* In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

title symbols summarize skimming main idea inference annotations setting re-read

It was invented by the native-born people of Middle and South America, who called them "hamacas," in the Taino language. Columbus first encountered the hammock in the Bahamas. He observed in 1492 that “people were sleeping in nets between the trees." He brought the hammock back to Europe where sailors started using them extensively because swinging while suspended in the air led to better sleep than they were previously experiencing on the dirty ship floor.

PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

Install a low-flow shower head. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful and costly. Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.

HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON Outdoor fabrics are derived from different materials. However, this general-purpose recipe, courtesy of the DIY Network, may help clean many outdoor fabrics. Mix 1 teaspoon dishwashing detergent, 1 quart warm water and 1 tablespoon borax together. Saturate a sponge and use it to wash the cushions. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then spray it off with a high-force hose. Stand the cushions on their edges to dry outdoors.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS Introduce a fireplace. Fireplaces were once hot commodities, but that popularity waned in the 1970s and 1980s. Homeowners with chimneys may discover a fireplace was boarded over and the bare bones still exist that can be renovated to bring back character. There also are ventless freestanding units that are quite affordable that can mimic the look of a built-in fireplace. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Place sprinklers correctly. If you do not have an in-ground irrigation system and don’t intend to install one, you will likely use lawn sprinklers to water the lawn. When placing these sprinklers, turn them on and then document their trajectory before moving on to the next area. You want to make sure the water from the sprinklers is not landing on sidewalks, patios or streets, especially if your community typically institutes drought restrictions that limit how much you can water. In such instances, you’ll need to make the best use of the water you’re allowed to use, so make sure none of it is watering the driveway.

(585)243-3661 Logging • Lumber • Forestry • Millwork FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING CARPET There are many different types of carpeting, some of which are best suited to certain situations. For example, plush and saxony carpets are better in low-traffic areas. These carpets may show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the comfort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, which is more flat and dense, helps mask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Children tend to accumulate toys and games. And as kids grow from children to young adults, their list of must-have items from video gaming systems to other electronics - grows along with them. Storage can make a room functional for both adults and children. Devote an entire wall to a closet or drawer system where toys can be stored out of sight when necessary. Storage ottomans can be used for extra seating while also providing somewhere for homeowners to stash stuffed animals or games for easy access. When choosing furniture, look for fabrics that are resistant to stains and modular pieces that can be moved around as necessary to create room for playing or entertaining.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings Gold Standard Publication

Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

EKG Test Result May Be a Sign of Heart Block ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently had an EKG that showed first degree heart block and “inferior infarct, age undetermined.” What does that mean? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t get worse? I will be seeing a cardiologist in a few months to get an exercise stress echo. What is that? -- C.P. ANSWER: The EKG uses the electrical activity in the heart to give important information about the structure and function of the heart. Although it is a very useful test, it isn’t perfect. “First degree heart block” just means that the electrical impulse in the heart is a little slow. By itself, it is not concerning, but it does suggest there is a risk of other heart problems, such as second or third degree heart block. These sometimes do need treatment (a pacemaker). It’s something to keep an eye on, but it’s possible to have first degree heart block for decades without progression. An “infarct” is a heart attack. The EKG has characteristic findings of heart attack, which can be localized to a particular part of the heart. In your case, that is the bottom part of the heart, which is supplied by the right coronary artery. This type of heart attack is often complicated by first degree heart block, which may explain why you have that result. A stress test looks for damage to the heart, and especially looks to see if part of the heart is at risk for another heart attack. With a stress echocardiogram, the heart is “stressed” by exercise or by medication to speed it up, and the movement of the heart is carefully examined by sound waves. This test can help determine whether you really did have a heart attack and whether you need treatment to help prevent another one. Many people who have had a heart attack never knew it. Either they had no symptoms, or they thought it was something else, such as stomach upset (heart attacks in the inferior part of the heart often feel like stomach problems). But if you have had a heart attack, then certain medicines, such as aspirin, beta blockers and statin drugs, are very helpful in preventing another. If the stress echo is worrisome, the cardiologist may recommend an angiogram, which is the best test we have at identifying parts of the heart at risk for heart attack. It also allows the doctors sometimes to open up blockages in the arteries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness. Page 19

