Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist themthat only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.

Robert Emmett Hayes

June 5, 2023

Avon - Bob passed away peacefully June 5, 2023 at age 77, surrounded by the love of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Janice Woleslagle Hayes; children, Tamara Sue Hayes, Cynthia (Patrick) Kostraba, Joshua Hayes (Kebra Horth); grandchildren, Aubrey Helchowski (Tasia Ortiz), Natalie (Adam) Burke, Jake Helchowski, Andrew Kostraba, Emma Kostraba, and Katie Helchowski; his siblings, Beverly Hilliker, William (Marti) Hayes,Barry (Rita) Hayes,Beth Ober (Brian Divine) and Barbra Dimock (Richard Rice); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was raised in Hartford, Connecticut, then attended RIT and made this area his new home. He loved Avon, the community and its members. Although his life-long career was in printing sales,he was also a dedicated part-time Avon Police O cer. Bob highly valued lending a helping hand to others and being of service to his community.

Lots of us have an affinity for the soil. Whether or not we have a “green thumb,” we enjoy working with growing things. We plant flowers that we expect to later delight us with their lovely, fragrant blossoms. We may plant a vegetable garden and hope to enjoy some truly fresh (and quite inexpensive) vegetables for our table.

The one who plants trees is thinking less of his own enjoyment than of his children or others who will benefit from the shade or the fruit from the trees for many years. Remembering those who planted the trees we enjoy today, let’s plant trees now for tomorrow.

Whatever a family chooses to pay for a funeral, we always render the finest, most considerate service possible.

He was a 50 year Avon Lion member and past President. He was also a member of Avon Masonic Lodge. Bob enjoyed spending time at his lake house, traveling with his wife Jan, winters in Arizona, and his camp in Hammondsport. Most of all he enjoyed listening to Jan play their piano. Bob absolutely loved his family and all of his dear friends. He frequently spoke of the many good times, memories, and blessings they all shared. e stories he told of his “adventures”are endless. His legacy continues on in those that are still told.

Family and friends are invited to call Friday, June 16, 2023 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, 350 Genesee St, Avon. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 2-5pm at the Avon Commons, 597 Collins Street, Avon. Memorials may be made in his memory to Research Foundation/Camp Abilities and sent to; Lauren Lieberman SUNY Brockport 350 New Campus Drive, Brockport NY, 14420 (www.campabilities.org)

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

How To Fix That Sticking Door

Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.

• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.

• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.

• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.

• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.

• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

TYPES OF FIREPITS FOR YOUR BACKYARD OASIS

It’s to know what is beneath the ground without having a property surveyed and marked. Digging without approval can result in damage to gas lines or water/sewer pipes. Always check with the utility company before digging trenches or holes.

Wood firepit: As their name suggests, wood firepits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fireplaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood firepits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and flames that’s synonymous with wood firepits.

Design A Garden For All Senses

Gardeners can dot their landscapes with aromatic trees, shrubs and flowersthatwillmakesteppingoutintothegardenthatmuchmorespecial. Some of the more fragrant plants include gardenia, dianthus, calendula, lavender, and jasmine. Shrubs such as fragrant pineapple broom, Anne Russell viburnum and Christmas box can add fragrance as well.

Vacationing With Young Children

Pack for the journey. Anticipate what your child may need, but remember, unless you are traveling to a remote location, there’s a good chance you can buy many items at your destination. Direct much of your focus on packing items you’ll need for the journey, and less on what you’ll need once you arrive. Food and entertainment are two key components to keep in mind.
