Fai rport Community Helps Durf’s Win Pandemic Relief BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

f you live in the Fairport area, then you have probably eaten at Durf’s. This popular, local family restaurant has been cooking breakfast and lunch for Fairport families for over 40 years. Kathy Lloyd is the proud 2nd generation owner of Durf’s, family owned and operated since 1976. Leading a true community institution, Lloyd likely not only knows your name, but she may also be cooking your order before you have even been seated! When the effects of pandemic shutdowns and limitations threatened to close the doors of this beloved local eatery for good, the Fairport community knew they had to do something about it. Kathy Lloyd was very concerned that Durf’s may not be able to weather takeout only and reduced capacity dining. The thought of permanently closing broke her heart. “My dad started our restaurant as just a counter around the cookline at Seabreeze,” she shared, noting that her father, who suffered a serious stroke at the beginning of 2020, decided to move Durf’s to Fairport in 1978. “My family still lives here; Fairport people are my family.” “The pandemic changed everything,” she continued. “We had to learn how to operate our restaurant as a high-volume takeout only. It was a whole different world! Then, when we were allowed to have limited dine-in, it became even more of a challenge.” The Fairport community, however, was not about to let Durf’s go without a fight. “They have rallied around us every time we struggled,” shared Lloyd. “They have always been there for us. They comment encouraging words on social media. They would support us at their comfort level, whether dine-in or takeout. A customer even started a GoFundMe page for us. It’s hard to put the huge amount of support we have received into words.”

me because she needed my information and participation. I didn’t know we had won though. She drove all the way to my home with the owner of Barstool Sports on video chat to record him telling me we won!” Lloyd, who describes herself as “a kind of shy person,” was overwhelmed with Durf ’s Family Restaurant, Fairport gratitude. “I was just in tears and humbled, completely humbled,” she said. “Barstool Sports is going to pay our restaurant’s lease until COVID-19 is over and our business is able to return to regular operation. The community, all of their support and joy for us, it is just amazing.” Well-aware of the struggle many businesses are still facing, Lloyd offers these words of encouragement: “We have to go day by day,” she said. “We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this.”

“We also have to support each other in any way we can. Don’t stop fighting. Keep looking for ways to get through this!”

“I always knew my family - Kathy Lloyd restaurant was a very special place,” she added. “I didn’t realize just how big our support was, and I am so humbled by it. Our customers are a part of our family. We know many of them by name. It has been an honor to carry on my dad’s legacy. I can only offer my thanks and appreciation to Barstool Sports, my family, and our Fairport community.” The Durfee Family (Kathy Lloyd third from left)

Then, during the handful of days between the time when this writer requested an interview with Lloyd and the day we actually spoke, something incredible happened. Lloyd’s niece, Daphne Croop, who in the family tradition had also worked at Durf’s, entered the family restaurant in a contest run by BarstoolSports.com. “She took the initiative to write a story and send it in,” explained Lloyd. “She then had 24 hours to put together a video of video clips from the community in support of Durf’s and send it in.” The response Croop received was overwhelming. “Daphne reached out to the Fairport community, and they sent her so many clips she couldn’t even use them all!” exclaimed Lloyd. “We won! My niece was trying to keep this a secret to surprise me, but she had to tell

