I am Trip, a Setter Mix. I was adopted from Blue Moon Meadows in Avon. I must keep lookout to the street. I am well known in my kingdom neighborhood and love to be friends with everyone. My owner says my newest friend is my best friend. I live happily with my two sisters who were also adopted from BMM! I love the outdoors – even laying in the snow while the family is in the warm house.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second. LIVONIA: Sunset Drive (multiple households). Friday Oct. 9 to Sunday Oct. 11 (8-4pm). When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip.

81 Lake Street, LeRoy • bubbaslandscape.net TOP ROOFING TRENDS (NAPSI)—While replacing your roof can be expensive, it may pay to know more about increasingly popular stone-coated metal. There are five good reasons: 1. Durability: Combining the strength of steel with the design versatility of crushed stone, stone-coated metal roofing offers a better-looking way to protect your investment. Thanks to its engineering, stone-coated metal stands up to harsh conditions, including fire, wind, hail, hurricanes, seismic activity, and extreme cold and heat. 2. Curb Appeal: Stone-coated metal comes in a collection of eye-catching contours and colors. Panels can resemble Mediterranean tile, hand-split wood shake, heavyweight shingle or even old-world Italian tile. 3. Long-Term Value: Stone-coated metal offers greater longevity— three—plus times more—and lower maintenance needs than most other roofing products. “In an average lifetime, a homeowner will need to replace an asphalt roof at least three times as often for the same cost of one stonecoated metal roof,” explained Mark Gallant, Vice President of New Product Development at DECRA Metal Roofing, the original stone-coated steel roofing system, with over 60 years of research and practical experience. 4. Keep It Cool: Metal roofing can help cool your home through air space between the panels and the roof deck, reducing heat transfer. Some roofing colors can also reflect unwanted solar heat. 5. Save Money: A stone-coated metal roof could net you a discount on your homeowners insurance. Check with your insurance agent. Overall, a stone-coated metal roof can help your home look better, feel more comfortable while you live in it and be easier to sell when you want to.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

