The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

Member United Motor Coach Association DID YOU KNOW? The pinnacle of birthday celebrations, if there’s no piñata to break open, is when the birthday cake comes out and party attendees serenade the guest of honor. The song everyone harmonizes to is among the most widely recognized and well-loved tunes in the world. The “birthday song,” also known as “Happy Birthday to You,” is in the public domain in the United States and the European Union. The song originally was penned as a classroom greeting song titled “Good Morning to All,” written by sisters Mildred J. Hill and Patty Smith Hill. Both were educators and developed unique teaching strategies to assist students. The song was composed by Mildred and the lyrics were written by Patty to be used in kindergarten classrooms. It is unclear who changed the lyrics and turned the song into a birthday ditty, as none of the earliest references to the song included credits or copyright notices.
Two tales circulate regarding the eventual copyright of the song. One has The Summy Company registering a copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R. R. Forman. The other says Jessica Hill, sister to Mildred and Patty, who was working with publisher Clayton F. Summy Company, copyrighted and published “Happy Birthday toYou” in 1935.Eventually Warner Chappell bought the company that was originally The Summy Company, and argued the birthday song was under copyright until 2030, making performances of the song illegal without paying royalties. However, a federal judge ruled in 2015 that Warner Chappell’s claim to a copyright on the song was not valid. The judge ruled its registration only covered a specific piano version, not the melody and lyrics. Therefore, “Happy Birthday to You” can be sung both privately and publicly without being subject to royalties or other restrictions.

Congratulations, Avon Corn Fest! Thank you to the Avon Rotary Club and all those who worked so hard to make this year’s Corn Festival one of the best yet! After a two year hiatus due to Covid, it was wonderful to come together as a community again and enjoy the music, the food, and the great entertainment! Nicely Done! A shout out to the Avon Class of 1972 for hosting a wonderful Reunion Banquet dinner this past Friday! All classes are welcome to join again next year as the class of 1973 will host. Thank you, local drive-in! My family and I visited a local drive-in movie theatre over the weekend and were very favorably No Good Deed On August 11th, I was heading to work when a small black and white dog ran in front of my vehicle. I caught it and called my daughter to come get it and start going door-to-door. She proceeded to do so and was advised to go to the post office and leave a flyer. While there, she asked a guy if he recognized the dog. He didn’t, but said he would house the dog and put up a flyer as we had a big dog at home and didn’t know how he will welcome a small dog. I also posted it on our town's Facebook page. Later, the owner found out who we were, came to our home, and confronted my daughter. Instead of being grateful, our neighbor was angry that we didn’t have the dog and proceeded to call the cops on us. They didn't need to be involved, and it wasted their time. A police officer showed up, took our account, and advised us to try to contact the guy. Come to find out, this isn’t the first dog I’ve rescued of hers. How about be grateful that someone decided to stop and help rather than drive off? No Support Can you please tell me why it is so difficult to obtain papers for a support dog? My friend, age 62, who is on disability for arthritis of the spine and PTSD, was once a surgeon's assistant. She had two boys who became Green Berets and fought eight years in Iraq. They're in Texas and California now. She has two grandchildren she has never met. Her family (two 82-year-old parents) will not help her. She's on apartment waiting lists. None accept a small Yorkie Terrier. That's her family now, a small dog which most apartments will not accept unless the person has support dog papers. When she asked the doctor for help, the doctor made her undergo the doctor's idea of therapy - psychiatric medicine and a 20-year-old therapist. No papers were ever provided.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Our tire techs ill assist you! Gift Certificates Available! Drive Safely~ Maintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Tire alignment is a way to reduce wear on tires and help avoid steering and “pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. When tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread wear. Misaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers who notice their steering wheel is off-center or vibrating when they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inward or outward angle of the tire when viewed from the front of the vehicle, will be adjusted. In addition, “toe,” or the extent to which the tires turn inward or outward when viewed from above, will be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis when viewed from the side of your vehicle. When tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles will offer a smooth ride with little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan. Guaranteed Used Auto & Truck Parts Fugle’s, Inc. Since 1958 We buy junk & salvage vehicles 5278 Route 15, S. Growing vegetables at home offers many benefits. In addition to providing a worthwhile hobby that can increase your physical activity, having control over your own produce can reduce exposure to a number of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. This translates into foods that are healthier for the body and the environment. Gardens also can help the average person save money on often costly produce, all the while reducing gardeners’ carbon Waitingfootprints.toreapthe rewards of a harvest can try the patience of those accustomed to satisfying their needs on a moment’s notice. This is especially true for young gardeners who have grown up in a society that increasingly provides immediate gratification. While tomatoes, peppers and watermelons require long growing seasons, many other fruits and vegetables grow much faster. DID YOU KNOW? Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. HOW TO CLEAN AND PREPARE OUTDOOR FURNITURE FOR THE SEASON As temperatures rise, people increasingly venture outdoors to soak up the sun, enjoy the mild breezes and entertain under the open sky. Clean and comfortable furniture can make outdoor entertaining that much more enjoyable. After months in storage or nestled under protective tarps, outdoor furniture likely needs a good cleaning before it’s put to the test once again. Mildew may have formed, insects may be hiding out within cushions or other crevices and dirt may have accumulated - even if the furniture was cleaned before being stored away. Experts recommend cleaning outdoor furniture between three and four times per year to keep it in optimal condition. Before cleaning, determine the material your furniture is made of, as some cleaning products may not be safe for all materials. When in doubt, read the care tags on cushions and other products or refer back to the original packaging for cleaning instructions. Always test a cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first.

