MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
* On Jan. 25, 1776, the Continental Congress authorizes the first national Revolutionary War memorial in honor of Gen. Richard Montgomery, who had been killed during an assault on Quebec on Dec. 31, 1775, one of the first generals of the American Revolution to lose his life on the battlefield.
* On Jan. 28, 1855, the Panama Railway, which carried thousands of unruly gold miners to California via the dense jungles of Central America, dispatches its first train across the Isthmus of Panama. The Panama Canal would parallel the railway 50 years later.
* On Jan. 31, 1944, D-Day is postponed until June when several key leaders agreed that there would not be enough ships available by May. D-Day would later be postponed once more, by a single day due to high winds. Finally, on the morning of June 6, the long-awaited invasion of France began.
TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR
Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals. GENESEO GROVELAND EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY
CrockpotsandRecipes BringCheerandComfort
BY DEB MACLEAN
is year, the Geneseo Groveland Emergency Food Pantry had an extra gi for clients participating in the Holiday Program.
e story begins with the image of chicken legs in a crockpot on a Facebook page. Knowing that we had chicken legs at the pantry, and that they can be hard to cook, the idea started to take shape. What if we were to gi our clients a crockpot? Was it even economically feasible? everynextweek, wereceivedanemailaboutagrant opportunity with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. While the Health Equity Innovation Award funding was intended to support efforts to decrease health disparities in those living in rural or urban areas who may be at higher risk for poor health outcomes, we figured it was worth a shot and applied for the grant, upselling the nutritional benefits of using a crockpot.
Much to our delight, we were awarded the grant to purchase the crockpots. At the same time, Amazon washavingaPrimeDayssale, andwouldn’tyouknow, crockpots were on sale. We ordered 70, the number we always use for holiday planning, to be delivered to various volunteers’ homes for transport to the pantry.
Once the 70 crockpots were in-house, we got busy preparing for distribution. Because what good is a crockpot without a recipe? Since we provide a nice ham for Christmas dinner, we decided to include a recipe for heating the ham in the crockpot with brown sugar as well as another recipe for ham & bean soup, along with all the ingredients.
en on to the gi wrapping. We are fortunate enough to have the students from the LIVES Program volunteer at the pantry to help us on a regular basis. e LIVES Program (Learning Independence, Vocational, and Educational Skills) is a four-year transition program located on the campus of the State University of New York College at Geneseo. e students have been volunteering at the pantryforquiteafewyearsnow, makingkidbags, checking dates, and occasionally doing some shopping. Between the students and the regular pantry volunteers, all of the crockpots were wrapped and ready to go.
With the help of the Central Presbyterian Youth Group and the Geneseo Rotary, the crockpots were all delivered or picked up at the pantry on December 21st as part of the 2024 Holiday Program.
Not only were we able to provide our clients with a means by which they can cook tasty and nutritious meals, we now have the opportunity to provide crockpot theme bags throughout the year. A theme bag contains all the ingredients for a meal, including the recipe. We love theme bags almost as much as our clients!
is year, with the help of the community, our Holiday Program helped over 200 local families with anksgiving and Christmas dinner and provided gi s for 250 children.
e recipe is a sample, not the one provided by the writer.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Rinse the dried beans and remove any debris. If you prefer, soak the beans overnight in water, then drain before adding them to the crockpot. (You can skip this step, but it helps with cooking time and digestibility.)
In the crockpot, add the beans, ham bone (or diced ham), onion, garlic, carrots, celery, chicken broth, bay leaf, and thyme.
Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4-5 hours, until the beans are tender and the ham is falling off the bone.
If you used a ham bone, remove it, shred the meat, and return it to the soup. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Ladle the soup into bowls and enjoy! Add a slice of crusty bread for the perfect meal.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC
Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

Transparency Starts with The Basics: Water
Water – from the source to the sewer, water is one of Avon’s most precious resources.
From the time each gallon enters our system, winds through our processing (“production”) plant, then flows through miles of aging pipes, tanks, and pumps to arrive at your tap, our Department of Public Works keeps it all going smoothly and safely.
A er we’ve turned on those taps, flushed those toilets, and redirected that stormwater, our Sewer Department processes those gallons so they can safely re-enter the water cycle. Once again, there are aging pipes, pumps, and a treatment system to maintain.
While these departments have robust budgets, funded in part by your water & sewer bills, fixing and updating these systems costs millions of dollars, which the village secures in the form of loans and loans need to be paid back. As we enter budgeting season, our village administration will be working to find the $333,420+ necessary to make this year’s loan payments on our $3,227,144 of water- & sewer-based debt.
Better understanding where our dollars are going helps us make sure our Village is financially healthy. If you have questions, please come to our next Village Board meeting: 6 pm, ursday, February 6th at the Village Hall.

TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT LAWYER
Ask someone you trust. The ABA® notes that seeking recommendations from friends, relatives or business associates can be a great way to find a reliable lawyer. Individuals you know who live nearby may offer advice on who to hire or even lawyers to avoid based on their own experiences, so don’t hesitate to ask around. However, the ABA® points out that no two legal cases are the same, so a lawyer who was right for a loved one’s case may not necessarily be perfect for you.

Understanding the Mechanisms Behind a Nuclear Stress Test
DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a comment about your recent column on nuclear stress tests. As an 87-year-old person who has experienced atrial fibrillation and a mild stroke, I have had two nuclear stress tests done. In both cases, I told the supervising nurse I wanted to go to the max limits that they would allow. Even though I attempted to prepare by briskly walking up the hill close to my home and thought I was doing well on the treadmill, I failed to reach the final parameters that they were seeking.
To get me there, I was injected with something (the name escapes me) that is supposed to achieve the same result as the final stage of a nuclear stress test. As I recall the discussion, the nurse stated that many couldn’t get as far as I did. Medications were a way for them to obtain the needed results. -- J.M.
ANSWER: Stress testing may be done for several reasons, but the most common is to determine whether there are blockages in the arteries in the heart that are severe enough to limit blood flow. When ordering a stress test, the clinician has to decide how to stress the heart and get information from it.
In people who can exercise (meaning they don’t have an orthopedic or neurological condition that keeps them from being able to move), then using exercise is the best approach in almost all cases. Exercise is safer since you can stop doing it at any time, and it also provides useful information. People who can exercise for a longer time (9 minutes on a standard protocol called a Bruce) have a very good prognosis; whereas if you can’t make it to 3 minutes, this is a poor prognosis.
The treadmill gets steeper and faster every 3 minutes on a Bruce protocol so that eventually even an Olympic athlete has to give up. The goal is to get to maximum exercise where a person simply can’t go any further. The person who runs the stress test looks for any sign of incipient heart damage through an electrocardiogram (EKG), a blood pressure monitor, or symptoms so that the test can be stopped if it seems dangerous.
Despite trying really hard, some people cannot get their heart rate and blood pressure high enough where the stress test can diagnose heart disease. In this case, the exercise stress test is converted to a pharmacologic stress test. A medication, such as dobutamine, is given to make the heart beat faster and stronger until the adequate workload is achieved.
Many of my patients tell me that this is uncomfortable, and more than once, I have heard someone say, “My heart was going to jump out of my chest.” If there are signs of danger, the medication can be stopped, and in some cases, a reversal agent is given.
Once the heart is at an adequate level of exertion, abnormalities in the blood flow can be detected by the EKG. However, the test’s sensitivity can be improved by looking at blood flow through a radioactive chemical injected in the blood, which can measure blood flow to various regions of the heart more precisely. The sensitivity can also be improved by examining the heart’s wall movement through echocardiography. In other cases, a more limited stress test is done to determine the safety of exercise. This is often done after a heart attack to determine which exercises a person can do as part of their cardiac rehab.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. (c) 2025 King Features Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Travel early morning or late at night. Morning flights tend to be less crowded and are less likely to have takeoff delays that can push kids into meltdown mode. Kids are apt to be tired in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, so traveling, whether by road or sky, when they’re likely to sleep can be advantageous.

