POISON PREVENTION TIPS
Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safety protocols that can save lives.

Whiten clothes
Lemon juice acts as a bleaching agent, so throw your whites into boiling water with a couple of lemon halves.
Remove water spots
Use lemon juice to remove stubborn watermarks from glass doors.
Lemons have been around forever but were first introduced to the New World in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Since then, lemons became a staple in households, for medicinal uses, and were also seen at one point as a sign of wealth. There is more to a lemon than just the flavor and its acidic properties. Lemon juice is used in herbal remedies, it is a quick fix for many ailments, and is even used for preparing at-home beauty treatments.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE
Maintain your vehicle. Poorly maintained vehicles endure undue stress that can be prevented by adhering to routine maintenance schedules. Peruse your vehicle’s owner’s manuals to determine the recommended intervals to change the oil and replace the air filter and spark plugs. These simple maintenance tasks are easy and inexpensive, but they make it easier for engines to run smoothly and make efficient use of fuel.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES
Consider “certified” pre-owned vehicles. Many dealerships stand behind vehicles of a certain age and condition. Often called certified pre-owned vehicles, these tend to be lease turn-ins that are between three and four years of age and may still be under full or partial warranties. Certified pre-owned vehicles remove some of the worry associated with buying used since warranties will cover the repair costs of certain parts, such as the engine and drivetrain. Plus, the dealerships’ mechanics have given the vehicles health checks before listing them for sale, certifying their condition and mileage.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
Be a lost pet ally
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother and I saw a dog that matched the photo of a lost dog on flyers around the neighborhood. We tried calling him, but he ran off. So we told our mom what happened, and she called the number on the flyer. I don’t know if the owners found the dog. We’re wondering if we did the right thing. Why did the dog run away? -- Brian and Sarah in Cincinnati
Patience
Certified pre-owned vehicles at a local dealership have already been vetted and met certain standards to earn that designation, but buyers must do their own vetting when buying from private sellers. That requires patience as buyers peruse vehicle history reports provided by the seller (or gather them on their own) and don’t rush to buy cars that could ultimately prove to be lemons if they’re not vetted properly.
DEAR BRIAN AND SARAH: You did the right thing by telling your mom so that she could call the owners and tell them where you spotted the lost dog. Don’t feel bad about the dog running away: Lost dogs are o en shy of strangers. Some will not even come when their owners call. But, by telling them the location, the owners have a much better chance of recovering their dog.
Here’s how you can support owners who are searching for a lost pet:
-- Take a photo of a lost pet flyer with your smartphone. You can instantly refer back to it if you see a pet matching the description.
-- Don’t call or chase a dog or cat if you spot it. Contact the owner as soon as possible and give them the location where you spotted the pet.
-- If the pet approaches you calmly, try to keep them in place by petting or giving them treats, until you can put a leash on them and bring them to a safe containment area. Contact the owner or local shelter.
-- If the pet appears to be ill or injured, carefully approach and wrap them in an old blanket before attempting to pick them up.
-- If the pet is being aggressive, contact animal control.

