TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your

Many people count their blessings on Thanksgiving. Few, however, count their calories. Overindulging at the dinner table is a Thanksgiving tradition, and often paves the way for a season of poor nutritional habits with longlasting ramifications.

With so many options available on the Thanksgiving buffet table, it is easy to see how overeating is commonplace. Rather than wearing elasticwaisted pants and succumbing to too many fattening foods, individuals can make smart food substitutions that won’t compromise taste but will cut calorie intake.

The American Council on Exercise says that the average adult consumes 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat at a typical Thanksgiving meal. That is well above the USDA-recommended guidelines of 2,000 calories and 65 grams of fat that most adults should consume in an entire day.

We would like to thank the person who found and turned in our black checkbook at the Wegmans in Geneseo. We accidentally left it in our cart outside of Wegmans. We had already left when we discovered our mistake. When we got there, the cart and the checkbook were gone. The checkbook had been turned in to Wegmans by a very kind person with the words, “Keep it safe.” This person has our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude. He or she has rekindled our faith in people. Thank you from a very grateful couple! • 226-2526

Thank you to the couple who offered to pay for my groceries when the Farmington Tops was unable to accept my Food Stamp card because of a system breakdown. While I was able to pay with my credit card, I can’t help but feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t have someone as gracious to offer such assistance nor any other way to pay for their groceries.

Recently, I was putting a melon in my car parked in the BJ’s parking lot. A boy grabbed my purse and ran. The woman parked next to me asked, “How can I help?” Then, she called the police. A woman parked across from me said, “I’ll follow him in my car.” When the thief ran into an overgrown area, she called her husband who was in line to get gas. He came and went into the bushes after the boy, retrieving my purse. These good Samaritans stayed with me until the police left, losing at least an hour of their day. The police were professional and equally concerned. I offered compensation to my good Samaritans, which they refused, saying they were glad they could help.

Thank you!

Our summer is nearing the end, yet the flowers in the Avon Circle Park and the hanging baskets are beautiful and thriving! Thanks to the Avon Garden Club and those who keep them watered.

Thanks for Flowers!

RANTS

Flags are flown for many reasons. They show all who drive by our homes what we believe in; what we feel; what we enjoy and, more recently, what we hate. The flags that used to adorn our neighborhoods have quickly changed from inviting to dividing. This is all well and good; as freedom is what the most important of all the flags stands for: the American Flag. For anyone who flies flags, remember that the American Flag is to be respected. Rules have been laid out in the United States Flag Code. One of the most important rules being this: "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America.” This rule in particular seems to have been forgotten by some. If flags of hatred & vulgarity are that important to you, go on and fly them. Just be mindful of their placement on your flagpole.

You have to wonder just how serious some folks are about "climate change" and the environment in general. I drove past a very popular coffee shop in [local town] and noticed a line of 9 cars waiting in the drive thru to purchase rather costly coffee or items. How do they think sitting in their cars with engines running and spewing pollution of $5.00 per gallon gas is going to save the world for climate change?

e Livingston County Habitat for Humanity is seeking leads for new Board Members

• As with any nonpro t board, Habitat seeks board members that can contribute in various ways.

• Habitat for Humanity takes a community approach to provide a ordable housing for building new homes and renovating existing ones. Sweat equity is at the heart of this approach, where our homeowner partners provide labor that contributes to keeping the costs down and also o ers the community at large an opportunity to work with the homeowners.

NEXT STEPS

When making a raised garden bed, with what should I line the wood?

What is the easiest way to level an area of land to put down stone? What tool should I use?

• All potential board members are interviewed and their membership voted on by the existing Board.

• We have a need for board members with construction background or administrative experience, as we need both Construction Committee support and a future Secretary.

The size of the area you want to level will determine the tools you need. For a small area, you can use a shovel to move soil from the higher to lower area, then smooth it out with a garden rake. Larger areas can require use of earthmoving equipment sized to the scale of your project. A rototiller may be a good tool to start with at any size. You should also consider

Set the right temperature. The NSF notes that research indicates a bedroom temperature of roughly 65 F makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fluctuations.

Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or Low-E, coatings are a more expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application as heat shrink film.

Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney.

A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.

DID YOU KNOW?

The origins of Veterans Day can be traced to the ending of World War I nearly a century ago. Known at the time as “The Great War,” World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France. But the fighting had actually ended seven months earlier when an armistice between the Allies and Germany went into effect on November 11, 1918. The following November United States President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 “Armistice Day” in honor of the cessation of the hostilities, and the day became a federal holiday in 1938. That act was amended in 1954 after veterans service organizations, in recognition of the efforts of soldiers who fought in World War II,asked that the day be renamed “Veterans Day” so it honored all soldiers and not just those who fought in World War I.

It's essential that hunters exercise caution with their rearms at all times. Firearms should always be considered loaded, even when they're not. is approach should apply while hunting and while at home. Maintaining such a mindset can help hunters avoid dangerous, potentially deadly mishaps should they mistakenly believe a rearm is not loaded when it is.

When hunting, only point the rearm when you plan to shoot, making sure to keep your nger o the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Only shoot when a target is clearly identiable and you're certain about what is beyond the target.

Start at the green flag to find your way through the golf course and use the brown pathways to make your jump from hole-to-hole to the red flag finish.

Facts

Balls were originally made of wood. Some of the first golf balls were purely made of hardwood, such as beech and box trees. It was played on the moon. On February 6, 1967, Alan ‘Al’ Bartlett Shepard Jr. pulled off a one-handed swing with a six-iron golf club and sent the ball soaring through the moon’s low-gravity atmosphere. HEAD START

PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.

SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com

• Head Start is a no cost, federally funded preschool program for income eligible families. The program runs September-August.

HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious.

With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features)

• Head Start is a comprehensive child development program with supports for children with disabilities and for families with severe hardships.

ImagesGetty

• Head Start utilizes the High Scope curriculum which is research-based and child-centered, focusing on child strengths for positive child outcomes and school readiness. Many opportunities for family involvement.

Accepting applications for 3 & 4 yr olds for the 2022-2023 school year

ANSWER: I’m glad you can see the humor in the situation. With even one episode of incontinence, I would consider medication if the person wanted it after a discussion.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 55-year-old male in good health and was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged prostate several years ago. My primary care doctor said he wasn’t concerned enough to prescribe any medications. I get an annual physical, and there haven’t been any changes. However, in the past couple of years, there have been times when, once I get the urge to urinate, I’ve got to get to a restroom posthaste. But, it’s comical at times! Once, I was halfway through a three-hour road trip and started thinking I should stop. I made it all the way home without a problem, but couldn’t make it from my driveway to the restroom. I read up on Flomax, which appears to work for those who have trouble urinating. Are you aware of any over-thecounter medications for my situation? -- R.J.

One way to assess severity of prostate symptoms is using the AUA score, available at tinyurl.com/ BPHscore. Men who have a result of moderate or severe symptoms benefit from treatment.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT

5A Batavia City Broadway Mall Batavia Perry Hornell (585)344-0775 (585)237-2410 (607)324-3784

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health.According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.

There are several herbal treatments (such as saw palmetto, South African star grass, stinging nettle and Africatn plum) for an enlarged prostate with recurring symptoms. Some of my patients take them and feel like they are effective, but the evidence is not definitive. Supplements are not subject to the same standards of purity that prescription medications are. Consequently, I do not recommend these treatments. Tamsulosin (Flomax) and similar drugs are safe and well-tolerated for most men.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.

Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.

Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.

Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about Complimentbrushing.kidsafter positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.

Grandparents,Caregivers,Parents, and Caregivers of Infants

At Ages 1 and 2, LEAD TESTING is what to do!

My advice....learn about lead poisoning, take your infants (ages 1-2) for a lead screening at a health care o ce, and contact the Livingston County Department of Health if you have questions at 528-243-7299.

Are you concerned about your 1 and 2 year olds growing properly?

I am renting an older apartment. My doctor screened my baby and told me she had high lead levels and it was dangerous to her growth. I had no idea about lead and the risks to infants. I worked with the Livingston County Department of Health and my landlord and we are making changes.

