* Home office motivation: Preplan your outfits for daily success. When it’s all too easy to roll out of bed and log on without a thought, it might help your productivity to prepare for the workday as you would have in the time of commutes and conferences. The right wardrobe choices can help you set the tone for the day.

Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

GARDENING IN AUTUMN

Peter Vonglis, Owner

Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully.

Vonglis Enterprises, LLC 4740 Darby Road, Avon, NY 14414 585-245-2609 pvonglis@vonglisent.com facebook.com/vonglisenterprises

A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

They had heard of it before as preached to Jews; but they heard it now for the first time, that “whosoever believed,” whether Jew or Gentile, should receive remission of sins through his name. Make fast snacks. Grilled cheese is not only a delicious comfort food that can be transformed into gourmet fare depending on the cheese used, but it’s also a relatively easy appetizer to make. Entrepreneurial Honeoye Falls-Lima Student to Compete in Televised National Competition BY AMANDA DUDEK

E

ntrepreneurship is alive and well in Lima thanks to Honeoye FallsLima Sophomore Brandon Russell. Brandon joined a branch of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) located in Canandaigua (YEAFLCC). On Saturday, October 17th, Brandon will compete with 37 other students from around the country to be named America’s next top teen entrepreneur and winner of the televised 12th Annual Young Entrepreneurs Academy Saunders Scholars Competition! In some ways, Brandon Russell is your typical teenager: he likes to skateboard and play video games and basketball. His favorite subject is social studies, and he has lived in Lima since his family moved there more than 10 years ago. Then last fall, Brandon joined the FLCC branch of YEA!, an entrepreneurship education program for students. Local business leaders support students as they design, pitch and launch their businesses, learning everything from design, market research and pitch to business plans, startup funds and websites. YEA! encourages young leaders to embrace the spirit of enterprise and take charge of their futures. Brandon Russell is doing just that.

“At first, I was really struggling to find a business idea,” said Brandon, who celebrated his 15th birthday earlier this month. “Then, my step-dad came home from work describing how he is continually fixing toilet handles because people kick them to avoid touching them. I thought, What if someone made an S hook that attaches to the handle? Then, you could simply step on it to flush. You wouldn’t have to touch it.” Billed as a way to help people not “Go viral,” Brandon calls his product No Touch Flush. “Once I had the idea, we moved into the development phase,” he recalled. “Originally, it was going to be fixed to the ground like a car pedal, but that presented cleaning difficulties. We kept thinking of ways to pull the handle, and the best way was to attach the S hook to the handle and the stirrup part. We bought a new toilet brush, removed the bristles and stretched out the handle to make our first prototype.” Brandon then began working on a second prototype and creating a plan. “There were parts where the process was tough-like creating a The innovative No Touch Flush, created by business plan part,” he Brandon Russell shared. “You really have to focus as you are writing that. After, it is a breeze.” It was then time for Brandon to compete at the Regional level with other students from the Greater Rochester Area. “I was hopeful, but I did not really think I was going to win,” he admitted modestly. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Brandon and his fellow competitors did not gather to pitch their ideas as originally planned. Instead, each student submitted a video pitch for their product. Brandon remembers the exact moment he received the news that he had won.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

