HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

New Year’s Resolutions for Happy, Healthy Pets --DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-of-life planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021.

Dansville Student Maggie Bacon Recognized for Deliciously Good Cause BY AMANDA DUDEK
O
n Tuesday, December 15th, Dansville sophomore Maggie Bacon was recognized with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Foundation’s “Do the Right Thing” Award. The award was piloted by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Foundation to recognize Livingston County students for positive community involvement such as assisting Law Enforcement and First Responders as well as acts of civic responsibility and volunteerism, heroism, role model behavior and leadership. Maggie Bacon, i.e. “The Bacon Baker,” also received a gift card from the LCCOPS Union, but for her, the real gift is the opportunity to give back to the community she loves. It all started last spring when schools across New York shut down and began remote instruction due to the pandemic. Maggie, like so many students, suddenly found herself spending a lot more time at home. “I was bored, and I wanted to find something I could do to take my time and use it wisely to do something fun and therapeutic,” she recalled. Not an ‘artsy’ person in the more traditional sense, Maggie started baking. “It was a way to showcase my creativity in a different way,” she said. As she began making more and more, Maggie created an Instagram account for her hobby: @the.bacon.baker. Before she knew it, friends and neighbors were buzzing about the delicious-looking sweets she was making. “My original intent was not to make any money; I was just doing what I loved doing,” explained Maggie. “I started receiving many unexpected followers, and people were asking to purchase my items.” She decided to use this unexpected development to give back. “My community was doing so much to help those in need during this hard time,” she said. “I had heard a lot about the Dansville Backpack Program which is run through the Dansville PTO. My aunt is a PTO member, and the school was doing a lot to donate to it. I wanted to give back, and this was close to my heart.” Maggie decided to begin taking orders for her baked goods and to accept donations to help those who needed help buying food. To her, this was a no-brainer. “I have been baking since I was little,” shared Maggie. “I would bake with my mom and my great aunt on my mother’s side. We have old recipes that we love to make. I really love doing it!” Beyond recipes, Maggie also points to her family as her inspiration to use her talent to help others. “My family has been the biggest influence for me,” she said. “They have always been focused on giving back and helping others. My dad has always given back to the community and been a positive influence, and my mom helped me decided what to make and how to give back. Through everything, they have been hugely supportive.” Maggie’s idea took off like wildfire as orders started pouring in. “It was just awesome,” she said, adding she quickly found herself creating all kinds of baked goods. “I have baked a lot! I have made everything from pies, pastries, and cinnamon rolls, to cakes, pound cakes, and Bundt cakes, brownies, raspberry and apple turnover, and cupcakes!”

Her favorite are the cupcakes. “They are probably my favorite things to make because of all the creativity involved, and you have so many opportunities to make their frosting swirls just right.” Maggie has made many kinds of cupcakes, including red velvet and carrot cake, but her most popular flavor is her signature chocolate

cake and cupcake. “I found a recipe, and I revamped it,” she explained. “I worked on it and tried different things until it was perfect. It has become my signature recipe!” Her hard work and generosity caught the attention of Livingston County Deputy Robert Holt, who then nominated Maggie for the “Do the Right Thing” Award. Noting Maggie’s motivation and positive attitude, Deputy Holt stated, “During the 2019 Covid-19 Pandemic, like all schools in our area, Dansville Central School District shut down. All children were sent home while teachers and administrators scrambled to begin remote instruction. Maggie Bacon took the time away from school to do something good for her community...To date, Maggie has donated over $1,350 to the Dansville Backpack Program. Maggie also helps her dad organize the Rotary Club Thanksgiving Dinners, while running cross country, dancing and working at the Expressway Auto Auction.” Maggie was completely surprised. “I honestly felt so honored,” she said. “It is such an amazing award to receive. It feels good to demonstrate civic responsibility and help our community, and I hope other people are inspired to help our community be the best it can be, as well. Our community is really close,” Maggie continued, adding her thanks to Dansville Central School for their positive influence and support. “We stick together. We can lean on each other, and it is such an incredible community to live in.” Maggie is currently continuing to bake in support of the Dansville Backpack Program, recently having finished a large order of cinnamon roll cakes for Christmas morning. To view and order baked goods from Maggie, visit @the.bacon.baker on Instagram.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

My name is
Eggnog I am an 8-month-old Easter Egger. I may be a mix breed but I’m the best in the flock because I lay beautiful colored eggs like blue and green! I enjoy showing off each morning with my egg song, yes, I sing when I lay an egg! Whilst not strictly a purebred, the Easter Egger has become a backyard favorite across America. With its cute looks and vibrant personality what’s not to like? They are known as Easter Eggers because they can lay a wide variety of egg colors and their plumage can also be various colors. Generally, in the US an Easter Egger is a bird that is understood to carry the blue egg laying gene from its parent stock (the Araucana or Ameraucana).