But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

The descendants of Noah were beginning to tread in the footsteps of the antediluvians. They became ambitious of making “a name” for themselves, irrespective of the name of the Lord. This, their way, was their folly; yet their posterity approved their endeavor. Idolatry was beginning to prevail; and they proceeded to build a city, and a tower, whose top should reach to heaven, in honor of their god. But the Lord came down and put a stop to their enterprise, by confounding their language, and scattering them abroad over the earth (Gen. 11:9). Noah had lived 292 years after the flood, when three sons were born to Terah, a descendant of Shem, Terah being 70 years old. Shem was a worshipper of the true God, whom Noah styled, “the Lord God of Shem” (Gen. 9:26). Terah, however, seems to have departed from the simplicity of the truth; and was, probably, engaged in the mad scheme of making “a name” for the sons of men in the land of Shinar. But that undertaking being interrupted, it is probable, he migrated from Babel, the name of the city they were building, in a northerly direction. Be this as it may, we find him in Chaldea at a place called Ur (Gen. 11:28; Josh. 24:2; Gen. 15:7; Acts 7:2-3). At this place, eastward of “the great river Euphrates” Abram, Nahor, and Haran, were born to Terah. They lived there many years, serving the gods of Shinar. The idolatry of Terah’s family appears from the testimony of God Himself, who said to Israel, “Your fathers dwell on the other side of the flood (the Euphrates) in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.” When Joshua reported this to the people, he admonished them, saying, “put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt, and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil to you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and His voice will we obey” (Josh. 24:14-15, 24). While Terah’s family dwelt in Ur of the Chaldees, the Lord appeared to them, and said to Abram, “Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred and come into the land which I shall show Page 17 LIVINGSTON EDITION FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2021 ●

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Livingston Glasses Eye Care fogging up?

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.

We have a great solution available for purchase

Dr. Jennifer J. Dotterweich Optometrist

Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Emergency Help for Hungry Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: So many people are out of work right now, and there is little to no assistance available to them just to pay rent, much less buy food for themselves. I am wondering, how will people be able to feed their pets in this desperate situation? -- Jamie G., Atlanta DEAR JAMIE: One of the bright spots in this pandemic is the way that individuals have responded to help each other and fill the needs of tens of thousands -- maybe millions -- of pets. Shelters in many parts of the country have opened or expanded food pantries for pets to help owners keep their dogs and cats healthy and fed. Napa County, California, for example, transformed two empty shipping containers into a community pet pantry offering free supplies this summer. (Search for “Napa County’s new pet pantry” to learn more.) In Tuscon, Cody’s Friends, a charity started in 2010 by a 10-year-old boy, has seen a huge surge of demand for pet food and is distributing to area shelters and clinics as fast as possible (https://codysfriends.org). And in North Carolina, the Davidson County Animal Alliance extended its holiday pet food collection drive because there was so much need. If you are struggling to pay for pet food for any reason, contact your local shelter first and ask if there is a pet food program available. You may not be able to pick up food directly from a shelter; it may be distributed at a different location. Contact local food banks, churches and municipal offices. And of course, search online or on Facebook for these services as well. Also, if you’ve been waiting to donate food, pet supplies or cash to a local shelter or charity, now is your moment to shine. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The only prescription medication I take is for dry eyes. I recently visited my new primary physician for the first time, and she had me do a breathing test, where I exhaled into a tube to measure airflow. I was told to breathe deeply and exhale completely into the tube three times in succession. It took less than a minute to complete. It is apparently a routine test she orders for new patients. She then told me I have COPD, on the basis of that test alone. She asked if I had ever smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke. That was her only question -coughing or shortness of breath was never mentioned. I have never smoked, but my father was a smoker when I was growing up. I actually do have a slightly productive cough most mornings. I probably walk about 10 miles a week, and I do notice some shortness of breath on long uphill sections, though I can walk briskly in level areas for miles with no problem. She said it is not advanced enough to require an inhaler at this time. I am bothered by this very easy “diagnosis” on the basis of one simple test. I wonder if I should ask to be referred to a pulmonologist for a more thorough evaluation. -- O.P. ANSWER: The test your doctor performed is called office spirometry, and it is useful for monitoring known pulmonary diseases, especially COPD and asthma. However, by itself, it is inadequate to make the diagnosis of COPD, which I am not sure you have. The diagnosis of COPD is made in people with persistent respiratory symptoms, usually shortness of breath or coughing. Spirometry will usually show obstruction to airflow. Formal pulmonary function testing, which is an extensive process taking an hour or so with a skilled and experienced technician, is ideal for determining severity. The problem with getting a breathing test in someone who has no significant symptoms is that you can find someone whose test results are at or just below the lower limit of normal, and the diagnosis is unclear. The prognosis for people with mild airway obstruction but with no symptoms of COPD is much better than for people with COPD and who continue to smoke. For this reason, using spirometry as a screening test for everyone is not recommended. Without knowing the exact results of your spirometry, I suspect you do not have COPD, given your absence of smoking and your extremely mild symptoms. A comprehensive exam by a pulmonologist would be definitive and may help you be less anxious about the results you have now.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds

