HOW PARENTS CAN SIMPLIFY STUDENTS’ TRANSITION TO COLLEGE LIFE
Arts & Entertainment ____________________13 Auctions & Antiques _____________________11 The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms.

Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.

I need a home
Hello, I’m Loki! This is a picture of me hooked up because I ran away from mom. I love to be outside but not hooked up. I’m a cuddle bug and love to jump on mom’s bed and on the couch. I am a treat monster and my favorite toy to play with is Mr. Bear. I am a 15-week-old golden doodle husky mix and I weigh 22 pounds already. I’m growing up fast!
Asher and Oakley are two 5 month old brothers who love to play.

For those worried about a pet getting lost and running away, cats may be preferential companions. That’s because cats have an ingrained ability to find their way home known as “psi-traveling.” Experts think that cats use the angle of the sun or magnetized cells in their brains to act as internal global positioning systems.

(NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated.

Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. Taking the next step The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. To learn more about the comprehensive benefits and features, call 1-800-LTC-FEDS (1-800-582-3337) TTY 1-800-843-3557 or visit LTCFEDS.com. REAL ESTATE

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

Rock Complaint Really, complaining about painted rocks. What a privileged life you must lead if this is the major concern in your life. They are just painted rocks; move on.
S E V RA Finicky bird Several weeks ago, a little bird, a house wren, began building a nest in the Penny Saver delivery tube. She made a considerable pile of small twigs, filling the tube about 1/2 full. So, I contacted the carriers for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, all of whom cooperated and used different delivery tubes. But after all the commotion, that little bird never laid a single egg! She had worked so hard, but it wasn’t a very good spot for a nest. Anyway, thanks to the various carriers! We all tried to help, but apparently the little wren didn’t like the location she chose after all. - Sincerely, a bird watcher Thank you, farmers! Thank you to Merrimac Farms, Livingston County Farm Bureau, and all the farmers & volunteers for the well organized Farm Fest on Saturday, September 11, 2021. It was a great family event, very educational & entertaining for all. We are very lucky to have so many devoted farm families in Livingston County. Thanks so much because without farmers we would be hungry & thirsty. May all your days be blessed & know you are appreciated. Thanks! Can’t thank you enough! The Elba Betterment Committee would like to thank everyone, not only in Elba, but also in our surrounding communities for the outpouring of support for our summer concert series - EBC Music and More 2.0. The musicians - who helped us navigate through the staging and presentation - were just phenomenal! The vendors - providing food and beverages with friendly and professional service; Christine White, for your patience and expertise with the advertising; GO Art! for the opportunity to present this amazing series to our community; and the Village of Elba for letting us use our beautiful park free of charge. So many people commented on what a wonderful place it is. And of course, thank you to all of the people who came out to the festivals - even in the pouring rain - we cannot say enough about your loyalty, support, positive comments and smiling faces! We hope to see you again next year!
Social Security not a perk I am a 73-year-old single lady by circumstance. My Social Security takes up most of my mortgage. I have to work in order to make a car payment, pay utilities, insurance, gas, medication, etc. Food is at the bottom of the list. I will continue to work because I have to, like so many others. Social Security was taken out of my pay weekly since I was 18 years old. I would say that 55 years worth of deductions belongs to me and to everyone who reaches the age to collect SSI regardless if they work or not. I’m fortunate that I am able to work 30 hours a week, but who knows what the future will bring. Social Security is not a perk for older workers; it belongs to us senior citizens! Social Security not doubled response Are you suggesting that a company is some magical floating entity that exists to pay bills and taxes and offer “perks” to the owner? Who do you think works seven days a week, 365 days a year, with no benefits, no healthcare, no pension, no paid days off, no dental? Who pays self-employment tax? Whose personal bank account do all taxes come out of, including both the company’s and the owner’s share of Social Security? The “company” does not pay for these things. Try running your own business before “educating” others on what they do and do not pay.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * According to Hasbro, the tallest Jenga tower ever was 40 levels, plus two additional blocks on top.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you need to pick up small shards of glass, use a cotton ball that’s been moistened, or a slice of white bread (insides only) wadded up. * Glass and chrome will shine if you clean them with newspaper. You can mist the paper with water first, but not too much. Rub ... and the shine comes right out, plus no streaks or lint! * “Use purified water in your coffeemaker to lengthen its life. Water deposits build up and affect both the flavor and function of your machine. They can be cleaned, but it’s much better if you use purified drinking water from a jug. It makes it very easy to fill the machine, too.” -- M.E. in Wyoming * “Purchase colorful laundry baskets for each child in your home. In the evening, you can have the child find all his or her stray items, put them in the basket and then put them away. In our house, the kids also use their basket to hold anything they need for school the next day -- backpack, coats and outerwear, even boots. We stack the baskets by the door, and nothing gets left behind.” -P.W. in Missouri * When you are frying up ground beef, add a tablespoon or two of water. It will help the excess grease to pull away from the meat, making it easier to drain off. * “To speed the healing of bruises, try eating pineapple. Drink lots of water, too. I play contact sports, and this has always helped me.” -- R.E. in Missouri GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Is there an app that can help me identify plants in my garden if I don’t know what they are? Apps have progressed quite a bit in a short period of time! Some of my favorite apps are: PictureThis, PlantSnap, and SoilWeb. Once your app has provided your requested information, use internet resources including Google Images to verify the response you receive. Plants are often

Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking.
607-329-2578 • www.mjcontractingwesternny.com
While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Brewer’s Yeast and Pet Allergies DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read an article that says brewer’s yeast is safe for cats and dogs. I disagree. I found several more articles online that say pets can be allergic to brewer’s yeast. What do you say about that? -- Carla L, via email DEAR CARLA: Pet owners should always research and evaluate the risks of any supplement for their pets. Brewer’s yeast is a mainstay for owners trying to find a natural flea control treatment, and others swear that its blend of B vitamins makes their pets healthier. It has been found that brewer’s yeast created for humans often contains ingredients like garlic and onions that are downright toxic to pets. Owners should purchase only brewer’s yeast formulated for dogs or cats, as PetMD notes (www.petmd. com/dog/nutrition/brewers-yeast-dogs-understanding-benefits-and-risks). Here are some other tips for picking the right brewer’s yeast: -- Give only the amount recommended for your pet’s size. -- Brewer’s yeast that has been “de-bittered” lacks chromium, a mineral that helps regulate blood sugar in humans but hasn’t been studied in dogs. -- Read the label carefully: Some brewer’s yeast for pets contains garlic, which can be toxic, especially for smaller pets. -- Consider a brewer’s yeast that includes omega-3 oils for added benefits. -- This supplement can add up to 80 calories to your pet’s meal. It can also cause excess gas. Some pets really are allergic to the yeast itself, though. Avoid giving brewer’s yeast to dogs with known yeast allergy, who have digestive illnesses like colitis, or who are immunocompromised. Always monitor your pet for new behaviors or symptoms after giving them any new supplement.

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

585-739-1707 OTHER CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Clip-n-Save
Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.
Tune-up Specials
Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

According to data reported to U.S. News & World Report from 711 ranked private universities (“ranked” schools meet certain criteria established by U.S. News & World Report), the average tuition and fees for private universities during the 2015-2016 school year was $32,599. Among the schools that reported their figures to U.S. News & Report, Vassar College in New York charged the most at $51,300, narrowly exceeding another school in the Empire State, Sarah Lawrence College, which charged its students $51,034 for the 2015-2016 school year. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Berea College in Kentucky charged just $870 in tuition and fees during the 2015-2016 school year. But that extraordinarily low tuition is somewhat misleading, as Berea College provides every admitted student the equivalent of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. American college students might be surprised to learn that the burden of college tuition is perhaps not as burdensome for students born overseas. For example, the most expensive university in England, the University of Cambridge, will charge its domestic and European Union students the maximum tuition fees allowed for the 2016-2017 school year. That translates to £9,000, or just more than $13,000, for one of the world’s most highly regarded institutions.