The Livingston County Planning Department in partnership with Cattaraugus Community Action, Inc. (CCA) is writing a grant application for a HUD CDBG Manufactured Home Replacement Program. If funded, the program would facilitate the removal and replacement of dilapidated or hazardous mobile homes in Livingston County with new Energy Star rated homes, at no expense to the homeowner. Only dilapidated mobile homes meeting CDBG property condition standards are eligible to be replaced. Mobile homes must also be owner-occupied, with the owner being of low- to moderate-income and owning the home and the land where the home is sited. As part of the development of an application for funding, the County and CCA are working to establish a wait list of potentially eligible and interested program recipients. If the application is funded, the County and CCA will replace up to 4 qualifying homes. Inclusion on the property wait list does not guarantee final program selection. If interested in having your property added to the wait list or to learn more about the program, please contact Joe Gunther, Community Development Specialist, at (585) 243-7550 or JGunther@co.livingston.ny.us. For adequate time to complete the funding application, all interested are asked to respond to this ad by August 5, 2022

HOW TO STAY MENTALLY SHARP AFTER RETIREMENT Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses it appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains.

Keeping Our Promise: More than a Mission Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK

K

eeping Our Promise (KOP), the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today, is a Rochester-based program which assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith and KOP Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero continue the struggle to not only bring these individuals and families to safety, but also to help them resettle with a solid foundation on which to successfully rebuild their lives. After all the families have endured, it cannot be easy. The work they did, even being associated with the United States or the former Afghan government, put them in danger. When American troops were withdrawn, the more progressive government fell. “The pace at which everything happened was very quick,” said Laurel. “The families didn’t have time to adjust or make other arrangements.” Ellen agreed. “All the sudden, the president left,” she explained. “Those associated with his government knew they had to try to get out.” Muzafar* worked with the Afghan Supreme Court, creating a docket system and working for women’s and children’s legal rights in Afghanistan. For this, of course, he would be targeted by the Taliban. His wife was educated, as well. She went to dental school in Turkey and came back as a dentist. If they had stayed, he probably would have lost his life, both because of his job with the Afghan government and because he was fighting the very things the Taliban supported. KOP helped bring Muzafar and his wife to safety in the United States. KOP first connected with Vares* in 2019. On the day Kabul fell, Vares was still at work. “He messaged me and said, ‘I am being left behind,’” said Ellen. “I told him, ‘I need all of your American contacts immediately.’ I called this retired army colonel, and I said, ‘You don’t know me, and this might sound crazy, but I need a letter of recommendation to get this man out of the country.’” Vares had worked with the United States, then for Mercy Corps before going to work for the Afghan government. He had 17 ex-military people supporting him, and it was clear how much his service meant to them. Thanks to KOP, Vares and his family have been welcomed to safety. Dalir* was a TV anchor. When KOP brought him safely to the United States, his goal was to continue to work in media. He took a job indirectly related to media at first and continued to work towards his dream. “He was very focused; one of the most persistent people I’ve met in a lot of ways, and he just really made it happen,” said Laurel. Now, Dalir is working for a local TV station. “His coworkers seem to love him, and he is very passionate about his work,” she continued. “It is amazing to see someone’s dream come true, to see how the supports we provide set them up to achieve.” Unfortunately, there are still thousands of individuals and families waiting to leave Afghanistan. Tareq* worked for an army captain who was from south of Rochester. Tareq was a journalist and was present during an airport bombing. The army captain called Ellen. “I had to get clothing descriptions for everyone in his family because I had to describe everything to identify them,” she recalled. “I even had them wave a brightly colored piece of

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

clothing.” Unfortunately, Tareq’s passport was expired, and his father and youngest child did not have a passport. Now, finally, Tareq’s family all have their passports so they can travel to Qatar. They are still waiting in Afghanistan. “Our Afghan families are stuck,” said Ellen. One Afghan gentleman told KOP, “It is really bad, worse than you can imagine. My family is fine, but the Taliban is now ordering young women to marry their fighters.” “I found the news article,” confirmed Ellen. “What do you say to that?” KOP plans to continue its efforts. “We rely on private donors to do what we are doing,” said Ellen. “The goal is to give these people a foundation through caring circles, a phone, a computer, eventually Wheels to Work. The issues are complicated. We can’t turn back time, but we can help these families.” “Our next steps will continue to be helping these people to come to this resettlement project in Rochester, creating continued support through community and policy, and to continue to bring the Afghans into our volunteering process,” added Laurel.

“They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives.”