• Keep your tires ‘aired up’: For every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in outside temperature, your tire’s inflation pressure will change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). Improperly inflated tires can lead to poor traction, decreased control and skidding.
• Slowly accelerate and decelerate: Applying engine power slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry, and take extra care and time to-slow down when stopping.
• Invest in a set of dedicated winter tires for your vehicle: Winter tires are specifically designed to provide improved traction in cold, snowy and icy conditions. Whether your vehicle is front, rear or all-wheel drive, winter tires can offer an additional element of performance to get you through those tricky winter driving months.
• Check your tread to beat the snow: Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the winter season, so it is important to make sure your tires are ready for the winter conditions before hitting the road. A quick way to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are small raised bars that run in-between a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is worn down to these indicator bars, it’s time to change to a new set of tires.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY
WINTERTIME CAN BE ‘SNOW’ MUCH FUN TO DISCOVER
Winter storms are on the way. While many people are anxious to see landscapes covered in white, others already are counting down the days to spring blooms. Weather can be awe-inspiring and interesting, and learning the secrets about snow is no exception.
Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice.
Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887.
Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance.
Eventhoughsnowismorecommoninnorthernelevationsandcoldregions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season.
Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low.
Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories.
Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING
When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well.
Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall.
Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles.
Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Maintain appliances and replace older ones. While reducing reliance on energy-thirsty appliances is a great way to reduce energy consumption, no one needs to throw away their refrigerators. Instead, maintain appliances so they are not forced to work harder, and thereby consume more energy, to function. Routinely clean the filters on window air conditioners, replacing them if they’re worn down. In addition, have HVAC units serviced annually to ensure they’re operating at peak capacity. Replace older appliances, including refrigerators, that are no longer effective.

Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children.
So much to offer, all under one roof.

Winter Activity: Painting
It looks like we’re in for a long winter, with extremely cold temperatures in several places. Many of us are already realizing that we just don’t want to go out in that. But what shall we do to occupy ourselves while we’re at home?
I don’t know how it started, but in my neighborhood this winter the favorite activity has become ... painting. Each day new photos of “works of art” are sent around via cellphones as the idea spreads. I decided to join in. Between the internet and home deliveries, we have access to everything we need without going out!
My first step was to do a YouTube search for painting lessons. Right at the top was “Beginner’s Guide to Painting,” and I was off and running. On YouTube it’s possible to narrow down the search results to the subjects you’re most interested in learning to paint, whether it’s sunsets, flowers, mountains, snow scenes, cats, dogs, lakes, vintage cars, beaches -- if it can be painted, there’s a tutorial for it. The topics can be further broken down by watercolor and acrylic painting.
There are even videos that outline what supplies you need.
Some suggestions, if you’d like to paint:
Unless you have a store near you that will ship or deliver supplies to you, look online for the big names such as Michaels, Joann and Hobby Lobby as places to start.
You need paint and water, and something to paint on, such as paper or canvas panels, plus a selection of brushes. Add in a small plastic palette for mixing colors.
Look for beginner kits that have a selection of a dozen or so small tubes of acrylic paint colors or a dozen watercolors in a metal tray.
If you fear you have no real talent for painting, I invite you to explore Acrylic Squeegee Painting on YouTube. That technique can make anyone an artist!

