GO GREEN WHEN SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I am writing this letter to convey my most deep and sincere appreciation for the incredibly supportive help I received during an emergency at my home in early June. Words cannot express my gratitude to Mike Kellogg, my neighbor who was there for me and went above and beyond to ensure my safety as well To those who are defending flying the Confederate flag: It is the 21st century, not the 19th. Regardless of your reasons for flying the flag, it has come to represent white supremacy. By flying it you are self-identifying as and aligning yourself with these terrorist groups, intentionally or not. It’s like flying a swastika and claiming you are not a Nazi sympathizer. Good luck with that. Then there is the issue of the Civil War ending over 150 years ago as did the Confederacy, so what’s your point? It’s time to let it go and move on. It’s not like you were around then and had a personal investment in the Southern cause. There is no place for the Confederate flag in the 21st century, save for in history museums. Mike, your continued support and selfless acts of kindness to make things easier for me has not gone unnoticed; I am forever in your debt. To my family of 47 years at Graham Manufacturing, thank you for your love and kindness and inquiries, you are all unsung heroes in my book. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Lance Frens On the evening of June 12, 2019, my cat Kitten got hit by a car on Black Street Rd. in LeRoy. I would like to thank the lady kids could not play on a privately-owned, church playground: Empathy has nothing to do with it. That play equipment belongs to the church. I expect they are not in a position to maintain it for public use nor take on any liability for misuse. Having special needs does not mean your children are allowed to play with items that aren’t theirs. There are plenty of public play spaces.

Not only for winning the Medal of Honor but additionally to your community service via radio show and support for local Veterans. As a Retired Veteran myself, you gave me “goose bumps” watching the presentation. Well done! I wanted to write a short note to express my appreciation for you and everything you do to help with There are so many liability reasons that they would not want to make it open to the public. the VEC morning routine. For the past two years, I have been amazed by the skill and commitment with which you do your job while I have dropped off my daughter and son for PreK. You keep everyone safe, while moving traffic along to help those, like myself, get to work. You are always smiling and greeting the parents and students, even if it’s just with a friendly wave. Thank you for coming to work each day to keep the children and parents safe. We are very grateful and lucky to have such committed members of the Victor School District. With gratitude, Liz Fannin; mom to Harper and Ryan
a disrespect to the United states and its people. To the person who hit my neighbors’ little dog on our very busy street: I want you to know it wasn’t your fault. You probably should have stopped, but I get it, you may be a high school kid and were scared. My neighbors have regularly let the dog roam our neighborhood for years. Their previous dogs as well. They were reported many times to the dog warden but continued to subject us to their dog’s urine and feces. People need to wake up and be responsible for their pets and be considerate to neighbors. I am just glad I didn’t see it happen.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far. When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

OTHER RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Scofield Rolloff • 343-8383 Did you know? The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday since 1941. Though that may seem like a long time for the country to wait to celebrate the independence it declared in 1776, the tradition of the Fourth of July, often referred to as Independence Day, dates back to the dawn of the American Revolution and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, July 4th has been recognized as the dawn of American independence, and celebrations that included fireworks and parades can be traced back to the 18th century. On July 4, 1777, the city of Philadelphia, which would become the first capital of the United States of America, held the first annual commemoration of American independence, and exactly one year later George Washington ordered that all of his soldiers be offered double rations of rum to commemorate the anniversary. In 1781, Massachusetts was the first state to make July 4th an official state holiday, and the day was actually declared a federal holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1870. However, that declaration did not grant a paid holiday to federal employees. That benefit came in 1941, which is why that year is now recognized as the first year when the Fourth of July officially became a federal holiday.

On July 19, 1884, President Chester Arthur issues a proclamation that grants him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the U.S. to avoid the spread of “pestilence” (tuberculosis). On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bringing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels. On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate. On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over.

Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep • Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. • Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

Health Benefits Of Plant-Based Nutrition (NAPS)—As people continue to look for ways to live healthier lifestyles, the plant-based diet continues to gain momentum. A plant-based diet describes a way of eating in which there is an emphasis on plant foods in the form of colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Supporting Your Health with Plant-Based Foods Benefits of eating more plant foods are numerous. Plant foods are nutrient dense, which means that they provide an abundance of nutrients relative to their calorie cost. Fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains are terrific sources of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and they’re naturally cholesterol-free. Most contribute a fair amount of fiber, too, so they help to fill you up and keep your digestive tract running smoothly. When you include plenty of these nutritious, filling foods in your diet, it leaves less room in your stomach for less healthy fare. That said, as the proportion of U.S. consumers who adhere to a vegan diet grows, so does the desire for these people to get more protein. In fact, a Nielsen HomeScan survey recently found that 39 percent of Americans are actively trying to eat more plant-based foods and 60 percent want to get more protein in their diets. Identifying Sources of Plant-Based Proteins The major sources of plant-based protein include beans, peas and lentils but whole grains are also important. You may think of whole grains as more of a carb than a protein and that’s true—most grains have more carbohydrate calories than protein calories. But whole grains contribute important essential amino acids to the diet. Most vegans know that in order to get the full complement of essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins in the body), it’s important to consume both legumes (beans, peas, lentils) and whole grains. Soy is one of the few complete plant-based proteins, meaning it contains the nine essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. How Much Protein Is Right For You? Protein is important for maintaining lean body mass. Susan Bowerman, Registered Dietitian and Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition says the Institute of Medicine recommends you eat 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories from protein. You can estimate your protein needs based on your current body weight. Simply, multiply your body weight by 0.7. The number you get is a reasonable target for the amount of protein, in grams, that you should eat each day. For instance, a woman who weighs 140 pounds should aim for about 100g of protein a day. A 220-pound man should shoot for at least 150g of protein. Introducing Other Plant-Based Proteins While most plant-based diets place an emphasis on whole foods, other plant-based foods that are derived from these whole foods can be included. So, in addition to legumes and whole grains (brown or wild rice, oats, quinoa, millet and the like), other sources of plant-based protein include soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and protein powders made from plant sources such as soy, pea, rice, hemp, oats or quinoa. To help, Herbalife Nutrition’s Formula 1 Select and Protein Drink Mix Select are two new plant-based nutrition mixes specially formulated with a high-quality blend of pea, quinoa and rice proteins. Formula 1 Select is specially formulated to provide an excellent balance of protein and other key nutrients for optimal nutrition, is an easily digestible source of high-quality plant protein and fiber, and contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners. from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Where is a good place to buy milkweed seeds? – Bonnie Milkweed seeds may be purchased most readily from online sources including Prairie Moon Nursery, where I have been satisfied with my purchases. There are several varieties of milkweed native to the northeast. I would recommend butterfly weed (ASCLEPIAS TUBEROSA) as most appropriate for a home garden. Some people grow common field milkweed (ASCLEPIAS SYRIACA), but it has deep rhizomes (roots) that will spread over a large area.
I would like to plant some native flowers to attract butterflies and birds. Where do I get a list of such plants that are good for this area? – Bonnie There are so many interesting and beautiful native plants to choose from. The Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, website flnps.org, has an
exhaustive list of native plants in a 25-page printable list entitled “Native Plants Suitable for Wildflower Gardens & Meadows or Traditional Gardens in the NY Finger Lakes.” It is divided into 5 categories – 1. Herbaceous Plants-Annuals, Biennials, Perennials; 2. Ferns & Fern Allies; 3. Grasses, Sedges, Rushes; 4. Vines; 5. Shrubs & Trees.
Amanda’s Garden, Native Perennial Nursery. It is located in Sparta, NY (Dansville mailing address), at a beautiful site on Story Rd south of Hemlock Lake. The website is amandasnativeplants.com and contains an “Our Plants” section which includes images of native plants with brief descriptions. You can also sign up for their newsletter in which Anyone in our area interested they cover many aspects of native in native plants should know about perennial gardening.

