick is removed within 24-36 hours. FREE TICK REMOVAL KITS available to Livingston County residents (limited supply) For more information about tick borne diseases, please call or visit:

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest. Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion can take a toll on crops and livestock.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
