HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day, but can be especially hazardous in the early morning sunrise and late-afternoon sunset.

AUTO SECTION

A 2017 study published in the journal Medicine titled, “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a life-threatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement. Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. As anyone who has turned into blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest, driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

May, June and July consistently rank among the most popular months to get married. These months typically provide pleasant weather, and if it does rain, it’s often in the form of a brief thunderstorm.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE

www.facebook.com/LakeGlenApartments

(NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * An armadillo’s shell is so hard that it can deflect a bullet, as a Texas man discovered to his chagrin when he took aim at one. The bullet ricocheted into his jaw and he had to be airlifted to a hospital. The armadillo, on the other hand, strolled away unscathed.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have a number of feral cats living in the wooded area behind our house. I know that these cats normally can’t be acclimated to indoor living, but watching their colony expand isn’t desirable, either. So I’d like to get them to a vet and have them spayed or neutered, and either rehome them somehow or release them again. Any tips on doing this? — Sharon in Atlanta DEAR SHARON: The most common and probably most effective way to catch feral cats is to trap them one at a time using a live trap. They are available at hardware and home-improvement stores, at some pet stores or online. Before starting, find out if there is a feral cat rescue organization in your area. In Atlanta, the nonprofit LifeLine Animal Project may be able to loan you traps, as well as provide sterilization services. Otherwise, contact the veterinarian you plan to work with and make sure he or she is OK with treating, spaying and neutering the cats, and find out the prices in advance. Depending on laws in your area and on who owns the woods behind your property, you may only be able to set the traps on your property. If the feral cats don’t visit regularly, you’ll first need to lure them using food they’re attracted to. When they come around looking for this food, set up the live trap. Trap, neuter and release (TNR) programs typically release the treated cats back into their home territory, as relocation often doesn’t work. Expect the cats you trap to continue their lives in the woods — with the realization that the colony likely won’t grow over time. For many years, we have been able to provide this service to the Livonia Community, as well as other communities in Livingston and surrounding counties. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Do Cats, Goldfish Mix? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My daughter received a goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? -- Judy G., Seattle DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention -- if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too -- but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year.

We now need your help. According to a recent inventory, we have a need for electric lift chairs, wheel chairs and four wheel walkers. All donated equipment should be in good working condition. Please consider donating. The easiest approach is to simply leave any equipment on the front porch of the Livonia Village Office (36 Commercial Street). The donated equipment will then be taken to our Rotary Medical Loan Closet. If you have larger items, such as lift chairs, please call the number below and I will arrange to pick them up.

Coccomyces dentatus continue to grow in diameter and thickness is a species of fungus in the family to the point where it looks like someone Rhytismataceae. A widespread species, splashed tar on the leaves. Symptoms tend particularly in temperate areas, it colonizes to be more common on trees growing in the dead fallen leaves of vascular plants moist, sheltered locations. Impact: This and is commonly found on oaks, chestnut disease is usually a cosmetic problem and maples. Symptoms: Tar spot is one and does not affect the long-term health of the most readily visible and easiest of the tree. Heavy infections can cause maple diseases to diagnose. It’s also one premature leaf drop – a circumstance of the least damaging ailments on its that causes great consternation to host. The first tar spot symptoms usually homeowners because lawns are littered show up in early summer as small, light- and must be raked before autumn green to yellowish-green spots. The spots typically arrives. Management: Since tar enlarge and color intensifies as summer spot fungi overwinter in fallen leaves, the

most effective management technique is to rake and destroy leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering “spots” that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will destroy many of the spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring. Applications of fungicides

