Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Familiar faces: Some diners enjoy being a “regular” at their favorite local restaurants. Local dining spots also become gathering locations for residents in the know, instead of passing-through tourists or commuters.
DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
OPEN for Indoor Dining Reservations are recommended.

Thank you, kind sir Imagine my surprise! The man that I thought was the store manager or owner went to get me a product I needed that wasn’t on the shelf. When he got back to me with it, I thanked him and went to the store cashier to pay for it. The cashier told me the other man already paid for it. Come to find out, the man wasn’t the store manager or owner. He was another customer! I tried to go thank him, but he was long gone. Not only had he paid for it, but apparently, he went in his own car to another store to buy it! Wow! What great kindness to experience in the holiday season! Thank you, kind sir! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! - Signed, an Old Woman in Need
Delivery Drivers Move out of the way of faster, vehicles on the roads. You’re causing more harm than good by holding everybody up! Move over or find a different sightseeing route. Christmas trees Are you tired of overpaying for your Christmas tree? $50 for a 6-foot tree? That’s over $8 a foot. Are you kidding me? I hear for some places its more than that. Ridiculous! Thank you, sisters I want to thank my sisters in Christ for the “gifts” from the bottom of my heart. You brought tears to my eyes and emphasized what I’ve known all along. God is good. Thanks again. Peace & Happiness in the New Year to you all. Community Generosity The Gilbert family on North St. in Caledonia would like to give a massive thank you this Holiday Season. There were many factors this year that caused our family to struggle, and although we did the best we could, of course, it was still hard. Our community came together like nothing I have ever seen before in order to ensure we had an amazing Christmas. I would
accommodate a 6-7-foot tree. A tree that size should be no more than $45, especially if you were the one to saw it down. I’m a person that would never get a fake tree. I have always had real trees. So, if you think the Christmas tree, you’re buying is too expensive, don’t be too timid to say something about it. If you don’t, next year the same size tree will cost you more. Learn how to treat others You just have love people who don’t have one ounce of common decency who then boohoo about people not having any respect for anyone. They are rude and obnoxious. The only vocabulary they know only consists of fourletter words, added with gestures that really make them appear to have lost all of their marbles. They lack good manners, refinement, and grace. They are the epitome of uncouth. They then complain

like to thank Focus on the Children: you are such caring and hardworking people that go above and beyond for those in need. To everyone at Cooper Vision that bought gifts for a family (that you did not know) during a struggling world right now: I could never thank you enough. Also, to Joan Marie, the Angry Rooster, and everyone in Caledonia that assisted with the gifting tree: thank you! This is a Christmas we will never forget.
Kudos Livingston County Department of Health Hats off to the Livingston County Department of Health! On December 12th, the Health Department held a ‘drive thru COVID-19 test site,” which my husband and I attended. The system they established was efficient and successful and ran like a ‘well-oiled machine.’ Staff and all who worked the event were professional, pleasant, competent, and caring. Before we arrived back at our home, we received a call to report that our tests were negative! Thank you! -J & B
about how people have no respect for one another. Well, they need to respect others around them. Ever heard “practice what you preach?” They are very bad examples for young ones. They should be ashamed of themselves, but they don’t see that they are really hurting themselves in the long run. Please slow down Thanks go out to the Livingston County Highway Department for resurfacing our county road this summer. They did a great job, but it has now become somewhat of a speedway. It seems like everyone is in quite a hurry, and unfortunately, a few days ago, our beloved family cat was hit and killed near our home.... not saying that speed was a factor but it could have been. Please slow down on our country roads. Merry Christmas to all and hoping that 2021 will be a much better year for all of us.

No fan attendance Fans in the stands again, but there is a catch. Only about 7,000 fans will be allowed to attend the Bills playoff home game in a stadium that can hold about 68,000. This is actually insulting. No fans should attend the games until that stadium is full to capacity.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

TURN YOUR HOME INTO THE ULTIMATE
Staycation Destination While vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town -- and getting there – can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it:
Upgrade Bedding: Give your bedroom
a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors intervene.
Create a Spa-Like Bathroom: Find your
bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation -- think earthy tones, blues and greens, then add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer.
Add Backyard Touches: Show your
backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book.
Explore Financing Options: When it comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longerterm promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home. Make “getting away from it all” as simple as taking a bath or enjoying a blockbuster from the comfort of home. With smart renovation strategies, you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you want and need to truly relax. (StatePoint)

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Navigation system: Many vehicles are now equipped with built-in navigation systems. But drivers whose vehicles are older or not equipped with such technology should consider purchasing one before embarking on trips. Though some travelers may feel navigation systems go against the adventurous spirit of road trips, it’s easy to get lost on the open road, especially in an era when many people have grown accustomed to roundthe-clock access to information, including maps, on their smartphones. Even if you have no set itinerary in mind, a navigation system can ensure you spend more time enjoying the open road and less time trying to figure out just where you are at any given moment.