Peter, having arrived at the house of Cornelius, announced to all present, “the things which God had commanded him to speak,” Having stated the great discovery made to him by the spirit, how that “God was no respecter of persons; but that in every nation he that fears Him (not, however with that fear ‘which is taught by the precepts of men’), and works righteousness (such as God requires) is accepted of Him:” – he directed their attention to “that WORD which God sent unto the children of Israel by Jesus Christ,” preaching peace. He told them that they were acquainted with that word; for it was published throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after John’s proclamation. As they knew it, he did not occupy time in repeating it in detail. The reader knows what the word was that God sent to Israel by Jesus Christ, for we have already spoken of it; but, lest it should have escaped him, we will reiterate it. “I was sent,” says Jesus, “to preach the kingdom of God,” This was his message to Israel. Hence, he styles it in the parable of the sower, “the word of the kingdom.” Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!” (Matthew 12:46-49) “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39) “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Now More Than Ever, Get Your Flu Shot A sincere wish just came true: This year's high-dose senior version of the flu shot will contain all four vaccines. In past years, the senior shot (for those over age 65) contained only three of the vaccines, two A and one B. Most years I would write a snarly note to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ask about the reason for the false economy. Of course I never got a reply, but now ... finally, we seniors will have a flu shot with all four vaccines. And what a shot it will be. The four vaccines are names we haven't heard in a while, if ever: A/Guangdong-Maonan (H1N1), A/ Hong Kong (H3N2), B/Washington and B/Phuket. To help us kick start our immune system, the senior version will contain four times the amount that younger folks get. The standard trivalent (threeway) will have two A and one B, while the standard quadrivalent (four-way) has all four. If your doctor says you should have a flu shot, don't delay. When I called my pharmacy (where I get my flu shots each year), the first appointment was many days out, and they had been swamped with requests for the shot. Yes, they will be resupplied when they run out, but no, they didn't know how quickly that would be. By getting a flu shot, should you get sick later this season, it will be a good bet that it's not the regular flu, which will save much time in getting a diagnosis. To find flu shots, call your doctor, local pharmacies, grocery stores or go to vaccinefinder.org. If you have a Medicare or insurance card, you won't have to pay anything. If you want to know more, check the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/ flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk for osteoporosis.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Long-Distance Move With Cats in Pickup DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three rescue cats. They’re the only family I’ve got. I’m planning to relocate to a rural area that is several days’ drive away. I’ll be driving a pickup truck. I feel that making my cats travel with me wouldn’t be humane. Is there an agency available that could humanely and safely transport my cats? -Karl in Avon, New York DEAR KARL: I can totally relate! Years ago, I moved across the country with a very nervous cat in a carrier next to me on the bench seat of my pickup truck. Even though I made sure he had water, food and anxiety meds prescribed by the veterinarian, it was a stressful trip for him, and he did not eat or even poop for the whole two-day trip. Once I reached our new home, he returned to his usual snuggly self. Traveling with all three cats is possible with planning and may be the least stressful option for them. If you have an extended-cab pickup, make room in the back seat for three cat carriers. Put a litter pan on the floor and cover with plastic wrap while traveling; at rest stops, open one carrier at a time and let one cat out to use the litter pan and to snuggle with you (don’t open the vehicle doors while you do this). Look for pet-friendly hotels that will let you keep the cats in the room. Airline cargo transport can quickly transport pets across long distances. But there is a risk of death for pets traveling in airline cargo. Another option is private pet transport. If you choose this service, make sure they are insured and bonded, and that they will stay in contact with you throughout the trip.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diabetes Not Limited to Only 2 Main Types --DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, at 57, I was diagnosed with Type 1 LADA diabetes. Initially I was put on insulin to get my blood sugar within the normal range. Then I was just on metformin until the “honeymoon period” was over. My endocrinologist is great. I now am back on insulin (six units at night). I walk anywhere between 3 and 8 miles about three times a day. My blood pressure is excellent. I initially lost about 18 pounds after diagnosis, so my weight is good. When looking at Google, it says my life expectancy has been cut by 20 years! Yikes, I JUST retired and if I go by their gauge, I’ll be passing around age 68! Is this based on someone who has had diabetes for many years, since Type 1 is usually diagnosed much earlier? The doctor said even though my initial sugars were over 500 when diagnosed, I was very healthy and that’s why nothing was “destroyed.” My vision was off for about a month but no permanent damage was done. Any reassurance would be appreciated! -- M.W. ANSWER: Most people are familiar with Type 1 diabetes, with a typical onset in childhood and at a normal weight. It is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. People also know about Type 2 diabetes, usually adultonset and usually diagnosed in someone who’s overweight; it’s caused by resistance to insulin. But there are other subtypes of diabetes, including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the U.S. and Canada, it accounts for a small fraction of diabetes cases, but is more common in Scandinavian countries. It has some characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but the autoimmune nature and the usual progression to insulin need makes most experts feel it is closer to Type 1 than to Type 2. A recent paper has outlined a potential new classification of diabetes types. The change in life expectancy from diabetes relates to how long you have had diabetes and how well-controlled it has been. With outstanding diabetes control (normal or near-normal blood sugar levels), the effect on overall mortality is modest, at best. In one model, the reduction in life expectancy is less than a year. However, it certainly is possible to have life expectancy drop by 20 years with very poorly controlled, longstanding diabetes. For people with diabetes, to a very large extent, their potential to live longer (and healthier) can be improved by better blood sugar control. For new-onset autoimmune diabetes (both Type 1 and LADA), early and aggressive blood sugar control with insulin may reduce the amount of autoimmune damage and improve long-term prognosis. Studies are in progress to evaluate this. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

Huge Estate Sale at the Avon Trading Post! BIG DISCOUNTS!