The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

* Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. * For stubborn dry patches on hands, like knuckles and around fingernails, try rubbing in a bit of Chapstick. It does the trick to moisturize, and it doesn’t wash off as easily. * “To protect feet from getting soggy when out in snowy or rainy weather, cut a piece of plastic wrap about 3 inches longer than your foot on both sides, then step on it and fold it up on all sides before you put your foot in your shoe. It also keeps feet warm.” -- M.S. in Colorado * “I use the old-fashioned round coffee filters to cover food in the microwave. Less expensive than paper plates and stays in place but doesn’t stick to food.” -- N.B. in Texas * D.R. in Illinois uses flip-flops for some unusual purposes, like covered with sandpaper as a sanding block, covered with a chamois for waxing a car or even to apply paint. He says they can be found on clearance for less than a dollar. One thing you shouldn’t do: “Don’t ever weed eat your driveway while wearing! Personal injury.” * When making meatloaf, put strips of raw bacon on the bottom of the pan and place the meatloaf on top. It adds terrific flavor and will keep the meatloaf from sticking to the pan. * “I purchased a dish drain pad approximately 9 inches by 17 inches, and I use it on the seat of my shower so it won’t be slippery. It fits perfect -- especially good for seniors! I am 86 years old, so I need all the help I can get.” -- B. B. In Massachusetts GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The organization Food and Water Watch notes that living conditions for hens raised in cage-free environments may still be poor.

DECOR IDEAS TO GIVE HOMES A FRESH LOOK THIS SPRING ACCENT FEATURES: Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel.

by John Thomas We have, then, arrived at a great truth, namely, that the “one hope of the gospel” preached by the apostles to the Jew first, and afterwards to the Greek, was “the hope of Israel;” that the subject of it was the kingdom of God and Shiloh; and that these were the matter of the promise made to the fathers. It remains for us now to look into this promise so that we may come to understand it well; for its provisions are the things of the kingdom; and to be ignorant of these is to be without understanding, and therefore faithless, of the gospel of Christ. The apostle Paul, who will be our interpreter, tells us that the promise, which is the subject of the “one hope,” was made to “the fathers.” This is a phrase which signifies sometimes the predecessors of the generation of the apostles’ time, who were contemporary with the prophets (Heb. 1:1), and at others, the fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exo. 4:5). It is in the latter sense the apostle uses the phrase in connection with “the promises;” for speaking of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he says, “these all died in faith not having received the promises;” that is, the things contained in the promise: and after adding “a cloud of witnesses,” who lived in after ages, and who illustrated their faith in the promise made to the fathers, he concludes by saying, “these all, having received a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect,” (Heb. 11: 13, 39-40) by a resurrection from the dead to inherit the kingdom. They must rise from the dust before they can receive the promise. They are imperfect now, being in ruins. But when they are re-fashioned by the Spirit of God, and spring forth for glorious, incorruptible, and powerful, men, “equal to lite Elohim,” they will have been “made perfect,” and fit for the kingdom of God. But, they are not to be thus perfected until all the believers of the promise are brought in; For all the faithful of all previous ages are to be perfected together. Interested? LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind. Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information. Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***