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Tigers, jaguars and leopards love the smell of Calvin Klein’s “Obsession For Men”! Photographers who used the fragrance to lure the big cats to their cameras in the wild said the cats “would start drooling, their eyes would half-close, almost like they were going into a trance.” * Halloween is more Irish than St. Patrick’s Day. * Ever wonder how the dice game Yahtzee got its curious moniker? A wealthy Canadian couple invented the game as a way of entertaining friends on board their yacht. After it proved a hit, the couple consulted a toy maker who loved it, bought the rights, and changed the original name from the generic “Yacht game” to “Yahtzee.” * Barbie has been outfitted by over 70 well-known designers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Recreation Center Shuttered Again Well, that certainly didn’t last long. My town’s recreation center opened last week for indoor walking only -- no classes, no basketball, no anything else -- then shut down again just as quickly. It seemed like it would be safe: only a certain number allowed into the building at one time, no walking with a buddy, walking by yourself in one lane on the track, enter the building at your designated time and leave when your time is up. What could go wrong? What went wrong was the Mask Police. We’re supposed to be able to exercise without a mask. Except, cried the Mask Police, we would be exercising indoors. Indoors equals need for masks. I hear it was a very heated board meeting, with those on opposing sides quite vocal in presenting their cases. The anti-mask contingent was adamant that it was dangerous to ask us to mask up while exercising. The Mask Police insisted that COVID-positive people would be exhaling germs all over the rec center. They even brought charts and graphs. In the end, the rec center supervisor threw his hands in the air and declared the center closed for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, there’s a bright spot on the horizon for this winter. The local senior center is once again hosting the Senior Health Fair. The purpose of the annual event is to link seniors with resources in the area. Companies and providers sign up to showcase their wares and offerings, including housing, products aimed at seniors, fitness, legal help, the fire department, senior-living retirement communities, the YMCA, medical services, athome nurse visits and much more. This year, however, like last year, it will all be online. Each exhibitor will have videos and “live” online events that seniors can “visit” via computer. There will be entertainment, but unfortunately, no snack tables.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Estrogen Insert May Help With Bladder Problems
Dr. Randall Freeman 4806 Lakeville Road • Geneseo, NY • 585-447-9108 We accept Excellus BC/BS PPO, Cigna PPO, CSEA Employee Benefit Fund, and many more. Please check our website, geneseodental.com for the full list.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 83-year-old female with bladder problems. I get up two or three times a night and usually make it to the bathroom. I thought it would be good to see a doctor in case the problem got worse. An operation was mentioned, which I am not interested in, so they gave me a pessary, which has been good and bad. It is comfortable and I don’t have to use the bathroom as often, but now I don’t get bathroom warnings and don’t always make it to the bathroom. I also leak urine with coughs and sneezes, which didn’t happen before. Now the doctor wants me to use Imvexxy inserts. After reading the side effects, I’m not sure that’s a good thing to do. What are your thoughts: Is the Imvexxy necessary? The side effects really scare me. -- Anon. ANSWER: You have symptoms of both urge incontinence (the sensation of needing to get to the bathroom right away to avoid an accident) and stress incontinence (losing urine with abdominal pressure, such as cough or sneeze). It is possible that you have two separate problems. However, loss of estrogen can cause the lining of the vagina and vulva to thin. This includes the urethra, which provides conscious control over urinary flow. It needs estrogen to close optimally, and older women often have stress or urge incontinence (or both, which is called mixed) due to lack of estrogen. Imvexxy (estradiol) is a low-dose estrogen preparation inserted in the vagina, usually daily for two weeks then twice weekly thereafter. It is a very reasonable choice for women with symptoms of urge or stress incontinence and who have findings of estrogen loss on physical exam. The low dose makes side effects uncommon (in the initial trial of 764 women, there were no adverse effects that happened in women using estradiol at greater frequency than in the placebo group).
WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

“Life is mostly froth and bubble, but two things stand like stone…kindness in another’s trouble, courage in our own.” ~ A. L. Gordon
Trouble, unfortunately, is a commodity which never seems to be in short supply. It is when trouble hits that we can all deeply appreciate any kindnesses which may be offered to us. These kindnesses help immeasurably in taking the sting out of misfortune. We should look for and be quick to act upon opportunities to extend such kindness to others. We need courage to help us find a solution to our misfortune and in rebuilding with confidence in the future. Our kindness to others in their time of trial gives them the courage and determination to carry on. A beautiful funeral service provides comforting memories for the bereaved and eases the emotional adjustment to loss. Call us.