are possible when high levels of infection become unacceptable, but control of tar spot is challenging, especially on mature maples. In addition, if others in a neighborhood setting are not managing the disease on their trees with fungicides or proper sanitation, the act of spraying may be a waste of time and money. GAS GRILL SAFETY TIPS Do not turn on the gas if the grill lid is closed. If the gas is turned on while the lid is closed, gas can build up inside and potentially ignite, causing the lid to blow off. So men and women should always make sure the lids of their grills are open before turning on the gas.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, but I’ve been feeling sad, worried and angry, as well as irritable, for the past four months or so. I force myself to function. My family doctor prescribed a 37.5 mg dose of Effexor once a day to start and after one week, twice a day. I looked up the side effects and what I read scared me. Instead, I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of St. John’s wort daily for almost three weeks, and I have noticed no discernible effect. I told my doctor I would take the Effexor after three weeks if the St. John’s wort hasn’t helped. Should I take his advice? Are there better alternatives? I am middle age and take zero prescription drugs. -- S.M. ANSWER: St. John’s wort, Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flower that has been medicinally used for centuries. Initial studies suggested benefit in people with mild to moderate depression, and several substances in the flower have been shown to have pharmacologic effects on serotonin receptors, among other effects. However, other trials have shown it to be no better than placebo. It does have important drug interactions, fortunately not an issue for you (as long as you let the St. John’s wort wear off before starting Effexor), but for some people the potential interactions are dangerous. Side effects are not common, but include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and confusion, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual side effects. It can make people more sensitive to sunlight, and may decrease fertility. The studies that did show a benefit lasted four to 12 weeks. It is possible you might not have had benefit from it yet, and waiting a little longer -- say another week -- wouldn’t be unreasonable to really give the St. John’s wort a chance. However, I seldom recommend this herb due to lack of consistent benefit in trials, the potential for drug interactions and a concern about poor regulation of supplements in terms of amount and purity of the ingredients. For people who want to avoid prescription medicine, I have often recommended S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). The evidence is better and the side effects and drug interactions fewer. Effexor may be a good choice for you. Prescription antidepressants have been shown to be better than placebo, but they certainly do not work for everybody. If Effexor isn’t a good choice, there are several others. However, I would strongly recommend you consider nonpharmacologic treatment for depression whether or not you decide to take additional medication treatment.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Growth plate injuries: Kids Health says growth plates are the areas of growing tissue near the ends of the long bones in the legs and arms in children and adolescents. A growth plate produces new bone tissue. If the growth plate is injured, it cannot do its job properly. That may contribute to deformed bones, shorter limbs or arthritis. Growth plate injuries most often result from falling or twisting. While there’s no surefire way to prevent growth plate injuries, getting proper and immediate care after an injury can help prevent future problems. An orthopedic surgeon has the expertise to diagnose and treat these injuries.

Add health screenings to back-to-school checklist An essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children’s health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school. Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings. Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school. Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year. While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. Students who have specific learning disabilities or medical conditions that require classroom modification should obtain recent documentation from any therapists or specialists prior to beginning a new school year. Doing so facilitates the process of setting up procedures within the school while ensuring children have what they need to excel in the classroom. All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file. Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins. This ensures kids won’t be starting off on the wrong foot because of vision problems that could already have been addressed. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself. MEN CAN GET MANICURES FOR THEIR WEDDING DAYS, TOO A variety of wedding day cosmetic preparations are geared toward the brideto-be. Gentlemen generally limit their wedding pampering to a haircut and possibly a self-tanning product to have a golden glow in their wedding photos. As social norms continue to relax and guys grow more comfortable and confident taking care of their skin, hair and bodies, the list of services men undergo in advance of special occasions may widen. One service that many men have already embraced is the manicure. Manicures neaten the fingernails and treat the skin and cuticles of the fingers and can be just as beneficial for men as women. In fact, male-geared hand and foot grooming have already sprouted a niche market, including the Hammer & Nails Grooming for Guys franchise that was featured on the popular show “Shark Tank.” Nail technicians can help guys achieve a clean look and alert men to possible underlying health issues present on their hands and feet. According to Dr. David E. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails. Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary. First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail. • Nails are cut and filed. • Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles. • Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed. • Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage. • Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail. Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

* Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal. * The process of things being stretched out and torn apart as they enter a black hole is called spaghettification. * Our senses of taste and smell are cut by 50% and 20%, respectively, during flights, which is why airplane food has never tasted so hot. Magic Maze –– BRAKE ‘BREATHE EASIER’ HEALTHCARE DONATION PROGRAM (NAPSI)—Healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic are in desperate need of creative solutions to the lack of personal protective gear and supplies that help block harmful airborne pathogens. But civic-minded companies can help. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com. “NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

Rosita’s Way… A Sanctuary for Senior and Special Needs Chihuahuas BY SCOTT WURTZEL