“We were at the dining room table working on homework,” he said. “Miss Latoya from YEA! called and announced me as the Regional winner. My mom was right there with me. We looked at each other in awe, and as soon as we got off the phone, we were so excited, we began calling everyone!” Along with moving up to YEA!í’s national competition, Brandon was awarded $1,000 which he used to purchase a computer, enabling him to use CAD Design software to improve upon his Brandon Russell, YEA! product. His current prototype was created national competition using a 3D printer. “We are working on a contender better way of attaching the No Touch Flush to the handle. We are also working to get that sleek, bathroom look. I am focused on winning this national competition and finishing strong.” YEA!’s national competition will feature student semifinalists from 20 states. These students will compete virtually, representing schools from across the country for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, and a People’s Choice Award. For the first time ever, the national competition will be a live broadcast from Sinclair Broadcasting Rochester, NY ABC WHAM Channel 13 and will be live streamed on YEA!’s YouTube channel. Two student businesses from each region, for a total of eight student businesses, will advance to the Finals Round and pitch live in front of thousands of viewers to see who America’s next top young entrepreneur is. The Shark Tank style pitch competition will award over $80,000 in cash prizes and scholarships to the Saunders College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology to the students with the best business ideas and inventions in the U.S. Registered viewers from around the country will get the opportunity to vote via text for the People’s Choice Award. The 1st place winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship to RIT and a $5,000 cash prize. This year’s awards will be sponsored in part by the E. Philp Saunders Foundation, Southwest Airlines, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and the Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology. “We could not be more proud of the work these young people are doing,” said YEA! founder and CEO, Gayle Jagel. “Just imagine what our world would look like if every student got the chance to bring their ideas to life.” “I am very excited but also very nervous,” Brandon said. No matter the outcome, he adds that YEA! was “a really fun experience, all about learning and developing business.” Brandon plans to continue to market his product. “I will definitely focus on sales after the competition,” he explained. “I will also attend RIT, possibly as a business major.” Please join us live on Saturday, Oct. 17th at 3:00-4:30 Eastern to support Brandon Russell. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Who's Hoarding the Mini Blinds? It's a bit unnerving to walk through a store and see so many empty shelves. I haven't been to the local big box store very often lately, but I wanted to see if what I suspected was true. I'd been unable to order a number of items for curbside delivery and had been told that lots of things were actually in the store but couldn't be purchased except inside in person. That made no sense. I suspected that, instead, those items just weren't there. So, in I went, mask on face, miniature hand sanitizer bottle in purse. I was stunned to see so many empty shelves. It wasn't like the first month of the pandemic when people were hoarding and taking as much bread, sanitizers and canned goods as they could carry out, until limits were put on purchases. Instead, there were shelves empty of items you wouldn't normally associate with hoarding, like mini blinds. Who hoards mini blinds? I could (maybe) understand the lack of packs of lined school paper and pencils, for the kids doing remote learning, or toys because the kids are home all the time. I could see where we'd still be missing a variety of paper towels. And I could almost understand the few choices for shampoo and bath soap. But what about dishes and light bulbs? Unless one was in the market for square red dinner dishes or 40-watt bulbs, there were none to be had. Certain shortages we can understand. But what has happened to the supply line when we can't get a simple 100-watt bulb? With winter coming, we might do well to reconsider our supplies and add a few light bulbs to our stash. Otherwise we might be in the dark even more than we already are.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities, and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer follow-up are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a news report that vasectomy increases risk of prostate cancer. Should men avoid this procedure due to concern for prostate cancer? -- T.S.V. ANSWER: Several studies have looked at this possibility, and the results are conflicting. A 2014 study of about 50,000 U.S. men showed an increase of about 15% in the risk of fatal prostate cancer, but a 2016 study of 360,000 U.S. men showed no increase in risk. In June 2019, a study of over 2 million Danish men showed a 15% increase in overall prostate cancer risk. To put the risk in perspective, about 500 men would need to have a vasectomy for one additional man to get prostate cancer, in the Danish study. It is not clear that the vasectomy caused the prostate cancer. It is possible that there is something about men who choose vasectomy that puts them at higher risk to begin with; however, the authors were unable to find a known risk factor to support that possibility. Even if vasectomy does lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer, it still has similar or lower overall risk than other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for a man who is absolutely sure he does not want to father any more children, as a vasectomy should be considered permanent. Attempting reversal is possible, but there is no guarantee of success. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW?

Annual Enrollment Period

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Roughly 40 million adults in the United States, or 18 percent of the country’s population, has an anxiety disorder. Developing from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events, anxiety disorders are highly treatable. Unfortunately, the ADAA notes that less than 40 percent of those suffering from anxiety disorders receive treatment. Treatment of anxiety disorders can be highly effective and can even help people deal with other disorders, as the ADAA says nearly onehalf of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. People living with anxiety disorders who seek treatment may find they also are suffering from depression, compelling them to receive treatment for that disorder as well and further improving their quality of life.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County There are sections in my lawn that look dark gray or black. When you get closer is appears to be tiny little spots of something like a fungus growing on the blades or grass. They are all over my lawn. Can you tell me what they might be and how I can get rid of them? Are thy dangerous to my small dog? - Kimberly L. This summer, our lawns have been highly stressed, and I have observed many

lawn problems as I drive around our area. Stressed lawns are generally those that invite the growth of fungus. Stresses include high heat and humidity, wet conditions, mowing too low and/or too frequently, overly thick layer of thatch (layer of organic matter between soil and grass blades). There are a multitude of fungi that are common in cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues, and Perennial Ryegrass). In some cases, a fungicide may be called for, but generally it is most useful as a preventative. Usually, when the weather becomes more favorable for the lawn and

