MORCILLA CON SETAS (BLOOD SAUSAGE WITH MUSHROOMS, SPRING PEAS AND MINT OIL)

Serves 4

1 pound morcilla blood sausage

1 pound mushrooms, sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, slivered

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons white wine

1 cup shelled spring peas

1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint

2 tablespoons mint oil

Mint Oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup chopped mint

Pinch of salt

Cut the blood sausage into 12 slices. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil with garlic, salt and pepper for 5 minutes. Add the wine and cook for 2 more minutes. Boil the peas for 2 minutes and drain. When mushrooms are done, remove from heat and stir in the peas.

In a cast-iron skillet, sear the morcilla in a dry pan for 2 minutes per side. Arrange the slices of morcilla down the middle of a platter. Surround with mushroom/pea mixture and drizzle the plate with the mint oil.

Stray Cats Take Out Local Chipmunk Population

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, a pack of cats have started wandering on my property, especially at dawn and dusk. Two of them are wearing flea collars, with no ID tag; the rest have no identification. I don’t approach or feed them. Some of them might be my neighbors’ cats, but I don’t know. Since they started prowling my three acres, the chipmunks and birds that used to frequent the yard have disappeared. How do I deal with this cat problem? -- Tracy in upstate New York

DEAR TRACY: Contact your local municipality -- city, town or county -- and visit their website to find out if they have an animal control officer. If they do, contact them and explain the problem.

Now, most rural areas have few to no animal control officers assigned. So you may be told that they only respond to calls where the animal poses a threat -- aggressive dogs, bears, rabid raccoons and so on. But reporting the cat pack is still important. Furthermore, ask them what resources exist in your area for dealing with stray cats.

Here’s a few other tips:

-- Is there a TNR (trap, neuter, release) program active in the area? Contact them for advice.

-- Ask your nearby neighbors if any of the cats belong to them. If so, ask politely if they can keep the cats indoors.

-- Take a photo of the cat pack and post it on social media. Ask if any of the cats have been reported missing.

-- Contact local shelters for advice. ey probably won’t take in feral cats, but you can bring in friendly and approachable cats that don’t have identification. Purchase a cat carrier so you can safely transport them.

A skill that has always existed improves the aesthetics of our homes, shields us from every weather, and ensures we have a good night’s sleep even in the coldest weather. Sewing is that skill. National Sewing Month is celebrated to honor this artistic practice that fashions our bodies and adorns our homes all year. So, grab your needles and start sewing.

The Singer sewing machine, the world's most popular sewing machine, was invented in 1851.

Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Sewing Month in 1982. 2

Fine examples of today’s youths Saturday, August 19th there were 6 young women at Lehigh and East Henrietta Rd advertising a car wash at the Rush-Henrietta High School. They were energetic, polite and fun. I went to the high school and the rest of the group and the adult in charge were just as fun. As a resident of Henrietta I was so happy to see young people volunteering for the school. Thank you all. You put a big smile on a cranky old woman’s face. Thank you, you made my day.

Wedding Showers

The tradition of a wedding shower is to help a future bride acquire the necessary items needed to set up her new home. Today, more and more couples live together for years prior to getting married. What is the purpose of a wedding shower when most couples already have everything they need? As a guest, we are required to buy an expensive inconsequential item from the long list on the registry, and then spend an afternoon watching the gifts slowly get opened as if they have no idea what they are about to receive. Wouldn’t it make more sense to forgo the expensive shower expo and just go out and buy the gifts you preselected on the registry? Just food for thought.

It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.

Salvatore’s Pizza Family Introduces Innovative “I LOVE SCHOOL” Program to Celebrate 45th Anniversary

In a heartfelt gesture to mark their 45th anniversary, Salvatore’s Pizza Family has unveiled the “I Love School” program. A beloved fixture in the community since its inception as a high school home economics project in 1978, Salvatore’s Pizza is taking this momentous occasion to give back to the community that has supported them throughout the years. e program aims to foster a spirit of appreciation for education and hard-working educators by providing classrooms and students with incentives that highlight positive behavior, acts of kindness, and academic excellence.

e “I Love School” program is a testament to the pizza chain’s commitment to community engagement and its dedication to making a positive impact on local education. Ashley Maria King, President of Business Operations, expressed the company’s enthusiasm, saying, “We are always looking for new ways to get involved in our community, and with it being back-to-school season, we were trying to find a way to help teachers the best we can.”

e heart of the program lies in classroom nominations, where teachers, parents, and even students can nominate deserving classrooms to be part of this initiative. Nominations continue until September 30th, with the aim of selecting classrooms from every school in Monroe and surrounding counties.

Classrooms selected will win Free SuperSlice Cards to be redeemed for delicious slices at any Salvatore’s Full Menu location. e excitement doesn’t end there; select classrooms will also receive Free Large Pizza Cards, facilitating a Back-To-School Pizza Party sure to add a dash of excitement to the new academic year.