Discover Reforestation and Rewilding at 100 Acres By Janet Chaize and Carol Barnett
I
n 2018, the Rush Recreation and Park Association (Rush RPA), a non-profit and tax-exempt organization, was formed by a group of Rush residents to protect green space and public land in Rush. Consisting of a group of residents who volunteer their time to preserve and enhance the wild nature of Rush while helping others to enjoy its wild spaces, the Rush RPA held a series of forums from 2018-2019 on such topics as pollinators, birds, forest bathing, the importance of protecting forests, organic farming and community green space. “This month, we are inviting everyone to join at the 100 Acres of the Rush Riverside Refuge for our next event, “Reforestation and Re-Wilding Solutions for any Outdoor Space,” on Saturday, July 27th, 9am-noon,” said Rush RPA board member, Janet Chaize. The rain date is set for Sunday, July 28th. The Hundred Acres is located at 250 Rush Scottsville Rd. (Route 251), west of the intersection with East River Road, on the north side of 251, and was donated to the town to be used as a green space. “30% of the 100 acres are in fields that have been farmed,” explained Chaize. “Our foundation, designed to help our municipality, has been working with the town to transform it.” Reforestation participants will gather just west of the entrance to the Railroad Museum. Guests may park on the side of the road or on a large grassy area opposite the Railroad Museum. “Be careful crossing the road if you use that option,” advised Rush RPA board member Carol Barnett. “Dress for changeable weather and to avoid ticks in any grassy areas.” Guests will examine nature’s way of re-wilding fields, using proven principles and methods from permaculture. These solutions can be applied to outdoor spaces of any type and size, from homesurban and suburban-to municipalities and outlying farms, fields and forests. Guests are invited to explore ways in which forests regenerate water, produce food and restore the eco system.
A view of the Genesee River along part of the 100 acres property.
The fields, if returned to nature, could become a mix of meadow and forest very appealing to wildlife and birds.” “A walk among trees is rejuvenating, nourishing and healing,” Barnett observed. “Trees and forests are essential to all living things, and there is a lot going on in the forests that we can’t see.” Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and release oxygen. They prevent or reduce soil erosion and water contamination while their roots serve as natural nets spreading extensively into the ground to hold the soil in place. As soil runoff is prevented, essential nutrients are retained, and the soil remain fertile. Trees add compost to the soil from falling leaves and dried branches. Old growth forests, in particular, help trees have resilience in dealing with disease, drought and overly wet conditions. New research has also discovered trees’ incredible underground root system which allows trees to communicate with and support each other. “Trees send messages to each other to determine which trees need what nutrients,” said Chaize. “Research in Canada showed that birch trees sent carbon to fir trees when fir trees were shaded, and in the winter, when the birch were leafless, the firs sent carbon to the birch trees!” “We hope to transform 100 Acres into something beautiful, adding more trails to benefit those in Monroe County, Livingston County and beyond,” said Chaize. “We are also hoping that to engage colleges like RIT and SUNY Brockport which are concerned with the Genesee River.” The Rush RPA is also interested in grants to further its efforts. Those interested in - Janet Chaize hiking, bird watching, wildlife identification, reforestation, pollinators, “Eastern prairies,” composting and other nature-based pursuits are encouraged join the Rush RPA and attend its events. Sign up for the 100 Acres event is requested but not required. There is no cost, but donations for presenter Kay Megorden-Staten will be gratefully accepted. To learn more, read our mission or become a charter member, visit rushrpa.org.
We have the opportunity to create something really special.
An aerial shot of the field portion of the 100 acres.
“Our presenter, Kay Megorden-Staten, is certified in Permaculture Design and is a Teacher, Herbalist, Artisan, Consultant and Designer,” said Chaize. “With her, we will discuss an ecosystem’s water, soil, wind, sun, contour, polycultures, invasive species, biomass, plants and habitats. We will also identify natural patterns in the landscape that will be used to guide our decisions for restoring a resilient landscape with multi-functions.” The special beauty of the Hundred Acres of the Rush Riverside Refuge already includes old growth forest, diverse flora and fauna, and views of the Genesee River. 100 Acres, which extends for a mile along the Genesee River and contains about 50 acres of forest, much of which is old growth and 50 acres of a mix of fields, hedgerows and trees, plays a delicate role in the region’s ecosystem and is part of the Lake Ontario watershed. “We have the opportunity to create something really special right here in Monroe County,” explained Chaize. “Experts from Cornell have confirmed that some old growth trees are over 100 years old.

THE “GOOD DEATH” “I would rather be a poor man in a garret with plenty of books than a king who does not like reading…” ~ Macaulay
The person who loves to read is never alone…he has his choice of good friends, all available in the pages of books. Reading gives unlimited access to every point on earth, or even into far corners of the universe. The man who has plenty of books is wealthy…wealthy in terms of travel, of adventure, of knowledge that he can put to use in countless ways. He is much better off than others, even a mighty king, who have never learned of the satisfaction to be found between the covers of a book. We take great pains to arrange all floral tributes so as to obtain the full beauty and the most pleasing overall effect. No detail is overlooked.

