Before the pumpkin spiced latte took over, the American fall was marked by hot ciders and other spicy beverages.

Nothing speaks comfort like fall, and nothing speaks fall like wrapping our hands around a warm beverage. As the temperature drops and days become shorter, lay cozily on the couch, turn on the T.V., and let the powerful scent of apple, nutmeg, and cinnamon fill your home — it’s time to celebrate National Hot Mulled Cider Day. While most are acquainted with mulled ciders, on September 30 we bump it up a notch and mull it with spices, cinnamon, cloves, orange peels, and nutmeg to celebrate the arrival of fall.

Fall décor

Since it’s smelling like fall it needs to look like fall!

As the cider brews in the kitchen, replace the summer décor with fall pumpkins, gourds and fall scented candles.

Thank you to my “garbage plate” angel

I am a female senior citizen with poor hand movement due to arthritis. My foolish self thought I could handle carrying my huge garbage plate takeout container from the restaurant to my car. However I was not able to park in a handicapped spot and so on the way to my further away space, I dropped the whole container! Luckily not much fell out and a very kind gentleman was in the parking lot to help me pick it up. He also noted that my plate hadn’t come with diced raw onion. “That’s integral to a plate,” he said. So true! Luckily he had some diced onion leftover from his plate he donated to mine. I deeply enjoyed this meal. Thanks to that parking lot angel and I will pay it forward!

Stopped Traffic!

Thank you to everyone who stopped their cars on Veteran’s Memorial and to everyone who helped me catch my dog after he slipped his harness! I cannot express how relieved I am that he is safe and sound, and the recipient of a new, better fitting harness!

Inconsiderate dog owners

Please, dog owners (not all by any means, but many of you), leash your dogs! Just because you love your dog like a child doesn’t mean that I do. We are fortunate enough to have many terrific walking and hiking trails in the area. Nothing ruins a morning jog or an evening stroll like an untrained dog barreling towards you as the owner says “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Guess what? I don’t care! It is about time for legal enforcement of the signs stating the fines for unleashed dogs!

Local elections

Am I the only one who’s already sick of the commercials, flyers, and in person discussions of anyone who spends more time attacking their opponents and less time saying what they will do for us?

Overuse of perfume/cologne

Attention aids, nurses, people in the medical field, home health aids or visitors to the hospitals, senior apartments or nursing homes. Overuse of perfume/ cologne that lingers in the hallways makes many elderly people ill. Please consider the necessity of having to wear it in these places. It affects people with asthma, COPD, and many other illnesses. Respect their living space. It would be so much appreciated.

Plan a day to shop local fairs, shops & stands

Crafts, jewelry and décor: Include a trip to a craft fair, where local vendors come together to display and sell their wares, on your weekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, which can be tucked away for giving later in the year.

Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling town squares or closed-off city centers, and you may find some handfashioned jewelry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

Preserving Native Bulbs

New times bring new technological devices, new generations, new lifestyles, and gardening is not the exception. We crave the new and different and therefore better.Really? This recalls many gardeners attracted to the new hybrids: the latest color, size, and number of blooms in different vegetables, flowers, and fruits.

Personally, I admire the heirlooms, those plants that were grown in our gardens for centuries, loved and appreciated, and passed down through the generations. So, here it

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

is, late September, the time to plant those charming, trouble-free, longlasting, and self-proliferating spring bulbs. Many of them have been with us for a very long time, such as:

•OrnithogalumUmbellatum, known toallastheStarofBethlehem, iseasy to grow, and sometimes strays, in gardens since 1593!

• Scilla siberica,or Siberian squill,as its name implies, survives a negative 40 degrees Farenheight and carpets dapple shade in a flush of blue in April through May.

• Another blue charmer, Chionodoxa, known as Glory of the Snow, arrived 100 years later in 1788.

• Muscari or grape hyacinths showed up around the same time.

• Mount Hood daffodil, 16-18 inches high, blooms pale-yellow and fades to ivory.

Enjoy these old-timers and keep history alive!

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.

Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

DID YOU KNOW? The exact causes of many headaches continues to confound medical researchers. Though the Cleveland Clinic notes that certain environmental factors, such as exposure to allergens or strong odors from household chemicals, can trigger headaches, the mechanism that causes muscles or blood vessels to swell or tighten remains something of a mystery. During a headache, the mysterious mechanism activates specific nerves that affect muscles and blood vessels, and these nerves then send pain signals to the brain. Harvard Medical School notes that tissues that surround the brain and some major nerves in the brain also can signal pain. HMS also reports that while there are more than 300 types of headaches, only about 10 percent of them have an identifiable cause. And what triggers a headache in one person will not necessarily do so in another. However, HMS notes that people who suffer from migraines, an especially severe type of headache that can increase a person’s risk of heart attack, tend to remain sensitive to the same triggers. That’s good news, as it means that people who can identify their headache triggers can then take steps to avoid those triggers in the future in the hopes of reducing the frequency of their headaches.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap.

As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

Cats get allergies too!

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

I look forward to seeing you at my new Geneseo office location!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Tushy, sneezes several times a day, and her eyes water almost nonstop. is has been happening for a couple of weeks. She didn’t seem to have this issue before. My local veterinarian’s office is booked up for another two months, so I’m not sure what I can do in the meantime. Can you help?

DEAR HARRIET: It sounds like your cat is suffering from an allergy to something in her environment. at could be airborne irritants like pollen, dust or molds. Or, it could be a reaction to something in her food.

You can try to figure out what’s causing her reaction in a couple of ways.

First, dust and clean your home thoroughly, and consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room that Tushy spends the most time in. Next, try a different brand of pet food for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference. Some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients in pet foods, and because those ingredients vary from brand to brand, it’s difficult to figure out which one is causing the allergy.

When Tushy is able to see the veterinarian, bring along your notes about her symptoms and what effect, if any, the environmental and dietary changes above had on improving her condition. e vet can offer additional treatment and support, such as adding essential fatty acids to her diet or prescribing a steroid to help with her symptoms.

In the meantime, monitor Tushy’s symptoms closely. If they suddenly get much worse, or if she becomes lethargic, vomits frequently or shows other signs of serious illness, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.

• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.

• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.

• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.

• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.

• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.

• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.ThoughtheDHHSsuggestionsaretheminimumrecommendations, goingtoo far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

DID YOU KNOW?

Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain?

Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

How to Best Utilize Compression Stockings

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address how to use compression socks? I sit most of the day, so wearing the socks helps my legs to feel less heavy and tired by the end of the day. Are there people who should not wear them? And what about wearing them during exercise?

ANSWER: Compression stockings are most commonly used in people with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in middle-aged to older people. The major symptom is swelling in the feet and lower legs. The swelling is usually minimal or gone in the morning and gets worse during the day, especially with prolonged standing and even sitting.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE

Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs.

The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

The underlying problem is that the veins, which carry blood from the legs back to the heart, get leaky over decades, and the fluid accumulates in the legs under the force of gravity. Your doctor can prescribe the right size, length and strength of stocking based on your personal condition. The fact that you feel better with compression stockings suggests that you might have venous insufficiency, but it’s still a good idea to ask your doctor about them. Compression stockings are pretty safe, but should not be worn by people with serious reduction in arterial blood flow to the legs.

Arterial disease is completely different from venous insufficiency. It’s caused by blockages in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the legs. An expert, such as a vascular surgeon, is an appropriate consultant for a person with arterial insufficiency before they consider using compression stockings.

Unless you have moderate to severe arterial disease (in which case you should check with your doctor if you aren’t sure), there is no harm from wearing compression stockings during exercise. There may even be some benefit. Compression stockings should not be worn by those with an acute clot in a major leg vein (a deep venous thrombosis). Once the clot is stabilized for a few days with medication, compression stockings can help treat and even prevent swelling in the affected leg.

People with moderate to severe heart failure should exercise care before using compression stockings, which put the leaked-out fluid back into the circulation and can worsen heart failure. Again, this is an issue to discuss with your regular doctor or cardiologist prior to using compression stockings on your own.

