now and past, our gratitude forever. Love and Prayers, Carol R. Rowley
In Honor of Rauber Family, owners of Agway - Wayland, NY The friendly Rauber family will no longer tend the store. Their welcome smiles and greetings, which would meet us at the door, the years of dedication, always ready to assist, built many deep relations and sincerely will be missed. We wish the very best for you, in all your new endeavors, and please remember,
Lifeguards at Deep Run Beach Thank you to the Deep Run Beach lifeguards who safeguarded my Border Collie who had run across Rt. 364 to the beach to take a swim in the lake. They secured her with a rope; they had and tried to find her owner in a nearby neighborhood with no success. Without knowing if anyone would show up, they held on to her, saving her from traffic, until I showed up in my car to bring her back to our home on the other side of Rt. 364. Thank you so much for preventing her from getting hit by a car. You went above and beyond, and I am so very grateful! We are reinstalling our electric fence to keep her in the yard.
Dipper Dan loves libraries! The Lima Public Library wants to give a special thank you to Dipper Dan in Honeoye Falls for donating 25 single scoop cone coupons. We are so grateful for their generosity and their support for literacy. The coupons are part of our prize package. If you registered for our program and completed your game board, stop in and pick up your gift bag! Thankful family The Mairs Family would like to thank the staff of the Livingston County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and compassion shown to our Pete during his recent stay. Words cannot express how grateful we are. Also, we appreciate all of the kind words and acts of love from our family, friends, and community. We will miss him.
S T N RA Social Security not doubled Self employed people don’t pay double. They are confusing themselves with their company. They are two different entities. The company pays half, and they pay half. Their company gets all the legal deductions a company gets, and they get a paycheck. They get all the extra perks that come with owning a company: a company car / truck, business trips, etc. If they don’t want to pay, don’t take a paycheck. Simple solution.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES Arguably one of the most challenging - and often frustrating - components about puppyhood is training the dog to use the outdoors for bathroom needs. It’s easy to underestimate the time involved in housebreaking a puppy. The Humane Society of America says puppies typically can control their bladders for one hour for every month of age. That means if the dog is three months old, he can hold it for about three hours.

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

585.944.4347 HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

Use a white noise machine. Noise is a potential contributor to poor sleep. The NSF notes that some people may have their sleep interrupted by noise even if they don’t know it. White noise machines are often used to help infants sleep, but such machines can be just as effective at helping adults. The NSF notes that the constant ambient sound created by white noise machines masks activity both inside and outside the house, helping men and women enjoy more restful sleep.

MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

Energy bills tend to be high in summertime, when many people crank up their air conditioners in an attempt to combat the heat. For some households, higher energy bills might be stretching their budgets, while others might be looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Conserving energy can help homeowners save money and help the planet at the same time. And reducing energy consumption in the summer does not require men and women to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. In fact, various strategies can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their summertime energy consumption.

USE LESS ENERGY WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS Invest in ceiling fans, which can move air through the home. This will help prevent pockets of hot air in certain spaces. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even in homes with air conditioning, ceiling fans enable homeowners to raise the thermostats on their AC units by about 4 F with no reduction in comfort. Attic fans can draw heat out of a home through vents, also helping to reduce indoor air temperatures. These devices can reduce reliance on air conditioners, especially on moderate days or cool nights.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP LED road flares: Traditional road flares tend to burn out rather quickly, with some lasting as little as 15 minutes. That can be a problem for travelers who experience car trouble and end up stranded far away from auto body shops. Some flameless LED road flares can last for hours on end off of a single charge, providing drivers with some peace of mind should they be stranded and forced to wait awhile before a tow truck or mechanic arrives.

