Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

UNDERSTANDING CATARACTS Cataract diagnosis and treatment: An eye doctor will examine dilated eyes to diagnose cataracts. A slit-lamp microscope can make it easier to spot abnormalities, states the AOA. The eye professional will consider age and the severity of cataracts to determine a treatment strategy. Early loss of vision due to cataracts may be mitigated by stronger lighting or a change in eyeglasses or contact lens prescription. Johns Hopkins says cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries. It is safe and effective. An ophthalmologist will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial, clear lens. If cataracts are present in both eyes, each surgery will be performed separately. A possible complication of cataract surgery is when a part of the natural lens that is not taken out during surgery becomes cloudy and blurs eyesight. This can be remedied with a laser treatment.

smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is current smokers who consider screening. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health. ***

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To halve a lot of cherry tomatoes, try sandwiching them between two plastic lids. Press down lightly and slice through the opening to make short work of them. * “To remove paint or stain from hands (even oil-based), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap -- no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water.” -- H.P. in Washington * Quinoa is becoming really popular as a grain alternative. It’s very small and requires rinsing before cooking to remove potentially bitter residue. Here’s a great trick to rinse your quinoa without losing half of it to the holes in your colander: Use a French press coffeemaker. The fine mesh and pouring spout make rinsing a breeze. -- JoAnn
Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
* “Candle nubs, that little bit left when the candle has burned down all the way, can be removed from a candleholder by setting the whole thing in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax surface hardens and shrinks, making it easier to chip out. The same goes for linens that have wax drips: freeze and chip away, then use a degreasing spot cleaner.” -- Y.G. in Arkansas * Fun get-together project for kids: Have everyone doodle on a large posterboard. At the end of the night, trace a puzzle pattern and cut it up, making a large floor puzzle. You can bring it out at the next play date. The smaller the children, the larger the pieces! -- A.L. in Florida * Easily thread a needle with hairspray. Spritz the end of the thread with a little high-hold hairspray and pull taut. It will be much easier to thread.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A New Jersey man bought a $5 bottle of orange juice, which his wife deemed too expensive and sent him back to return. He bought two Powerball lottery tickets with the refund and ended up winning the jackpot worth $315.3 million.
This note comes with many thanks… To my wonderful neighbors, friends, and my very caring family. I can't thank my son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Stephanie Perry enough for all the help with my estate sale and always being there for me when I needed you. Michael once told me I lived a good long life because of his sister/my daughter, Michelle Bruckel, because she kept me very active. My dear Michelle, people say we are like two peas in a pod, having the same interests and love of traveling, and she certainly included me in all of her traveling, including in and out out of state to see a lot of college hockey games for her youngest son. I can't thank Michelle enough for all she has done for me over the years. From the estate sale to taking me to my doctors' appointments and sometimes even just a ride and occasionally getting a bite to eat. All of this has been made possible with many thanks to Peter Bruckel who has been so kind and generous to me and allowing Michelle to use the service vehicle from Morgan Estates to take me on my trips. I want my family to live life to the fullest as I was able to do so by my choice. I chose the Conesus Lake Nursing Home to be in. With their determination and my perseverance, the physical therapy and occupational therapy staff here have gotten me to walk and write again. Yes, I wish I could go back home again, if only I could drive myself around and mow my own lawn like I did up until I was 87 years old. I will have my ups and downs as everyone does in life, but I can still advocate for myself. I have made some wonderful friendships since I've been here. I still have the wonderful love and support from my dearest friends and family, which have been so kind to me through my journey of being in hospitals and rehab facilities for the past year and a half. They have sent gifts, cards, called, and even visited me. I will do just fine - none of us will escape life without hardships. But sometimes it makes us stronger and better people. I am forever grateful for all acts of kindness bestowed upon me from my wonderful family and faithful friends.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE (NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.”
AUTO SECTION
3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save. 6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com. AUTOMOTIVE

