1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done.

2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

OUR APPROACH

• Habitat for Humanity takes a community approach to provide a ordable housing for building new homes and renovating existing ones. Sweat equity is at the heart of this approach, where our homeowner partners provide labor that contributes to keeping the costs down and also o ers the community at large an opportunity to work with the homeowners.

• When a town has a number of active board members, it increases the visibility of Habitat in that town, which increases the likelihood of future projects there, as well as brings new, innovative ideas about how to realize those projects.

OUR IDEAL BOARD MEMBER

• As with any nonpro t board, Habitat seeks board members that can contribute in various ways.

• We have a need for board members with construction background or administrative experience, as we need both Construction Committee support and a future Secretary.

• Board member connections to donors, builders, and volunteers all help to facilitate the Habitat mission.

NEXT STEPS

• All potential board members are interviewed and their membership voted on by the existing Board.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

What’s Your Home’s Value?

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well. Inspect heating systems at the start of each new season. According to EnergyStar.gov, heating systems account for 29 percent of the average homeowner’s energy expenditures. Inspect your heating or HVAC system before the start of winter, making sure all gas or oil connections are operating properly. EnergyStar.gov notes that dirty burners and cracked heat exchangers can cause heating units to operate less efficiently and may even pose a safety risk. Inspect the air filter of the heating system at least once per month, as filters can quickly become dirty during a heavyuse season like winter. Dirty filters cause the system to work harder to keep a home warm, unnecessarily wasting energy as a result.

Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time.

Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption.

Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured typesthanabsorbmiso,soyconsumersHowever,won’tabsorption,presentofsoybeansWhileadmitsfoodstothere’ssoyprotein.TheUSSECalsonotessomeconfusioninregardtheconnectionbetweensoyandiron,thoughthegroupresearchisongoing.a1/2cupservingofcookedcontainsfourmilligramsiron,thephytateandsoyproteininsoyfoodsreduceironmeaningthatthebodyreallybenefitfromtheiron.theUSSECrecommendspurchasefermentedfoods,includingtempehandbecausethebodymightmoreironfromthesefoodsitwillwhenconsumingothersoyfoods.

Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.

HOW TO OVERCOME MENTAL FATIGUE

Spot the signs of mental fatigue. Another way to overcome mental fatigue is to learn to recognize its symptoms. Recognition of these symptoms allows individuals to use them as alarm bells that alert them when it’s time to take a step back and unwind. WebMD notes that mental fatigue symptoms include mood-related issues like increased irritability or anger; difficulty concentrating that makes it hard to finish tasks; zoning out; difficulty sleeping; and engaging in unhealthy behaviors, including overconsumption of alcohol.

PAW’S CORNER

Building a Pet First-Aid Kit

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read in a guide about cutting dogs’ toenails that styptic will stop bleeding if you cut their paws. What is that, and where do I get it? -- Perry in Dallas

DEAR PERRY: Styptic powder can be used on small nicks and tiny cuts to stop bleeding and reduce pain. at’s helpful when trimming pets’ toenails, which can be a traumatic experience for them, especially if you should trim a little too far up the nail and accidentally cut the quick. e powder is applied with a cotton ball or so cloth. Most owners keep it right next to them as they trim their pets’ nails, so it can be applied immediately.

In fact, styptic powder should be an essential part of something every pet owner has: an easy-toaccess rst-aid kit for their pets. You don’t have to buy a complete kit; you can assemble a few key items and store them in a tightly sealed plastic container.

In addition to the powder, a pet rst-aid kit should have gauze and tape, a small bar of soap, a disinfectant like hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes, Benadryl (plain, with no ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cotton balls and disinfecting hand wash (for you). Its main purpose is to treat small cuts and scrapes, but you can add other items that you think are essential, including the veterinarian’s phone number, extra identi cation tags, copies of your pet’s shot records and a spare leash. More ideas can be found at the Humane Society of the United States’ website.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Hiatal Hernia Is Not Correlated to Asthma Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, still work full-time and have generally good health, except for adult-onset asthma. Advair 250/50 was prescribed for me over 10 years ago, and I’ve been taking it regularly each morning, thoroughly rinsing each time to prevent thrush. About five years ago, I developed an abdominal hernia just below my waistline. My primary physician referred me to a general surgeon, who did a very thorough exam, including an MRI from the jaw down. He discovered an esophageal hernia in addition to the abdominal hernia, and told me that a specialist would have to perform the double surgery. His advice was to avoid surgery, leaving it as a last resort. He prescribed famotidine twice daily to preclude acid reflux. That generally works, but not always.