Yogurt Flatbread Serves 4 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon coarse salt 21/2 cups plain yogurt Olive oil Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases. * You can keep ice cream from dripping out of the bottom of a cone. All you have to do is just place a small marshmallow or a piece of marshmallow in the bottom of the cone before you fill it with ice *cream.Ourfamily loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to my work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York

Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

* To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I also did this on his workbench. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled them out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas

Part of the reason that skin wrinkles is loss of collagen, but it is not at all clear that consuming more collagen, or any protein, will increase the collagen in the skin and therefore reduce wrinkles. You can save a great deal of money by consuming collagen, if you decide you want to, from time-honored sources like chicken broth. Some collagen supplements are made from parts of animal carcasses that contain heavy metals and other toxins, so I would be wary of supplements.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Medicated creams like vitamin A derivatives (such as retinol or tretinoin) work by increasing collagen production in the skin. Vitamin C creams help prevent the breakdown of the existing collagen in the skin. Vitamin C breaks down quickly, so these creams need to be handled sparingly. Moisturizing the skin makes it appear fuller and helps prevent further damage, especially when a daily sunscreen is included.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Several months ago, I started adding 25 grams of whey protein to an afternoon smoothie each day. I was worried about muscle loss after reading an article. I have seen the sagging muscles and skin in my arms and thighs. I am a 71-year-old woman, who plays tennis twice a week and goes to the gym about once a week. I have friends my age who have started adding collagen powders to their smoothies to improve their skin and prevent further facial wrinkles. After researching collagen supplements, I learned that they contain collagen peptides and protein. The dosage and ingredients vary by vendor. What is the correct collagen dosage and ingredients I should be looking for? Is the protein in collagen the same as the protein in whey? -- R.K. ANSWER: All proteins, such as whey and collagen, are long strands of amino acids. A “peptide” is two or more amino acids connected, while a “polypeptide” is 20 or more amino acids. A protein is a polypeptide that has a function in the organism. Proteins are broken down by acid and enzymes in your stomach, back into their component amino acids, to be used anyplace the body has need for them.

They can seem to just keep coming. There may be two generations a year. In the fall, the population is determinate, so they won’t keep coming forever. You might be able to beat them this way if you are persistent. Keep washing them off the side of the house. Being on guard in the fall may be a difficult task as their march – or flight - continues after you have intercepted a batch. The bug prefers seed bearing boxelder trees. It feeds on the seed case (helicopter) similar to all maples. Some sources indicate removal of the seed bearing boxelder trees will alleviate the problem. Boxelder bugs do not do serious damage to trees and other plants and are not a risk for stinging. They lay eggs mostly in boxelder trees and elsewhere including those helicopter seed wings lying as debris on the Vacuumground. up box elder bugs and dispose of contents in a tight container. What’s the best solution to this problem? Powdery mildew on these plants is very common, especially toward the end of the season. It can be reduced or avoided by providing good air circulation – open space, staking and weed control among the plants, watering with a soaker hose instead of overhead, and avoiding excess application of fertilizer or late season fertilizing. It is easier to prevent than to treat. There are resistant varieties available. Fungicides including organic remedies are available. Lower and upper leaf surfaces should be treated. This link provides more details for this problem: https://extension.
We are being overrun by boxelder bugs! There are no box elder trees nearby that I can find. However, the tree that has those “helicopters” hangs over my garage (not my tree). I can kill the ones I find with soapy water, but they just keep coming. Soapy water will intercept many bugs. Depending on where they are located and annoying you may make a difference in how you go about trying to stop them. Boxelder bugs may be found on a structure foundation at this time of year but are not looking for winter quarters so not likely to appear inside.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.
4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.
In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific,
1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.
3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

• Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.
