Halloween Candy Is No Treat for Pets
Auctions & Antiques ____________________35
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, my kids dumped out their trick-ortreat candy on the kitchen table to sort through. Halfway through it, they got distracted and left. I wasn’t paying attention either, but our two Golden retrievers, “Nala” and “Jetty,” certainly were. They both got onto the table and ate much of the candy -- of which most contained chocolate. For pet owners who don’t know, chocolate can be deadly to dogs. Never mind the candy wrappers that they had ingested! That led to a panicked rush to the emergency vet and an overnight stay for both our dogs. Fortunately, their size and overall good health helped keep them from suffering any serious complications. However, I still shudder when I think about might have happened. What if we lived in an area where a 24-hour emergency vet wasn’t available? What if we hadn’t noticed the wrappers and smeared chocolate on the floor under the table until the next morning? Please warn your readers to be vigilant about how they store their Halloween candy -- both what they give out and what their children bring home. -- Farah A., Lansing, Michigan

I need a home
DEAR FARAH: You warned them, and I thank you. Halloween marks the beginning of an extended holiday season where rich food, chocolate, alcohol and other party foods are in abundance. And dogs love to be in on the feast. Pet owners need to be especially watchful to keep their pets from ingesting chocolates, candies and other foods that can harm them (like onions and avocados, among other things). Avoid leaving food out on the counter or table, and place pets in their own room to chill out during parties to protect their health and your peace of mind.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

MEDICAL BED BLESSING I love my neighbors near and far! I placed a “need medical bed” in the “Give & Take,” and my phone rang off the hook (as we use to say). So many people opened their hearts to offer a bed for a needy person. When they heard that Mary Ellen had donated her bed, everyone said “Praise God for his Blessings on one in need”. Things may be tough right now but, in my experience, love and support never go away. May God Bless you all! PAYING IT FORWARD! A gentleman, on Sunday, October 4th, on East Henrietta Road; bought a lunch for my friend and me. I had held a door for a stranger to enter, and we parted
as friends. Thank you, “Sir”, for your kindness, and we will pay-itforward! THANKS TO TOPS! Once again, Tops at Hamlin comes through for its customers. A shout out to ERICH who was kind enough to take an apple pie back to the bakery for me, after I decided to buy a frozen apple pie. He was polite and did so without any ah’s or a “Well, I’m busy at the moment” sort of attitude. He was at the other end of the store when I asked him if he could do me that favor. His kindness was greatly appreciated. It may seem like something small and insignificant, but it is really nice when someone extends themselves on behalf of another human being. Thanks!
MOLLY & I THANK YOU! Rarely in one’s lifetime does an individual encounter kindness of the magnitude I experienced when my precious 11-year-old lab suddenly became acutely ill. Bob and Debby Berry carried Molly out to my car and accompanied me to the emergency vet, remaining with us the entire time. Fortunately, Molly’s prognosis is good, and she has made a full recovery. We need more selfless heroes like Bob and Debbie. WALGREEN’S ROCKS! I went to Walgreen’s in Brockport and had a problem at check out. I went over the amount allowed on my insurance card. Jamie was so kind to offer to check the price of the vitamin C’s I had wanted to buy.
She thought they were on sale. When she came back, she had her arms full of various different brand C’s and tried to assist me to see which ones I could purchase without going over the amount available on my insurance card. How thoughtful! She went above and beyond what many others would do. Jamie really impressed us! Because of her diligence, I was able to obtain a different brand of vitamin C’s! Thank you for going the extra mile. As a customer, we really value your caring attitude that you displayed towards us. I left your store a satisfied and happy customer! KIDZ KORNER Thank you for the Kidz Korner page on Respect! Kids still need this today.
INCONSIDERATE SHOPPING BEHAVIOR If you’re one of the vest-wearing, jack-booted tribe of women currently wandering the aisles of grocery stores, texting and yakking on your cell phones, blocking aisles, oblivious to all the other people attempting to shop around you, you can expect people to call you out on your entitled, self-centered behavior. Just do us all a favor and shop online. No one wants to hear about your brow sculpting appointment. PLEASE PROOFREAD I was reading a local newspaper (not the GVPS), and the article on the first page was riddled with grammatical errors. Does anyone proofread what is being
published, or is it just a free for all? This certainly takes the professionalism out of journalism and “quite frankly” diminishes the entire purpose of the article. NO DAYCAMPING I have lived here for 20 years, and every year, I pull out my camper, to read, watch movies, etc. in my yard. I cannot go anywhere else due to my work schedule. The neighborhood is more like town than country now: lots of lawn mowers going this year, loud cars, power tools, etc. This is the first year this has happened. I will most likely sell camper next year. I realize noise can be made, but we cannot enjoy peaceful use of our yard. We can even hear noise inside of our house.
REPRESENTATIVES! re Where is our foreclosure relief? SHAME ON YOU! This is for the person or personss n who took our ‘Back the Blue’ sign nt supporting Law Enforcement n from our front yard. Shame on you! Our daughter is a memberr of law enforcement. We are very proud of her and have the right to support and display whatever we wish on our own property. You were trespassing, and we hope you never need to call the police for assistance since you apparently have no respect for them or the rights of others. SHAME ON HER! Good Riddance to the thrift store/consignment shop at
the bottom of the hill. Some of the employees stole the merchandise on consignment. I was never reimbursed for those items! When the owner decided to close the shop, I was never notified. I assume she stole/ sold my items. To date the owner has not returned any of my messages. Shame on her! Good Riddance!