My question is, does Advair 250/50 cause or contribute to an esophageal hernia? -- D.A.A.

ANSWER: A hiatal hernia (“hiatus” means “gap” in Latin), also called an esophageal or paraoesophageal hernia, is when the hole in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes is larger than normal, so other abdominal organs, especially the stomach, can slide through the hole from the abdomen into the Mostchest.hiatal

hernias are thought to be congenital, meaning you were born with the propensity to have a larger-than-needed hole in the diaphragm. Most people with this condition have no symptoms and do not need treatment. The unusual person with symptoms from a sliding hiatal hernia is usually treated medically. Like you, they are prescribed famotidine, which reduces stomach acid. In the rare case when the paraoesophageal hernia is so large that the stomach gets stuck inside the chest, or when other abdominal organs enter the chest, a person may require surgery.

Neither asthma nor Advair, a combination of an inhaled steroid (fluticasone) and a long-acting beta agonist (salmeterol), is related to hiatal hernias.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES

Periostitis: Periostitis is commonly known as “shin splints.” This is an overuse injury that occurs in athletes who are engaged in activities that involve rapid deceleration. Periostitis causes inflammation of the band of tissue that surrounds bones known as the periosteum, and typically affects people who repetitively jump, run or lift heavy weights. To head off potential pain in the shins, young athletes can gradually build up their tolerance for physical activity. Supportive shoes or orthotic inserts may also help. Incorporating cross-training into a regimen also can work.

SENIOR NEWS

By Matilda Charles Scammers and the Omicron Vaccine

e latest scam against seniors appears to have started the very day the new Covid omicron vaccine was announced as being approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

e call I received promised to help me get to the front of the line ... ahead of all the people who were going to be eligible at the same time. All I had to do was provide my banking information or Medicare card number so they could “hold a place” for me in the appointments.

A er all, the scammer said, millions of people were going to be rushing to get the vaccine. I didn’t want to be le out, did I?

I had a few minutes, so I decided to test the scammer’s actual knowledge about the vaccine. He was fuzzy on the information and stumbled to answer, sometimes making it up as he went.

Here are some facts to remember should you get one of these vaccine scam

ecalls:truth is that not everyone is going to be eligible. ose who haven’t had any previous Covid vaccines cannot get the omicron vaccine until they take the other ones. en you have to wait two months before getting the new one.

e P zer booster will be for those age 12 and over, with the Moderna for those 18 and up. ey don’t know yet about children younger than those ages.

No, at this point there haven’t been any clinical trials about how well the omicron version works. Mice, yes, but people, no. (Moderna and P zer both did mini-tests of 600 people each.)

e omicron vaccine will cover not only the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, but also the original Covid as well. It’s called a “bivalent” vaccine because it covers both.

But the big thing to remember: ese scammers don’t want to help you get the new omicron booster. ey only want your personal information.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

No business is too small to be a small business. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that microbusinesses, which are defined as firms that employ between one and nine employees, accounted for 75 percent of all private-sector employers as recently as 2013.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS

(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.

One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.

RAVES

A Big Thank You!

A big thanks to the team at The "Original" Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford for serving a delicious lunch to our members this past Friday in celebration of our awesome staff and the retirement of one of our coworkers. Tender roast beef and juicy chicken sandwiches were accompanied by generous servings of scratch-made pasta salad and potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and cheerfully served with a good time had by all. Thank you!

Very Happy

I would truly like to thank the people that have been working on Route 63 and our town of Dansville. They are doing a wonderful job. It is hot and dirty work, but it has been long overdue. Again, thank you all!

Forever Grateful

On August 24th, I choked on food while eating lunch and lost my breath. I managed to call 911, and the gentleman operator stayed on the line with me, calming and reassuring me, until the EMT Team from Fishers Fire Company arrived at my home. The scare was unbelievably frightening and traumatic. The EMT Team was extremely professional and very kind. Thankfully, my emergency had a happy ending. We are so very fortunate to have these two agencies in our community. I am forever indebted to to them.