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

How do I get rid of bishop’s weed? It invaded a bed of lily of the valley and I donít want to kill that as well. - Kathleen C. Bishop’s weed has an incredibly dense root system which is quite difficult to eradicate. You would need to remove the lily of the valley plants, then smother the entire bed for at least six growing months; a year would be more effective. The ground is frozen during December,

January, February, and March, so plants are dormant, not growing. Before replanting your lily of the valley, completely remove all current soil from the roots by soaking and using a forceful hose. Cover the area with landscape fabric or 6 layers of newspaper with overlapping edges, then top with several inches of mulch. Secure the edges with stones or branches. The newspapers will gradually disintegrate, but you would need to pull out the landscape fabric. If you don’t remove the fabric, it will

gradually break down in to smaller pieces, become mixed into the soil, and impede root growth. Watch the edges of this area during growing months, and spray any bishop’s weed plants that emerge with herbicide.

WORK AT HOME IN COMFORT AND SAFETY (NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.

Apples in the stand this week: Gala, McIntosh, Cortland, Snapdragon & HONEYCRISP U-Pick: Empire, Cortland, Macoun, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious

“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. (NAPSI)—The next time you find yourself kicking your leg out of the side of your blankets to cool off or turning your pillow over because it’s too hot— you won’t be alone. Some 50 million Americans are affected by intermittent sleep problems, potentially created by bedding choices, according to the National Sleep Foundation—but you don’t have to be. Not many people realize it, but surrounding yourself with breathable fabrics while you sleep is essential for a restful night. Airflow matters because it lets heat naturally dissipate away from your body and helps keep your temperature regulated. Overheating can lead to a night of tossing and turning, leaving you groggy the next day because you didn’t recover properly the night before. What To Do So what’s the solution? It’s possible to get more out of each day by enhancing your sleep environment. There are options that can cater to your individual sleep position, body frame and temperature to help you maximize recovery at night. Consider these facts and tips for a better night’s sleep: 1. There are 24 vertebrae in your back, eight of which are supported by a pillow and the rest by your mattress. Therefore, while you’re sleeping, 30 percent of your comfort comes from your pillow and 70 percent comes from your mattress. This is why it’s important to have the right fit of sleep equipment that supports your body’s needs. 2. Get personalized. It’s true that one size doesn’t fit all—especially when it comes to your bedding. You might want to check out Bedgear, which offers a personalized Performance Sleep System and a Pillow ID fitting process, used by professional sports teams such as the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. The process is designed to fit people with individualized products for the best sleep every night. 3. Spend the last hour before bed away from electronics. Taking some time to relax and unwind calms your body and helps your brain transition more easily into deep sleep. At the same time, you’re removing artificial sources of the blue light found in electronic devices that activates your brain to stay awake and can disrupt sleep. Personalization, coupled with fabric technologies that are engineered to promote airflow and assist with temperature regulation, can ensure that your sleep environment is optimized for the best rest. Joseph B. Eberwein “Joe” September 24, 2020

“Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Phone for information or for an appointment, at our office or in your home if you prefer. No obligation.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2020 SUMMER GAZEBO CONCERT SERIES! The Riga Recreation Department just concluded its very successful 2020 Summer Gazebo Concert Series at the Village of Churchville Gazebo. In the tine of this health crisis, we were able to provide the community with some muchneeded relief. Many, many thanks to the following organizations that made all of this possible in these times of uncertainty: NYS Senator Michael Ranzenhofer’s Office, the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Churchville Lion’s Club and the following musical performers: Curbside Pickup, Blue Sky, Johnny Bauer, 8 Days a Week,

and Generations. -DaveThomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor ABOVE AND BEYOND! I want to give a huge thank you to all delivery people for making sure my parcels and mail arrive. A special thank you goes to our local FedEx. I order from Chewy frequently, and some of the items are excessively heavy. I have a pet that has allergies, and I am finding it difficult right now finding unscented products along with special animal food in our local stores. FedEx has no idea why I order what I do, but I wanted to let them know that they do an excellent job, and I am very pleased with their work ethic. THANK YOU I would like to

thank all of the wonderful friends that have helped us through the passing of our son JP. Thank you to all who came to the wake as JP would have loved this. Also, thank you to all who have stopped by to give condolences, brought food, flowers and cards, and donations to GG’s future education and for checking on us. Thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for their help. We can’t get by without you. Thank you to Pastor Colin Pritchard for staying with Jessica the night JP passed away and for the wonderful words at the wake. We are so thankful for you coming. We feel blessed to know that JP was loved by so many. We miss you JP. Love ya all, Margo,