Tim Pratt – Bridging History and Nature at Tinker Nature Park
BY SUZIE WELLS
Tim Pratt wears many hats in his roles as Program Director at the Hansen Nature Center and Director/Caretaker at Tinker Homestead and Farm Museum in Henrietta. With a deeprooted passion for environmental education and history, Tim has been at the helm of Tinker since 2006, guiding its growth and fostering connections between the park and the community.
Tim’s journey to Tinker Nature Park is a culmination of his lifelong dedication to history and environmental education. Armed with a Master’s degree in Early American History from SUNY Buffalo, his path was influenced by a series of mentors who shaped his passion for the natural world and history.
His initial inspiration came from an Environmental Science class taught by Ron Walker, a former RH Sperry teacher and the first park naturalist at Tinker. is experience, coupled with Tim’s time at Finger Lakes Community College’s Environmental Conservation program and undergraduate studies at the University of Wyoming, solidified his desire to blend the two fields. Professor Colin Calloway at Wyoming inspired Tim to pursue a degree in Early American History, a choice that seamlessly integrated with his work at Tinker Park.
Employed by the Town of Henrietta since 1992, Tim says, “I’ve been involved [with Tinker] from the very beginning. I first served on a volunteer advisory committee for the Homestead, was involved in the construction and restoration phases, and now focus on programming and education for both the Homestead and Hansen Nature Center.”
As Program Director, Tim manages the park’s budget, oversees projects, and coordinates a variety of events. His favorite part of the job? “Our community events,” he says. ese events, ranging from educational classes to seasonal celebrations, are central to Tim’s work, allowing him to engage directly with visitors and promote both environmental education and the history of the Tinker Homestead.
Tim says the major challenge he has faced is enforcing the park’s No Pets policy. Since 1997, the Town of Henrietta instituted the policy for Tinker Park, including all trails and property, and the policy includes all dogs and pets, leashed or not, because “By their very nature, dogs are a threat to wildlife. ey leave behind traces of their presence that cause wildlife to take cover or leave the area. is greatly reduces the opportunity for conservation and diminishes the value of our trails and natural areas.”
Tim’s role goes beyond managing daily park operations. He is also deeply involved in partnerships with various organizations, schools, and local businesses. Collaborations with groups such as the Cornell Master Gardeners, RochesterBeekeepers, and local scout troops enhance the park’s educational offerings. “We partner with R-H for field trip programs, but we also provide opportunities to schools outside the district,” Tim notes. ese partnerships, along with initiatives such as the NYS Birding Trail, highlight the park’s commitment to conservation and education.
Over the years, Tim has witnessed changes in outdoor education and conservation, particularly with the advent of technology. “ e message has remained the same – ‘Take care of this planet, it is the only one we have,’” he says. “But improvements in technology [have led to] an increase in Citizen Science-based conservation efforts, providing more data for research and conservation strategies.”
For Tim, inspiration comes from the ability to merge his two passions – history and environmental education – and sharing them with the community. Tim says the community’s appreciation and care for Tinker Nature Park has been amazing.
His advice to the public is simple yet profound: “ ere is always something new to learn in this field, and you are never too old to learn something new about the environment, wildlife, and conservation. Don’t be afraid to get outside and explore. ere are plenty of opportunities to do so right here in your own community.”
Tim Pratt’s dedication to Tinker Nature Park is evident in every aspect of his work. His blend of historical knowledge and passion for environmental education continues to shape the park’s role in the community, ensuring Tinker remains a cherished resource for

Veggie stands
What a lovely feature of our part of the country… home grown veggies, eggs, flowers for sale or for free by the side of the road. Grabbed some gorgeous sunflowers, succulent zucchini, and candy-sweet tomatoes tonight in Sweden. Makes me proud to be living here. Thanks neighbors.
Wonderful family stopped to help
Since when is it legal to drive an electric scooter down [street]? No, not just on the sidewalk but in front of moving vehicles. Then, with no helmet either. He was following a lady on a Vespa style scooter, both roughly doing 10 to 15 mph in a 30 zone. Oblivious to others, they just didn’t care. And then they went around the intersection using crosswalks, then back into the road. Where are the police? If any injury happens it should be NO fault to the drivers, regardless of the cause.
Yard/Garage Sales
We cannot thank the family in the black SUV (Lincoln maybe) that helped push our car to the side of the road when it died in traffic on RT332 near Carmens Way. At 77 years old I started to push it and all the members of this family got out from their SUV and pushed us to the side to safety. The OC Sheriff came along and kept us all safe. Monday the 12th of August reset my thoughts of who would help others today. We had only moved here (Farmington) for a year and a half, and now we know that among the fleeting moments of our lives there are the people who would "jump to help.” I didn't get names, but I wanted to post this so that perhaps they will see this and know how thankful we are. God Bless you wonderful good Samaritan family.
If you’re selling an item that’s defective or with no apparent damage, have the decency or class to point it out before you have your hand out for the cash. I bought an item, not cheap either, and I later found that it had cracks inside that leaked. You had to know. You even said you’re selling it because you’re moving. Your neighbors said differently. I tried contacting you hoping you’d do the right thing or at least tell me if there’s anything else I should know before I order the replacement part. Nope, you’re not man or woman enough to do so. Sure, it’s on me for buying at a yard sale, but either way, I’ll see you at your next sale.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS
Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