Kevetta Farms Named Livingston County Farm
of the Year
Farm to be honored and agriculture industry celebrated August 15th at the Farmer Neighbor Event BY THE LIVINGSTON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
T
ucked back in the hills of Sparta, Kevin and Annetta Herrington, along with their children Jessica and Tyler, farm a 50-cow dairy operation, milking both Holsteins and Jersey cows. They also sell both high protein and butterfat milk, and breed and sell calves with superior genetics throughout the northeast. The Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce and Livingston County Farm Bureau are pleased to announce that Kevetta Farms has been named the Livingston County Farm of the Year. The farm will be recognized and the agriculture industry celebrated at the annual Farmer Neighbor Event scheduled for Sunday, August 15th and being held at Deer Run Winery. Kevetta Farm was selected in large part due to the unique nature of this small rotational grazing super herd operation. Many of the strategic and calculated operational decisions have helped to advance the Herrington’s herd and led to it being recognized as a Super Milk producer for 15 years running. The farm that Kevetta Farms sits on today was purchased by Annetta’s grandfather back in the 1950s. It acted primarily as the heifer raising facilities for her family’s Holstein dairy farm located three miles down the road. Kevetta Farms was established in April 1988 when Kevin and Annetta were married, primarily consisting of Holsteins. They had returned to Annetta’s home farm and were working towards a partnership with Annetta’s parents. But unfortunately, a small 60-cow dairy could not sustain four families, so shortly after Jessica was born, their small herd was dispersed in 1991. Someday, they had hoped to return to the farm when Annetta’s father was ready to retire.
When they first started milking, they had about 17 cows in the string, including Holsteins, Ayrshires, Jerseys and even a couple of AngusHolstein crosses. Today, they’re milking about 50 individuals, giving Kevetta Farms the time with the population being close to 2/3 Jersey and 1/3 Holstein. The farm is an intensive grazing operation with the intent of the overall operation being very efficient. Their ration is supplemented with free-choice bailage and they purchase TMR during the winter months, fed at 50% and top dressed grain according to milk production. Milking occurs in a flat-barn parlor and cows are housed in a compost pack barn which was constructed in 2011. Over the years, Kevetta Farms has made a name for itself and has received many awards and accolades, from being a 15-year Super Milk producer, to the Jerseys being ranked nationally for their milk and protein production and their Holsteins being ranked in the top 200 BAA (breed age average) in the United States, along with being a recipient of the Holstein Associations Progressive Breeder Award.
When their daughter, Jessica, was very young, she loved to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm to help feed the calves. They gave Jessica her first calf when she was five years old and she started showing at the fair. The kids enjoyed going to the fairs and taking care of their calves during the summer. Annetta’s father sold his dairy herd on December 31, 1999. After that, Kevin and Annetta took over the old heifer facilities with the intention to purchase the 110-acre farm to raise dairy animals for their children, Jessica and Tyler, to show throughout their time as youth, as well as raise beef. At that time, they did not intend on getting back into milking cows.
Sunday, August 15, 2021 • 5:00pm-9:00pm Deer Run Winery- 3772 West Lake Road, Geneseo Tickets are $30pp
On January 1, 2000, Annetta’s father passed away from pancreatic cancer, and once the estate was settled, they officially purchased the farm. Since the kids no longer had someone to supply them with calves, Kevin and Annetta encouraged them to apply for scholarships and other grants to use to purchase calves. The first Jersey came to Kevetta Farms in 2001 after Jessica won the Herbert Wheeler Scholarship put on by the Niagara Frontier Jersey Club.

Not too long after, longtime friend, Bob Hill, asked if they would raise his three Jersey heifers for him. They agreed and those individuals eventually became the foundation for the Kevetta Jersey herd. The pair started milking cows when Jessica’s first Jersey calved in. Then they milked Bob’s Jersey heifers, feeding the milk to calves. With the kids and Bob’s heifers calving in, everything fell into place and they made the decision to get back into the dairy business and officially started shipping milk in 2005.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Exercise Can Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s Can we do this? Exercise twice a week for 10 minutes each time to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Of course we can. Researchers examined the records and followed the progress of 250,000 patients who had mild cognitive impairment. They concluded that moderate physical activity more than once a week reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 18%. We need to do more for our brain health than work the daily crossword puzzle or brush up on our chess skills. Physical exercise protects the brain, too, per the study. The key is that it should be moderate to vigorous exercise. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, examples of moderate exercise include walking 3-4 mph (a brisk walk while you’re still able to hold a conversation), vacuuming and washing windows, mowing the lawn and doubles tennis. Other sources are more specific: water aerobics for 30 minutes and raking leaves for 30 minutes. For comparison, examples of light exercise include washing dishes and using a computer. Vigorous exercises are things like shoveling, singles tennis and playing basketball or soccer. Having said that, there are more parts of our bodies that need exercise than just our brains. That’s where more time in an activity comes into play. Instead of a mere 10 minutes per day, we’re told to shoot for 150 minutes of exercise per week, or 30 minutes onr five days. One place to start developing an exercise plan is Mayoclinic.org. Type “moderate exercise” in the search box and scroll down the results until you find something interesting. Among the 600 choices are frequency of workout, using weighted hula hoops, Zumba, secrets to a healthy heart and so much more. The earlier in life we start exercising for our brains and bodies, the longer we’ll stay healthy as we age. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.
Look No Further For Reliable Appliance Service!
Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.