T

here is a reason dogs are referred to as “man’s best friend.” They are loving and social animals that, if trained and well cared for, will always be by your side. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs end up being abused and/or abandoned by their owners, left with no place to go, but thatís where rescue shelters and sanctuaries come in. Bonnie Mason runs Rosita’s Way, a sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas located in the Canadice/Hemlock area. After her chihuahua, Rosita, passed away, Bonnie started the sanctuary to rescue and care for other chihuahuas, making sure that they can live out their lives in peace. The sanctuary officially started in 2015. One might wonder what a chihuahua sanctuary would be like. “Our tagline is Where love and acceptance heal,” Mason explains. “It’s a true sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas to come and live their lives out, where they get proper medical care and love for whatever time they have. We do get some hospice cases, so sometimes it’s not too long. We are just the true meaning of the word sanctuary.” These dogs do face a lot of issues due to their breed. According to Mason, chihuahuas are the second most euthanized dog breed, right behind pit bulls. They are also the second most common dog breed found in shelters. “The biggest issue is that people use them as accessories,” Mason states. “Unfortunately, as we all know, when movies come out about different kinds of dogs, those dogs suffer because everyone then wants one. The biggest problem is more out west. California at one point was receiving chihuahuas in their shelters at a rate of 200 a day. Most of them the median age is 10, because once they become seniors, then it’s not so cute to carry them around anymore because they have their medical issues.” Also, due to the high demand, there is a lot of overbreeding, and this is the cause for an increase in chihuahuas with special needs.

Despite the many issues involved with these dogs, there are still ways for those who wish to help to get involved. To Mason, the best way to get involved is to volunteer at different rescues, even if they aren’t specifically for chihuahuas. “Volunteer for the things not everyone wants to do,” Mason explains. “A lot of fundraising happens at yard sales; I can’t for the life of me to get anyone to volunteer to help with a yard sale. It’s the harder things that everybody needs more help with, it’s the get-yourhands-dirty, do-some-work things.” Mason also says that there are plenty of people willing to come play with the dogs, and that helps, but “there needs to be hands-on in the other areas, too. There is a lot to what we do.” If you can’t find the time to help out with a handson approach, you can donate to one of many dog rescue charities. Mason says that you just need to do your research, and in terms of local charities, she has “worked handin-hand with Suzy Q Dog Rescue.” She worked with them to foster a dog, but the dog remains in their care. Mason has also worked with out-of-state organizations such as Long Way Home Adoptables out of Texas and Pink Heart Rescue in Indianapolis.

Old age and disabilities are the biggest reason why these chihuahuas have trouble finding homes. “The dogs we take in are deemed either unadoptable or difficult to adopt out,” Mason says. “We have only honestly had two unadoptable dogs, and they were unadoptable because they were liabilities. One was a bite risk to humans. You never knew what was going to set him off, and that’s a huge liability. You cannot adopt a dog out like that. The other one was super tiny but extremely dog aggressive and had gotten into fights in foster homes. She had basically worn out her welcome in the rescue she was in, so she came to us.” The dogs that are hard to adopt are usually ones with a lot of medical issues. Those types of dogs are ones that will sit in a small rescue for a long time.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Biggest Raise in Decades for Social Security? Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%, the largest since 1983. For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. (There’s a bill in the House of Representatives -- H.R.4315 -- to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. Look for savings everywhere you can find them. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In March 2019, the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans celebrated its 125th anniversary by offering a free seven-night stay in the presidential suite, along with complimentary private dinners and spa treatments worth $15,000. But this wasn’t your everyday giveaway -- the prize was only available to the person who returned the “most outrageous” item ever stolen from the hotel!

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you keep a couple of crackers in your sugar jar, they’ll keep the sugar from caking. * Cucumber is a speedy diuretic. Try snacking on slices for a cool treat. Or deseed slices and slip a few in your glass of cold water. * “When we go to the doctor with our youngest, we bring a few crayons. She’ll lie down on the exam table paper, and we draw her outline. Then she can fill in her face and other details. This usually calms her while she is waiting. The doctor even has used the outline to talk about her body to her.” -- E.S. in Georgia * “In older houses, you might have a problem with cracking drywall when trying to hang pictures. You can solve this by placing a bit of clear tape over the spot where you’re going to drive a nail. It goes right in. If you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking. It does the same thing, keeping the wood from splitting.” -- P.K. in New Jersey * To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. This also will help bags to come out of the can easier. * Boost your metabolism by drinking green tea ... hot or cold. Try it over ice with honey and a sprig of mint. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. Homeowners who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. It’s best to consult a local landscaping professional in your area to determine the best time to water each day, but in many regions the best time to water is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are generally lower, the sun is not at its peak and winds are not as strong.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining a satisfactory level of disinfectant will help prevent the multiplication of bacteria and algae in the pool. Many pools are kept clean through the use of chlorine products. The ratio of chlorine to water needed to maintain the clarity of the water depends on the size of the pool, the sanitizer used, weather, sunlight and evaporation, and the pH. In many instances, the available free chlorine in a pool when tested should be between 3 and 4 ppm to offer adequate sanitation. Frequent testing will help pool owners gauge how well the pool water is holding chlorine and how to compensate if extra is needed.