PITCH IN AND SAVE MONEY Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

Karen Phyllis Arrigenna (Dougherty) December 22, 2020 Fowlerville - Karen Phyllis Dougherty (KP/ Nana) 78, passed away peacefully at her home in the presence of her loving family on December 22, 2020.
(Clifton) Miché Fambro November 6, 1956 - December 18, 2020 Conesus: Miché Fambro (known to his family and close friends as Mick) died much too soon on Dec. 18, 2020 after battling cancer. He is survived by his wife, Wendy; daughters, Michael (Gerald Swanson) and Naomi; and granddaughters, Leona and Marqui Swanson Fambro. Miché is also survived by his mother, Vivian McCord; siblings, Pat Fambro, Greg James and Angie McCord; many other cherishedextended family members; his puppet, Newton, and his beloved guitar(s). Born in Philadelphia, Miché discovered the guitar in his early teens and almost immediately began gathering neighborhood friends to create music. He was a natural arranger and bandleader, and due to being a lefty, he was also self-taught. Not knowing any differently, young Mick just flipped the guitar over and his unique sound was born. He left Philadelphia in 1979 to join a hotel band that toured the US. Many gigs later, the band played a show in Geneseo, NY, and Miché decided to quit touring and stay for a while. As it turned out, he met his wife in that small town and it became home. Miché’s fans date back to his first Geneseo band, The Deserters, and then expanded with the birth of his very popular group, Miché and the Anglos. Eventually, Miché moved into his solo career which he described as “recreating the energy of a band with a single instrument and voice.” Being a full-time, professional musician was a challenging road but ultimately brought him into venues throughout the US, Canada and Europe. His online fanbase reaches around the world, and Miché earned a reputation for being a “breath of fresh air” with his original, intricate, compelling performances and his humble, humorous, self-effacing presence. He was joy. He was magic. Behind the scenes was a loving, supportive family who were blessed to have Miché Fambro creating the soundtrack for their lives. Wendy, Michael and Naomi want nothing more than to have people continue to discover and enjoy the music and videos that Miché created in his all-too-brief sojourn on this earth. Please visit his YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/user/mfambro Download his music at: https://michefambro.bandcamp.com A public celebration of Miché’s life and legacy will be held after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Donations in memory of Miché Fambro may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church of Rochester, NY: online – www.immanuelrochester.org, or by check – 815 Park Ave., Rochester, NY 14607. Karen was born on November 16, 1942 in Batavia, NY to Harold and Phyllis (Burgett) Dougherty. As a graduate of St. Agnes School in Avon and St. Agnes High School in Rochester, it was there that Karen forged lasting friendships and her deep, unfailing faith. On July 1, 1961, Karen married the love of her life, Jim Arrigenna. Together they raised their five children, instilling the strong foundation of family. Predeceased by her loving husband, Jim of 54 years. Karen is admired by her devoted children, Jackie ( Jack) Magiera, Patti (Dan) Barefoot, Chrissy (Larry) Harris, Julie (Dave Downey), and Jim Arrigenna. Karen beamed with pride for her five grandchildren: Jaymeson (Samantha) Barefoot, Kellen Magiera, Connor (Cassie Metzinger) Magiera, Abby (Steve Geer) Barefoot and Quinn Magiera. Karen shared loving relationships with Sue Stella Winkfield and Rachael Unger Brown and family. The middle child of eleven, Karen kept her siblings close to her heart, Marcia Quinlan, Kay (Ron) McAfee, Jerry (Kim) Dougherty, Peter (Barb) Dougherty, Cheryl (Bill) Bryar, Kevin Dougherty, Pam (Peter) Arrigenna. She fondly remembered those who went before her. Brothers John, Jim, and sister, Mary Jane. She shared a special, loving bond with “sister” Rose Biondolillo and aunt, Leah Vitale. She was grateful to family for their generosity, visits and support, which included many nieces and nephews who shared so much love and kindness. She lit up with pictures, videos, and notes from great nieces and nephews. Staying connected to family was important to her. Sending cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations would have lottery tickets included. Karen connected with all generations which brought her joy. Karen’s kitchen table was the hub filled with prayer, family, friends and great food. Her belief in life’s journey came with great appreciation to health care providers, too. This includes Dr. Sasha Nelson, Wendy Chapman, and Kerry Prentice. Her Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church, Avon was held on Monday, December 28 at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Geneseo. Donations may be made in her memory to Livingston County Hospice- 2 County Campus, Mt. Morris, NY 14510 and St. Agnes School Foundation (the little gem on the circle)- 60 Park Place, Avon, NY 14414.
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