Make sure to see your healthcare provider.

You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: Taking the stairs Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work Getting off the bus or subway one stop early Parking in the farthest space from the door Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

DID YOU KNOW?

Hunters and non-hunters alike are familiar with bright orange coats, hats, vests, and other gear that is worn during hunting season. Even though it seems counterintuitive to wear “blaze orange” in the fields or woods for fear that animals may spot you, hunters need not worry so much. Deer typically cannot recognize blaze orange attire designed to make hunters visible to other people. According to researchers at the University of Georgia, a combination of factors make deer less likely to be startled by blaze orange. Deer have less binocular overlap than humans. Binocular overlap (the area that both eyes view at the same time) allows focus on a single point and enables depth perception. Deer must shift their heads much more than humans to gain a good threedimensional perspective of an object. Deer also have fewer cones in their retinas compared to humans. Cones are photoreceptors that enable color vision and distinguish fine details. Furthermore, deer cannot readily perceive longer wavelengths of color, so oranges and reds appear more like brown or gray to them. However, deer can see blue colors more easily, so hunters may want to avoid blue jeans paired with their orange gear.

Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an e ort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased.

Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative Customerreview.happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services.Happy

I tried it out, clicking that I have butter, milk, onion, ground beef and rice. e result came back that I could make a potential 521 recipes. Some of them actually sounded pretty good. When I swapped the ground beef for bacon, it was even better. A little suggestion note at the top of the screen said that if I had certain other ingredients on hand, I could nd an additional 51 recipes.

I learned of a neighborhood group, six seniors, who are trying to keep themselves fed against all odds. ey’ve come up with a brilliant plan: At the end of each week they pool whatever foods they have le over and have dinner together. ey split the le overs to take home.

Another website, My Fridge Food (myfridgefood.com), o ers the same thing, although on a more limited basis. ere’s even a phone app, and when you click on a recipe it tells you the cooking time, calories and serving size of each recipe.

An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.

DEAR JULIE: Sadly, it o en can be di cult to tell when a guinea pig is getting ill. ey’re very good at hiding signs of illness, and often they are acutely ill before their owners can tell what’s wrong. It’s clear that you pay close attention to your guinea pigs, as you were aware of Dale’s weight and normal behavior. However, guinea pigs can become ill very quickly. You were right to contact the veterinarian immediately a er noticing Dale’s strange behavior, which I agree, could have been a sign of a stroke or heart attack.

I’ll refer to the late Peter Gurney’s brilliant Guinea Pig Health Guide. One suggestion, which you may be able to apply to your surviving guinea pigs, is to have the vet listen to their heartbeat. A heart murmur can indicate valve problems. Another possibility is an undetected fungal or bacterial infection that got into Dale’s system, eventually causing a heart attack. But as you pointed out, he showed no external signs of illness.Forthis mystery, I’ll turn to my readers. Any suggestions for Julie on monitoring her two surviving cavies?Sendyour tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. (c)com.2022 King Features Synd., Inc. DID YOU KNOW? Being overweight or obese is a serious medical condition that can affect people of all ages.Carrying around too many pounds can be especially problematic for children because it may put them on the path to health problems that once generally only affected adults. Such issues include diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic advises that childhood obesity can contribute to poor self-esteem and depression. Fortunately, improving kids’ eating habits, such as ensuring kids eat nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, and increasing physical activity are two ways to help kids maintain healthy weights.Parents who have concerns about their children’s weight should consult with a pediatrician, who may recommend a body mass index test.

No one can be expected to know everything. Even the wisest of people have areas of ignorance. But, being wise, they recognize that there is no shame in ignorance. They ask, they learn and thereby become even wiser. Only the fool merely wonders while pretending to know.

It is curious but true that most of us have a natural reluctance to ask for clarification or for more explanation when we fail to understand something. Perhaps it is because asking is an admission that we do not know.

* Make your own bed buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that’s knee high, and fill it about two-thirds with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it’s nice and loose. Once it’s secure, you can stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Numerous studies have found that vacationing produces a host of health benefits. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took.
