CONSERVE ENERGY THIS WINTER BY CHOOSING THE RIGHT WINDOWS
Winter is upon us, but the window hasn’t closed for homeowners to keep their heating bills from going through the roof.
While exploring tactics for cutting energy costs, there might be no more critical consideration than windows. A home with inefficient windows is almost like a home with a hole in the wall -- and installing energy-efficient windows can shave up to 15 percent off heating and cooling bills, according to estimates based on data set forth in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star Savings Estimates (www.energystar.gov/windows).
Numerous factors determine a window’s energy efficiency. Windows with a lower “U-Factor,” for example, are preferable in colder regions because they allow less heat to escape.
Here are some other tips to find the best windows for your home:
• Consider your conservation goals. One homeowner may simply want greater energy efficiency.Another may be drawn to “passive” or “net zero” building practices -whose requirements are designed to maintain comfortable temperatures with incredibly minimal heating and cooling systems.
• Don’t sacrifice beauty for efficiency. Windows should be beautiful, functional, durable and energy efficient.
• Add window treatments. Certain window treatments also can help maintain comfortable temperatures in a home.
• Consult an expert. Homeowners should speak with a professional when selecting windows,to explore and identify solutions for their home and climate.
REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary.
Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.
CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE
(NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help theseindividualsreducetheirriskofdevelopingsuchdangerousconditions.
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.
The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.
“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.
“IfyoususpectyouhaveAFib,meetwithyourdoctor.AFibcanbemanaged, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor.
The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. To learn more, visit www.heart.org/afibawareness.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS
Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda CharlesGoals for 2023
I didn’t rush to create my goals for 2023, but the time has come ...
One year ago I made two goals: to buy weekly food donation cards at the grocery store to give to the food bank and to continue to pick up weekly groceries for three elderly neighbors. I made it three-quarters of the year on both of those.
Food prices just got too high for me to continue to buy a donation card each week. And picking up groceries for the three elderly ladies was no longer necessary once I introduced them to the food bank. Now I have new goals for 2023.
I’m going to continue with “Growing Stronger,” the free 126-page strength-training book for seniors on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (cdc.gov). I’ve reprinted new, blank pages for the charts, such as Long-Term Personal Goals and How Fit and Strong Are You Now? I’m just about ready to buy a pair of slightly heavier hand weights. If you decide to start the “Growing Stronger” strength program, ask your doctor rst if it’s appropriate for you. And remember: Start slowly, with low weights.
In the tech category, my goal is to successfully set up a personal WiFi hotspot. (A hotspot is letting your phone’s cellular service serve as Wi-Fi.) is desire comes a er a day with no power during a storm. No power meant no computer, but I did have cellphone service. Had I been able to set up a hotspot, I would have been able to access the internet on my tablet. If you decide to try this, be mindful of security.
As a nal goal for the year, I’m going to have a banana each and every day. Whether it’s sliced over cereal or put in a smoothie, I’ll get my ber, magnesium, potassium and vitamins B6 and C ... like it or not.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day
In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include:
• Taking the stairs
• Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work
• Getting off the bus or subway one stop early
• Parking in the farthest space from the door
• Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam MazzottaDo Cats Really Need Potty Training?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read with interest your recent column about cats using shop towels rather than kitty litter to do their business. How did their owner manage to train the cats to use the towels and switch from litter? And why not just let a cat do its business outside?
-- Caroline D., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR CAROLINE: Compared with dogs, cats are usually easy to potty train (or litter train) because they have very speci c potty behaviors. Cats instinctively bury their poop to hide their scent from potential predators -- hence the use of cat litter, which also absorbs urine well and masks the scent for a few days.
I’m not sure how the reader did it, but one way to switch a cat from litter box to a pad is to place the new pad and tray next to the old litter box so that a cat can sni around it, check it out and become familiar with it. A er a day or two, remove the litter box and put the pad in its place. Many cats will get the message right away. Others might hunt around for their box; if you notice this, place them gently on the pad to help them make the connection.
I’m not a big fan of letting indoor cats go outside to do their business. ey’ll o en head straight for the nearest ower bed, leaving a surprise that I’m personally not thrilled about. ey also are at risk in the outdoors, from coyotes, turkeys (yes, turkeys in the Northeast), cars and other cats. It’s better to provide a safe spot indoors with a clean litter box.