Your Centers of Dansville Expands to Meet Growing Need BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
M
any in her community know that friend and neighbor Tina Markle is a force to be reckoned with. Thankfully, she uses her powerful determination and drive for good. Markle, founder of Your Centers in Dansville, has not only reopened her popular center, but she has also launched a new free “store” and raised an incredible number of supplies for communities recently hit hard by local flooding. Your Centers Day Respite Program is located on Main Street in Dansville, and the business specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone, says Markle, adding that they serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Thanks to the effects of the pandemic, the center has been busy. “People feel free to come and spend the day with us,” she said. “They need a place to stay warm, especially with winter coming. Many in need of care do not have it at this time, so for now, they can enroll here for free.” It was in continuing to serve the community at Your Centers that Markle became aware of even greater need. “During COVID, when we served free meals, so many people needed help with basic necessities like clothing. I used to go and purchase some at our local Salvation Army store nearby, but then we lost it. So, I thought we would just start our own store in the back of where our program is, and we did. But when we reopened, we needed the space, so I moved it to my storage building next door.” Soon, the free store grew larger than Markle had ever imagined, drawing people in need from as far away as Hornell and Rochester. Though the need is truly great, the generosity of the local community is even greater, bringing in more donations than Markle had ever expected. So much so, in fact, that she is running out of room. “It has grown beyond belief!” she exclaimed. “We have men’s, women’s, children’s, and infant’s clothing, sneakers, linens, dishes, microwaves, cribs, walkers, strollers... so many things. We also have a lending closet for medical equipment such as hospital beds. I never in a million years thought it would turn into what it has.”
their time and resources to the center, the store, and flood relief. “Without volunteers and the community, this could not happen,” she said. “They are incredible!” Along with volunteers and the community, Tina Markle credits her mother for her service to others. “Last February, we lost my mom to COVID,” she Full shelves at Markle’s free store shared. “She is my strength welcome those in need! and the reason for all of this. Her name was Joann Cox, and she had a heart of gold. My dad passed away young, and she raised us five kids on her own until she remarried when I, the youngest, was about 15 or 16 years old.” Despite this hardship and the three jobs she worked to overcome it, Joann was always warm and generous. “My mom would give the shirt off her back to anybody. She was always baking cookies for people and visiting people in the nursing home. She was everybody’s mom in the neighborhood; kids would call her ‘mom.’ She took care of everybody. She would give her last dollar to people in need.” Inspired by her mother’s spirit and example, Tina Markle began taking care of those around her, as well, through Your Centers. Joann was more than happy to join her. “She just loved it,” shared Markle. “She started making the baked goods and making lap blankets, hats, booties, and afghans. My mom loved giving. She was a wonderful, wonderful, woman.” Markle now finds strength in her family and friends. “My daughter, Meghan, is here at the center every day, and my daughter-in-law is helping out, as well,” she said. “I am so thankful for the people who come in. Since I lost my mom, they have become like family to me. I keep going because I know they will be waiting. It helps to know what we do is making such a difference in people’s lives.”
It was not long after her free store began to thrive that the floods arrived, (l) and her daughter, severely impacting several nearby Joann Cox Tina Markle (r) communities. Markle knew she had to help. She decided to gather donations for those in flooded areas.
Visit Your Center on Facebook for upcoming events, including Markle’s Haunted Trail in Springwater!
“We had our volunteers put a Facebook post up,” she explained. “Donations began pouring in. Our community is amazing! Without them, this huge collection of supplies wouldn’t exist. We have totes of schools supplies, backpacks, socks, blankets, and all kinds of brand-new items – just thousands of dollars’ worth of stuff from the community.” She paused, still in awe. “We literally had to ask the community to pause because we didn’t have enough volunteers to get it all out to families in need!”
• Perinton Historical Society’s House Tours are Back...Virtually!
Markle and her fellow volunteers have been taking loads of supplies to as many groups and communities as possible, including flooded neighborhoods, impacted Amish communities, and Rochester’s homeless camp. She credits the selfless men and women who donate

Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