ORANGE GALETTE WITH BEET GORGONZOLA SALAD
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Recipe courtesy of Momma Cuisine
* Stuck zippers can be loosened with graphite powder, or simply by tracing a pencil lead over the zipper. * “The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It’s magical. This, coming from a softball mom whose daughter loves to slide.” -- A.A. in Florida * Clear bins make it easy to group like items in your pantry. You can remove the bin, get what you need and replace it, rather than digging through cans and boxes on a shelf and having to straighten it back up when you’re done. * A better use for soda: Use it to scrub your pots and pans. If you have grime and slime, try letting the acids in soda pop work it out for you. Pour enough soda to cover the bottom of the pots or pans and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Then scrub away. * “If you have a retractable cord on your vacuum, try this trick. Clip a clothespin at the optimum length, and the cord will not retract past that point. So, no more snapping right out of the outlet, which used to happen to me.” -- P.L. in Tennessee * Use rubbing alcohol to clean window frames. It evaporates quickly with no residue left behind. Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 15-20 minutes Servings: 12 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s 1 Sliced Pickled Beets nonstick cooking spray 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, approx. 16-by-11 inches 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 4 navel oranges, segmented 4 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola or other blue cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (opt’l) 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 2 cups mixed baby salad greens 1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted if desired Heat oven to 400 F. Drain beets well; set aside on paper towels to absorb remaining liquid. Discard liquid or save for another use. Spray large sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place puff pastry sheet on pan. With pastry brush, gently spread 1/2 tablespoon olive oil on pastry sheet. Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides.
REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have. The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications. “AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack. “If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.
Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. Sprinkle 2 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola over oranges. Sprinkle with salt, if desired, and basil.

Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on wire rack. Coarsely chop beets. In large bowl, toss together remaining orange segments, salad greens and chopped beets. Drizzle with remaining olive oil; toss gently to combine. Cut cooked galette into 12 pieces. Top with beet salad. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and pecans.

Puzzle Answers This Week MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath. HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS
Summer fun that is close to home Summer concert series: Summer concerts series typically begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town square to larger events at beaches and boardwalks that draw thousands of visitors.
Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Heatstroke Almost Killed Her Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I never keep my dog “Alfie” in the car, even on cool days. Last Sunday, I took Alfie to the park to get some exercise. It was hot, and after a short while Alfie came back to me, panting heavily. He was still panting on the drive home and seemed lethargic, so I called his veterinarian, who said to take him to the emergency vet immediately. There, he was diagnosed with heatstroke! They treated him and he’s doing much better, but I was shocked at how quickly Alfie developed a heat injury from being outside. Please warn your readers that dogs are very vulnerable to summer heat. -Chris in Portland, Oregon DEAR CHRIS: You are so right! I’m glad Alfie is doing well and that tragedy was averted by your instinct to contact the vet. Just like humans, dogs need to acclimate to their environment. Sudden weather extremes like excessive heat or freezing cold are very difficult to adjust to. Dogs have far fewer sweat glands than humans; they manage their body temperature in other ways, such as panting when it’s hot. So if we’re feeling the heat, dogs are feeling it even more! It’s important to watch for signs of heat injury, especially when outdoors. Excessive panting is a key sign, as is lethargy and excessive drooling. Other symptoms include reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination and collapse. Immediate treatment is needed to prevent serious injury or death. Keep plenty of cool water on hand for your dog to drink, both indoors and out. Never leave them in the car, even for a minute. At home, keep the air moving with fans, and cool down the environment with an air conditioner. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

Can Lyme Disease Lead to Parkinson’s
Serving Our Community! Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
Henrietta
---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can Lyme disease send a person into Parkinson’s disease? I tested positive for Lyme -- I had the bulls-eye rash, fever and terrible headaches. After a month on doxycycline, my left arm started shaking and my neurologist diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. The doctor said it had nothing to do with the Lyme disease. What is your opinion? -- S.M. ANSWER: I can absolutely understand why you might suspect that the neurologist could be wrong. The coincidence seems too much to believe. However, I think your neurologist is probably correct. The different types of neurological complications of Lyme disease are many and varied. The most common are any combination of meningitis symptoms (inflammation of the lining of the brain, with headache, fever, stiff neck and light sensitivity); disorders of the cranial nerves (especially the facial nerve, so people with neurological Lyme disease can look like they have Bell’s palsy); and damage to peripheral nerves, causing pain and weakness or numbness, often resembling sciatica (but may include other parts of the body). A detailed neurological exam by a neurologist would look for signs of Parkinson’s disease -- not just the tremor you describe, but also muscle rigidity and changes in gait. These would be very unusual in Lyme disease. I did find cases resembling some aspects of Parkinson’s disease, but they improved with treatment. It is possible that the stress of the Lyme disease hastened the onset of Parkinson’s disease you were destined to get. I say your neurologist is “probably correct” because what I found -- absence of data to support a correlation -- does not mean that there is no correlation, and it is possible that time may prove Lyme disease is connected to Parkinson’s. However, I think it’s unlikely.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.
