If you find a honey bee swarm on your property, contact a local beekeeper who may be able to safely collect and relocate that swarm so it will produce honey and provide the additional benefits associated with healthy bees. People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop natural immunities.

ROOFING
POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

OTHER CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
........................Kathy Hammond
Just like humans, pets need a combination of physical activity and caloric moderation to maintain healthy weights. Daily caloric needs for indoor cats range from 180 to 200 calories per day. The larger a dog is, the more calories it needs.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS Is heat stroke immediately evident? Heat stroke can overwhelm dogs quickly, so dog owners should be especially diligent and watch their dogs closely when they are spending time outside on hot days. Dogs may first suffer from mild heat-related stress or moderate exhaustion before they begin experiencing the more severe symptoms of heat stroke, so dog owners should look for signs of stress or fatigue and bring their dogs inside immediately after noticing such symptoms. The consequences of heat stroke are severe, so dog owners should always err on the side of caution.

S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.
Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Help! My Cats Have Started Fighting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, Mitsy and Bitsy, got along well for nearly five years. Bitsy is 11 years old, about six years older than Mitsy. In the past couple of months, they squall and squabble with each other every time they’re in the same room. What is going on, and how do I stop it? -- Cara C., Albuquerque, New Mexico
TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR CARA: Take both of your cats to the veterinarian as soon as an appointment is available. Because the behavior just recently started after years of tranquility, a health issue could be at the root of their fighting. Senior cats are especially likely to develop conditions that cause them to be cranky or more territorial than usual. Pain from arthritis or other conditions can be a big factor in making Bitsy irritable, tired and just not in the mood to hang out with Mitsy. Likewise, Mitsy could be developing a medical condition; it’s best to rule out physical problems in both cats. Once their health has been assessed and treatment, if necessary, started, then the hard work of reconciling the two can begin. Keep the cats separated at first -- on opposite sides of the house, if possible, in closed rooms. Each day, reintroduce them by placing a small plate of food in front of each door and letting them out. If they calmly eat, then the next day, move both plates closer. Observe the cats as they eat; if they begin to growl or tense up, put both back into their rooms before they escalate -- fighting is very traumatic for them. Shift the bowls back a bit and try again. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Always practice summer sun safety Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water.

DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing. More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old,
THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
Magic Maze
By Keith Roach, M.D.
was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER Maintaining the proper chemical balance of pool water will help keep it clean and protect system components from damage. The pH level of pool water measures its acidity or alkalinity. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 for best results. Latham Pool Products says water that is too acidic can cause eye and skin irritation and damage liners or equipment with corrosion. High pH may cause cloudy water and make chlorine less active. Again, frequent testing helps pool owners understand their water chemistry better and make adjustments.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways. A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-inthe-dark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn * “To distinguish your keys, especially house keys that have similar stamps, simply paint the key head with different colors of nail polish. You could even add a very subtle dot of the matching polish on the key lock. Reapply as needed.” -- S.L. in Oregon

* If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. * “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland * Use a flat iron to iron your collar if it’s rumpled. This also works to straighten out buttonholes that have crimped.

Discover the Faces Behind Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital BY SCOTT WURTZEL
W
hen you go to a hospital, you want to know you are in good hands. The same can be said when we take our pets, and thankfully there are two practices in the area that meet those standards. Last June, both Dansville Animal Hospital and Midtown Veterinary Hospital earned AAHA accreditation. To put this accomplishment in perspective, less than 15% of all small-animal hospitals in the U.S and Canada achieve AAHA accreditation. The people behind these two veterinary hospitals are Ruel Maloco and his wife, Veterinarian Dr. Ami Maloco. Ruel is the VP and General Manager, while Dr. Maloco is the Medical Director at both locations. The Maloco’s have a great deal of experience from which they have learned much, and they bring that knowledge to their practices. “I think the best way to put it is that we work as a team,” says Ruel. “She works in the practice as our medical director, whereas I am our business logistics person to run the practice. We both came from the corporate setting from different industries. She was in the Veterinary industry, whereas, I was in Information Technology. We’re bringing a personalized, small business feel to the practices in which we work. There is no corporate feeling in the way we run our practice.” For Dr. Maloco, helping animals was something that started early on. “She had grown up working with animals,” Ruel recalled. “Her father works with animals in the Philippines, so she pursued that career here in the United States. I supported her in the practice, and that helped us expand to our second location in Midtown.” Ruel also talks about the reasons why they chose Dansville, and eventually Midtown. “Primarily, it was because of location and the community,” states Ruel. “Dansville was a great middle location for the surrounding area between Corning and Bath to the south, and Henrietta and Rochester to the north, so we were midway. As for expanding to Midtown, that was to help service a more populated area. It puts us right downtown in the middle of different clienteles.”

The couple are recent owners of these practice as well. “We actually didn’t establish the practice. We acquired the practice from a veterinarian who has been practicing for over 30 years here in Dansville,” Ruel states. “The one in
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
Midtown was also an acquisition from a longstanding practice of more than 40 years.” The Maloco’s purchased the Dansville Hospital in 2012, and the Midtown Hospital in 2018, ensuring that both areas would continue to have access to high quality veterinary care. Even though they are more recent owners, their hard work and dedication is already evident in their AAHA accreditation for both hospitals. “It’s a milestone for us because being accredited is not an easy thing to do,” Ruel explained. “It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of documentation and making sure we’re providing high quality medicine. The accreditation requires this high standard of medicine. It’s not just opening up the door and doing whatever we can. We’re actually doing things slightly different than many of the practices in the country.” Enjoy this article? an Yo On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. RELATED MATTERS Many people are confused about the differences between “pre-need” and “funeral preplanning.” Pre-need involves payment for funeral services and goods well in advance. By entering into a legal agreement to fund the arrangements, an individual commits to a particular funeral provider and makes regular payments to a third party (such as a funeral insurance company) over a set period of time. With preplanning, a person makes decisions about the type of funeral or burial, the type of ceremony, and the products he or she wants. The planning can be simple or detailed. The instructions are left for loved ones who will take care of the details when the time comes. No payment is required to preplan.
Please bring memories to share
Food • Music • BYOB
It is best to plan for your funeral before you need it. You’ll have time to set aside money for your funeral and burial in a way that makes sense for your unique financial situation. You’ll also be able to shop around so that you don’t spend more than you need to. If you would like us to help, or have more questions about how to pre-plan a funeral, please call our funeral home. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME accommodates all families. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.
