Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Alkaline Diet May Help Boost Cancer Treatment
Support Groups Now Running Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your opinion of the alkaline diet? I have several friends who have battled cancer, and they have adopted alkaline diets as adjuncts to their cancer treatments. Do alkaline diets assist in the treatment and prevention of cancers, or is it just another urban myth? -- T.F.C. ANSWER: A diet high in fruits and vegetables may have a beneficial effect on cancer treatment, in combination with the best cancer treatments available, whether they are surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiation-based. Some of the “alkaline diets” I have read about do emphasize fruits and vegetables, and they may help and certainly will not hurt. However, there is no diet that is a substitute for comprehensive cancer care. The body has powerful mechanisms for maintaining an exact pH, regardless of the acidity (or alkalinity) of the food you eat. Both the lungs and the kidneys work together to maintain the body’s pH at a slightly alkaline 7.4. Only with severe illness will the body’s pH come out of its narrow range of normal, and when it does, that portends a poor outcome without immediate treatment. The mechanism by which fruits and vegetables have been shown to benefit some cancers is not precisely known, but it probably has to do with healthful components of the food, not through any effect on body alkalinity.

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection.

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.
BRING MORE NATURAL LIGHT INTO A HOME Assess the situation before renovating. Walk around the house and determine which rooms get the most light and which conditions may be contributing to the problem in other areas. Dark floors and walls may be absorbing natural light and compounding the situation. You may find that only one or two rooms need attention, saving you the cost and effort associated with a major home overhaul.

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is something gardeners must do to stay safe when gardening in summer. Water carries heat away from internal organs, helping to prevent heat stroke along the way. Water takes heat through the bloodstream to the skin, resulting in sweat. Gardeners who notice they are not sweating despite the heat should drink more water and even head indoors to cool down. In addition, the American Heart Association notes that keeping the body hydrated helps the heart pump blood more easily, making gardening less taxing on the heart on hot days.

Call about consignments
www.AuctionZip.com Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Edna H. Kurtz August 29, 2021
Christina R. Kranz
South Lima/Honeoye Falls: At age 93, Edna passed peacefully on August 29, 2021. She was born on September 30, 1927 in Chicago, IL to the late Carl and Marie (Fauth) Brehm. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Norbert Kurtz; son, Robert “Bobby” Kurtz; and daughter-in-law, Linda Kurtz. Survived by children, David J. Kurtz Sr. (Regina Collins) and Diana ( Jim) Ellison; daughter-in-law, Harriet Kurtz; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, with one more due in September; siblings, Rose Marie Perkins and Carl ( Judy) Brehm; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Edna was a payroll supervisor at Champion Products in Livonia and Geneseo for many years. Upon retirement, she enjoyed 3 years in Florida with her husband, Norbert, until he passed. She then lived independently until almost 5 years ago, when she moved back north to live at Pinehurst in Honeoye Falls, where she made many friends. She was a very strong, caring mother with a dedicated faith in our Lord. She enjoyed her church family in Florida, gardening, puzzling, and crocheting. She found a great deal of enjoyment in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and in her aides at Pinehurst. She will be greatly missed by many! Family and friends may call on Tuesday, September 7th, from 3-4pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte. 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY where Edna’s Memorial Service will be held at 4pm, following calling hours. Family will gather for burial to follow at Union Cemetery, Livonia. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pinehurst, 1000 Pine Trail, Honeoye Falls, New York, 14472 or the First Presbyterian Church of Livonia, P.O. Box 105, Livonia, N.Y. 14487. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.
Herbert “Herb” R. Miller August 24, 2021
August 26, 2021 Livonia: At age 36, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at her home in Livonia. She was born in Dansville, NY to Thomas and Cynthia Kranz. Christina is also survived by her siblings, Anna Kranz, Jonathan (Abigail) Kranz, Teresa (Hae Sung) Kang, Caleb Kranz, Matthias Kranz, Timothy Kranz and Andrew Kranz; her grandparents, Gerald and Roberta Smith; along with her aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, niece, and friends. Christina is predeceased by her grandparents, Maynard and Mary Kranz. Jesus called Christina to Himself at a young age and she devoted her life to diligently seeking after Him. She lived out the Gospel by how she loved and served her family, church, community, the unsaved, and beyond. Jesus was her reason for everything she did. Her delight in the Lord was evident in her smile, how she befriended everyone, cared about her parents, and loved and supported all her younger siblings. She enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was planting and weeding the garden, hiking, hunting, canoeing or camping out. She was talented in drawing, painting, pottery, and jewelry making. Her passion for caring for others was clearly evident in how she served many through her years as a Nurse and Nurse Midwife. Between the hospital, home birth and overseas missionary settings, she delivered over 450 babies, touching each family with gentle, tender care. She was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, and most of all, Daughter of the King. She leaves a beautiful legacy of loving well and living out the Gospel. Friends and family are invited to call from 4-7PM on Friday, September 3rd, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, NY. Christina’s Funeral Service will take place at 11AM on Saturday, September 4th, 2021 at Faith Fellowship Church, 5630 Pebble Beach Road in Lakeville, NY. Services will be officiated by her church, GraceLife with Pastor Caleb Berg and Pastor Mike Tucker. To all of our family and friends, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for the flowers, cards and memorials sent at the time of the loss of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A special Thank You to Jim Murray and The Reverand Virginia Mazzarella. It is such a comfort to know that so many share our loss.
“People who fight fire with fire usually end up with ashes…” ~ Abigail Van Buren
- The Family of Beverley Dziekonski
Ms. Van Buren, better known as Dear Abby, gave millions of readers good advice through her syndicated newspaper column for nearly 50 years. She may not have been smarter than the rest of us but she certainly had more experience in the “good advice” business. Abby realized that while revenge may be sweet it seldom ends any dispute. It’s hard to turn the other cheek but returning evil for evil usually just escalates the struggle. When there is a conflict, look for a happy solution, not more trouble. We’re proud of our enviable record for providing an essential service for the families of this community. We do this in accordance with the highest ethical standards of our profession.

