RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm vehicle maintenance and inspections. Private individuals and some smaller ridesharing services drive fewer hours per week than many taxi companies. That means personal vehicles may be in better shape than taxis. Drivers must maintain their vehicles and have them inspected according to local regulations. Passengers can ask to see service records and should only accept rides in vehicles that appear to be in good repair.

Parents have a host of options at their disposal w hen the time comes to buy new cars for their families. W hile dad might have long dreamed of driving the fastest sports car on the market, such a vehicle does not make much practical sense w hen car trips figure to be made w ith kids in tow. Finding the right car for a family depends on a host of factors, as w hat makes a good vehicle for one family w ill not alw ays make a great choice for another family right dow n the street.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS (NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes. 3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror. 4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. Learn More: For further facts and tips about good driving from the experts at Driving-Tests, founded on the universal belief that everyone can be a safe driver, go to https://driving-tests.org. Mix mayonnaise, sour cream and chipotle peppers. Spread over top of salad. Cover and refrigerate up to 8 hours. Just before serving, sprinkle top with chips and sliced avocado, if desired. Toss to serve.
CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Dr. Christopher Harris (left) and Dr. Patrick Whipple (right) review current GV BOCES School Library System practices and websites in anticipation of upcoming grant forums.
GV BOCES School Library System Receives National Grant BY MAGGIE FITZGIBBON
T
he Genesee Valley BOCES (GV BOCES) School Library System has been awarded a National Leadership Grant for Libraries in the area of a National Forum in response to the need to identify recommendations for effective post-COVID school library programs. This $150,000 grant will fund four virtual national forums on the future of school libraries. Given the high level of complexity, national scope, and emergent nature of the investigation, a collective impact approach will be used to gather together diverse viewpoints from across the country. Topics will include instructional design for remote librarianship, emerging services for teaching and learning, defining the role of the school librarian, and program considerations for new learning models. Reports generated from these forums will provide actionable recommendations for school librarians across the country. Christopher Harris, Ed.D., Director of the GV BOCES School Library System, wrote and submitted that grant and will serve as the project coordinator. Patrick Whipple, Ph.D., Director of GV BOCES Professional Learning Services, will lead the grant evaluation.
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
The first work in the grant project will be the convening of a national advisory panel. Advisory panel members will include the School Library System directors from New York “We are City and Erie 1 BOCES, as well leading this as, directors from Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools, Norman national effort (OK) Public Schools, the past to... meet president of the American student needs Association of School Librarians, and others. in this

During the COVID-19 pandemic, school libraries across the country made changes to procedures, spaces, and instructional practices out of necessity. Across the many models of in-person, hybrid, and remote instruction adopted by districts around the country, there were even more models for school librarians and the services they provide. It is essential that we take time after the immediate pressure of the pandemic emergency to reflect, understand, and evaluate those modified practices. The need for investigation is especially critical in those

“The grant project is called Libraries Today,” Dr. Harris noted. “We are looking at where we are today and where we want to be moving forward. This grant will give us a chance to guide the national policy discussion around school libraries.”
The School Library System new future!” - Dr. Christopher Harris is a Genesee Valley BOCES Program. GV BOCES operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services providing shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben counties in New York.
“What we want to do is take a hard look at what the pandemic brought to school libraries and really figure out what worked,” Dr. Harris explained. “We are leading this national effort to bring together thousands of school librarians from across the country to plan out how we are going to move forward to meet student needs in this new future.”

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
GAS GRILL SAFETY TIPS
Are Dog Treats Bad for Fido's Health? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I use dog treats to train my 18-month-old puppy, "Jif." At the dog park, an owner said that using treats is bad and that Jif will eventually get fat. That's hard to believe, as he is really energetic. He only responds when he knows there is a treat after each command. What do you say? -- Lee in Alexandria, Virginia
The

Store tanks away from the house. Propane tanks should always be stored away from the house. Near the end of each grilling season, homeowners may want to use what’s left of the gas in their propane tanks so they don’t have to store tanks over the winter.