The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store. AUTOMOTIVE

Happy New Year! 5 Pandemic Habits Worth Saving
2020
was an understatedly difficult year, and many of us were not sorry to see it go. The pandemic changed the way we work, the way we spend our leisure time, the way we connect with our loved ones and much more. While the majority will likely be happy to leave those changes behind, there are at least a handful of new habits worth holding on to.
#1: Spending more time with family The pandemic created a new era of “family togetherness” thanks to a variety of social distancing and COVID-19 prevention efforts including schools shutting down and parents working from home. While it is unfortunate that social activities, in school attendance, sporting events and other activities often had to be postponed, one silver lining has been the dramatic uptick in time spent together, spouse to spouse, parent to child. A wealth of fun ideas – including those on our Explore page – ranged from outdoor options to reading list to a variety of games; however, one of the most interesting and modern offers was virtual tours and trips. Anyone with internet access was all it took to enjoy a wide variety of virtual experiences from the comfort of one’s couch, including touring national parks, world famous museums, underwater dives, and much more. As things hopefully begin to return to “normal” this year, consider resisting the temptation to refill your schedule. Instead, continue 2020ís family time trend, and hopefully soon, visit in person some of the places you have explored virtually.
#2: Valuing extended family & friends Without question, one of the hardest parts of the pandemic has been being unable to spend time with all of our loved ones, particularly extended and elderly family members. Before the pandemic, how many of us took for granted that we could visit our loved ones whenever we wished? Suddenly, elderly relatives were quarantining in their homes or in nursing homes, unable to see visitors except across windowpanes. For those who faithfully visit family, this has been a painful adjustment. Sadly, the old adage, You never know what you have until it is gone, has seldom been more deeply felt. Hopefully, this time apart has given many of us a new appreciation for spending time with our extended and elderly family members and will visit them often when it is safe to do so.
#3: More time in the great outdoors As many avenues of recreation closed or became very limited, people found themselves heading outdoors. One of the only places that didn’t close were nature areas. Parks were usually open for hiking, recording a definite increase in visitors. Thankfully, the Genesee River Valley is blessed with several parks, trails, forests, wilderness areas, campgrounds, lakes, rivers, and creeks, making it perfect for outdoor recreation. Aside from the obvious health benefits during a pandemic, spending time outside in nature has a variety of everyday health benefits. Researchers have linked exposure to greenspace with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. Additionally, time spent in nature can improve mood; increase one’s ability to focus, even among children diagnosed with ADHD; accelerate recovery from injury or illness; and improve sleep. With such holistic benefits, this is one habit that should definitely continue.

#4: Continued hand washing and sanitizing Incredibly simple, it is surprising how much the pandemic increased awareness and mindfulness regarding these simple habits. While sanitizing is a convenience many of us enjoy, handwashing is the real hero. In fact, the CDC notes that it is one of the best ways people can protect themselves and their families from getting sick. Interestingly, the CDC suggests that it is not particularly important whether the water is hot or cold or whether the soap is antibacterial or not (outside of professional health care settings). What is important is lather. Soap and water worked into a lather trap and remove germs and chemicals. When applied to hands before soap, water helps develop a better lather. A good lather forms pockets known as micelles that trap and remove germs, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds helps ensure that no germs are left behind. Even as vaccinations fuel hopes of quelling this pandemic, more mindful handwashing habits – the proverbial ounce of prevention – are worth carrying forward.
#5: Positive community connections All across our readership area, many inspiring people reached out and joined together to support their neighbors, local businesses, and communities. Even while social distancing, working from home, and remaining physically apart, communities came together. They created online pages and websites to continue to order from local restaurants. They shared which businesses were open, had curbside pick-up available and more. They purchased gift cards for future use at independent businesses they love just to ensure they remained open. They also looked after each other. They went shopping for elderly neighbors. They reached out with food and free and low-cost meals for those in need, out of work, or faced with fewer hours. They connected on social media networks to encourage one another to be strong, made signs to encourage their communities, raised money for backpack programs, holiday programs, and simply let others know they were available if needed, showing incredible solidarity. This unity, support, and resurgence of respect for teachers, medical workers and other service professionals should by all means continue into the new year and beyond.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills. “Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Raynaud’s Patient: Can Viagra Help Cold Fingers ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have scleroderma with Raynaud’s phenomenon, and friends and family members have told me that I might get help from Viagra. Frankly, I hadn’t read or heard that from either my rheumatologists or dermatologists. I already tried a short course of nifedipine over a decade ago (it just gave me a headache), so I just stick with mechanical means to keep my hands warm in winter and, maybe surprisingly to some, in summer. Believe me, air-conditioned grocery stores are torture from April to October. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: Raynaud’s phenomenon is an excessive response of the blood vessels in the skin to changes in temperature, and sometimes to emotional stress. While most people will get cold hands and feet when it is cold, a person with Raynaud’s can get a drastic response, even to air conditioning or freezer sections of grocery stores. The skin will turn white and then blue, then quite red on being rewarmed. Not everybody goes through all three colors, however. Raynaud’s can exist by itself, but is often seen in the presence of autoimmune conditions, such as the systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) you have. Treatment for Raynaud’s is generally the same with or without other conditions. Everybody with Raynaud’s should quit smoking and avoid medications that can trigger an attack (over-the-counter cold and flu remedies are the most common). The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the temperature changes wherever possible, but as you point out clearly, it’s almost impossible to do so completely. Putting your hand in a refrigerator or holding a cold drink can trigger an attack. Many people with Raynaud’s learn to keep gloves with them all the time and dress their entire body warmly. An attack can sometimes be aborted by rubbing hands in warm water or getting them into a warm place. When medication treatment is necessary, a calcium channel blocker like nifedipine is often the first choice. Headache and dizziness can limit effectiveness of this treatment. Studies have shown these medications can cut the attacks by about 50%. Sildenafil (Viagra) has been used in people with Raynaud’s, and is about as effective as calcium channel blockers. However, for people with scleroderma, ulcers and Raynaud’s, sildenafil has been shown in small trials to be very effective.
Caring for you and the community since 2001.