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING A will is an important component of estate planning. Without clearly and legally spelling out your wishes, there is no guarantee that those wishes will be honored. It will be up to a state or province to make potentially lifealtering decisions that can impact your surviving family members, and the only way to ensure your wishes will be carried out is to put them into a will. Although men and women can write their own wills, many people prefer to seek the assistance of an attorney, who can make sure all necessary details are included in the will.
Sharon D. Burrus June 24, 2022
Whether serving his community and nation, or simply offering a helping hand, Norm devoted much of his life to helping others. A Vietnam veteran, Norm served in the U.S. Army, earning several service medals. For much of his career, Norm worked at the Livingston-Wyoming ARC where he trained people with disabilities to learn a vocation. Norm could also be found behind the wheel of the Geneseo Fire Department ambulance, where he proudly served for over 8 years, earning the William Haley Memorial Service Award. While volunteering for the Fresh Air Fund, Norm organized and offered less fortunate youth a more serene place to spend their summers. A Gathering to Celebrate Norm’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 9th, from 12:30pm-4:30pm at the Conlon-Mulvaney American Legion Post #1779, 6317 Marshall Road, Conesus, NY. All are welcome. The gathering will begin with a short service, including military honors, at 1pm. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Geneseo Fire Department, PO Box 428, Geneseo, NY 14454, or The Teresa House, 21 Highland Road, Geneseo, NY 14454.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.
Members Only Tour - Enjoy the Museum after hours during this behind-the-scenes experience! Join our tour guides for an insider’s look at the Museum. Spend time in the John L. Wehle Gallery learning about our extensive collection. Listen to our Curator discuss preservation efforts in the Historic Village. Enjoy the colors and smells of our heirloom gardens. Marvel in the research and skill it takes to fashion the costumes for our interpreters. Taste samples of the confectionaries created at the D.B. Munger Confectionery and our locally sourced craft beer.Held July 10, 4-5pm at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford. https://www.gcv. org/events/members-tour/

S E V RA Heroic Storm Cleanup Efforts Many thanks to the Geneseo Department of Public Works for their great work after the June 16th microburst. The storm hit at the end of the workday. Nevertheless, they stayed on the job until 1 a.m. Friday and were back at work at 6 a.m. We appreciate the hard work they do throughout the year, and they are doing a terrific job clearing up this devastation. Thanks also to the other villages’ crews who are helping.
Thank you, Matt at Strong ER Being stuck in a waiting room for hours is no fun for anyone. But then I watched waiting room ambassador Matt. He loves his job, and it shows. It’s refreshing and reassuring. He made my otherwise boring, horrible experience into a glimmer of hope. Thank you, Matt. I appreciate you, and I pray your employer recognizes the gem you truly are.
Gypsy Moth Control I’d like to address the property owners who have been having their forested areas sprayed (presumably for gypsy moths). Please be aware that, while the gypsy moth is an introduced and invasive species, this spray does not discriminate when it comes to killing all types of caterpillar larvae, including those of native butterflies and moths. These caterpillars are a vital food source to migrating as well as breeding populations of birds. Adult birds feed heavily on all types of caterpillars, and they are an important food source for nestlings as well. Although the gypsy moth larvae do defoliate trees, most deciduous trees can withstand several defoliations and still recover, as evidenced by the lush foliage this spring after defoliations last year. Gypsy moth populations go in cycles, and we are on the downward trend of this latest outbreak. So please think twice before treating your property and negatively impacting our native birds, butterflies and moths. Reviews Is this the new trend? More and more reviews are requested after purchases, quality, services, etc. When you give an honest review, you get contacted back with a not-sofriendly response: “You’re wrong, that didn’t happen, you expect too much,” etc. To practically demand all reviews be 5 star with no criticism, even though it could be good criticism, only makes their integrity worse! To deny or discourage critiques is nothing short of a disservice to your customers. Backing Out I hear you when you say you were backing out of a space at a grocery store and people just continue to walk right behind you without even looking side to side. It happens to me all the time. I question people about that and ask them why they do that and they say, “Well, I have the right away.” But why don’t they look? And as far as it being your fault, it probably will be because you’re backing out and because people have the right of way. They know this. Again, I have been in motion, and people walk quickly right behind me without looking or stopping.
Thank you, Twisters & McDonalds! A huge shout out to Twisters of Livonia and to McDonalds in Lakeville for their continued sponsorship of the Livingston County Baseball/ Softball Camp. Each year, they donate ice cream to all the camp kids! Jeff at Twisters is awesome to work with, and Jessie at McDonalds is amazing, too! We appreciate all they do for our community and camp! - Livingston County Baseball/Softball Camp Staff