DEAR LEE: Ah, to treat or not to treat! That's a big issue for many pet owners. Ultimately, you are in charge of Jif 's training and health. Unsolicited advice from other dog owners is only a little helpful, at best. I've interviewed and observed champion breeders and trainers, and one thing I've noted over the years is that some dogs get a treat at every turn, for seemingly every move they make. Other dogs do fine with a treat at the end of their routine. And backstage, when show dogs are being groomed, primped and prepped? They're getting treat after treat. These are champion dogs in top shape. Things to note with using treats: * Treats help build a positive association with specific commands or actions. * The pros use treats that are as healthy as possible: no byproducts, no preservatives. They're often homemade. * Treats are cut into very small pieces. They can be given more frequently without adding too many calories. * Dog treats don't replace meals. Make sure your puppy is fed on time each day with the recommended amount of food for his age and weight. It's possible to replace some of Jif 's treats with other positive associations. Praise, attention, a favorite toy -- things that bring him joy. Build that anticipation of reward in different ways. Check out a few training books, or work with a dog trainer on new ways to reward Jif.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Energy bills tend to be high in summertime, when many people crank up their air conditioners in an attempt to combat the heat. For some households, higher energy bills might be stretching their budgets, while others might be looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Conserving energy can help homeowners save money and help the planet at the same time. And reducing energy consumption in the summer does not require men and women to sacrifice comfort in the name of conservation. In fact, various strategies can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their summertime energy consumption.

* Berries are in season, and there’s no greater time to stock up. But don’t feel like you have to make jam out of all the berries. Freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Later they can be popped into muffins and quick breads, as well as eaten straight out of the bag for a delicious treat.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

* “Do you love burgers? Here’s a great thing our family does that saves money and is very handy: When ground beef goes on sale, we buy a large quantity and premake many burger patties, seasoned and shaped just as we like them. Then we separate them with butcher’s paper cut into squares. We put them in stacks, and then into empty bread bags to store in the freezer. When we are getting ready to cook out, the patties don’t have to be all the way defrosted, just put on the grill and cooked up!” -- A.J. in Florida * Okra, which is at its peak July through September, makes an excellent stew thickener. But it’s quite yummy on the grill as well, brushed with olive oil and lightly seasoned. Just be sure you don’t wash it until you are ready to use it. There’s a natural protective coating on it, and if you wash it off, it’ll get slimy. * Old socks can be fitted around the head of an old mop or Swiffer base. Spray with cleaner and clean away. When you are done, remove the sock and launder.

Invest in ceiling fans, which can move air through the home. This will help prevent pockets of hot air in certain spaces. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even in homes with air conditioning, ceiling fans enable homeowners to raise the thermostats on their AC units by about 4 F with no reduction in comfort. Attic fans can draw heat out of a home through vents, also helping to reduce indoor air temperatures. These devices can reduce reliance on air conditioners, especially on moderate days or cool nights.