less favorable for disease, the grass will recover without a fungicide. From the photos sent along with this question, it appears to me that the fungus in this case is a slime mold. Although it looks ugly when it forms white, gray, or purplish spore masses on grass blades, it is not a parasite but feeds on microorganisms in the soil and thatch, and is simply using the blades for support. It doesnít kill the grass and will go away without treatment when conditions change. Perhaps you can just mow the affected areas to get rid of it. Even

if I am incorrectly diagnosing this fungus, it is still likely that it will clear up when conditions improve. If it is another type that kills some patches of grass, you may need to do some reseeding this fall. I find no evidence that lawn fungus is harmful to pets.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county CCE office to extend information throughout their communities.

“Abstinence is as easy for me as temperance would be difficult…” ~ Samuel Johnson There is a great deal of wisdom in Dr. Johnson’s epigram. For those who might not be familiar with any words he used, Dr. Johnson is remembered chiefly as a lexicographer, and developed one of the first authoritative dictionaries. Johnson tells us that if we want to eliminate a bad habit, it is easier to abstain entirely than try to practice moderation. Once we have conditioned ourselves to make the effort, we’ll find it as easy to abstain as to “cut down”…a practice which only serves to keep our bad habit alive. We serve families of all faiths and creeds with dignity and good taste. We are locally owned and operated and take a sincere interest in all who come to us for our professional aid.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

PHYSICAL LABOR A big thank you to all landscapers! You so deserve more credit! We appreciate your work while we do believe you deserve better wages! Some would sit on unemployment! Thanks!

THANK YOU TOPS IN HAMLIN! I want to express my appreciation to Aaron at Tops in Hamlin for being so diligent when it comes to cleaning the shopping carts

during this pandemic. Over the months, I know there are others who also participate in making sure that the carts are sanitized, so I want to thank them as well. It may be a task that seems to be never ending and one that goes unnoticed, and that is why I wanted to express my appreciation for a job well done. I have been to another grocery store chain, and I have never seen anyone clean or sanitize the shopping carts. So, hats off to Aaron and the others who day in and day out clean the grocery carts for our protection.

DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason - people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!

ENOUGH MUSIC Enough is enough is enough (lyrics in a song) …about music. With so many horrendous things happening in the world, music is the least of one’s worries. If you live in an apartment, then go to management and complain, if you cannot go to the neighbor. Life was simpler when you could engage in conversation with a neighbor and let them know if something bothered you. You could share life stories and talk about the kids and grandkids.... your aching knees, and broken backs. Neighbors were really neighbor’s, not just in name only. They smiled and waved and took an interest in other’s in the neighborhood. They responded when you were in need and crisis. They were there

at your children’s weddings and d were joyous at the arrival of your ur grandchildren.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I know it’s a running joke that cats rule people and not the other way around. But if cats can’t stand people, why did they become domesticated in the first place? How did that happen? -Trisha G., San Bernadino, California DEAR TRISHA: While cats seem aloof and rarely fawn over people in the same way that dogs do, they do love their humans. They express their devotion in ways that are weird to us -- like quietly placing a dead mouse in front of us and sitting expectantly until their triumph is acknowledged. Or, like bumping their forehead against our hand, or even our nose. Or meowing incessantly when we’re in the bathroom, worried that we will never come out. When cats were domesticated -scientists think that happened about 12,000 years ago -- they approached humans for much the same reasons that dogs did. There was food available. Cats, like dogs, earned their keep: dogs by keeping watch over their humans, and cats by protecting their food. When humans developed agriculture and began storing grain, rodents became the bane of their existence. Cats, on the other hand, saw a smorgasbord of tasty rats on the menu. Over time, they became domesticated, and our symbiotic existence was cemented. Cats were revered by ancient societies, and yes, jokes about cats ruling the household are probably as old as the early Egyptian pharaohs. Their behavior -- as territorial hunters who move quietly and strike quickly -probably did not need to change as dramatically as wild dogs’ behavior had to evolve. Yet, they did become tame and companionable as well -- although much more aloof. Archaeologists and sociologists have studied the domestication of cats quite a bit, because it helps to answer many questions about ancient peoples. In a way, it helps to outline why cats today behave the way they do.

JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Chemist: Chemists conduct analyses and experiments in laboratories that require qualitative and quantitative computation.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE (NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.” 3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save. 6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