INFLAMMATION
Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms.
Whileinflammationisprotectiveby nature, sometimesaninflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering.
While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer
• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Immunological Therapy Reasonable for Case of Lymphoma
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with stage 3A follicular lymphoma. It was discovered on a CAT scan when I went to the ER for diverticulitis. I have no symptoms. The doctor did a biopsy to confirm, and I had a PET scan as well. I feel good otherwise. I am only on blood pressure and cholesterol medications. My oncologist is recommending low-dose chemotherapy. I am conflicted. At my age, what should I do? -- L.H.
ANSWER: There are many types of lymphomas (which are a type of cancer of blood cells), but lymphomas are predominantly in the lymph nodes. Follicular lymphoma is an “indolent” type of lymphoma, meaning it is very slow-growing, but unfortunately often uncurable. People with no symptoms from follicular lymphoma and who are stage 1, 2 or 3A tend to have a long time before they have progression of the disease to the point of having symptoms. Depending on other characteristics, that time ranges from three to seven years. Choosing to hold off on treatment is definitely a reasonable option for a person in your situation. However, your oncologist knows much more about your disease than I do, such as the extent of tumor in the abdomen, the molecular markers of the tumor, and additional blood results. When an oncologist suggests treatment, I would listen carefully. One treatment that your oncologist might be considering is immunological therapy such as rituximab. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, rituximab alone is pretty nontoxic and can delay the progression of the disease. A large study suggested improvement in the quality of life with rituximab. Usually, rituximab is given once a week for four doses, but some oncologists repeat the four doses every two months. If I had a patient in your situation, I would say holding off on treatment would be reasonable given your age and lack of symptoms, but a trial of the rituximab (if that is what the oncologist is contemplating) would also be a reasonable choice. If you had serious side effects to the treatment, I would recommend against further doses.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.
GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW
One of the earliest known confirmed hats was worn by a bronze-aged man nicknamed Otzi, whose body was found frozen in a mountain between Austria and Italy, where he had been since around 3250 BCE. He was discovered wearing a bearskin cap with a chinstrap made of several hides stitched together, resembling a Russian fur hat.
RAVES
Thank you for paying for our drinks and donuts! Thank you to the young lady in the white SUV who paid for our order at DD in Batavia! It's funny because my husband and I were talking about paying for the people behind us and so we did! Thanks again, it’s greatly appreciated!
KUDOS, Ms.Savage
I read in a recent education newsletter that Ms. Valerie Savage, from the Wheatland-Chili Central School District, was named 2022 New York State Art Teacher of the Year! What an honor when you consider that this is considered a small school district when compared to all the school districts in the state. As a former educator and resident of Wheatland, I am so proud and happy for her recognition! Keep up the great works!
David Thomas, ChurchvilleThank you!
I would like to thank all who helped us at Lima Manor during the wind storm on December 23rd. We were without heat and lights for 24 hours. The Lima Fire Dept. came to take anyone who wanted to go to the warming room at the fire station where breakfast and lunch were served. Some of us stayed in our apartments, and the food was brought to us. Thank you to all the helpers.

Move over
Slower traffic “stay right” doesn’t mean only on Thruways. Every day on divided 4 lane roads you have those who drive in the left lane oblivious to others. Every weekday around 3pm I see the same school bus doing 45 in a 55 zone in the left lane. I’m not exaggerating. Roughly 7 miles between towns. Cars and trucks get congested while trying to get past him. Some beep horns and make hand gestures, yet he refuses to move over. Yes, it does create possible road rage and safety issues. Move over!
Sky High Airline Profits
The airlines do not give refunds on unused tickets, involuntarily downgrade seats with no refunds, received $50 billion of taxpayer $ during Covid, and are now posting record quarter profits. How does the airline industry get away with these tactics? No other companies can refuse to give refunds and receive that much in government aid.
Regarding the Dec. 30th “Inconsiderate Deer Hunters” Rant.
Please don’t group all hunters as being inconsiderate. I do tons of hiking, both on local trails and St. Regis Wildness Area up north. I have seen lots of wrappers, trash, dog and horse “waste”, etc... Should I group all hikers as inconsiderate? Also, some of these trails have signs saying no horses, but there is the manure (evidence). What about ATV riders that are not supposed to be on these trails? Are all of them bad? Wildlife have it tougher than us, they eat wherever they can find their next meal, whatever it is. Overall I agree with you that gut piles/carcasses are unsightly and unpleasant, so is unnatural trash, dog and horse manure left by hikers. Let’s agree not to “group” various users all as guilty as all groups have some bad apples (not that apples are bad).