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our beloved guinea pig died suddenly this morning. I’m not sure what happened, and because there is no veterinarian near us who can treat guinea pigs, I’m searching for an answer. He developed an ear problem recently that was causing him to tilt his head, and to treat this, we were giving him Nurokind and 5 ml of water through a syringe. This morning, he started to hiccup, and an hour later he passed away. Is there any clue that you can provide as to why? -- N. Dwarakanath
"Honored and Humbled to be named the Top Realtor in the Genesee Valley's Readers' Choice. Greatly appreciate your continued trust and confidence." - Robbin Smith, Associate Broker, Empire Realty Group
We are excited to announce the opening of our new Honeoye office at 9 Honeoye Commons where we welcome Nick Carrier & Craig Ruane to our Empire team!
Visit us at one of our three locations! 31 Main Street, Livonia, NY 14487 • (585) 346-2222 2 Milton St., Dansville, NY 14437 • (585) 335-SOLD (7653) 9 Honeoye Commons, Honeoye, NY 14471 • (585) 229-1054 MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress, assembled in Philadelphia, formally adopts Richard Henry Lee’s resolution for independence from Great Britain. The vote was unanimous, with only New York abstaining.
DEAR N.: My sincere condolences on the loss of your guinea pig. They’re such wonderful pets. When guinea pigs get sick, it can be difficult to figure out the exact treatment. Head tilt is one of those illnesses that could be an ear infection but could also be something more serious like pneumonia or another infection. I’m a little curious about using Nurokind (Mecobalamin) to treat the illness, as it is a treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency in humans. Perhaps a guinea pig owner out there can respond with the answer. Keeping your guinea pig hydrated was good, as this helps them when they’re stressed out or sick. When an illness is prolonged in guinea pigs, the stress and pain make them weaker, and they begin to experience other problems. The hiccupping is usually a sign of indigestion in healthy guinea pigs, but even for them, it’s very uncomfortable and stressful. That may have been the last straw for his system. I wish I could give you a definitive answer. Because there is no qualified vet near you, I encourage you to search online for guinea pig owner forums, as they are a very supportive and informative community. Send your questions to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES (NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.
Sitework: Residential and Commercial Paving: Driveways Concrete Work: Sidewalks, floors, slabs, patios Firewood • Snowplowing Cell: 507-7591

PO Box 15, Conesus, NY 14435
Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money. How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment.
Seasoned Firewood Log loads available. Also buying standing timber. Take advantage of placing wood orders before the fuel prices increase.
585-721-3770 We deliver • Can provide large quantities
You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Revisiting Seniors-Only Grocery Shopping If you’ve been depending on grocery delivery or curbside pickup for the past two years, you might not know this: Many stores are continuing to have seniors-only hours. I’d tried going to seniors-only hours once two years ago ... but only once. The whole virus/pandemic was so new to us that we assumed that we must shop and stock up for all eventualities, leading to widespread shortages. The crowds that day were so massive that the line went across the front of the store, down the side and to the back. Store personnel were stationed at the door with counters in their hands, only allowing in a set number of shoppers. When I saw a friend coming out, I asked: “What’s it like in there?” The answer: “It’s a nightmare. People are grabbing 10 of everything. Do not go in.” And I didn’t. Recent queries among friends who use seniors-only hours indicate that things are much, much better now in terms of crowds. We know that many items are chronically out of stock. We acknowledge that COVID is still around, and we wear masks. We don’t expect much in the way of variety in our diets unless we luck onto a full shelf of food. Many of us, however, haven’t been to a seniors-only hour for a very long time, if ever. We depend on delivery and curbside pickup. If you’re ready to try seniors-only shopping, call your local grocery and retail stores. While fewer stores are now offering it, some still do. It might be every day before the regular opening, or it might be one or two very early days per week. Take your hand sanitizer and wipe down the cart handles. Wear a mask. The bonus, I’m told, is that’s when fresh vegetables and fruit are put out, and the overnight stock clerks have loaded the shelves. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS
HOURS: MON.-FRI. 9-6, SAT. 9-4, CLOSED SUNDAY
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. DID YOU KNOW?
Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