S E V RA Lovely cemetery A big Thank You goes out to whomever lovingly cares for the Union Hill Cemetery. The monuments are trimmed around and the grounds are mowed regularly. There are no tall weeds to wade through when visiting deceased friends and family. Your efforts are very much appreciated and deserve recognition! Thanks to so many! On Sunday, August 8th, I was involved in a rollover accident on 5&20 at Bragg Street. Thanks to so many that stopped to assist: Harley rider Bill and his girlfriend; Nurse Meredith and her son; EMT Mary and others that I didn’t get their names. Your help was greatly appreciated and has renewed my faith that people are kind and good. I owe you all a beer! - Sharon K.

Updated commandment Thou shalt not steal, whilst thou hath not to giveth back. Common courtesy We’re in obvious unchartered waters these days, but for those of you who bother to apply to the many open positions and agree to an in-person interview, not show up without so much as a phone call for explanation is beyond bad manners. Please have the common courtesy and decency to at least call and say you’ve decided not to waste the would-be employer’s valuable time! A new stadium As I looked at the rendering of the new multi-billion dollar stadium, I found it hard to see any difference from the present stadium. A field, seats, luxury boxes, etc., are pretty much what we already have and have paid for. They’re even going to build the new stadium in [local town] where the team has been for years. I’m a fan, just not a fan of this new stadium when the old one is just fine.

Horace W. “Pete” Buchholz August 20, 2021

“No funeral gloom, my dears, when I am gone, [No] Corpse-gazing, tears, black raiment, graveyard grimness. Think of me as withdrawn into the dimness, Yours still, you mine. Remember all the best of our past moments and forget the rest, And so to where I wait come gently on.” Ellen Terry

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Michael F. West August 19, 2021 Wilson, NC/Livonia, NY: After devoting 54 years to the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Susan; pouring his heart into five decades of fatherhood with dad jokes and antics aplenty; cherishing every moment as a beloved Grampy always up for an adventure, Mike West of Wilson, NC died at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC on Thursday, August 19, 2021. Mike spent his 72 years building a family with Susan and impacting lives wherever he went. He began his extensive professional career at Rochester Products in Rochester, NY before enrolling at Elim Bible Institute in Lima, NY to receive training for ministry. His first pastoral assignment brought him to a small church in Canton, PA, followed by a move to Williamsport, PA where he served 10 years as pastor of Agape Fellowship. Subsequent to his cherished time in the church, he returned to his engineering roots, spending 13 years at Kidde Aerospace in Wilson, NC where he discovered his passion for Continuous Improvement, motivating him to pursue and receive his MBA from Regent University, one of his proudest achievements. Mike advanced his passion at Sikorsky Helicopters in Coatesville, PA, and eventually retired from Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, DE in 2017, becoming a full-time Grampy and Mustang enthusiast. Whether furthering his education, making memories with his family, or preaching the Word of God... his zest for life was apparent. If you have ever met Mike West, you would know he was a hardworking man who always put his family and love of Jesus first, finding joy in all the little things, like a perfect slice of chocolate cake. He will be missed immensely and never forgotten. He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty and his son, Todd. He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Leslie, SuAnne, and Molly (Mark Aldrich); son, Matthew (Emily); father, Francis; brothers, Brian (Sandy), Daniel (Karen), and Frank (Wendy); sisters, Barbara and Colleen Hay (Earl); mother-in-law, Frances Ball, sisters-in-law, Jackie Peck and Cindy Prunier ( Joe), 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.

Doris Shutt Teachout Goodine of Margate, Florida, age 90, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2020. Doris was a graduate of Dansville Central High School, married Robert Teachout on August 1, 1948 and together they had 5 children. The family relocated to Florida in 1972 where she lived out the remainder of her life. Doris was a longtime member of the North Creek Presbyterian Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion and Eastern Star. Predeceasing Doris were her parents; husbands, Robert Teachout and Gerald Goodine; sister, Lorraine Carver, and brother, Richard Shutt. Doris is survived by two sisters, Marian Kennell and Alice Conaway; her children, Mary White, Mona Alongi, Susan Campbell, Carol Merian and Paul (Dinah) Teachout. Doris had 8 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Dansville Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Junction at victoryjunction.org.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

A private family viewing was scheduled for Friday, August 27, 2021 at Joyner’s Funeral Home in Wilson, NC. A graveside service and burial will be held privately at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Livonia, NY. Local arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., Livonia. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Mike’s name to an organization furthering a cause that was close to his heart: JDRF.org To send a condolence or share a memory, please visit www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com 346-5401

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts. In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