RESOLVE TO REDUCE SCREEN TIME Keep a journal. A journal can help men and women log their screen time over the course of a few weeks. Jot down time spent watching TV, using a computer, using mobile devices, or playing video games. Some people may be surprised to learn just how much time they’re spending staring at screens, and that realization may be just what they need to make changes.

Magic Maze

In an effort to add some creativity to traditional fundraisers, many charitable groups have begun to rely on gift auctions. Gift auctions, sometimes referred to as a “tricky tray,” ask participants to silently bid on various prizes. Each prize is put on display and participants go around and place pre-purchased raffle tickets into bowls or bags beside the prizes. After bidding has concluded, an emcee will select a winning ticket from each collection of entries and read out the winner’s name or ticket number. Depending on how many prizes are available, gift auctions provide hours of fun.

Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

In Most Loving Remembrance You gotta let your Soul Shine, it’s better than Sunshine, It’s better than Moonshine, it’s darned sure better than Rain, You gotta let your Soul Shine, Shine till the Break Of Day (from Soul Shine by Warren Haynes)

Siste mos dea, God only knows how much I am going to miss you. Bringing so much Joy to the Table of Life. You were the big sister who tried to teach me how to pronounce the word “vinegar;” you were always eating salads with oil & vinegar on them. Indeed, my sister was the slender and very pretty red-haired 1950s chick serving coffee, soda & sandwiches at the Mt. Morris diner on Main St. in Mt. Morris. The handsome guys were attracted to you, I remember. And one of your favorite foods was dill pickles, of all things! When you were a teenager, I could always find Hit Parade Magazine in your room; and I liked reading it. I would seek out the lyrics for all those songs we heard on the radio. You always had the radio on; and you loved dancing. Sweet Thing, everyone in town knew you for your good Cheer and Smiling Laughter. When our Mom passed away, the world turned upside down. But you were a Blessing for me and I thank you. You helped me navigate through life’s challenges, as I was only 11 years old. You bought me a bicycle and helped me with “girlie” issues. I was always speaking of “my sister this and my sister that.” I became your babysitter for your kids; and loved every minute of it. You worked in the Vending Machine Business for quite some time; and it was such an adventure. You were always on the go and always on the move. Sometimes you took me with you as you did the vending route. How exciting that was! You took me and my boyfriend to be on TV on the Buffalo “American Bandstand” when we won a dance contest; you loved sharing in our music fun. You guys taught me how to bowl; and I absolutely thrived being with you and sharing that fun time with you. You gave me a high school graduation party. I remember in your Wadsworth house that you bought a chord organ and had it in your living room; I couldn’t wait to sit down and play it when I came over. You bought the Beatles’ first album and Bob Dylan’s first album. Your house(s) were warm and inviting. Your Leicester house was a hub of neighbors for coffee and your kids’ friends. I enjoyed all that. You always gave me Shelter in the Storm; thank you so much, Annie. I cherish those times.