Tools: It’s important to include tools in your automotive emergency kit. W hile a full toolbox might be unnecessary, bring along an adjustable w rench, a flat head and Phillips screw driver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a flashlight. Extra roadside flares and reflectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a flat tire. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or w ith your other tools so you can check tire pressure if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as it normally does.

HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE? (NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data: LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high. The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far. When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

PAINTING/PAPERING
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS
CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.
PEST CONTROL
The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE
GUTTER INSTALLATION
Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

Q &A with the
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

These plants are not that varieties and benefits from mulching common, but might be found at local to get it through the winter in our area.
A layer of mulch 2 to 3 inches thick should do the trick. It is best to let it die back on its own in the fall, then cut down in the early spring. It will tolerate almost any soil, but does require good drainage. It is quite drought tolerant, once established. Coreopsis in general are tough, easy-to-grow, sun loving perennials. Coreopsis, like other profuse flowering perennials, tends to decline after a few years, so if your coreopsis is several years old, this could be the problem. Foliage may become sparse and flowers fewer in number. You could try to rejuvenate it by cutting the entire plant off near ground level before bloom season in the spring, then fertilize and water well to encourage new growth. Shearing your Moonbeam
after its first flowering will encourage a new round of flowers. To keep plants vigorous, divide every 2-3 years. This can be done in the fall or the spring. Six hours of sun should be sufficient; however, you could try planting some of the divided pieces in different sunny locations. Gardening is often a matter of trial and error. Even the most experienced gardeners sometimes try more than one location to find where a plant is happiest. First follow what the experts advise about plant care, but if your plants arenít living up to expectations, experiment with location, more or less watering, various fertilizers and compost types, and different timing or approaches to pruning and dividing.
The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county CCE office to extend information throughout their communities.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

Excerpt from
Elpis Israel by John Thomas Everything was delivered in a concise and dignified manner, which carried the impress of truth upon its very front. But, he not only opened the mystery of the gospel of the kingdom to these Gentiles, but he “preached the gospel to them with the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven;” for, “while he yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them who heard the word.” When the six Jewish Christians, who accompanied Peter, saw this, they were astonished, because that on the Gentiles was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit, as on the apostles themselves on the day of Pentecost. They could make no mistake about this, for “they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.” Interested? Contact Baxter Sharp, 4306 Hammocks Dr., Geneseo, NY 14454

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The universe has a color -- but it’s not what you might think. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University took the average of light from over 200,000 galaxies and discovered that the universe is actually kind of beige. They dubbed the hue “cosmic latte.”