King shares that the program’s goal is to “donate SuperSlice cards to at least one classroom for every single school in Monroe County and surrounding counties. We hope to do more than one classroom per school, but this is what we are going to initially aim for.”

Kayla Kent-Moreira, President of Restaurant Operations, spoke about the potential of these rewards, explaining, “Teachers can use Salvatore’s SuperSlice cards as a gi for students, or to use as class rewards for attendance, good grades, or acts of kindness.” is innovative approach brightens the classroom atmosphere and reinforces positive student behavior.

Salvatore’s Pizza is deeply rooted in the Rochester community, and this program reflects its commitment to making a difference. e company has a rich history of engaging with the community through various initiatives, such as supporting local charities, including the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Camp Good Days & Special Times, and NEQALS EMT, and Rochester’s Do the Right ing initiative. Salvatore’s franchises sponsor a variety of community events and youth sports organizations. Salvatore’s is also known to buy out deserving Girl Scout troop cookie inventory to give away, and all locations offer free pizzas to veterans and active military personnel on Veterans Day. During COVID, Salvatore’s started a Feed Rochester campaign to donate pizzas to local hospitals and all first responder locations as well as nursing homes and homeless shelters.

“We are a local business, born & raised in Rochester, NY --and we do whatever we can to try to help our local community,” emphasizes CEO/Founder, Salvatore SoccerSam Fantauzzo. “We just want to put a smile on someone’s face and pizza in their hand.”

With the “I Love School” program, Salvatore’s Pizza Family reiterates its commitment to nurturing the potential of the next generation and fostering a sense of community that has been at the heart of their journey since the beginning. As nominations roll in and classrooms eagerly await the chance to participate, this initiative will leave an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Monroe and surrounding counties.

For more information about the “I Love School” program and to nominate deserving classrooms, please visit the official Salvatore’s Pizza website: www.salvatores.com/iloveschool.

The armed Arkansas militia troops surrounded the school while an angry crowd of some 400 whites jeered, booed and threatened to lynch the frightened teenagers.

Cash: Cash may seem impersonal, but couples tying the knot will no doubt appreciate an infusion of cash after saying “I do.” According to The Knot, the average wedding cost more than $35,000 in 2016. Even couples whose parents foot the bill for their weddings will appreciate having some extra money on hand that they can use on their honeymoons or put toward a home.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.

• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.

• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

Osteoporosis Screening for Men Remains Controversial

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are confused about the guidelines concerning when older men should be screened for osteoporosis. All the information seems to suggest that it is only needed for men over 70 who have had a fracture. In my husband’s case, he was only told to get a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan after he had back pain and several compression fractures of the thoracic spine (up to 70%), at the age of 72. His T-score was -2.8 for his spine.

I can’t help feeling that because he is male, weighs 200 pounds, has an active lifestyle and was previously 6 feet, 2 inches tall, the issue of osteoporosis just never came up during his yearly primary care visits (even though his height had decreased since at least 2019, and he’s now only 6 feet tall). This is a potentially life-threatening condition for older women and men, but the risks for women seem to get all the attention. What’s the reluctance to order a simple, fast, painless, not-too-expensive test to screen men earlier? -- B.W.

ANSWER: In general, screening tests (by definition, a test done on a person with no symptoms of the condition) are done when there is good evidence that the screening will lead to an improved outcome in the screened group compared to an unscreened group. The data in women is strong enough that all women over 65 and women younger than 65 with additional risks for osteoporosis should be screened with a DEXA scan, but there is not strong enough data to support screening in men.

Osteoporosis screening in men is controversial. While one of the most influential groups does not recommend screening in all men over 70, some groups do, despite an absence of proven benefit. They base this recommendation on the fact that, as you say, it’s not a particularly dangerous test (the radiation dose is small), nor is it expensive (the average cost is $150, but can be higher in some states). One major downside of testing in general is that no screening test is perfect. As such, an unexpected finding of osteoporosis in a man requires that the screening test be repeated to be sure the test result is accurate.

Even though men are not always recommended for screening, there are some medical findings that should prompt a test. One is a loss of height -- losing more than 1.5 inches of height should have prompted a DEXA scan. (Strictly speaking, this is no longer a screening; it’s an evaluation of the cause of an unexpected medical finding.)

A low testosterone level (either by itself -- hypogonadism -- or as a result of medical treatment for prostate cancer); primary hyperparathyroidism; inflammatory bowel disease; and longterm use of prednisone and similar drugs are all known risk factors for osteoporosis that should at least trigger a discussion of a DEXA scan. Similarly, the finding of osteoporosis in a man should prompt consideration of the underlying reason behind it, which could include any of the risk factors listed above.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS

Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

She’s receiving alternative therapies that are not covered by insurance, therefore she has to pay out of pocket to kill cancer this time. Any donation or help would be greatly appreciated so she can heal instead of stressing about how to fund these therapies. Please join us as we come together as a community to help li up a very special person!