Gerald R. Henry “Gerry” “Pat” December 23, 2020 Livonia, NY: At age 87, Gerry passed peacefully at his home on December 23, 2020. He was born on August 8, 1933 in Conesus, NY to the late George and Neva (Rightmeyer) Henry. He was also predeceased by his wife, Joan Marie (Gebo) Henry and brothers, William, John, Howard, and James Henry. Survived by children, Steven Henry of VA, George (Mary) Henry of FL, Tracy ( James) Moulton of Auburn, Susan (Michael) Reed of FL, and Cynthia Patterson of Auburn; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jennifer, Connie, Travis, Trenton, Roland, and Ryan; many great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie Rossborough of Groveland and Arlene Moyer of Livonia; also survived by many other loving family and friends. Gerry served four years active duty in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and later served another four years in the Air Force Reserves. He was the Materials Manager at Snyder General in Auburn, NY and retired after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Conlon Mulvaney American Legion Post 1179 and was active in his community. Gerry was well known to have the nicest looking lawn on Woodruff Road and always prided himself in taking good care of his family, friends, and his home. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, December 30th, from 3-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY where his funeral service will be held at 5pm, following calling hours. Rev. Dan Finch will be the celebrant. Burial, with military honors, will be held at 10am on Thursday, December 31st, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 6020 Lake Ave. Ext., Auburn, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in Gerry’s memory to the Conlon-Mulvaney American Legion, 6317 Marshall Road, Conesus, NY 14435 or the Harrison-Lee American Legion, 3850 Federal Road, Livonia, NY 14487. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 346-5401
Flower Meanings If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.
Laurel E. Grundman (Straight) December 27, 2020 Honeoye: At age 82, Laurel passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at her home in Honeoye. She was born in Rochester, NY to the late John and Libbie Straight. Survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Harold Grundman; her children, Jeff (Becky) Briggs, Don (Linda) Briggs, Ken (Becky) Briggs, Cindi (Garth) Thomas, Karen Stephens, Nancy Titus, John (Melissa) Miles; her 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her siblings, John Straight, Robert Straight, Wallace Straight and Louise Straight. Laurel will be greatly missed. As a mother of seven children, Laurel’s home was always filled with much love and affection. She would spend many of her days at her sewing machine creating beautiful pillows and quilts. She was gifted with both poetry and music, and she’d sing silly songs to her children and grandchildren to make them laugh. Everything in life would remind her of a song. Laurel also loved nature: the trees and the flowers, and most particularly pretty yellow daffodils. Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday, January 7th, from 2-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street, Honeoye, where Laurel’s Memorial Service will take place at 11am on Friday, January 8th. Memorial Contributions may be made to The Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 or https://shop.arborday.org/donations. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 229-2444 *Please note, the Funeral Home will be operating at 33% capacity per state guidelines. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.
Puzzle Answers This Week INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
SPOTTED WORDS
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
The Best You Can Do A show of hands, please. Is anybody else getting worn out by the current state of our lives? Is there anything we can do about it? All I wanted was a package of socks. That shouldn’t be hard. In the past, once a year or so, I’d stroll into the local store, grab a package off the shelf (especially happy when I found a bonus pack with 2 extra pairs in it), pay for it and walk out. And now? Now I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t dare walk into stores just to wander around, so I’m left to do my hunt on the internet. These particular socks are nowhere to be found ... except for the ones at three times the price on Amazon. Then there was the phone call from a neighbor, in the middle of my hunt, describing a new family panic. A family member is undergoing serious medical treatment. They just learned that his nurse tested positive for COVID. Is anyone else tired of the need for constant vigilance because of COVID? The inability to acquire basic goods and sometimes food? The constant sad stories of seniors who are in rehab centers who haven’t had visitors in months? That’s probably what breaks my heart the most, all those lonely seniors in nursing homes or retirement centers. I can’t do anything about the state of the world, but I can do this: Over the next week I’m going to send individual notes and cards to the residents of a local nursing home. I got all their first names and last initials from the facility director, and I’ve ordered a big box of miscellaneous greeting cards. Each one will get a note and a cheery card from me. Maybe it will help brighten their day for a few minutes. It’s the best I can do. c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

A Big Thanks to Anthony at Hamlin Post Office I ordered stamps online, and somehow, I missed that they were going to be delivered to the same address as mine, but to Rochester, rather than to my correct city. Anthony, the postmaster in Hamlin, got up with me the following day. He was so kind and considerate. Immediately, he remedied my problem. He said that he would replace all four books of stamps. How kind! Within minutes of our phone conversation, our doorbell rings, and low and behold, it is Anthony personally delivering them to my home. I am so thankful that there are still kind and considerate people in the world. Sad to say, the people who got my four books of stamps, as of yet, have made no attempt to return what does not belong to them.
Brilliant books Just opened a gift that we got for our grandkids: an encyclopedia. Remember those? And it is wonderful! Beautifully illustrated with a terrific variety of interesting subjects and fun to read, and published by Britannica who has a rich history in encyclopedias. And the beauty of such a resource is that it pulls you into its pages and information more so than any website ever could. The power of the printed page is still first when it comes to recall and exposure to more ideas than a static computer screen. Give your brain a break. Turn off the internet and pick up a book!
Merry Christmas! On December 21st, my estranged daughter and I decided to meet for breakfast at Patty’s Place in Canandaigua. While we were there, someone bought our breakfast for us. I would like to thank that person. He or she has no idea how much that meant to me as I am a single mom trying to hold things together. I was moved literally to tears. It was an important day for my daughter and I as we are trying to mend fences, and this person added to this important breakfast and reminded both of us to give. Thank you so much! You are a blessing in this world.
Santa Mobile On Monday, December 21, the Riga Recreation “Santa Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of unique and tastefully decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his trusty elves and others to choose the 14 homes and then give them “Secret Santa” gift cards purchased from local businesses. We were greeted by many surprised smiles and the cards were given to residents in a socially distant manner. (Yes, Santa had his mask on!) Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring precious smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas, Dave, Riga Recreation Supervisor

Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.