MUSIC A HUGE PROBLEM? Wow! You use such strong adjectives to describe people who post their views, words such as “attacked” and “ganging up” on the person who has a complaint about neighbor and their music. I read the post as did many others, I’m sure, and there was no such thing. You may not like or agree with the suggestions given, but that does not add up to ganging up on or attacking someone. It was just practical advice. It’s clear to see how someone’s playing music can become so distorted. I think the complaining neighbor has more problems than just the neighbor’s music playing. They seem to have such distaste for them it’s a shame. How sad. With all the woes in the world, it’s a pity to make such a big thing over music. How long has this been going on that, all of a

sudden, it is a huge problem? MUSIC TROUBLE So sorry about neighbor being bothered by loud music. How long have you been suffering? Are you the only neighbor having a problem with loud music so loud that it rattles your house? Maybe you should try to nicely explain to your neighbor how bothersome the music is to you? Have you given that a thought? Maybe do it over a cup of coffee? That always brings the tension down, just a few suggestions. Also, ear plugs can help somewhat. There are codes where you can’t play music late at night or too early in the morning. Don’t know if that is when the music is being played. It’s always good to get along with neighbors. Hopefully, you can get some much-needed relief. Kindness does go a long way. I have been blessed with

neighbors who are kind and considerate. RESPECT OTHERS WITH MUSIC The nature of character is not based on self-entitlement but of respect for other’s right to peace and quiet. This must be a consideration, especially when residing in close communities or apartment complexes. We should not have to suffer through someone else’s loud music or faulty exhaust systems, etc. Also, taste in music is variable. One person’s treasure is another person’s torment. Peace and quiet is not trivial. It is of precious value. Remember the quiet individual doesn’t annoy the loud one; it’s vice versa. So, who should move? MUSIC & GETTING ALONG If you live in an apartment complex and a neighbor is blaring their music, then you

Bobby, Jessica, Anthony Emme and GG MY HEARTFELT THANKS I want to publicly thank the concerned motorist in the gray pickup truck who encountered me on North Main Street in the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st. He had purchased for me a reflective vest to wear as I exercise on the street’s shoulder. I was not aware that I was difficult to see since I wear a light-colored jacket and thought it was visible when headlights struck it. Thank you for your kindness and your personal concern for my safety. I was surprised and do feel safer wearing it!

should speak to management about it. It’s a different story if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of space in between homes and properties. Everyone has the right to enjoy their life, but unfortunately, we will not find a place where there is total peace and quiet. The bigger picture is getting along with one another, especially your neighbors. I know of someone who has a neighbor who does nothing but curse, I would take music, any day, over that.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-in-thedark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * “Peppermint is a wonderful cure for indigestion. To make a quick peppermint tea, use a rolling pin to smash three to four peppermint candies. Add them to a glass of water and microwave for a minute and a half. Stir to melt the candies completely, and drink slowly.” -- G.L. in California * Don’t stop reading just because it’s hard to get to a library! Many public libraries are offering delivery services these days. My local library will let you reserve books online for quick pickup, renew your due date or even have books delivered to your home. Some have regular seminars on all kinds of topics -- and many of them are done virtually. * If you are replacing a hinge to rehang a door and you need to use the same holes, make sure you add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the frame. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be as loose. * Maintain a list of all drugs you take -both prescription and over the counter -- and when you fill a new prescription, give a copy to your pharmacist to check for interactions. Also, if you have multiple or complicated medical issues, it might help to patronize a single pharmacy. That way, the pharmacist can advise you of any interactions or complications. * “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegar-soaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. EMPLOYMENT