MOMENTS IN TIME
The History Channel
* On Aug. 24, 1875, Capt. Matthew Webb of Great Britain becomes the first person to successfully swim the English Channel without assistance. Webb reached shore in 21 hours and 45 minutes. In 1883, Webb attempted to swim the Niagara River and drowned in 10 minutes.
* On Aug. 25, 1950, in anticipation of a strike by railroad workers, President Harry Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army, saying it was necessary for the protection of American citizens as well as “essential to the national defense and security of the Nation.” He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants.
* On Aug. 26, 1974, Charles Lindbergh, the first man to accomplish a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, dies in Hawaii at age 72. To reduce weight during his famous 1927 flight, everything not essential was left out: radio, gas gauge, night-flying lights, navigation equipment and parachute.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Accutane Isn’t To Blame for Affecting Woman’s Fertility
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is in her 30s and has been experiencing infertility for several years. She and her husband have been tested, and the issue is her egg quality. She’s had several rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with no success. At age 19, she was prescribed Accutane for her acne. She had to take a monthly pregnancy test in order to take this medication. I researched this medication at the time and was aware of the depression side effects. I was also aware that if a pregnancy occurred while taking this drug, it would have to be terminated. The situation was not a concern at the time. Now, years later, her fertility doctor says that she has eggs, but they are of poor quality. What is your opinion on this medication affecting fertility? I read that Accutane was banned in 2009. -- C.M.
ANSWER: Isotretoin (Accutane) is the most effective treatment for acne, but it has the potential for serious side effects and can only be given after a thorough review of its risks.
I have to correct two misapprehensions: Although brandname Accutane was discontinued in 2009, generic isotretoin was not banned and still remains an extremely beneficial treatment that is safe when used appropriately. Secondly, there is no obligation while on this medicine to commit to a pregnancy termination.
Great care needs to be taken to prevent pregnancy, with repeatedly negative pregnancy tests before starting therapy, as well as two forms of birth control in any person who could get pregnant (unless they are abstinent). There is a high likelihood that a baby who is exposed to isotretoin will experience severe damage or be stillborn. If a pregnancy occurs while on isotretoin, the drug must immediately be stopped, and the person needs to be referred to an expert in reproductive toxicity. A pregnancy termination should be discussed, but the decision is always up to the patient (except where prohibited by law).
Although isotretoin can cause severe damage to the developing fetus if taken during pregnancy, a study showed that any effect on fertility was gone 18 months after treatment. There are many reasons why a woman can have difficulty getting pregnant, due to eggs that are less likely to get fertilized. Age is a major factor, but many genetic conditions, chemotherapy, radiation, viruses (including COVID-19), and autoimmune diseases are known causes.
I wish your daughter the best of luck. I have had several patients give up after several rounds of IVF, only to conceive a healthy baby naturally.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION
Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project.
Apermit may be issued the day the application is submitted, while other cities and towns may issue permits up to two or more weeks later. Factor permit fees and processing times into the renovation plan.
If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.
Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
dictate the kind of bar homeowners can have. Rolling bar carts are popular and versatile, and they can be kept stationary or rolled in and out of a room as needed. If a bar cart is open, organization is key, as you don’t want it to look unkempt.
A full-blown wet bar will require more construction, including plumbing and electricity if you need outlets for plugging in appliances. Wet bars are ideal in dens, renovated garages and finished basements.
CLEARING & GRADING
SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN
Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.
When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommendedrungorengaginginriskybehaviorwhileontheladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far.
When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.
CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING
There are many different types of carpeting, some of which are best suited to certain situations. For example, plush and saxony carpets are better in low-traffic areas. These carpets may show footprints and also vacuum tracks and dirt, but they’re higher on the comfort spectrum than other types of carpet. Berber, which is more flat and dense, helps mask stains and tracks. It is durable in high-traffic areas. Textured carpets like frieze are cut from fibers of different heights, so they mask stains and are also softer on the feet than berber.
Install a low-flow shower head. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful and costly. Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.
MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER
For cleanliness, water circulation and filtration is essential. This helps spread the chemicals to all areas of the pool and also helps to remove debris. Filters come in different types, including sand, diatomaceous earth, or DE, and cartridge. Each has its pros and cons. How long to run the filter depends on water temperature, gallons of water in the pool and the estimated water turnover rate of the filter. Pool owners can start with longer filter run times and gradually cut down until they find the right rate based on water appearance, according to popular pool forum Trouble Free Pools.

Summer fun that is close to home
Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host summer movie nights when participants can view a movie on the big screen while under the stars. EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE
(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.
Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.
“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”
It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”
Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.
“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”
To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

Here’s A Tip
BYLINE: By JoAnn Derson
* If your bananas start to brown on the outside, put them in the fridge. ey will still get brown, but the inside stays firm instead of getting mushy.
* “I used double-faced tape to stick a couple of clothespins inside the cabinet under my sink. I can hang my gloves under the sink when I am finished with the dishes.” -- T.C. in Minnesota
* Help nylons and tights retain elasticity by giving them a final rinse in diluted vinegar before hanging dry. Never add nylons to a heat dryer.

UNIQUE WAYS LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN WORK TOGETHER
Form a local business network. When one business on Main Street is thriving, others tend to follow suit. That’s especially true when businesses network in the hopes of creating a bustling local shopping district.Local business owners can organize a network via social media or in person communication. Encourage business owners to share what worked, and didn’t work, as they built their businesses. Local networks also can be a great forum to plan and pitch community-based events like festivals, holiday bazaars and other functions designed to bring more consumers to Main Street.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