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles A Comfy Nest for Winter Since it looks like this horrible coronavirus isn't going away soon, we might as well take a few steps to make our lives more comfortable over the winter. Here are some ideas: • Investigate a new wireless router to speed up your Wi-Fi connection, especially if you have multiple devices that put a drag on your connection • Buy a warm fleece blanket, one-person size, for watching TV at night. These 50x70 throws are just the right length. • Consider getting a Kindle, with a free three-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited. You can grab up to 10 free books or magazines at a time. Once you've read one, delete it and get another one. After three months you can decide if you want to spend $9.99/month to keep the subscription going. • If you have someone who can deliver and assemble it, an outdoor propane grill can be a bit of summer fun in the middle of a cold winter. • Keep an eye on sales if you need an additional pot for the extra cooking you're doing. Some stores have curbside delivery, so if you pay online you don't have to go in the store. Get freezer bags to store individual portions you can pull out and heat up without cooking every day. • Splurge on one good, thick sweater or zip sweatshirt to wear in the house. • Reorganize your kitchen cabinets, pantry or linen closet shelves. • And don't forget to stock up on batteries!
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

y e n o h Sweet on Local BY AMANDA DUDEK
Honey is tasty, healthy, and best yet, all natural! Fresh honey flavors change with the environment since honeybees typically travel no further than 3 miles from their hive. Rochester’s Pat Bono, manager of Rochester Beekeepers and owner and sole beekeeper of award-winning Seaway Trail Honey, keeps her bees along the shores of Lake Ontario, harvesting honey from them each week. She shares her insights on our region’s honey flavors. “This has been a phenomenal honey year,” says Pat. “We are in a very good part of the state for honey production thanks to a limestone belt that runs across the state. This creates sweet soil here, which is not found in the Southern Tier and Adirondack Regions.”
PAT B O N O Manager of Rochester Beekeepers
To determine which types of flower nectars contributed to her honey, Pat sends it out for pollen analysis. “We are very fortunate to have a patchwork of land, woods, wetlands, open fields and meadows rather than huge areas of monoculture crops,” she says. “There are always wild areas, which is good because bees prefer wildflowers.”
Looking for an alternative to maple syrup? Try local honey on your pancakes! Top with butter, fruit or nuts and enjoy!
Honey is a product of both time and place. As different types of plants bloom throughout the year, honey flavors change. Pat’s observations may help you choose your next jar! SPRING: Most nectar tends to come from tree blossoms. Flavors: Sweet and mild with floral notes
SUMMER: Native clovers all over are a great nectar source. Flavors: One of the “tea honeys,” sweet and mild with floral notes
E A R LY S U M M E R : Much nectar comes from Linden and wild basswood blossoms. Flavors: Very sweet honey, mild
L AT E S U M M E R / FA L L : Native goldenrod blooms in abundance, offering much nectar to pollinators. Flavors: A much darker, robust, almost caramel taste
FOOD & DRINK H O N E Y PA I R I N G S : • Drizzle honey on roasted almonds or walnuts and bake in the oven. • A dollop of honey in a bowl of greek yogurt also is a tasty treat.

• Swirl sweet honey in your morning cup of coffee instead of sugar to sweeten it up. • Drizzle a little honey on an aged cheese such as sharp or blue. The sweet honey will mellow out the strong flavor.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION: Communication issues between remote workers can be an easy fix. Even businesses that are facing sudden and forced transitions to remote workerplaces can utilize instant messaging apps like Slack to facilitate immediate communication between employees. This can drive greater efficiency and promote the sense of community among staff that many companies are proud to have fostered.

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES
NOTICE:
(NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers.
The Avon Village Board invites the submission of a quote for:
(24) 6-7 Foot, Fresh Cut Fir Evergreen Trees All trees must be delivered to the Village of Avon on Monday, November 30, 2020.
Small Businesses, Big Benefits Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:

• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future
By order of the Avon Village Board of Trustees Heather Randall, Village Clerk
• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded. Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon). Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants. Employee Incentives Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work. Additional Findings • When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing. • 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.
Thank You
The Family of Russell Toland offers our heartfelt thank you to our family and friends for your support and sympathy during the loss of our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Special thanks goes to Rev. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Use a permanent marker to put your initials on your charging cord. They all look the same, especially if they are white. This way you will know if someone -- say, your sister -- takes your cord!” -- V.V. in Georgia * “I use Milk of Magnesia on a cotton ball applied to my toes to ward off itchy feet from athlete’s foot or whatever causes itching. I just apply it when I get out of the shower, and it dries before I put socks on. It really works!” -- E.L. in Kentucky * “An online grocery order mistake landed me with way too many bananas. In addition to banana muffins and breads, I sliced and froze a few bananas to use in smoothies, and mixed mashed bananas together with some other fruit pieces to make a sorbet of sorts.” -- Y.D. in Arizona * When painting, most people know to place a roller in a plastic bag to keep it moist between paint sessions. An added layer of protection is to then stick the roller (in the bag) inside a Pringles chip can. It’s the right size, and it can keep it safe until the next day. * “When my curly curly hair gets the frizz, I use a sheet of fabric softener to take the static electricity out of it. This works so well that in the winter, I keep several in my purse.” -- P.M. in Michigan * Childproofing in a pinch: Slip a thick sock over a doorknob, and secure with a rubber band. Little kids will have to work much harder to grip and turn the doorknob, and it can help keep kids from opening doors. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Lab Finds Tiny Amount of Blood in Her Urine --DEAR DR. ROACH: My question is about microscopic hematuria. I see a rheumatologist for sarcoidosis. Last year I had various lab tests, including a urinalysis. That test and several since then have shown microscopic hematuria. The rheumatologist sent me to a urologist, who did scans and a scope of the bladder up through the right kidney. There’s a slight stricture of the right ureter. My biopsies were negative. Tests and scans continue to be OK except for the microscopic hematuria. I am a 60-year-old woman. Is the hematuria a cause for concern? -- K.E. ANSWER: “Hematuria” means “blood in the urine.” “Gross” hematuria means there is so much blood that it changes the urine color, while “microscopic” hematuria is recognizable only in the laboratory. Blood in the urine can come from anywhere in the urinary system, and there is a long list of possibilities. Although the cause is sometimes never found, your physician should consider urinary tract infection, kidney or bladder stones, and, in the right age group, cancer of the kidney and bladder. CT scans and cystoscopy are commonly performed tests, and the negative result in your case is reassuring. You have one more reason to have hematuria than others, and that is the sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a condition that can affect any tissue in the body with abnormal clumps of cells called granulomata. (Just one is called a granuloma.) While the lungs are the most common site for sarcoidosis, it can affect the kidney, causing hematuria. Sarcoidosis also can cause kidney damage, resulting in a high creatinine, so that should be tested. Severe kidney disease from sarcoidosis may be treated with prednisone, but you should see an expert (nephrologist) to consider this diagnosis. The majority of people with small amounts of blood in the urine with no documented reason for it, including the cystoscopy and scans you had, will not have serious disease. However, it is probably still prudent to keep an eye on the kidneys and bladder periodically. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was just told that I have brittle veins. I have exhausted every place I can think of to find out more about this condition. What is it? What causes it? What should I do? -- T.M.G. ANSWER: There isn’t a condition called “brittle veins”: Whoever told you that was trying to explain a symptom you have. They may have meant that your capillaries (the smallest type of blood vessel) break easily. That’s a cause of easy bruising. They may have meant that you have stiff blood vessels, from calcium or cholesterol. That’s a cause of high blood pressure. They may have been trying to draw blood or put in an IV and found that your vein “blew,” meaning the needle went through the vein entirely and you had bleeding under the skin. There are also some rare blood disorders causing blood vessels to become fragile, and sometimes inflamed. These can be quite serious, but I doubt you have one of these. You would have been referred to a specialist. While I understand why medical professionals will use nonspecific terms like these, they can lead to confusion. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.

The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.

716-200-2396 RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Reconnect with your college or university. Another great way to build a professional network is to reconnect with your college or university. When meeting people affiliated with your alma mater, the ice has already been broken in a sense, as the school is essentially a built-in connection. You also won’t have to worry about the awkwardness that might come when meeting a professional contact with whom you have less in common. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help out their fellow alumni.

Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. College students are no longer just young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees. Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits.