Wayne G. Semmel August 25, 2021
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
Geneseo: At age 83, Wayne passed peacefully on August 25, 2021 in Warsaw, NY. He was born on February 22, 1938 in Brighton, NY to the late Harold and Ethel (Vickers) Semmel. Wayne attended Geneseo Central School and married Joanne L. (Ferrell) Semmel on November 7, 1959. Wayne retired in 2000 from the Geneseo Town Highway Department where he worked for over 30 years. --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A fellow dog owner mentioned to me at the dog park that he had given his spaniel a vaccine to prevent Lyme disease. I’m wondering if I should do the same for my dog. How old should a dog be to receive the vaccine? Does it really protect dogs? -- Clint F., Saco, Maine DEAR CLINT: While it’s known that a Lyme vaccine (there are four different vaccines available today for dogs) does confer protection against contracting the disease from ticks, veterinarians are still debating whether it’s necessary to vaccinate dogs. You can read two vets’ opinions on this in a recent issue of Today’s Veterinary Practice (https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/vaccinating-dogs-against-lyme-disease/), with one for vaccination and the other not so sure. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is frequently diagnosed, and your dog loves being outdoors, you may want to consider the vaccine for your dog. If you only take your pet to the dog park and otherwise don’t spend much time exploring outside, a vaccine may not be necessary. The vaccine can be given to dogs as young as 8 to 9 weeks, and booster shots are recommended after the first shot. Even if you vaccinate your dog, you need to continue tick and flea prevention measures. Check your dog’s coat after every jaunt outside and quickly remove ticks. Mow the lawn regularly to discourage ticks and other pests from hanging out; if they’re still a problem, treat the lawn to deal with a flea or tick infestation. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but some carry other serious diseases, so keeping them off your dog and out of your home is a good idea. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Great neighbors! I would like to thank my neighbors for mowing my “lawn,” lending me your weed trimmer, and always being willing to offer a kind word and a helping hand. Also special thanks to one of our other neighbors for helping us paint our ceilings and stairs and for helping us catch our puppy when she got loose. We are so blessed to have moved to such a caring neighborhood! - Amanda D. Woodward Memorial Library Since road construction has been going on in front of the Woodward Memorial library, some patrons have been having a hard time returning & getting books, movies ect... The librarians now come down to the school 6 times a week for pick ups & drop offs which is greatly appreciated! I would like to give a shout out to Trish for taking the time to pick out some wonderful books for myself and my husband to read! All the ladies who work there are so helpful, especially when it comes to using the computer, faxing, ect... We are very thankful for their patience! Just wanted to thank you all for the great job that you do! - The Prince Family
Bad drivers I just don't understand why people driving on [local road] going towards [local road], have to pass you on the right when you are going around 65. They get in front of you to turn and then go slow, as if taunting you. Does it make you feel like a big man, Mr. Gray Toyota SUV? Seriously, what was your problem because I beat you at the light? Get a life!
Best wishes! Congrats to Steve at Steve’s Styles on his retirement! You certainly deserve it. Karen, I’m so excited for your new journey! - Christine W.
Wake up and hear the music Hard of hearing or very near is all I can figure for the "sound engineers" at concerts these days. Just attended a [local] concert the other evening, and thanks to the droning bass and percussion, I could not hear a word (lyric). So sad the money that is spent and the lack of enjoyment for these overpriced concerts, especially now that we can attend them in person! There is no need to feel the music as the sound people seem to insist upon.