ROOFING STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Maintain air conditioners. Air conditioners contain air filters that, over time, can wear down and become dirty. The DOE notes that the relatively simple task of replacing and cleaning these air filters can reduce air conditioners’ energy consumption by as much as 15 percent. If the unit does not respond after routine filter maintenance, the DOE (energy.gov) lists issues with refrigerant, thermostat sensors and drainage as some common air conditioner problems. Homeowners who suspect these issues can contact certified professionals to inspect their units and perform any necessary repairs.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS If you find a honey bee swarm on your property, contact a local beekeeper who may be able to safely collect and relocate that swarm so it will produce honey and provide the additional benefits associated with healthy bees. People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop natural immunities.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER
OTHER
Nearly every pool owner has had to deal with algae at some point in his or her life. One of the best ways to minimize algae spores in the pool besides high-sanitation levels is through routine brushing and vacuuming. According to Leslie’s Pool Supplies, pool walls, floors and steps are the most common places to find algae in a pool. If left untreated, algae can burrow their roots inside the cracks on these surfaces, making them very difficult to remove. That’s why weekly (or more frequent) brushing and vacuuming can help keep surfaces clean and algae-free. Vacuuming also helps remove debris that has fallen into the water and sunk, which can decompose and contribute to water cloudiness.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Save Money With Phone Plans, Price Matching With the price of everything going up, we need to save our dollars every place we can. Here are two ideas: PHONE PLANS -- If you want to save money on your cellphone plan or the cost of a new phone, there are a dozen or so providers that offer reduced-rate plans for seniors. Some offer a new phone, some will let you use your existing phone and many will let you keep your current phone number. Most offer unlimited talk and text, but prices will vary based on download speeds and data caps. Most also don’t require a contract, but if part of the deal is to buy a new phone from them, you might run into a penalty if you cancel before the phone is paid for. Call around to the phone service providers in your area and ask about senior plans. Be sure to look at their websites to check out the phones. You might need larger buttons or other special features. Better yet, if they have a store near you, go look at the phones in person. Don’t let yourself be talked into a long contract that you don’t want. PRICE MATCHING -- This is a good way to get deals on things you want if you hunt for bargains. Some stores make it their policy to match lower prices found elsewhere. You’ll need to have proof, however, meaning they’ll need to see the current price on the competitor’s website. Your best bet is to call and ask whether they’ll look online right from their store, or if it’s enough for you to print out the competitor’s online ad. It’s mostly the bigger chains that have these policies, but even a local store might be willing to price match just to get your business. Remember to ask for your senior discount everywhere you go! (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

S E V RA Sending our thanks The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our 2021 United Way and SEFA donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community. A friend during the storm I would like to thank Amy Catto for all her support when I was going through a tough time with my husband. I met her when I was going for a walk in the park. She noticed I was sad and asked me what was wrong. I told her about my situation, and she comforted me. She and I met every day after that, and we drank coffee and chatted. I am not having problems with my husband anymore! She gave me more support than a marriage counselor would, and she did it for nothing! I hope to help you and your family in the future, Amy! Brockport Labs are the best! On Tuesday, August 3rd, I went to the lab to get blood drawn and another test as well. What a job to have, but at Brockport lab the phlebotomists always do an excellent job. I have bad veins, as well as being “chicken little” when it comes to getting blood drawn, so they have to be extra attentive so that I don’t turn green. Yes, I was told one time (another lab) that I actually turned green when they had difficulty finding a good vein. So, a shout out to Cassandra Taylor who had to deal with me and my bad veins! Not only was she pleasant and made me feel comfortable, but she knew what she was doing. It was painless and quick. I didn’t even bruise, which is a telltale sign when someone doesn’t do their job correctly. Cassandra, I look forward to seeing you next time around, which will be about 3 months from now! Thank you for doing a job well done!
Fragrance chemicals Not many know this but manufacturers are not required to list their fragrance ingredients on product labels. Often only one word, “fragrance” is used on the label and can hide a cocktail of more than 100 toxic ingredients. This is because fragrances are considered to be “trade secrets.” The fragrance industry regulates itself, so that safety testing does not have to be confirmed by regulators before products are sold to consumers. Fragrance also contains phthalates, which are toxic. Fragrance is classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins, and carcinogens. These chemicals can pass from your skin (from clothes) into your blood. You also breath them in. Many products sold are scent boosters which is a boost containing many of these toxins. It’s not real scent; it’s all chemicals. Please be careful to your health. Fragrances are in almost every product we use. Speaking truth I want to agree with the person who vented last week about the senior apartments in a local town. I have had bugs in my apartment for a few years now. My carpet is disgusting. I’m embarrassed when I have company come visit. If someone dies or moves, they might paint or put down another cheap carpet. There are a couple of buildings that have had no fire alarms for a month now. The owner has everyone over a barrel. They know we are senior and are on a fixed incomes, and now we got a notice that our rent is going up at least 35.00 starting next month and 3% every year after. But never has anything been said about routine maintenance and upkeep. [Local town] needs more senior apartments that are modestly priced. If anyone is in agreement, please let your voice be heard! Stuck in intersection The person complaining about the rude, impatient driver is a rude, inconsiderate driver. A driver is required to ensure they can make it through an intersection before entering. The person who got stuck is in the wrong. They should wait behind the stop line until the intersection clears before going through. If the light changes while they are waiting, they cannot just go through because they waited. The timing of the lights ensures that too many vehicles can’t go through an intersection so that the flow of traffic is as smooth as possible. People trying to beat the light to avoid being forced to wait another light cycle cause delays for everyone. So, stuck in the middle of the intersection is the rude inconsiderate driver here.