Education is not limited to formal schooling in classrooms. We are continually being educated by our associations with other people, with nature and by our own realization of the meaning of the things we see around us. Such education leads to a more perfect understanding and the reasons why we are here.

Not everyone wants to be educated. Some not only ignore their opportunities to learn but actually resist all chances to gain a better understanding of life..... an understanding that could mean greater satisfaction and happiness.

You can call on us to provide advice and comfort as you would expect from your closest friends, in your time of loss. Our goal is to be worthy of your trust.

21/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

WHAT

SCHOOLS ARE DOING ABOUT CHILDHOOD

OBESITY

Extending lunch hours: Giving students adequate time to eat and digest can promote healthier eating habits. Research indicates that eating slowly can help a person feel full faster. According to Harvard Medical School, scientists have known for some time that a full stomach is only part of what causes someone to feel satisfied after a meal; the brain must also receive a series of signals from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract. Eating slowly may prevent children from overeating later in the day. That can be achieved by having more time to eat at lunch.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

FIREPIT SAFETY WARNING AFTER A MOTHER LOSES HER LIFE AND HER 11-YEAR-OLD SON BADLY BURNED DUE TO FIERY EXPLOSION

Nicole Foltz, a mother of five, died tragically three days a er suffering burns on most of her body a er a gruesome firepit accident in her backyard, according to multiple reports. She was only 38 years old.

She and her husband, Jeff Foltz, had initially started the fire to keep bugs away from their home, according to reports.

“‘I had just gone inside,’ said her husband, ‘and to my knowledge, she decided to try to keep the fire going, keep the fun going, and she put another log on it and there wasn’t much flame at all,’” Jeff Foltz said.

“But, she just — I guess she felt if she poured a little gas on it, it would reignite, and it did. I guess it must’ve traveled the gas stream up to the gas can, and it exploded in her hands,” he also said.

e explosion struck the family’s 11-year-old son as well. Mother and son were both transported to the Hospital. Foltz said the boy has second-degree burns on close to 40% of his body. He was hospitalized for 12 days, and returned home recently.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

FAST-GROWING VEGETABLES

Growing vegetables at home offers many benefits. In addition to providing a worthwhile hobby that can increase your physical activity, having control over your own produce can reduce exposure to a number of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. This translates into foods that are healthier for the body and the environment. Gardens also can help the average person save money on often costly produce, all the while reducing gardeners’ carbon footprints.

Waiting to reap the rewards of a harvest can try the patience of those accustomed to satisfying their needs on a moment’s notice. This is especially true for young gardeners who have grown up in a society that increasingly provides immediate gratification.

While tomatoes, peppers and watermelons require long growing seasons, many other fruits and vegetables grow much faster. This offers plenty of bounty in a short time for those who may have gotten a later start on their gardens or simply don’t have the patience to wait on the more time-consuming growers. Speak with a garden center expert to learn more about which vegetables, fruits and herbs grow quickly and will thrive in your home garden.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS

Honeybees are humble insects that benefit the environment in various ways. Unfortunately, many people lump bees in with wasps and other seemingly “harmful” insects and do whatever is necessary to remove them from their properties. But it’s important to be mindful of the beneficial roles bees play and to take steps to maintain healthy habitats so they can thrive.

Bees are one of the most important pollinators of flowers, crops and fruit trees. These small insects can make or break entire food supplies. They also pollinate clover and alfalfa that provide feed for cattle. Some experts place the economic value of bees at roughly $15 billion per year.

A consortium of universities and research laboratories that reported to The White House in 2015 found that beekeepers lost 42.1 percent of their colonies between 2014 and 2015. Bee populations continue to decline. According to the conservation organization Save the Bees, recent surveys suggest close to a 99 percent loss in bees over the last 150 years, primarily due to increasing agricultural intensification.

To combat this sharp decline in bee populations, people from all walks of life can do their part to help bees thrive once again. And by helping bees, individuals also may indirectly help other beneficial pollinating insects, such as butterflies.

Summer heat can be harmful in various ways. People and pets can quickly succumb to the summer sun, which can cause sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke when people and their animals spend too much time outdoors without adequate protection.

Landscapes are also vulnerable to summer heat, which can quickly spoil the most lush lawns and robust gardens. Effective watering can help lawns and gardens withstand summer heat, but improper watering can deprive landscapes of the water they need to survive.

Think about soundproofing, too. When upgrading windows, also think about how certain windows can cancel out noises and make homes more soundproof. Some windows can help reduce outdoor distractions like leaf blowers or lawn mowers.

For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN

Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION

Hit the ground running. It’s tempting for recent grads to take the summer off and have a lax approach to job hunting after all of the hard work they put into their education. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL

Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely.

Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