There are many ways to support KOP, from helping with donation pickups to fixing furniture to participating in Caring Circles to donating funds or necessary home furnishings. KOP also encourages readers to call their Congress members, asking them to support the Afghan Adjustment Act which would allow certain Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the U.S. Supporting these evacuees is the least we can do. “They are good people,” said Ellen. “They are coming in with skill sets and ready to work. They are running the clock all the way around, trying to rebuild their lives and take care of their families.” “They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives,” said Laurel, noting that U. S. military members are KOP’s biggest allies. “These people kept the United States safe, informed, and engaged. There is nothing more patriotic than helping them.” *Names have been changed for privacy.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

How to Get a Pet Cleanup Station in Your Neighborhood DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The sidewalks of my small town are often littered with dog waste. There is a town ordinance requiring owners to pick up after their dogs, but it’s clearly not being enforced. I read that installing pet waste stations throughout the community can greatly reduce this problem. How do I convince the town to do this? -- Gloria G. in Ohio DEAR GLORIA: Dog waste stations, which provide small plastic or compostable waste pickup bags and a covered can to dispose of poo, can not only improve the sidewalks in your town, it can improve water quality in local streams and lakes. Runoff from piles of dog poop add nitrogen and phosphorus to nearby water systems, depleting oxygen and endangering aquatic life. You can help fix this by calling attention to the problem and getting community support for pet pickup stations.

1. Contact your local municipality. Find out how to put forward a pet waste proposal. Sometimes one is on the table already; learn how you can join an ongoing effort to get approval for pet waste stations. 2. Install a pet pickup bag dispenser. If local ordinances allow it, set up a waste bag dispenser at the edge of your yard or driveway. 3. Enlist others in the cause. The best allies in this initiative are other responsible dog owners who you meet walking their dogs. Start a conversation, then a Facebook group, then an in-person meeting. The more stakeholders in the initiative, the faster it can happen. 4. Be prepared for pushback. You’ll have to answer questions like: How will the town pay for these stations? Who will maintain them? Are there other property or HOA issues to consider? It may take time, but with a little research and some positive conversations with neighbors, your town’s dog poo problem could soon be a thing of the past. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

In these cases, family members are often left with few resources and no sense of where to begin their quest to find their missing loved ones. Fortunately, there is a worldwide organization that works to reconnect families who have been separated by international crises. The American Red Cross—part of the world’s largest humanitarian network— offers free and confidential services, striving to reconnect loved ones when: • Families are separated as a result of international conflict, disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. • Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. • The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred. Across international boundaries, the organization offers a beacon of hope for families to be reunited. And though the process can take time, Red Cross volunteers do everything in their power—from phone calls and online searches, to in-person interviews and worldwide travel—to fulfill families’ hopes. “These people have broken hearts,” said Fidele, a Red Cross volunteer from Burundi who was previously reunited with his father after a 20year search. “We ask questions about what their loved one looks like or where they last lived to help us with our search. These questions bring them back to the time they were forced to separate from their families.” Little Words, Big Impact The organization also makes it possible for displaced individuals to reach out to their families—even half a world away. The family messages transmitted by the American Red Cross can be very brief, but the three short words—“I am alive”—may be all that is needed to ease the minds of distraught loved ones. To begin a search, contact your local Red Cross chapter—the critical link in your community to the global Red Cross Red Crescent network. You can also call the free national helpline at (844) 782-9441. From Latin America and Africa to Asia and Europe, the American Red Cross helps people in some of the world’s most at-risk communities. This work is powered by the generosity of volunteers and donors. To learn more visit redcross.org/international.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE

Call about consignments

Economics: The effects of climate change on crops and livestock may force farmers to change the nature of their farms. The UCS notes that farmers may be forced to choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are suited to the new conditions sparked by climate change. Going in a new direction could force farmers to make potentially costly investments in machinery and other changes as they make the transition.

www.AuctionZip.com OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

ATTENTION VILLAGE OF GENESEO RESIDENTS The Village of Geneseo Water Department will begin flushing hydrants on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at 4AM. The flushing will continue through Friday, August 5, 2022 between 4AM – 4PM. The work involves little or no interruption of service, although a slight discoloration of the water and drop in water pressure may occur in areas where flushing is underway.

Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc.gov/ lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-234-9473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE use appropriate Always language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I finally got a new car, and there’s no cassette player in it. I have a pretty large library of music on tapes, so I was a little bummed. My wife got me a little device that looks like an old Walkman, and it hooks up to the computer. I can convert my cassettes to digital songs, which I can burn onto CDs. It would cost hundreds of dollars to re-buy all that music, and there are some tapes that I couldn’t replace even if I had the money, so this is great.” -- C.C. in Ohio * “I love old books, and there are always a few I am looking for that are out of print. It seems like when I get inside a used-book store, I forget everything. So I made a card that I keep in my wallet and on it I list all the authors or titles I am after. This way, I have it handy all the time.” -- C.D. in Florida * Apricots are a relative of the peach, and they can be ripened just like a peach can -- in a paper bag on the counter. They should be refrigerated when ripe. * “I went to a tag sale and purchased a set of really cute flowerpots for barely anything. I like them so much that I am using them inside my house. They are holding utensils in the kitchen, and remotes and other odds and ends in the living room. They are great!” -- S.I. in Texas * Laundry baskets can be your best friends when decluttering the house. Go from room to room collecting the clutter in a laundry basket, then bring it to a central location to sort and redistribute items that belong in each room. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Signs Wouldn’t it be nice/safe/perhaps lifesaving, if all 2-way intersections (like the one pictured) had this signage below the stop sign? “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” would be so helpful for so many 2-way intersections everywhere, and sadly, lives have been lost because a driver unfortunately deemed it a 4-way stop, and proceeds into oncoming traffic. May not be the complete answer, but a very valid attempt at one. Let’s see more of these signs!

S E V RA Many Thanks! Many thanks to Eileen & Morgan of Livonia Public Library - for helping me with Zoom for the Livonia Graduation Ceremony on June 26, 2022. - Grateful, MJB Ukraine A heartfelt Thank You to our community who assisted the Community Clothes Closet along with the VUMC to raise monies by purchasing dinners June 25th to aid the beleaguered Ukrainian citizens. I’m sure they will be grateful more than we could ever know. A total of $1,400 will be arriving there for emergent use. We pray that God guides and blesses the use of the monies as we continue remembering them in prayer.

Dangerous Driver To the older lady driving the blue Mercedes SUV on 6/28. Turning left at the intersection between [local business] and [local business], you did not have the right of way! You completely cut me off. I had to come to a complete stop to avoid hitting you. But trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, it looked like you didn't even see me (scary). You then proceeded to not even go the speed limit. I was then starting to get more irritated with you, so I turned on my headlights, hoping then you would see me. You then turned in to [local business]. The icing on the cake: you attempted to flip me off, but your arthritic hand looked more like an eagle's claws. So, I blew my horn as to draw attention to you with the other patrons, not that you'd actually tell them the truth. My hope is that someone in your family will see this and maybe re-evaluate your driving ability. I was able to stop in time, saving my son and myself. The next person may not be able to. Stop being so selfish and arrogant.

Interesting As a grocery store employee, I find it ironic that customers will come into the store and be outright abusive over rising prices, but will not bat an eye over spending money on enough fireworks to last three consecutive nights. Move your car! Be a good neighbor and stop parking directly across the street from the end of my driveway so that I don’t have to struggle to get out. We already live on a narrow street. Have some consideration.

DID YOU KNOW?

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. 4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

Convenient Location! Walk to stores, library, etc.

Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.

LAKE GLEN APARTMENTS

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either. 3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change. 4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories. REAL ESTATE

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY

FOR RENT We Have a Beautiful Apartment Just for You! Woodside Apartments 1 Bedroom Apartments for Seniors & Disabled 9 Fourth Street, Nunda, NY • 585-468-5310

The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.

To share a memory or send a condolence visit oconnelldoughertyfuneralhome.com Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

“People seem to me to be happiest when they are working for nothing and can afford to do so…” ~ Robert S. Lynd

As an American sociologist of considerable note, Lynd spoke with the authority of experience. He observed that when people are engaged in volunteer work, they are usually doing what they enjoy best. Most people work for nothing because they truly enjoy the work for which they volunteer. Although this may seem to apply mainly to retired persons, most of us could afford to volunteer a few hours to projects where our help is greatly needed. Our reward would be rich…Happiness! The rewards of pre-planning one’s own funeral service are peace of mind and the satisfaction of knowing your desires will be carried out. Let us provide further details to answer your questions, without obligation.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER Avoid idling. Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetors could not get the appropriate mix of air and fuel in the engine. But carburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy note that modern engines will warm up by being driven and urge drivers to avoid warming up their cars for more than 30 seconds.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Sponsor a local youth sports team: Youth sports team sponsorships are a relatively inexpensive way to create brand awareness. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, Inc., reports that sponsorship costs vary from organization to organization, though they may cost as little as $100 to around $5,000 for the season. In return for that investment, businesses gain exposure to athletes, athletes’ families and friends, volunteers, and countless others who may see players in uniform on game day. When compared to the cost of advertising online, on television or on the radio, youth sports sponsorship provides a great return on investment.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

York Central School has the following anticipated openings

Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.
