HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

essential tremor. I have tried many medicines. Currently, I’m taking propranolol and primidone, but nothing seems to help. The only thing that stops the shaking is a glass of wine. I have inquired about a laser procedure, but I found out that it’s risky. An MRI was normal. I am 82 and in excellent health. I would like to know if there is anything new to help me. -- J.M. ANSWER: A lot of people have essential tremor -- 5 percent of people worldwide. It causes a noticeable tremor, usually of the hands and arms, but also may affect the head or other body parts. The severity is variable. Some people will be annoyed by symptoms, while others have real difficulty eating or writing. An expert sometimes is needed to confirm the diagnosis, as it can appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions. However, improvement with alcohol is suggestive of essential tremor. Unfortunately, alcohol is not a good long-term treatment, as people build tolerance. Propranolol is a beta blocker, and primidone is an anti-epilepsy drug. They are the most common pharmacologic treatments for essential tremor. You probably have tried gabapentin and topiramate, two other anti-epilepsy drugs that work for some people but may have significant side effects. My first patient to go through ultrasound treatment for essential tremor did so a few months ago. This uses many focused ultrasound beams to heat an area of the brain called the thalamus, destroying the cells responsible for the tremor. This procedure is effective for most people, but it can have side effects, including weakness, gait disturbance and numbness. It is not clear how long the relief will last. It is an option for people whose symptoms are significantly interfering with their quality of life and who have not gotten good relief from medications. Medicare is starting to approve payment for the procedure, but it is not yet covered by most insurances. You can read more about ultrasound treatment for essential tremor at http://bit.ly/2FPFlf9.
DEAR DR. ROACH: On three separate occasions, I experienced a very audible high-pitched sound in my left ear, and immediately, without other warning, fell to the floor. One time I injured myself enough to require treatment from the emergency room. These happen without warning. Do you have any insight on the sounds and the falls that follow? -- R.C. ANSWER: Two concerns come immediately to mind; one is serious, the other not. The first is a simple faint, also called “vasovagal syncope.” Occasionally a faint is preceded by a loud rushing sound, although it usually is experienced in both ears. It’s a warning sign to sit down immediately -- that often can prevent the faint from happening. However, nearly everybody with a faint has some lightheadedness, so I am not 100 percent sure of this possibility. The second possibility is both rarer and more concerning. The blood vessels in the back of the skull can be compressed or made abnormal due to tumors, abnormalities in the bone and aneurisms. Some of these can be associated with sudden loss of consciousness, often with no warning. This deserves an immediate evaluation from your regular doctor or a neurologist, perhaps even an MRI scan. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. Keeping vehicles looking pristine requires care and diligent cleaning. So many day-to-day activities and environmental materials have the potential to damage the finish on cars and trucks. While winter weather and chemicals used to keep roadways passable are often blamed for affecting the appearance of cars and trucks, winter is not the only time of year when substances can cause damage to vehicles. Spring and summer are prime seasons for sap, birds and insects. These times of year tend to see an uptick in road work as well, and such projects can contribute to damage caused by loose asphalt, gravel and tar. Addressing problems resulting from tree sap, insect and bird droppings and tar may not be something to look forward to, but it is necessary to keep cars looking pristine.

Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

This is a public service message, too. If you are, or know of, an elderly person or a disabled person who has to cross the road to get to their mail box, you can get the mailboxes moved so the resident won’t have to cross as long as the mail delivery vehicle can turn around in your driveway Even if I were to entertain your notion that there’s such a thing as climate change and that it’s human caused, the explicit irony in your post as it pertains to “children” and the future is what has me shaking my head. Literally every single one of this nation’s problems can be trickled down to overpopulation. Animals are being plumped up and slaughtered younger because supply has to meet demand. Less trees for oxygen, more Section 8 housing, more kids, more drivers, more pollution, more people, more garbage at overflowing landfills. Once we began to understand that the Earth has finite resources, we can actually begin to acknowledge the real problem. as to not back out on the street. You need to contact the residents’ personal care provider to get a note stating the reason why it is dangerous for the elderly or disabled person to cross the road. Take that to your local post office, and they will assess your driveway, then move the mailbox to the same side of the road so the elderly or disabled person won’t have to cross the road any longer. It is legal, but many people don’t know about it.
Thank you, Five Star Bank in Brockport. Everyone is always so nice when you go into the before going on to claim fictitious explanations for the Civil War: It is a shame that after more than 150 years, many people are still philosophically fighting the Civil War. Much of this extends to current politics and justification for unpopular beliefs. The writer of the post claimed that Northerners stole and “took over (Southern) farms by any means necessary, even murder.” Such expression of madeup history is a sad factor of today’s modern internet society where people can post outrageous lies without any accountability. The poster then went on to use this ill-informed claim as the justification for flying the Confederate Flag.
branch. I have only gone in perhaps three times, but when I did, they were cheerful, and a teller one time went above and beyond the call of duty to assist me. Kudos to the residents and staff members of the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, Clark Meadows, Ferris Hills at West Lake and all of Canandaigua. On “The Longest Day,” a June 21st Alzheimer’s Association event to raise awareness out of session, there is a playground there. There is no need to do 50 miles an hour on these streets. Police are rarely there to see this happen. Some kind of blinking light should be installed so people know to slow down!
Every summer, there are some people who have these every weekend. It’s like a business. I wonder why these townships don’t do anything about this. It is a distraction, annoying to go around parked cars, etc. Once in a while is all right, but there are even people continually putting different cars out for sale almost every weekend. good thing. Take it to flea markets. I am going to have a yard sale, but if it will be like the last one I had years ago, I’d almost rather not. Three women came and murmured and complained about prices, though I paid a lot more for the new and nearly new things I put out. I mostly sold for half what I paid or even less. You are on my turf, my land. One lady even spun gravel in my driveway because she was unhappy that I wouldn’t sell my car mats really cheaply. People were rude. I did not say anything back to them, but I was shaking. If you are at my place, treat me with respect. Next time, I will politely tell you to put the things down and exit.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model.
Ruth Marion Schuyler “Ruthie” July 20, 2019
3. Send a text to stay connected when far away.
Livonia: Ruth Marion Schuyler, age 11 months of Livonia, passed away peacefully at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Ruthie was born in Rochester on August 8, 2018 to Margaret and Ryan Schuyler. Survived by her older sister; Eleanor, her grandparents; Malcolm White of West Wareham, MA, Martha and Sewall Janeway of Brunswick, ME and Deborah and John Schuyler of Wayland, NY., her great grandparents, along with countless aunts, uncles, and cousins.
4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:
Ruth, affectionately known as Ruthie to friends and family, was a contented baby, always laughing, smiling, and bringing joy to those privileged to have known her. She was strong and determined when faced with adversity and will endure in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3
Friends and Family were welcomed to call on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 4 to 7 PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 5:00 PM at Central Presbyterian Church, 31 Center Street in Geneseo. Interment will take place privately. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Ruth’s memory to Golisano Children’s Hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital.
• 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5

Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8
The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment. Learn More: For helpful tips, tools, information, jokes and resources, visit www.fatherhood.gov. 1 - Primus, L. (2017). “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated.
A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores. Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress. Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On July 26, 1775, the U.S. postal system is established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Franklin set up more efficient colonial routes and standardized delivery costs based on distance and weight. On July 22, 1933, American Wiley Post returns to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, becoming the first aviator to fly solo around the world. Piloting a Lockheed Vega monoplane named the Winnie May, he circled the globe in 7 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes. On July 27, 1949, the world's first jet-propelled airliner, the British De Havilland Comet, makes its maiden testflight in England. The jet engine would revolutionize the airline industry, shrinking air travel time in half. On July 24, 1959, during the grand opening ceremony of the American National Exhibition in Moscow, Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev engage in a heated debate in a model kitchen set up for the fair. The "kitchen debate" became one of the most famous episodes of the Cold War.

How To Never Miss A Day Of Your Medication (NAPS)—Most people can’t go a day without a cup of coffee or checking their e-mail. But with the demands of everyday life it’s not surprising that about 50 percent of patients sometimes fail to take their daily medications as prescribed. According to a new survey by WebMD, over the past six months one-third of respondents either sometimes or most of the time missed taking their medication as prescribed even though 76 percent know it can cause their condition to worsen or symptoms to return. When asked why they’d missed a dose, 66 percent of survey respondents said that they forgot, 38 percent said they experienced side effects, and 26 percent weren’t able to get to the pharmacy to refill their prescription on time. “Not following a prescription correctly can seriously impact your health,” said Jamal Downer, a Walgreens pharmacist. “Your local pharmacist is an expert who can help you understand your medications and provide tips on how to use tools like smartphone apps that make it easier and more convenient to stay on track.” Steps to help you take your medications include services online, through apps and in store: • Getting help whenever you need it: A pharmacist is an integral part of your support team, and now they are available anytime via phone. Walgreens Pharmacy Chat service provides 24/7 access to pharmacists who can answer questions to help you better understand your medications, including side effects and how the other medicines you take and food you eat may interact with another drug. • Setting reminders: Whether you need a quick prompt to take your pill or a text alert that your refill is available, calendar notifications and free tools like a pill reminder can help ensure you always have your medication on hand. • Simplifying your refills: Pharmacists can also coordinate your prescription refills to a single pickup date with the Save a Trip Refills® program for free. Refilling your prescription can be made more convenient by switching to a 90-day supply or setting up automatic refills. • Making refills convenient: Just like you can order purchases online from your phone, you can have refills shipped directly to your home. With Walgreens Express™, patients can prepay and pick up prescriptions in a dedicated line or get their eligible medications delivered. From pill reminders to tools for conveniently managing your condition, the answer to improved health and saving money could be in the palm of your hand. Download the Walgreens app or ask your local pharmacist how they can help you stay on track with your medications. For further information, go to http://bit.ly/redphone-wakeup. Your pharmacist can help you make sure you take your medicine on time. Page 28