While many people shy away from contemplating the inevitability of death, increasing numbers of individuals and groups are discussing dying well. This topic is most likely to be directly addressed in hospice and palliative care settings, when dying individuals and their families are confronted with end-of-life decisions. It is also a common topic among those who want to ensure that the quality of life in their last days will be consistent with their wishes. Accordingly, a team of researchers has identified core elements that should be considered when contemplating a “good death.” They are: preference for a specific dying process, a religious/spiritual element, emotional well-being, life completion, dignity, family, quality of life, and a relationship with a health provider. Families with a loved one in hospice care understand that the passing of their loved one is close at hand. Given the likelihood of an impending death, families will often want to prepare for the funeral ahead of time. If you are interested in learning more about the services we offer, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We serve families at their time of need providing personalized, compassionate, and professional funeral services. Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.
Beatrice A. Cottrell “Arlene” July 13, 2019 Geneseo: At age 88, Arlene passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was born in Nunda, NY to the late Raymond and Lillian Schmidt. Arlene was predeceased by her beloved husband; George R. Cottrell, her sons; Robert L. Cottrell and James R. Cottrell. Survived by her children; Christopher G. (Sandy) Cottrell, George J. Cottrell, and Catherine M. (Carmello Sofia) Cottrell, her grandsons; Seth (Sarah) Stramonine, Jeremie (Amanda Loretto) Stramonine, and Cody Cottrell, her 6 great grandchildren, and her beloved cat, “Tigger.” Arlene was a graduate from Victor High School, where she met her dear friend Fran Bowe. Fran and her were two peas in a pod and have remained very close friends through all of these years. She worked for nearly 40 years for Mobile Chemical where she made many friends that she has kept in contact with since retirement. Cate and Mel will greatly miss their weekly Uno championships with Mom. In keeping with Arlene’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
Most insurances accepted.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family get-togethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

clean water. I had to boil water and drink it without any treatment tablets. That evening, I had painful cramps in my stomach, and in my upper abdomen, under my ribcage. Since then, my digestion has been horrific. I have constant rank gas and bloating when eating foods I’ve never had a problem with before, even fruits and vegetables. I have been a big eater of probiotic foods, with no digestive disturbances. However, since this incident, any form of probiotic, whether from capsule or natural foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, gives me the worst gas and bloating I’ve ever had. I had parasite and bacterial stool testing done with my doctor, and I came up clear. I feel like I need antibiotics or something to clear whatever is going on with my digestive system, but I’m hesitant because I have had four rounds of antibiotics in 2017 from surgeries. I am worried about “beaver fever.” What do you recommend? -- A.L. ANSWER: There are several infections one can get from drinking unprocessed water while camping. “Beaver fever” is a name for infection from the parasite Giardia lamblia, which is found in water where animals (especially beavers) are found. It’s a reasonable thought -- it’s one of the few waterborne infections that can persist for months. However, I think Giardia is unlikely. Symptoms from Giardia normally begin one to two weeks after exposure, and the parasites are killed very rapidly by boiling water. Your symptoms are very much like irritable bowel syndrome, and I do wonder if it might have been triggered by some event that day you were camping. Usually, three sets of cultures for parasites are done to make sure there isn’t an unwelcome guest in your intestine causing symptoms. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice to help you track down an identifiable cause and to get some symptomatic relief. Antibiotics are not recommended without knowing what you are treating. ***

immediately put on Lipitor and Plavix. The statin drugs made my arms and shoulders ache, and the doctor tested me and found no reason for it. He said anecdotally that he had many patients who complained of the same thing. He then put me on fenofibrate. The pain stopped immediately. Now he says new research shows that any cholesterol-lowering drug makes the blood tests show lowered cholesterol levels but it does not prevent heart attack or stroke. So he took me off it. I wonder if you know anything about this study that said there was no benefit to taking statins. I did not really understand what he said. -- G.C. ANSWER: It sounds like the message got a bit confused. The evidence that statin drugs reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk, such as those who have had a previous event, is very strong. However, the evidence for fibrate drugs, such as fenofibrate, is much weaker. Statin drugs often cause some muscle aches. Pravastatin and fluvastatin are least likely to cause this problem, so it’s worth a try switching, in my opinion. Some people get relief from muscle aches with a CoQ10 supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. LIVONIA CENTRAL SCHOOL
RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB
PO Box E, Livonia, NY 14487 585-346-4000 ext. 4100
Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.
Livonia is also looking for qualified substitutes for SY2019-20 in all areas:
Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Aides, Nurses, Maintenance, Food Service, Bus & Van Drivers Please send Non-Instructional Application to address above. AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY/AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EMPLOYER