When I became a mother, you were a wonderful aunt to my son Deryck. He thought the world of you through his whole life. Sister Dear, what a Blessing you were to me when Deryck left this World. You were such a comfort to me, always checking up on me to make sure I was doing okay; helping me to heal. And it was your grief, too, because you and Deryck were good personal buddies, meeting in downtown Geneseo for coffee all the time and having great conversation and companionship. He loved your company. The two of you would sit for hours with the Coffee Shop crew, exchanging stories of the day. I am so Blessed that you were such an important part of Deryck’s life. I will always, always be grateful for that. You and I had some amazing and complex conversations about all the trials and tribulations of our Life Journey; about our Family Memories. We had many a late-night telephone chat; being night owls, drinking our coffee and talking our pleasure... talking our blues. That was special, in the clarity of the evening. Thank you for helping me pack up the kitchen when we made a big house move; so much work. When we went to Toronto to a Tina Turner Concert, it was such a fun weekend; we shared a lot of excitement in the City. Annie, you had the greatest sense of adventure! You loved life to the fullest. When you told me you were going to take a Motorcycle Cruise to Florida with your boyfriend; I thought...”leave it to my sister to plan a trip like that.” There is no Soul that could ever take your place; you were one of a Kind in God’s hand of Cards. If you have a chance and can find a way, please come to visit me. The doorway to my Dream World is always open for you. I know you’ll be sharing Tea & Coffee with Mom, Boots and Deryck on the Other Side. And my Kitties are all around the Heavenly Kitchen Table with you guys. One day we’ll all be there together. May the beautiful Music of Heaven fill Your Spirit with abundant Joy.

Tips on planning a memorial service • Set the date and time. Memorial services should be planned in consideration of any family members who have traveled from out of town. Set a date close enough to the funeral or anniversary event that visiting friends and family can attend. •␣Choose a location. Arrange a memorial service at a location that is large enough to accommodate the number of people you’ve invited. Know how many chairs you need, tables for food and arrangements and a podium for a guestbook. •␣Compile a guest list and send out the invitations. Stay organized when planning a memorial service by making a list of all friends and loved ones of the deceased for sending out invitations. •␣Personalize decorations and music. Make the memorial service a reflection of the person whose memory you’re honoring by choosing decorations and music the individual would have liked. Use floral arrangements with the person’s favorite flowers or colors and compile a play list of favorite songs or types of music to be played throughout the service. •␣Get input from loved ones. Ask friends and family members of the deceased individual for input about special touches that will best help remember their loved one. •␣Arrange for guest speakers. A key component of many memorial services is having a series of guest speakers who can provide their personal perspective on the deceased person’s life and the legacy being left behind. Thank You!

The hope that a new year can bring is with us as we share our gratitude and appreciation to our loving family, wonderful friends and compassionate healthcare workers who supported our brave mom, Karen Arrigenna, prior to her passing on December 22nd. Thank you to the staff of Livingston County Hospice for your kind ways, giving mom choice and dignity. We appreciate Jeff Deragon and Jim Murray, from the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, for your understanding and flexibility as we honor our mom during these unprecedented times. Mom’s faith was paramount throughout her life and we thank Father Bernard Dan, Father Michael Fowler, soloist Katharina Nieves, and organist Madonna Cintineo for celebrating mom’s life with the same grace and reverence she possessed all her life.

Our mom openly expressed her gratefulness for the generosity, care and friendship she received which were treasures to her days and nights. Notes, cards and pictures filled her home. To her extra special nieces and nephews... your time, attention and love were evident each day, in a variety of ways. We share our heartfelt thanks to you. Mom was blessed with siblings who frequently checked in with her, offered a listening ear, an encouraging word and shared uplifting conversations and laughter, especially on Wednesdays during lunch visits. These bonds of affection were priceless to her and gave her strength. We hope your hearts are filled with the same love you gave to her, and us. As we navigate the days ahead, we carry the lessons of mom’s grace and character with us. We love and miss you, Mom... and Dad, too. We find comfort and peace knowing you’re together again. With our sincerest thanks, The Arrigenna Family ~ Jim, Julie and Dave, Chris and Larry, Patti, Dan and family, Jackie, Jack and family.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. Page 30

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. To remove the burden and stress associated with funeral planning, many adults preplan their funerals. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop.

Congratulations!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York * If your animals try to get out when you go into or out of the house, keep some toys or treats in your pocket or near the door to throw across the room, giving you a few seconds to slip in or out.