PREPARE YOUR FIREPLACE OR STOVE FOR WINTER Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

NOW HERE'S A TIP
Excerpt from
By JoAnn Derson
Elpis Israel
* Purchase New Year’s celebration items that are on sale in January if you have a graduating senior in 2021. You can get all kinds of items for a fraction of the price, and you will be ready with all the 2021 things you need!
by John Thomas The study of the promise unconnected with the study of the fathers is impossible. Those who are ignorant of the biographies of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, must be ignorant of the gospel; for these patriarchs were the depositories of the promises (Her 11:17), which constitute the gospel hope; and of them, Abraham is especially designated as the holder of the promises (Heb. 7:6). It is for this reason, that a man must become of Abraham’s seed by adoption through Jesus Christ. Unless a son of Abraham by a like faith and disposition with him, neither Jew nor Gentile, can share in Abraham’s estate. It is only Abraham’s spiritual family that can divide with him the promises he holds. God has made him the spiritual father of mankind; and the Lord Jesus, the elder brother of the family. If, therefore, a man become a brother of Jesus, he at the same time becomes a son of Abraham; for Jesus is Abraham’s seed, and was in the loins of Isaac, when Abraham offered his only son, and received him from the dead again, in a figure. If the reader understand this matter, he will fully comprehend the meaning of the apostle’s saying, that believers “are all the children of God (being Abraham’s) by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. And if Christ’s THEN Abraham’s seed, and HEIRS according to the promise” (Gal: 3:26-29).
* Got a neckache? Grab a pair of long socks, fill each with 2 cups of uncooked white rice and a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil. Knot the sock tightly to seal. Microwave for up to 2 minutes, and test temperature before draping it over your shoulders to apply heat to sore muscles. It’s so nice, especially when you’re laying down. * J.P. in New Jersey advises that instead of using candles during a power outage -- it can be dangerous! -- try a batteryoperated lantern instead. You can even use solar garden lights in a vase. You’d be surprised how much they can light a room. * “To trick yourself into saving money, round up purchases when you enter them into your checkbook register.” -- S.W. in Arkansas
Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454
* “If you’re storing clothes in a storage tote, put a sheet of fabric softener in as well. It can help repel bugs and keep the fabrics smelling fresh.” -- M.W. in Iowa * “Spray nonwashable plush toys with dry shampoo to clean and freshen them. Rub vigorously with a terry cloth to remove any extra residue and fluff up!” -- P.H. in Pennsylvania
POINTERS ON MOVING TO A NEW HOME BY RENTAL TRUCK (NAPSI)—Moving yourself to a new home by renting a truck can be easier than you may realize, if you heed these five facts and tips. • Know when to go. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. • Be up on your truck. Make sure you can find and understand all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, so you have to be extra vigilant. • Understand the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. • Know the “No-Zone.” Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. • Look into insurance. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: You can find further moving facts and tips at www.PenskeTruckRental.com and (800) GO-PENSKE.
SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.
Getty Images
Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

MEANS TO AN END “Affluence without simplicity is a giant trap. Every saint who ever lived, lived simply… not because he was holier but because he was smarter…”
~ Quoted in Christian Science Monitor
No matter how much material things we acquire, most of us want more. We can recite quite a list of things we think we’d enjoy having if only we could afford them. The world’s wealthiest people are the first to admit that money cannot buy happiness. The smartest people have learned that the mere accumulation of things will not bring lasting satisfaction. Why not be content to live as the smartest saints do… simply. We are always available to help in any way that is needed. We help individuals to make funeral arrangements both at time of need or well in advance of need. How can we help you?

Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home AVON • 226-2340
Before meeting with the funeral director to preplan a funeral, it is best to have a budget in mind. As with planning other life events, it is very important to have a good idea of how you want to allocate your funds. Funeral preplanning helps you prioritize your needs and desires. That way, you have a better idea of what you really want, and you can avoid making purchases that you don’t really need or want. Preplanning allows you the time to make considered choices. By carefully reviewing the costs associated with the most expensive items (such as caskets, grave markers, and urns) ahead of time, you can avail yourself of beautiful items that are reasonably priced. Preplanning funeral arrangements can take some of the logistical and financial stresses off of your family after your death, and ensure that you get the kind of funeral you want. If you choose burial, you need to purchase a burial plot or a spot in a mausoleum at a cemetery. If you choose cremation, you can decide what you want done with the cremated remains. If you have any questions about our funeral and memorial services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Lawrence E. Stevens (Pops) December 30, 2020
William Henry Reno January 2, 2021 Livonia, NY: Devoted family man William Henry Reno, 92, passed away at his home January 2, 2021 with his daughters by his side. Predeceased by his eternal companion, Virginia Nell Reno (Fulmer) and his daughter, Linda V. Ramirez, and his grandson, Adrian B. Ramirez. Cherished father to Vivian Fujimoto (Michael) and Amy Prehn; Grandfather to Gary Burns (Gillian), Grant Burns (Candi), Julie Huffman, Jordan Fujimoto, Taylor Fujimoto (Alyssa), Midori Goobie (Robert). Great grandpa to Lucas and Ollie Fujimoto and newest family member, Nelke Burns. Bill was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on February 5, 1928. He graduated Lowell High School in 1945 and earned a degree in accounting in 1953 from Bentley’s Business College. He also attended Northeastern University and Merrimack College. He enjoyed his long career of 47 years with the New England Electric Company. He started as a meter reader and then become an accountant in the finance department. He served in the Navy during the Korean War on the icebreaker Atka. While in the Navy he met his sweetheart at a YMCA dance in Charlestown, Mass. They married in 1953 and were together for 64 years. One of his proudest accomplishments was reconstructing his home in Grafton, Mass. Through expert workmanship and self-taught skills he made a beautiful custom-designed home for his family. He loved to garden ever since he had a summer job at a nearby farm as a boy. He instilled in his family a love of nature through camping trips, fishing, hiking and caving. He was a member of the Boston Grotto and explored many caves and caverns in the New England area and in the southern US. His love of learning was a great example to us and he was an avid reader. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-DaySaints, he has a testimony that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and has taught his family these truths. With abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ he will continue his journey with Him and his loved ones beyond the veil. We will gather as a family to honor his life, his example and his selfless service to each of us. He will be laid to rest next to his wife Virginia at 2pm on Friday, January 8th, at Union Cemetery, Big Tree Road, Livonia, NY. EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Hit the ground running. It’s tempting for recent grads to take the summer off and have a lax approach to job hunting after all of the hard work they put into their education. But recent grads can get a head start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.

Health Centers Care for Patients Regardless of Their Ability to Pay
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
RN Care Manager Clinical Patient Service Advocate
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A have a wiry little terrier named “Chip” who is well-behaved inside. However, when it’s time for his daily walk, he begins barking nonstop by the door. When I take him outside on the leash, he keeps barking, and pulls hard on the leash. So much so that he almost hurts himself when the collar digs into his neck. Then he’ll yelp, as if I had hurt him. It’s embarrassing to walk with this hyper, yelping little dog. How can I get him to calm down? -- Charity G., Albany, New York

Hyper, Yelping Terrier Is Handful During Walks
DEAR CHARITY: An energetic dog can be frustrating to handle, but don’t lose hope. You can work with Chip to improve his behavior. First, order Chip a properly sized halter online, and use this on walks. A halter will spread out the contact points across the stronger parts of his little body. This will prevent injury when Chip pulls against the leash. Halters also are much more comfortable; the uncomfortable collar may be stressing him out. I’d like you to look up a dog trainer in your area who specializes in small dogs, who can be little tornados on a good day. Many trainers are adapting their lessons to an online format, so you can meet with them at home over a conferencing app like Zoom or Google Meet. While you’re waiting for that first session, start working on reinforcing Chip’s basic behavioral training. Work with him at home on the commands “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” During walks, work with him on “heel,” “sit” and “stay.” These training sessions also will help Chip work off some of that energy, and he’ll be thrilled with all the attention he’s getting, too. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.