WRITING YOUR OWN LAST WILL & TESTAMENT
Kathryn Danelle Culbertson
May 16, 1970 – December 13, 2022
Our heartfelt thanks go to all those friends and family who have touched our lives with the passing of our beloved daughter Kathryn.
e outpouring of love and kindness was truly appreciated. It helps to know so many people cared about our truly special child.
Although it is often preferable to consult with a local estateplanning attorney who understands the language and legalities surrounding a will, it is also possible to write a will yourself. There are forms that can be purchased from office-supply stores, or a will can be prepared online by answering questions and then generating a form to print. The will also can be typed or handwritten. Handwritten wills are called holographic wills and may not be recognized unless written during an emergency situation, such as a fatal illness.
Laws regarding wills vary based on where you live. Therefore, learn the legalities before preparing a will so you will have a document that holds up in a court of law and can be executed to your desires.

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.
REFUGE AND RESOURCES PROVIDED AT ALL BABIES CHERISHED
is nonpro t organization is a bright light in the Batavia community. Director Sue Sherman said, “ ere is no judgment or condemnation when you walk into the center. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past, we are here to give you a brighter future.”
What makes ABC unique? It is Christian based. Christ is the center of their operations. You don’t have to be a believer to get help. You are lovingly welcomed and accepted at this center. Many don’t know the meaning of true love. All Babies Cherished serves from the heart. ey are there during hardships. Regardless of current situations, they want everyone to know that God has a plan for your life to prosper you and give you hope.
Sherman said the moms enjoy learning. Most of them come in feeling unworthy, shameful, guilty, and hopeless.
Let’s start at the very beginning with ABC - All Babies Cherished. It’s a good place to start. ere is hope, love, and safety for all who enter. is pregnancy resource center provides needs for moms, expectant mothers, fathers, and their children. Help is available to parents and children of all ages.
We are all wonderfully made. ere is a purpose for every life. When di cult and unexpected times happen, do not fear. You are not alone. is divine mission has been operating for over 27 years in Batavia, NY. All their funding comes from donations.
All Babies Cherished continues to add value to the community by encouraging parents to live healthy, happy lives. How do they do that?
Parenting classes are provided. e students enjoy these classes and are hungry to learn. When parents attend these classes, they get the items they need for their children. ese items may include clothing, cribs, high chairs, diapers, baby wipes, and car seats. Over 20,000 items a year are given away free of charge.
All Babies Cherished advocates throughout the community for housing, food stamps, and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). Help lling out applications is provided so that parents get needed resources.
Housing assistance is also desperately needed in Batavia for these families. irty- ve percent of the moms and expectant moms that come into the center are homeless, couch hopping with young children in tow, or staying in hotels.
A house was donated to All Babies Cherished. ey are working on getting it ready this year. It will be a temporary shelter for programming, classes, and those needing their GED. is environment will equip these parents to be self-su cient.
e team at All Babies Cherished edify and empower these families. When they leave, they have what they need, are con dent, and know they are loved. Laughter and fun are included, especially at classes and events. Cooking classes produce tasty dishes. Painting night brings out creativity.
Yearly events include a Basket Ra e in April, a 5K race on the rst Saturday in June, a Banquet in September, and a vendor festival in the fall.
ABC gives in many ways. e ways you can give to All Babies Cherished are with a nancial donation, material items, volunteering, telling a friend, and praying. Open your heart and share the message.

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation.
Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.
The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.
Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