Local Doctor Makes Honor Flight Possible for WWII Veteran By Amanda Dudek
A
ttending an Honor Flight seemed like an impossible dream for former US Navy officer, William Lipson. The 94-year-old WWII Veteran and his 88-year-old wife had returned to family in New York. Dr. Vythi Alagappan of Hope Internal Medicine in Avon, mentioned Honor Flight to his new patient. Honor Flight Network (HFN), a volunteer-run non-profit which serves Veterans of the United States armed forces from WWI through the Vietnam War, is completely funded through donations. Located in 45 states, HFN flew 21,189 Veterans in 2018 and 222,133 since it began in 2005. Participating Veterans must be healthy enough to travel and have a “guardian” to accompany them. Unfortunately, due to family health challenges, Lipson looked to an unusual person for help: his doctor. “I said, ‘Why not?’” Dr. Alagappan recalled. “He was just 17-years-old during WWII,” said Dr. Alagappan. “He recalled being in the Samoan Islands or thereabouts and that he had worked in the Navy, but he didn’t have any paperwork or anything.” Thinking HFN would require records as evidence, Dr. Alagappan was hesitant to pursue the matter. “I finally wrote a letter to HFN explaining the situation and stating that I would be willing to be Lipson’s ‘guardian,’” he said “I sent the letter on Monday morning,” Dr. Alagappan said. “Tuesday afternoon, I received a phone call asking if Lipson and I were able to participate that weekend.” When he asked about verification, HFN’s Elaine Fahselt assured him that if a 94-year-old man says he is a WWII Veteran, they believe him; nobody lies about that. “That they don’t doubt the word of WWII Veterans is a wonderful thing,” he commented.
William Lipson (center front, tan jacket) participates in Honor Flight Mission 65 with fellow Veterans.
Lunch was provided thanks to Arby’s. “In the coaches, we also had candies, chips, water, Gatorade in all colors, whatever we wanted,” Dr. Alagappan said. “We finished by 6pm,” he said. “We traveled to a very nice room at a Hilton Hotel before attending cocktail hour.” There, Lipson struck up a conversation with a fellow WWII Navy Veteran, also named William, from a San Diego HFN group. The two 94-year-olds, both of whom had gone to Memphis, Tennessee for training, laughed and shared memories.
Arrangements were made for the following weekend. “WWII Veterans are a very shrinking population, so they have preference,” explained Dr. Alagappan.
At the wonderful dinner that followed, HFN thanked attending Veterans and made a special point to thank Dr. Alagappan. “They were hats off to me, and it was so humbling,” he said.
HFN Mission 65, Veterans flying courtesy of Southwest Airlines, contained the usual complement of about 60 Veterans (of which Lipson was eldest), 60 “guardians” and 20 volunteer staff. Volunteers are asked to donate, and many are willing and waiting to do so. “I didn’t want him to pay anything,” Dr. Alagappan said. “It was an honor for me.”
The following day, Veterans returned to a hero’s welcome and an address by a Deputy Monroe County Chief Executive. “From the volunteers and airports to Southwest Airlines, Dunkin’ Donuts, Arby’s... everyone does something and so quietly. I became an American Citizen two years ago, and this was such an honor for me,” Dr. Alagappan said.
Mission 65 was scheduled to board at 6:15am with Veterans arriving at 4am. Knowing Lipson needed transportation, Dr. Alagappan reached out to Sgt. Gary Cicoria with the Livingston County Sheriff ’s Department. Almost immediately, Sheriff Tom Dougherty generously offered to help. Chief Deputy Matthew Burgess contacted Lipson, and Deputy Michael Phillips volunteered to bring him to and from the airport.
“Veterans have the biggest honor,” he continued. “At a military funeral, there is a regular service, the bugle playing ‘Taps,’ the folding of the flag and giving it to the Veteran’s family. Even if I am willing to pay $100,000, I cannot receive that. It is a unique honor. Arlington Cemetery entombs about 317,000 Veterans. Even if I am willing to pay $100,000, I cannot get a - Dr. Alagappan plot there.”
On Saturday, May 4th, Lipson and Dr. Alagappan met at Greater Rochester International Airport. “Pictures were taken,” said Dr. Alagappan. “We had breakfast thanks to Dunkin Donuts. It is very well orchestrated down to the minute with military precision.”
Dr. Alagappan observed, “I worked in India for some years; there is a concept of collecting for servicemen and a little quarter here and there for kids getting into college, but there is not much offered. If you go to England, where I lived for 8 years, they do have more recognition for Veterans, but not like the United States where Veterans have hospitals, recognition and are honored in many ways.”
“Arriving in Baltimore, we received a surprise Veteran Willia Vete William Lips Lipson and nd welcome and took photos,” Dr. Vythi Alagappan Dr. Alagappan recalled. “There were three coaches waiting.” Over a dozen Patriot Guard riders escorted the coaches, parade style, to Washington D.C. “We visited seven memorials,” said Dr. Alagappan. “Including those for the Airforce, the Navy, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Iwo Jima and the Lincoln Memorial. We also visited the Naval Yard Museum. At the Arlington Cemetery ceremonies, all of the Honor Flight Veterans were given priority seating.” Later, they also had the opportunity to take photos with Senator Bob Dole.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Technology snafus tax your patience. But before you throw that computer or other hardware into the trash, take a deep breath and call someone knowledgeable for help. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Don’t be too upset if your generosity goes unappreciated. These things happen, and rather than brood over it, move on. A new friend could open up some exciting new possibilities. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A loved one helps you get through an especially difficult emotional situation. Spend the weekend immersed in the body and soul restorative powers of music and the other arts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You are pretty much in charge of what you want to do this week. However, it might be a good idea to keep an open mind regarding suggestions from people you know you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Another chance to shine (something always dear to the Lion’s heart) might be resented by others. But you earned it, so enjoy it. The weekend brings news about a family member. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A suggestion that never took off could become viable again. Dust it off, update it if necessary, and resubmit it. In your personal life, a new relationship takes an “interesting” turn. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confronting a new challenge to your stated position could work to your advantage by settling all doubts once you’re able to present a solid defense backed up by equally solid facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You enjoy doing nice things for others. But this is a good time to do something nice for yourself as well. You might want to start by planning a super-special getaway weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some changes you feel you need to make might be reasonable and appropriate. But others might lead to new problems. Think things through carefully before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good instincts usually keep the sure-footed Goat on the right path. So, what others might see as stubbornness on your part, in fact reflects your good sense of what is worth supporting. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A period of introspection could lead to some surprising conclusions -- and also equally surprising changes -- involving a number of your long-held positions on several issues. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The financially practical Pisces might want to take a sensible approach to spending as well as investing. Being prudent now pays off later. A romantic situation moves into another phase. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of curiosity keeps you continually alert for what’s new about people, places and things.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