What’s Your Dream?
If you visit our school’s website, you will find the following language (bold type added by me) under Avon CSD Board of Education: “Wehopethisinformationis helpful toyou asyou participate in the district’s governing process. We are pleased to be the community’s voice…”
You will also find background information regarding the members of the Board: a statement that one board member “looks forward to being responsive and respectful to our Avon communityandallstakeholders:andanothermember“is committed to making informed decisions based on the best interests of students, school and community.”Lastly, oneboardmemberbelieves that the school is the heart of our community.”
Now these are all nice sentiments, and I believe when they were expressed, they were sincere. However, it appears that the people responsible for the management of our public school have gone down the path that we all choose when we are left to ourselves, accountable to no one else. Left solely to their own interests, all people will, in the end, choose the path that suits themselves thebest.Itisournature.Andtheonlywaytoavoid this pitfall is to be held accountable by those around us and those to whom we are responsible.
Before November 18th, 2024, I had attended only three board meetings since moving to Avon in 2006. One was for new staff introductions, and no community members were present. In the other two, I was the only community member. This lack of community participation seems to have left the board feeling that they “are on their own.” I believe that as an inactive community member I have played a part in creating this disconnect! I have noticed a similar attitude from the Board toward the teaching staff where they give only lip service to participation and support without truly valuing the teachers’ input or involving them in decision making.
I am beginning to look at the recent State Comptroller’s Report as a valuable gift to our community. It seems to be the catalyst need-
ed to bring us together to ask important questions and share ideas regarding our school. Unfortunately, recent meetings with the Board have been unproductive, defensive, and even adversarial. Recent forums held by the teachers, however, have sparked healthy conversation, raised important questions, and generated productive ideas for the improvement of our school and community. These forums have brought to light the reality that neither the community nor the teaching staff trusts the Board when it comes to making decisions that are in the best interests of the students, the school, or the community. If our children are to thrive this is a circumstance that cannot be allowed to continue. This is an unhealthy situation, and I am confident that productive, positive solutions to these problems are in our future.
As did Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I have a dream. I dream that the day will come when our community’s input and ideas are solicited and valued: a day when the school’s leadership is active in our community and supportive of its values and its activities. A day when the school’s teachers are valued by their leaders, and their wisdom and ideas are actively solicited and genuinely considered: a day when there is a long list of teachers waiting to join the ranks of the teaching staff because of our school’s reputation as a place where leadership is trustworthy, and teachers and students thrive. A day when the Avon Central School is one of the crown jewels of this community and each student graduates prepared to assume a fulfilling and productive lifeofservicetotheirfamilyandthiscommunity.
What is YOUR dream? The people who have been entrusted with the management of the Avon Central School need to know and value your dream and that will only happen if you tell them, insist that they listen and intentionally challenge them to operate your school in a manner that supports that dream.
Michael Garrett
e next meeting of the Avon Central School District Board of Education will be on Monday, February 10th, 2025, at 6:00pm in the Middle School Library. I am looking forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Dear Amazing Person
Thank you, thank you, thank you to the wonderful person who found and turned in my anniversay ring at the Geneseo Walmart on February 1st. I was absolutely heartsick when I realized it was missing. You are a wonderful, amazing and honest person and have proven to me that there are still great people in this world!
You are an angel in my eyes!
On Friday, a couple of weeks ago, I came out of Tops in Dansville and my car wouldn’t start. Tried a couple of times and due to the radio and heat being on and because it was about 11 degrees out it just wouldn’t! A young lady knocked on my window and asked if I needed help. I said my car won’t start, and she said give me 10 minutes, I’ll go home and get my jumper cables. She drove away in a fairly new Ford pickup and sure enough she came back. By that time my car recouped enough power to start. I ran over to tell her it started and thanked her. I can’t tell you how much that meant to an older person that this young person would be so kind! I didn’t get her name but I certainly would know her if I saw her again! Thank you!
Remarkable Young Lady
While I do appreciate having safe roads to drive on during snowy winter weather, I am dismayed at the amount of salt that coats the roads in our village and town. Not only is it terrible for the environment, it is a waste of taxpayer money, not just for the salt but with
Plows are out on roads that are clear of snow at all hours of the day and night (can you say overtime?). I passed 6 plows on a 15 minute drive to a nearby town last night. Highway departments, please show some restraint and implement sensible salting and plowing policies!

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES
Sozo is a 2 year old hound mix, about 60lbs. He loves walks and treats. We don’t know how he is with cats or kids. He seems to love other dogs. For more info on Sozo, call

Arguably one of the most challenging - and often frustrating - components about puppyhood is training the dog to use the outdoors for bathroom needs. It’s easy to underestimate the time involved in housebreaking a puppy. The Humane Society of America says puppies typically can control their bladders for one hour for every month of age. That means if the dog is three months old, he can hold it for about three hours.
This is Harley, our 6 month old Cavachon puppy. He loves blueberries, stealing socks, and playing with his cousin Daisy the Boston Terrier. But above all he is a huge cuddle bug & loves a warm lap!

Cold weather can be deadly for outdoor cats
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I care for a rescued barn cat who refuses to come indoors -- she will come onto the porch for food and water, and let me pet her, but that’s about it. I was able to get “Gertie” spayed a few years back, so that’s no longer a problem. However, I worry about her in the cold weather. What do you recommend to keep outdoor cats from suffering in freezing temperatures? -- Caroline in Roanoke, Virginia
DEAR CAROLINE: Shelter is important during the coldest months of the year, and even if an outdoor cat has survived OK in past winters, that can change -- especially as they get older.
Food, water and shelter are the three biggest things you can provide to help an outdoor cat survive and remain healthy during the winter. Place fresh water in a container that won’t freeze easily, such as a thick-walled dish.
The Humane Society of the United States recommends building (or purchasing) an outdoor cat shelter that is appropriatefortheirsize--nottoosnug,butnotsolargethat it can’t hold in the cat’s body heat (www.humanesociety. org/resources/how-care-outdoor-cats-winter).
You can line the inside of the shelter with Mylar sheets that reflect body heat even better. For bedding, an old pillowcase filled with packing peanuts or crumpled newspaper is helpful, or you can use straw. Place the shelter near where you’ve observed the cat resting, or try placing it on the porch next to her food and water. (Don’t put water inside the shelter in case it spills.)
Remove and replace bedding every couple of weeks to keep things fresh and help maintain warmth. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2025 King Features Synd., Inc.