Daniel D. Madden July 28, 2021
David L. Crane “Dave” July 31, 2021
Lakeville: At age 90, Daniel passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at his son’s home in Rochester, NY and was a longtime resident of Lakeville, NY. He was born in Buffalo, NY to the late George and Carrie Madden. Daniel is predeceased by his son; Daniel G. Madden. Survived by his son; Robert D. Madden, along with his grandchildren; David, Mandy, Courtney, Manuel, Matthew, Mitchel, Dan, and Jennifer. Friends and family called from 4-6PM on Wednesday, August, 4, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. A graveside service was held at 11AM on Thursday, August 5, 2021 at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 800 Pine Ridge Heritage Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14225. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com 346-5401
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses.
Patricia Dehmler Willis “Pat” August 2, 2021 Lakeville, NY: Pat passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 2, 2021 at age 84. Predeceased by her husband George F. Willis and daughter Kathleen L. Piccone.
Livonia: At age 73, Dave passed peacefully on July 31, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was born on August 25, 1947 to the late Hillard and Mickey (Annis) Crane. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Booher) Crane in 2002. Survived by his loving companion, Sandra Brown of Livonia; daughters, Lisa (Marvin) Crane of Livonia and Colleen (Mike) Crane-Bianchi of Lima; grandchildren, Kyra, Scottie, Helena, and Joseph; and sister Nita (Chuck) Marken. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Proud Kodak retiree, no Fujifilm in our house. Cranie was an outdoor enthusiast from deer hunting to fishing. We became a large family because of dad’s wonderful friends that have always been there through thick or thin. He is a member of Hemlock Sportsman’s Club, Livonia Legion Lifetime SAL Membership, and was also a member of the Moose Club. A Gathering to Celebrate Dave’s Life will be held at 4pm on Friday, August 6th, 2021 at the Hemlock’s Sportsman’s Club, 4883 S. Main Street, Hemlock, NY. Interment will be held in the future at Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Livonia, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487. To send a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com 346-5401
CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a memorial garden. Speak with an area park ranger to determine if you can donate an engraved sitting bench or construct a tranquil garden space in a loved one’s name.
Survived by her sons, Thomas “Tom” (Vicki) Willis and Theodore “Ted” (Connie) Willis; son-in-law Perry Piccone; 7 grandchildren, John, Jessica, Stephanie, Jacob, Christopher Willis, and Nicholas, and Anthony Piccone; as well as 4 great-granddaughters, Kylee, Lilly, Malayah, and Ellia. Also survived by many other loving family and friends including the Rogers family who after the passing of her husband loved her as one of their own. Pat retired from Rush-Henrietta Central School and was always a caregiver throughout her life. Taking care of her father, mother, husband, and daughter during their illnesses. She loved to play golf and was always available for friends and family many times putting their needs ahead of her own. She always had a smile on her face or gave you the Pat wink when she was near you. Her friends loved her. Her family adored her. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, August 14th, at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road, Pittsford, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1120 S. Thank you We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives. We appreciate the support, generosity, caring and love you all provided our family and continue to give during this difficult time.
“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head…but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair.” ~ Chinese adage
Thank You, The Bongiorno Family
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.
There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
SPOUSAL LOSS While the loss of a spouse can greatly impact the surviving partner, losing a lifetime companion can be devastating. Aside from overwhelming grief, surviving spouses’ lives may be complicated by their own ill health. With all this in mind, researchers have observed a “widowhood effect,” which refers to an increase in the chance of dying for the elderly after a spouse’s death in the first three months following the loss. At this point, it is crucial for family and friends to show their love and support in very practical ways, by offering to cook meals, buy groceries, clean, and provide transportation to doctor’s appointments. There is also a great deal to be said for simply spending time with grieving individuals. Because couples function as a team, the death of a spouse can present a complicated set of difficulties for the bereaved person. These issues go beyond having to handle their grief since the surviving spouse may need immediate help handling basic day-today responsibilities. As with any other death, it is important that you be patient, compassionate, and understanding when helping someone grieve the death of a spouse. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Studies Don’t Support CDB Oil for Depression ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? -- D. ANSWER: There are animal studies and some preliminary data suggesting that cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive substance found in cannabis, might be effective for anxiety and depressive disorders. I hope that CBD will be proven to be a useful treatment for depression, as what we have now certainly isn’t perfect. However, there are not yet high-quality studies supporting this use. The fact that your son can’t go out while taking the CBD suggests to me that it may not be effective. While the pills he had previously cannot be used, there are many treatments available for depression that have better safety and effectiveness data than CBD. Most forensic drug testing uses THC and its metabolites, so if what your son is taking is truly CBD, then it should not be identified during testing as THC. There is a chance that the “CBD oil” he purchased has THC in it: In one study, 57% of CBD oils sold were found to have measurable THC, which would show up on a drug test. Unfortunately, 25% of the oils contained no CBD at all. I remain convinced that these drugs, THC and CBD, need to be properly studied, and when found to be useful, tested for purity and content in the same way as pharmaceuticals. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION: 7 SURPRISING AND INSPIRING THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
Experienced in correcting complex & routine dental problems
(NAPSI)—For people on the transplant waiting list, returning to health is a real and remarkable possibility. In fact, more than 90 Americans get another chance at life every day thanks to organ donors. How many of these inspiring facts about donation and transplantation in the U.S. do you know? 1. Transplants literally keep people alive. In 2016, doctors gave former NFL quarterback and head coach Sam Wyche just days to live. Then, the same day Sam said his goodbyes, he received a new heart from a donor and a second chance at life. After the surgery, Sam said he “felt 20, 30 years younger” and he’s now back to biking, riding horses, and traveling to see his grandkids’ football games. 2. One person can give many life-changing gifts. People can donate organs (heart, liver, pancreas, intestine, two lungs and two kidneys) plus tissues (corneas, skin, heart valves, and other parts). Altogether, one donor can save up to eight lives and improve over 50 more. It’s incredible how one “yes” can change so many lives. 3. You can register online in minutes. You can visit organdonor.gov to sign up on your state registry as an organ, eye, and tissue donor. It’s wonderfully fast and easy to make a difference. 4. You can donate at any age. You might think that when organs turn 60 or 70, they’re ready to retire. Nothing could be further from the truth! A 93-year-old liver donor from Texas once saved the life of a 69-year-old teacher; and in 2017, one of every three donors was over 50. 5. Transplants grow with young recipients. Organs transplanted into children can grow and function into their adulthood and beyond. These gifts can last a lifetime. 6. A little goes a long way with livers. When transplanted, a segment of a donor’s liver will grow within a recipient until it achieves the functional capacity of a whole liver. 7. Recent innovations mean more possibilities. Vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) like face and hand transplants involve multiple kinds of tissue, and they’re giving hope to service members wounded in combat, people injured in other traumatic situations, and those born with missing limbs or severe disfigurements. Registering as an organ donor does not provide authorization for VCA donation. Your family must provide that authorization at the time of your death. Learn more at organdonor.gov/vca. Discover more about the surprising and inspiring world of transplantation and sign up to save lives at www.organdonor.gov, a website of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Cornea: The cornea is the clear covering of the eye. The National Eye Institute notes that, unlike most other tissues in the body, the cornea does not contain blood vessels to provide nourishment or protection against infection. By donating their corneas, donors can help restore sight to people who lost theirs due to disease or injury.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
