HAVE KIDS; WILL TRAVEL: MASTER VACATIONING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN Travel early morning or late at night. Morning flights tend to be less crowded and are less likely to have takeoff delays that can push kids into meltdown mode. Kids are apt to be tired in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, so traveling, whether by road or sky, when they’re likely to sleep can be advantageous.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

Get along? We all know the traffic congestion on the west side of [local town] gets really ugly. Traffic comes to a halt due to construction, but must we lay on the horns and curse at each other while we all sit in traffic? I can’t believe how nasty drivers have become all because there’s construction. F-bombs and horns are blowing with no one able to move. People have changed for the worst. This is no longer a sweet town with sweet people. You anger someone in a car, and you’ll get flipped off or crashed into or cussed out. Why? Please stop this behavior. We are all stuck in traffic, and no one is going to move any faster with swear words and horns.

S E V RA

Tailgating I’m so sick of tailgaters, especially in the early morning. I do the speed limit or maybe 5 mph over. With all the deer this time of day, you would think drivers would back off a bit. Nope, right on my “butt.” If a deer runs out and I have to hit my brakes, guess what’ll happen? If the speed limit is too slow for you, just pass. What ever happened to common sense?

Be quiet! It’s summer and people’s windows are open at night for air. So, when you and your buddies decide you want to go on a fishing trip at 3:30am, you should keep that in mind when you’re having the utter disregard for your neighbors and waking them up with your hollering and laughing. It’s bad enough your old boat makes enough noise pulling out of the driveway. So rude!

Lima Library The Lima Public Library would like to thank Dipper Dan for generously donating 60 single scoop cone coupons to participants of our 2022 Summer Reading Program! Thank you for supporting our readers, our community, and the library! We appreciate you and all you do! Summer Concerts Thank you to all the towns, groups, and organizations that are having community concerts this summer. It is so refreshing to see everyone getting out and about to enjoy great tunes and warm weather once again!

Thank you Werner’s Farm Market The individual attention you give to your customers is the reason I keep coming back. It’s nice to know that the satisfaction of the people who patronize your place of business is important to you. That is not the case with all businesses, and is refreshing to see.

As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.” Where To Turn To help, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support, and implementation of Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. Patients and caregivers can access more information about recovery and how to make informed decisions at www.StrokeAssociation.org/recovery.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

DID YOU KNOW? Being overweight or obese is a serious medical condition that can affect people of all ages. Carrying around too many pounds can be especially problematic for children because it may put them on the path to health problems that once generally only affected adults. Such issues include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic advises that childhood obesity can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. Fortunately, improving kids’ eating habits, such as ensuring kids eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, and increasing physical activity are two ways to help kids maintain healthy weights. Parents who have concerns about their children’s weight should consult with a pediatrician, who may recommend a body mass index test.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

LIVONIA ROTARY MEDICAL EQUIPMENT The Livonia Rotary Club wants you to know that if you need hospital/home care equipment, we are just a phone call way. For many years, we have been able to provide this service to the Livonia Community, as well as other communities in Livingston and surrounding counties. On an annual basis we have been able to assist more than 100 families. The medical equipment that they receive has been donated and is provided, at no cost, to those in need. We now need your help. According to a recent inventory, we have a need for electric lift chairs, wheel chairs and four wheel walkers. All donated equipment should be in good working condition. Please consider donating. The easiest approach is to simply leave any equipment on the front porch of the Livonia Village Office (36 Commercial Street). The donated equipment will then be taken to our Rotary Medical Loan Closet.

DO I NEED BUNION SURGERY? Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS • Foot & Ankle Surgeon practicing in Denver, CO • Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons

(NAPSI)—One in five Americans suffers from bunions. A bunion, or hallux valgus, starts out as redness and a bump on the side of the foot near the big toe. Over time, bunions can cause chronic pain and restrict movement. Bunions are progressive and don’t go away on their own, so it’s important for people with bunions to see a foot and ankle surgeon who will evaluate the severity of the deformity and develop a treatment plan. Nonsurgical treatments may reduce the chance of damage to the joint and ease the pain of bunions. However, these treatments will not reverse the deformity itself. If the pain begins interfering with normal daily activities, surgical intervention will typically be the next step. Until recently, the procedure had been very painful and the recovery difficult. However, foot and ankle surgeons have made several advancements in surgical techniques and patients return to normal activities sooner. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks. Foot and ankle surgeons implement pain management techniques following bunion surgery, including using nerve blocks, postsurgical pain pumps, and vitamin C and calcium supplements. These let patients recover fully with minimal pain. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon nearby, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS is a boardcertified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Alarming Rate of False Positives Plagues Lung Cancer Screening ---

Christian Counseling Services Specializing in:

Marriage & Family Addictions • Depression • Parenting

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small. 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans, and sometimes an invasive procedure, to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means the risk that this nodule is cancerous is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancerous is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You also should have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains to be the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside. ~Maud Hart Lovelace, Betsy-Tacy and Tib, 1941

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * M.F. in Washington writes: “For taking to a party: Melt vanilla chips in the microwave, adding by handfuls and heating for about 15 seconds at a time. After 15 seconds, stir and repeat until chips have melted. Then dip small clusters of green grapes into the melted vanilla chips.” * “I read your tips in a Rochelle, Illinois, newspaper. The paper is sent to me by a friend, and I love the tips. Here is mine: For homemade spray and wash, mix 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap.” -- K.W. in Tennessee * When purchasing school supplies, remember that paper, pencils, etc., typically aren’t on sale mid-year, so stocking up is a good idea. Just make sure the deal you are getting is a good one. Then put it away for distribution later! * I lay out my school clothes and even my hairbrush and stuff to get ready. I put my shoes and socks by the front door. I am always ready before my sister, and I get to watch TV while she is running around. -- R.G. in Florida

Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Games for Brain Training Cognitive brain training can keep our cognitive abilities functioning better for 10 years. The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) is not a new study, but it bears looking at for what it offers seniors in terms of cognitive abilities. The government-funded study followed 2,832 seniors with an average age of 73 after they completed 10 training sessions and four booster sessions 11 and 35 months after the initial training. Participants were divided into four groups: memory training, reasoning training, speed of processing training and a control group with no training. What the study aimed to look at was cognitive abilities and performance in everyday activities, and they collected updated data at the one, two, three, five and 10-year points in the study. What researchers concluded was that seniors reported less decline in cognitive abilities for 10 years in the reasoning and speed portions, not the memory, which dropped off after five years. All this in only 10 training sessions plus four booster sessions? Authentic brain training programs can be found online but generally require a monthly fee. There are others, however, that we can sample for free to create our own training program. Try the dozen brain games at www.mentalup.co/blog/free-brain-games-for-seniors to see if you like these types of challenges. Look online for “free senior brain games,” and you’ll find many sites with free games to play without having to give any personal information or pay a fee. The best “brain stretching” might come from doing a variety of games. Choose from crossword, jigsaw, sudoku, chess, mazes, word puzzles, logic and more, switching around from day to day. Or go to Amazon.com and look for puzzle books. Look at the sample pages to see if they look too easy or too hard. For a great challenge, look for online Scrabble games where you play against the computer! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

Congregate Meal Program Supporting Seniors in Livingston County L

ivingston County residents age 60 and older looking for a healthy meal and some social activities need look no further than the Office for the Aging’s Congregate Meal Program (CMP). Available at four locations throughout the County, the CMP provides nutritious noon-time meals, which meet the federal standard of one-third of an individual’s recommended daily calorie allowance for optimum nutrition. In addition to healthy food, the program also offers diners fellowship and socializing along with their lunch, said Livingston County Office for the Aging Director Sue Carlock. I’d like to think of it as nourishment for both the body and mind,” said Carlock. “It’s known that socialization is one of the most effective ways for seniors to improve their mental health. And sharing a delicious and healthy hot meal with others has a way of breaking down barriers and bringing people together over the table. This is a wonderful resource for our older residents and I encourage more of them to take advantage of it and join us.” Program officials suggest a contribution of $3 per meal, but said no one will be denied a meal because of inability or unwillingness to pay. LAWN & LANDSCAPING RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Summer Heat Can be Deadly to Pets PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside.

PLUMBING

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Maintaining the proper chemical balance of pool water will help keep it clean and protect system components from damage. The pH level of pool water measures its acidity or alkalinity. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 for best results. Latham Pool Products says water that is too acidic can cause eye and skin irritation and damage liners or equipment with corrosion. High pH may cause cloudy water and make chlorine less active. Again, frequent testing helps pool owners understand their water chemistry better and make adjustments.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way.

STORAGE SPACE AVAILABLE 1,200 sq. ft. cold storage unit at Retsof Plaza. Electricity, loading ramp, parking. $600 per month.

Call 243-2758

2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.

Appointments Required Limited number of spots available. Open to residents of Genesee, Livingston & Wyoming Counties

The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.

I want you to know how special your family is to us and we are here for you. •At time like these it is best to lean on your faith and your friends. Whichever one is closer. Your __________ will be forever missed.

“Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.

Master

Gardeners Should I prune my rose bush now? Always prune after your plants bloom (deadheading) except if your rose bush forms lovely rose hips that are also a feature of some species and varieties. Cut flower roses lie hybrid teas and many modern hybrids considered ‘everblooming’ will require faded flowers to be removed. Those flowering stems are best reduced by half to stimulate a second and third set of flowers throughout the season. Why is my lawn is turning brown while my neighbors aren’t, even though neither of us irrigate? On any given turf area or in a neighborhood, we can see a wide variety of responses to the current drought. Following is a list of factors

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County that will affect how fast a turf shows droughty symptoms or dormancy: • Species: Tall fescue is one of the last to show drought symptoms, many days to weeks following bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Since dormancy is a survival mechanism, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass tend to survive drought better • Mowing height: Higher the mowing height, deeper the roots and the better the ability to find water lower in the soil, but the higher mowing height has to be established in the spring • Compaction/heavy soils: Compacted soils force shallow rooting • Sodded lawns tend to show drought faster

than seeded lawns because sod tends to have less root density than seeded lawns of the same cultivar and species, primarily due to soil texture differences between sod field and lawn • High fertility or heavily irrigated will show drought symptoms faster • Spring fertilizer vs heavy fall fertilizer: Better rooting with heavy fall fertilizer • Shade from an abiotic source like a building tends to keep area cooler and turf will retain

color longer • Shade from a biotic source like a tree will compete with turf for the water and turf always loses • Heavy traffic areas tend to show dormancy faster • Thick thatch leads to shallow rooting in the thatch and very rapid drought symptoms • Insect (grub) feeding or patch diseases also enhance dormancy symptoms

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY

Magic Maze ASSOCIATED WITH CROWDS

Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.