TIPS TO MAKE AN OLDER HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Insulate basement headers. Uninsulated basement headers are common, especially in older homes. They can act as a gateway for heated air to escape. Fixing the problem is fast and easy. Simply cut stone wool insulation to fit the cavity and compress into place. Doing this throughout your basement will prevent heat loss and can potentially save hundreds of dollars each year.

Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

OTHER GRILLED CHICKEN & ONION SKEWERS
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Makes 10 to 12 skewers Basting Sauce (optional) 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup mirin 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs, excess fat removed and cut into bite-size pieces 1 yellow onion, cut into 2-inch wedges, and/or baby leeks, white part only, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 tablespoon canola or other neutral oil Salt (optional)
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high. If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl. Drain the skewers. Thread the chicken pieces alternately with the onion pieces onto the skewers, using about 3 pieces of chicken and 2 pieces of onion for each skewer. As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil. The grilling goes quickly, so set up your workstation next to the grill before you begin: the plate holding the skewers, the bowl of sauce and a basting brush and/ or the salt, and tongs for turning the skewers. If using the basting sauce, either dip each skewer in the sauce or brush the sauce on the skewers and then place directly over the heat. Grill the skewers, turning 3 or 4 times and basting with additional sauce, until the chicken is cooked through and the onions are scorched around the edges, about 5 minutes total. If the sauce appears to be burning at any point, move the skewers to a cooler part of the grill, or reduce the heat if using a gas grill. If using salt instead of the basting sauce, place the skewers directly over the heat and grill, turning 3 or 4 times, until cooked through, about 5 minutes total. Sprinkle both sides of each skewer with salt and remove from the grill.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.

If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