Thank you! A special thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make for our country every day. It shouldn’t take tragedies like Afghanistan to bring it to our attention. Every day, for every contribution, we should convey how much your service is appreciated!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles On Our Wish List: Basketballs The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not urgently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. Livingston County Announces New Funding with Back to Business Program BY LIVINGSTON COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
L
ivingston County Economic Development (LCED) has received supplemental Community Development Block Grant funding to be used to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. In response to the economic hardships experienced by businesses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, these funds are being used to provide grants to eligible businesses to support customer and staff safety, improve business resiliency, reopen Livingston County businesses to full capacity, and expand businesses to recover revenue quickly. Eligible businesses must be located in Livingston County, must be a for-profit sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, Limited Liability Company or other legal form of business, and must have 25 or fewer employees. Eligible businesses must create new jobs, restore jobs (including increasing hours), or retain jobs that are at risk of being lost if financial assistance is not received. If the business has five or fewer owners and employees, the applicant may be able to income qualify for funding in place of creating jobs. All projects must be located in Livingston County, New York and have a “brick-andmortar” business location that is not a home address. “This is an opportunity for resilience and growth in the businesses of Livingston County. Bill Bacon, LCED Director These grants are meant to spur innovation and adaptation to the new reality of economic life with a highly contagious virus”, says Bill Bacon, Director of Economic Development. Back to Business will make grants of up to $60,000 per eligible applicant. “This program will bring back jobs, enhance the way business is done, and expand services to increase customer satisfaction,” says Bacon. “We have definitely seen an increase in people supporting local businesses,” said Maureen Wheeler, LCED Deputy Director. “A lot of people are moving to the area, and customers are visiting local businesses once again. Our Back to Business program seeks to proactively help businesses better prepare for the future.” To qualify, businesses must demonstrate hardship from COVID and show that they have a project they are working on for their business. These projects are expected to vary from things like expanding outdoor dining to bringing people back to work to restoring businesses to pre-COVID hours. “Customers expect a different type of service than they did in the past, including options such as touch-free checkout, curbside pickup, and e-commerce availability,” explained

Wheeler. “They want to be able to browse merchandise online before they order, for example. These expectations are here to stay.” Grant funds will be provided as a reimbursement for eligible expenses, not to exceed 80% of total project cost. Eligible expenses must be incurred after award, and within 90 days of award. Program funds may be used for any justifiable business purpose associated with the expansion or establishment of operations after the negative impacts of COVID-19 including, but not limited to furniture, fixtures, equipment, operating expenses, and working capital that will prevent, prepare for, and respond to the impacts of the Maureen Wheeler, coronavirus pandemic. AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it. Suggestions from Melanie Marcus, MA, RD, health and nutrition communications manager for Dole Food Company - www.dole.com