Finally, severe venous insufficiency can cause breakdown in the skin. A person with ulcers or open wounds, or with any kind of acute infection, should be evaluated and treated prior to using compression stockings. A wound care nurse is an ideal consultant in this case.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

* In March 2019, the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans celebrated its 125th anniversary by offering a free seven-night stay in the presidential suite, along with complimentary private dinners and spa treatments worth $15,000. But this wasn’t your everyday giveaway -- the prize was only available to the person who returned the “most outrageous” item ever stolen from the hotel!

Hundred Acre Nature Park: A Sanctuary for Native Habitats and Community Connection

NestledalongtheserenebanksoftheGeneseeRiver, justa mile long, lies the Hundred Acre Nature Park, a hidden gem of old-growth forest and meticulously cultivated native habitats. Located in Rush, New York, a mere nine miles from the bustling city of Rochester and adjacent to Henrietta, this 100-acre parcel of land, deeded for park and recreation, was generously given to the town of Rush in 2010.

is oasis, with its address at 250 Rush-Scottsville Rd. (also known as Rt 251), is situated to the west of the State School of Industry and shares its borders with the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. e park, with its rich biodiversity and enchanting landscapes, beckons all nature enthusiasts to come and partake in its wonders.

Under the stewardship of the Rush Recreation and Park Association, thislandhasbeen nurtured and transformed over the past five years. e association, passionate about preserving and showcasing the natural beauty of Hundred Acre Nature Park, has worked tirelessly to bring its story to the public. rough community engagement and the help of dedicated volunteers, including Boy Scouts, and the invaluable assistance of farmer Bruce Howlett, the park has witnessed the planting of 253 native trees and shrubs, aswellasthecultivationoffiveacresofnativepollinators comprising 27 distinct species crucial to the ecological balance.

e park’s dedication ceremony on September 30 marks an important milestone in the history of Hundred Acre Nature Park. Visitors will enjoy guided nature walks, gator tours of the land, as well as refreshments and raffles, all creating a sense of community among nature lovers of all ages.

e vision of the Rush Recreation and Park Association extends beyond the immediate landscape.

Janet Chaize, Vice President of the RRPA, says the organization’s mission is to create a thriving habitat that supports declining native populations. By planting native trees, bushes, wildflowers, and grasses, theynotonlyprovidesustenanceandsanctuaryforbirds andpollinatorsbutalsoofferaninvaluableeducationalresource. Visitorstotheparkcanwitnessfirsthandtheinterconnectedness of our food system and the vital role of pollination.

Comprising 52 acres of forest, Hundred Acre Nature Park boasts areas of old-growth woodland, a rare find in modern

times. During a visit to the park, Tom Whitlow of Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science marveled at the undisturbed vernal pools, a feature in decline across the state. Trails meander along the Genesee River, offering picturesque outlooks with inviting benches, while mowed paths wind through the habitats under restoration.

e remaining 48 acres of the park bear the imprints of a farming history. rough meticulous planning and dedication, these acres are being transformed into a food forest for wildlife, with the planting of native trees, shrubs, and perennial pollinators.

As the park is a labor of love, it relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors. A grant from the USDA Forest Service in partnership with Monroe County Soil and Waterhasbeensecuredforthe planting of 480 native trees, slated to begin in the spring of 2024. However, the journey of Hundred Acre Nature Park is far from over, and every contribution, be it in time, effort, or resources, is invaluable. e association warmly welcomes all those willing to extend a helping hand.

To get involved, reach out via email at rush.ny.rpa@gmail. com or give them a call at 585-360-6651. e park is open most weekends in October, and some weekdays, offering many opportunities for you to connect with nature and be a part of this remarkable endeavor.

In the heart of Rush, New York, the Hundred Acre Nature Park stands as a testament to the potential of community-driven conservation. It is a sanctuary, an educational beacon, and a testament to the power of collective action in preserving the natural world. Come, be a part of this transformative journey, and let the magic of Hundred Acre Nature Park inspire and upli you. For more information, visit rushrpa.org.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS

New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible.