Independence Day Reflections BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he 4th of July is a favorite holiday for many—including me! And there are few better places to celebrate July 4th than in the Finger Lakes. Fireworks, rings of fire (wherever there’s a lake!), carnivals, field days, and similar celebrations abound. Perhaps most importantly, families gather together to eat and enjoy each other’s company. This is perhaps the first truly post-pandemic year families will join together for Independence Day. As families gather, sadly, several faces may be missing. Yet, their memories will always be cherished and honored. The pleasure of once again gathering together will no longer be taken for granted as we take this opportunity to hold our loved ones close. This is also the first year several events have returned after the pandemic heights of 2020. The Covid pandemic generated more conversation around the concept—and the practical application—of freedom than there has been in some time. The tension surrounding questions of freedom made for many disagreements; resolutions for many of these questions have yet to be reached. While these decisions continue to develop, it may be a good time to reflect on what we do NOT have, rather than disagreements over what we do have. We do not, for example, have a fear of becoming civilian casualties of a war raging on American soil. The tragic conflict in Ukraine has given sharp contrast to the relative peace and security enjoyed in the United States. Surely, the value of freedom from such local devastation cannot be overstated. We also do not have restrictions on what we can learn and believe. In the United States, it is not illegal to peacefully hold and declare one’s own political, religious, moral, and
otherwise ideological persuasions. Peacefully, we are able to educate ourselves and our children as we see fit, worship if and how we see fit, and pursue any career we choose. Whether rented or owned, we, as United States citizens, do not have the fear of legally being driven out of our own homes, having our property confiscated, or having our family members harmed or stolen away. While conversations continue regarding potential changes to existing immigration legislation, it is important to recognize the guarantees of relative safety which make United States citizenship so desirable. Finally and crucially, we are free from the fear of having our families forced apart. Even the briefest glance through history, and into some countries around the world today, shows that this has not always been—and is not always—the case. Families have been divided by slavery, war, forced labor, conscription, genocide, and more. The United States hasn’t always been free of these things, but today, legally as United States citizens, we have a reasonable expectation that our families will remain together as long as we wish. For these reasons and so many more, the United States of America—with all her faults—is still something to celebrate. Our country may not be perfect, but we the people continue to have the power and freedom to improve it. That’s something to be grateful for this 4th of July—and to remember every time we have the opportunity to vote—both locally and nationally. So, happy 246th birthday, United States of America, and thank you.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

OTHER DID YOU KNOW? Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

Gardeners How do I get rid of spiny sow thistle and Canada thistle? Spiny sowthistle is a winter annual that is actually in the sunflower family and not a true thistle. Spiny sowthistle spreads by seed. It flowers from late spring through the summer, depending on the location. The flower is yellow, resembling a dandelion, but forms in a corymbiform cluster. The root of spiny sowthistle is a taproot. It is found in waste areas and other open areas such as roadsides and thin turf. It can be controlled by mowing which prevents the stem and flowers from forming and eliminates seed formation. The plant can also be cut out. A postemergent herbicide application is effective when spiny sowthistle is young and actively growing but
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County should not be needed if the location will be mowed. For best results, treat prior to bolting. Canada Thistle is a rhizomatous perennial. Since Canada thistle has a deep root system, the only mechanical approach for controlling this weed is to exhaust the storage roots (exhaust perennial roots). Food reserves in the roots reach a minimum in June and then increase as food flows from the shoots to the storage roots. Consequently, shoots should be removed for the first time by early June. Mowing or repeated cutting may be used to help prevent the production of seeds and starving the plant. Persistent removal of the shoots be-
fore they attain several leaves will exhaust the storage roots within two years and eliminate the weed. One study found a 21 day weeding schedule was optimal. Postemergent applications of a systemic herbicide may be used. Fall is typically the best time for these treatments when the plant is translocating food reserves to the rooting structures. Other good times are during the early bolting stage when plants
are 6-10” tall and during the bud to flowering stage. Some of the common lawn weed control materials are effective. Spot treatments are good for limited stands. Glyphosate products labeled for the use are effective. Lawns should be properly maintained to promote a healthy, dense turf that with managed mowing will compete well with weeds.