Shoutout to NYSDOT

A huge shoutout to the NYSDOT on Union Street in Spencerport for grinding down a gigantic bump in front of our house that caused empty tractor trailers to make the sound of a bomb going off in our neighborhood! Now we won't be awakened in the middle of the day or night! Thank You! David T. - Churchville

Dress Code

My husband took our car to have its free annual undercoat checkup. As always, the manger asked if he would like to have any other services done to the car as well, such as detailing, cleaning, etc. My husband replied, “No thank you, just the undercoat checked.” The manager said to my husband, “I didn’t think you would by the way you are dressed!” This was said to my hardworking husband because he had on his blue-collar work clothes. Other rude comments were made about the age of our vehicle. I didn’t know you had to wear a suit and tie to get respect [there]. I find this incident unprofessional, inappropriate, and disrespectful! Someone has to do the dirty work. By the way, my husband cleans up well!

Country Roads

To whomever ranted about their road: I used to live on a country road, and almost every year, they would grade the road because of potholes, then roll it. Then, when it rained, the road was a mud hole. Why can’t it be fixed correctly? People pay enough in taxes to keep them maintained. It isn’t a long road.

Volume on High

Has anyone besides my wife and I noticed that the volume at concerts and movie theaters has become so loud that ithey are unpleasant to attend? The movie we went to see was so loud that, even with earplugs, my wife was forced to leave the theater. And when did the bass become a solo instrument? I went to the concert to hear the star, not the bass. Sound mixers as a group must be deaf from attending too many concerts.

Lilies

The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING

Look for a new job or fresh income streams.A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

Weed whack plant as close to the ground as possible. Install cardboard or heavy construction paper over the area, overlapping by 4-6”. Be sure to cover all the area. If the bed is next to a structure, be sure the paper goes up on the structure 3”. Then install 3” to 4” of hardwood mulch. Be sure not to move the paper and that you have it covered by that depth. This is the most effect way that I have used to get unwanted plants

I have a small raised tomato garden. The tomatoes are good. The problem is that something is making small holes after the tomato is ripe. We ruled out deer. We sprayed with a powder. It only happens during the night. We never saw any bugs, etc.Any ideas..?

It is hard to know for certain, but my thought is Tomato pinworm: young yellowish-gray larva only a few

millimeters long make blotch mines in leaves; older yellow, green, or gray, purple-spotted larva up to 8 mm long fold leaves and web them together or bore into stems, buds, and fruit; leaving fruits with pinholes and discolored blotches. It is also possible that it is something else that might not typically feed on tomatoes, too. Your vigilant observation and inspection of the fruit might find more evidence which may be helpful.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Continue to be loyal: A recent study from researchers at the Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. That highlights just how valuable repeat customers are to small businesses. Consumers who have had positive experiences with small businesses in their communities in the past can continue to support those companies by looking to them first when they need new products or services. Doing so not only helps small businesses retain more customers, but it increases the likelihood that consumers will again have positive buying experiences.

...I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house. So I have spent almost all the daylight hours in the open air.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL

Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. * “I make presents pretty by cutting leftover gift wrap into quarter-inch strips, curling them and attaching them to the gift. The more the better. It’s attractive and makes an impression.”

-- M.F. in Washington

* “I love to have sauteed, sliced mushrooms, and I use my egg slicer to get perfect slices. It’s very handy and much easier to use than doing it with a knife.”

-- K.P. in Arizona

* To make your own ammoniabased pretreatment for laundry stains, mix together equal parts water, liquid detergent and ammonia in a spray bottle. Never use with bleach.

* You can use a soft cloth dampened with vinegar to clean greasy stains off of suede shoes. This also works on patent leather.

* “To clean plastic, vented hairbrushes, stick them in the dishwasher. You also can put toothbrushes in the dishwasher periodically.”

-- E.L. in Michigan

“If you or your child has a wood splinter, soak the finger/toe in icy water. The water swells the wood, making it easier to remove, while the iciness numbs the area, making it less painful.” -- R.D. in Oregon