First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

* A centuries-old Japanese tradition holds that if a sumo wrestler can make your baby cry, the baby will live a healthy life! During a special ceremony, parents hand their infants to wrestlers who not only bounce the babies up and down but sometimes even roar in their faces to start the waterworks. As one mom, Mae Shige, remarked of her son at a 2014 event: “He’s not a baby that cries much, but today he cried a lot for us and we are very happy about it.”

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS

Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

Hope, which springs eternal in the human breast, is most essential to us all. No one’s life is perfect, but we can all hope for improvement. The most wretched, destitute beggar in the world can carry on only if there is hope… perhaps only hope that a crust of bread can be obtained to sustain life.

Those who enjoy good health have reason to be hopeful. Their good health should permit them to work effectively toward the achievement of whatever they hope for. Good health is more precious than gold; it is the basis for hope, and hope is everything.

We hope that you will ask us to explain the advantages of pre-need planning of funeral services. Phone us for an appointment, without any obligation.

Jay T. Kiefer

September 22, 2023

Jay passed away Friday, September 22, 2023 in Vero Beach, Florida, surrounded by his family, after battling cancer. He was 51.Jay leaves behind his long-time girlfriend, Mary iele. He is also survived by his dad and closest friend, Ron Kiefer and stepmom, Sue, of Livonia; his son, Tim Kiefer, daughterin-law, Elizabeth and granddaughter, Charlotte, of Virginia; his sister, Dawn and brother-in-law, Michael Petroziello, also of Virginia; and his stepsister, Molly Meagher, of Livonia. He is also survived by his very special aunt Karin & uncle Larry of Livonia, along with several aunts, uncles, and many cousins. He is survived by his mother, Kathie Henderson, of Florida. Jay also leaves behind a whole tribe of good, life-long and faithful friends from Livonia.

Jay loved his family and his many friends. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golf, fishing and especially deer hunting season. He was an excellent marksman and bowhunter with lots of trophies to show for it. e Green Bay Packers - “Go Pack!” - were his football team. Jay was also a craftsman who was meticulous in his workmanship, whether it was installing wood flooring, painting, or plumbing, he was a “get ‘er done” kind of guy and all those skills came naturally to him.

To remember Jay and to celebrate his life the family is planning a Life Celebration event, the details of which will be shared as the event draws near.

In the meanwhile, we don’t say goodbye, Jay, because until we see you on the other side, we’ll carry you in our hearts.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows.

The Problem

The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone.

An Answer

Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,”explainedDarrellSmith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER

The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.

According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function.Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls.Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned.Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018.That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

DID YOU KNOW?

Before saying “so long” to yard work at the end of autumn, homeowners should remove thatch from their lawns. Thatch is dead grass that’s often identifiable by its yellowish tint, and this dead grass, if left to loom in the lawn over the winter, can block air and moisture from making its way into the soil. That can make it difficult for a lawn to recover come the spring and may even cost homeowners a substantial amount of money to address when winter finally skips town. When removing thatch, resist the temptation to rake with lots of physical force, as raking too hard can harm the lawn. Instead, commit to three or four easy passes with the rake, as this will collect the thatch without damaging the lawn. Many people rent a dethatcher from a nearby lawn and garden supply store, and such a device can make the process of removing thatch much easier.

However, be sure to clean the machine before using it on your lawn, as there is no way of telling what condition the previous renter’s lawn was in when heor she used the device. Failing to clean the dethatcher can spread disease from a previous renter’s lawn onto your own, and that can prove another costly mistake come the spring when your lawn is looking to rebound. If seeding the lawn in early fall, which can be a great time to reseed, remove the thatch before laying down any new seed. If you wait to remove thatch until after you have laid down new seed, then the lawn likely won’t benefit from the seed and you will likely just rake the new seed away when it comes time to remove thatch.

HOW TO CREATE STRUCTURE AFTER RETIREMENT

Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE

Determine how much space you truly need. Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire.
